"ABOUT CFDM" COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with that format exclusively. A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong. By providing a unique means of communication, maybe old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our knowledge and experiences! The success of this effort depends on each one who becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/ her two cents in the form of articles, programs, opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the manual with your starter kit for details on how to submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =* |

Let's get ACTIVE! We need to start getting active! I know that I've
been very busy getting ready for the show. I have
added a lot of things to my website to help spread
the word. I've always asked if anyone had access to
the FIDONET echoes, to please help pass the word
along. People who only have FIDONET access, can at
least hear about what is happening out there.
I want everyone to know that Dr. Marty Goodman,
Lonnie Falk, Alan Battenger and others will more
than likely be at the show this year. I would like
to see it crowded, that way they will be at the BIG
BIRTHDAY BASH in 2000. I would like to see everyone
involved in the CoCo (past and present) to help
celebrate the 20th. Birthday of the CoCo! Not only
that, but I've got some really BIG cakes planned! =>

Steve Secord - PENN FEST Vendor! Pittsburgh is the place to be in August! California,
Florida, Hawaii and Texas are way to hot that time
of year. There's a great amusement park area, sev-
eral nice resturants, and...oh...um...THE PENN FEST!
The Fest is located near the airport. There are
plenty of motels to make thrifty reservations. Ron
works hard to make the Fest the best!
I have already paid for a booth where I'll be sell-
ing OS-9 goodies. One is an OS-9 related CD for use
with Windows and Mac OS! Look for the "The Complete
International OS-9 Underground Magazine". The book
and separate CD will encompass renderings of all
issues, including source code (C, BASIC09, and ASM).

I might take some shrink wrapped OS-9 games such as
Interbank Incident and Kings Quest III. If I can
fit it in my luggage, I will have a gently used pre-
owned OS-9 Level II manual for sale. If you need a
legal copy of the software, ask William Cousert at:

My Novel - now for sale Who Is Mister Charity?
That is the question on the minds of many people.
He started life as just plain Al. Born in a large
Western city, Al grew up in a broken home. As he got
older, life got harder. When Al found life was too
hard, he dropped out of high school and left home.
Then, he met Sonny. Sonny offered to help with what-
ever it took to get Al's life back in order.
But how Sonny achieved this was beyond belief. For
a larger power was guiding Sonny. That larger power
was the Lord Jesus Christ and Sonny was a truly
faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Sonny cared,
really cared about Al. Others helped Sonny teach Al
about God's love, God's grace and especially God's
charity. Al learned that even though he had a =>

rotten past, God still loved him. So, Al became a
truly faithful follower of Jesus Christ.
But what Sonny had been teaching Al to do had also
attracted the enemy of God, the Adversary. And what
Al was doing made the Adversary very, very angry. Al
was giving back to the people what the Adversary had
taken away - HOPE. That made the Adversary vow to
get even. However, that was the plan of the Lord.
Through the prodding of the Holy Spirit, Al was
taught to walk everywhere. And walk he did. A lot of
walking. The Holy Spirit also trained Al to overcome
any trial or trouble he got into. So, all troubles
the Adversary caused were really just trials and
tests for Al. Then, Al was ready to go out into the
secular world - with all of its people, cultures,
religions and beliefs. And Al brought something =>

to people that they never expected from a young man

Charity." That's who he is.

COCO CHRONICLES 15 PART 1 THE FOURTH YEAR (JUL'83-JUN'84) Continued...
Nelson Software, in September, announced that their
Super "Color" Writer had become the official word
processor of the DRAGON.
The highlight of the second RAINBOWFEST (held in Ft.
Worth on October 14-16) was a walking tour of
Tandy's new CoCo Plant. The same month Radio Shack
releases the WALT DISNEY and SESAME STREET educatio-
nal software, MULTI-PAK interface, the MOUSE, the
KRAFT joystick, and the OS-9 operating system.
DENNIS KITSZ says "I'm gonna teach you a lesson"

SOFTWARE, the BASIC UNRAVELLED books from Spectral
Associates, and Computerware's first BASIC COMPILER.
Nelson Software changed its name in November to VIP
SOFTWARE. (A rose by any other name?)
With Christmas only days way, TANO started including
8 FREE programs with its DRAGON/64. Things are not
looking good for this CoCo clone. =>

Reviews for the DRAGON/32 and DRAGON/64 appear in a
couple of publications along with the announcement
of TIME BANDIT from COMPUTER SHACK, MAGIGRAPH from

In January, a BARCODE READER called OSCAR is advert-
ised in several computer magazines for several mach-
ines, including the CoCo. This $178 ill-fated
project ended up being liquidated for $54.00.
WAYNE TECHNOLOGY marketed its CP/M for the CoCo, and

THE FIFTH YEAR (Jul'84-Jun'85)
The CoCo turns 4 years old in July, at the same time
Radio Shack's TRS-80 MICROCOMPUTING NEWS published
its last issue.
The RAINBOW celebrates its third anniversary with
yet another feature, a scratch 'n sniff adventure
game. The issue also contains a complete index of
articles and reviews which have appeared in the

CoCo Swap List - INTERNET A few months ago, I started a new section on my web page. It was a CoCo Swap List. It's been running for over 3 months now, and over $1,000 have been transacted. (I should've asked for commission!). The Swap List is found at: http://www.voicenet.com/-swyss (Don't forget, that the - is actually a tilde, or wavy hyphen). When you visit, click on the SwapList button. You will be taken to the main Swap Page. You can either choose to go to the entry form, read the current wanted list, read the current for sale list, or look at a few other lists that people have. The entry form allows you to submit either a forsale or wanted entry. You can also enter the items -> ____________________________________________________ you want or want to sell/giveaway. Categories include hardware, software, CPUs, Misc, and Systems. For example, if you have lots of extra software, you could post a sell ad. Once I've verified the entry, I add it to a master list which is emailed to the CoCo listserv and newsgroup every so often, or can be read on my web page. If you want something, come and visit, and read the sell list. Maybe you'll find it on the list. The email address of the seller is there, too! If you have something to sell, visit and read the wanted list. Maybe you can help someone out! Come and submit something, or just browse! -* |
Jeremy Spiller Interview View text file associated with this article In this issue of CFDM you will find an interview that I recently conducted with former CoCo Game Programmer Jeremy Spiller. Among his most famous works are Zenix and Crystal City. The complete interview can read by simply using SPILLER.BAS. Internet users may also read this interview at: Nickolas Marentes' Color Computer Workshop http://www.launch.net.au/-nickm/coco Note: replace the "-" with the tilde symbol above. More from the Hardware Store Now that you have a 3.5" drive up and running,
let's install 3 of them in a 2-drive case. First, go
to your local hobby store and purchase a square foot
of .080" sheet polystyrene. While you are out, visit
a window dealer and invest about $3 in a plexiglass
scoring knife. Using the scoring knife and a strait-
edge, cut two 3/4" by 12" strips from the square and
carefully form them into a U shapes using a heat gun
or hot hair dryer. The inside width of the U should
be the width of the drives. The bends should be made
sharp and the bottom flat. Mark and drill #33 holes
(approx 1/8") up both sides in line with the mount-
ing holes of the stacked drives. Locate and drill 2
#6 clearence holes on the bottom of each bracket for
mounting to the bottom of the case. Now, line up the
brackets so that drive faces are even with the =>
____________________________________________________
case front, then mark and drill the mounting holes
in the case. Cut the face plate to the same width
as the inside of the case with the other dimension
about 1 1/4" longer than the case height. Bend the
excess height 90 deg. to the face then locate and
drill two #6 clearence holes for mounting to the
bottom front. Now, CAREFULLY locate the dimensions
of the 3 stacked, mounted drives onto the faceplate
and, using the scoring knife on the back side, cut
out the drive face opening. Construct the cables as
described earlier, paint a little bit, and enjoy
your expanded system.
Listed below are 3 companies I deal with where
you might get your disks and drives plus other parts
below the price of Radio Shack: =>

The Hardware Store I received a letter from a CFDM friend asking
about "3.5in. hard drives". After replying with a
description and cost estimate for installing one I
began to think he may have been erroneously refer-
ring to 3.5" floppies. That might have caused me to
reply thusly. What place might a 3.5" floppy drive
have in a RSDOS system? First, if you can still man-
age to find a 5.25" drive, it will be more expensive
and more fragile than its little brother. Disks are
also easier and cheaper to obtain, and, are more
durable. I recently bought 70 Digital Corp OEM disks
for $1 at a hamfest. They will cost a MAX of 50/$10
at surplus electronics companies and the drives will
be $5 to $15 at the same places. Because they draw
less power you can install 3 drives in most double
floppy cases. And, finally, if you are running =>
____________________________________________________
ADOS, you can take advantage of their full 720k
capacity.
Who should invest in 3.5" drives and disks? If
you wish to expand your system to 2 (or 3) drives,
or if one of your old 5.25" drives is starting to
fail, then go for it! If you have a second system,
perhaps you should consider converting it to 3.5"
drives only. And, if you run OS-9 even a little,
they are a godsend. If you want to convert, remember
not to paint yourself into a corner. Always keep one
5.25" drive online for disk conversion and new soft-
ware. Also remember the little disks can be used
just like the larger ones, in fact I keep nearly all
my RSDOS software on disks formatted single-sided
with 35 tracks. Adding a 3.5" floppy to a system is
easy. Just lay it atop the drive case and tap off =>

the power supply in the case with a "Y" power cable
and mini-drive adapter available at Radio Shack and
elsewhere. You will note that the signal connector
is different (34 pin female header). These can also
be purched at RS, et.al. Buy the type that clamps on
to ribbon cable. With a little care you can assemble
it in 5 min. Line up the ribbon cable and mark it
where you wish to attach the conn. Slide the conn.
over this point, insuring that pin 1 lines up with
wire #1 (usually red). You can confirm this by look-
ing at the controller conn. Now press the conn. to-
gether hand tight. Line the jaws of pump pliers
with several layers of duct tape, then gently but
firmly press the conn. together at the ends and mid-
dle until it locks in place. Use an ohmmeter or con-
tinuity checker from it to another conn. to check.=*

LOOK OUT
Here are two of my favorite cartoon characters, SAM and SYLVESTER. There is no motion here, but SYLVESTER is yelling to SAM to GET OUT OF THE WAY-- if you have a SPEECH/SOUND PAK, you will be able to hear SYLVESTER. With my CM-8 monitor, the color is very sharp, and I hope all can view the graphic as well as I can. I like graphics and I hope to see more from BEN WALKER and the rest--you know who you are. Since I have never attempted to draw Mickey Mouse in CoCo Max III before, I thought I'd give it try! I'll probably never have the "artist ability" to actually draw anything more than cartoon characters, so I welcome any ideas anyone has for new pictures. If anyone has any suggestions or a special request for a particular character, let me know! I'll give anything a shot! I am sure that GOD does not like the way a lot of people keep breaking "The Ten Commandments. This TALKING DISK shows how the Seventh Commandment was broken --- SHAME. This story is not to say that women are "BADDER" than men, so I hope no one is offended! Harold J. Moenich MOEN1@WEBTV.NET (Select SURPRISE in NIBSHOW or RUN "SURPRISE.BAS" if you have a SPEECH/SOUND PAK connected. See side 2 of this disk for SURPRISE.NIB and SURPRISE.BAS.) =* |
TACO BELL
Every day on television I see a cute little dog, a Chihuahua, looking for a "TACO BELL" taco. I thought I should have some FUN of my own with this little dog from "MECHEKO". I have made him say a few words---but anyone with a "SPEECH/SOUND" PAK will hear a little more I have added at the end of his little SPEECH. An ARTIST and PROGRAMMER I am NOT, but I sure "TRY". I hope everyone will send in "SOMETHING", even if it is only a GRAPHIC, which I know will be a lot better than mine. Until I see you all in the "CFDM", HAVE A VERY, VERY GOOD 1999. YOSEMITE SAM
One of my favorite cartoon characters is Yosemite Sam. He seems to like SHOOTING HIS GUNS, which are almost as BIG as he is. Since I have not found a way to have ACTION in my SPEAKING programs, I made Sam up for CM3 and NIB ACTION. Anyone out there who knows how to have SPEECH and ACTION on the same program, please help me. I am also looking for someone to help me with "MAXSOUND". I would like to have a program on disk that was generated by the "MAXSOUND" process. Please Help Me. LONG DAY! A LONG DAY!...Part 2 Another Update My Humble Beginning UPDATE FROM RICK |
| Back to top |
A LONG DAY! Hi Friends, we certainly had a long day yesterday -- our Bus Trip to the Casino Magic and Boontown Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi -- 200 mile Bus ride with one stop. We were on board at 5:50am and left promptly at 6am -- we paid $3 each for the trip! We each re- ceived $5 in Quarters at Casino Magic along with a Buffet Ticket worth $8.00 and then another $5 in Nickels at the Boontown Casino! Sounds to good to be true!? When the day ended, I came up that we spent a total of $50. We had a cash drawing on the bus -- each put in a Dollar Bill with our name on it.-- => ____________________________________________________ a man won $24 (not all 44 people participated!) Then we played BINGO -- four times for $2 with a pot of $12.50 each time. We didn't win. When we arrived at Casino Magic at 9am we were hungry -- so we went to the MacDonald's in the lower floor of the casino and had a Sausage McMuffin and coffee -- only cost us $3.94. The $10 in Quarters that they gave us disappeared in rapid order to a one armed bandit (Slot Machine) -- didn't have a single win!! We purchased $10 in Nickels and played Nickel Slots for over an hour -- went from $10 down to 50 cents! Had a lot of FUN -- took turns feeding the Machine and Cranking the handle -- Mew got 207 back the first round -- I got 104 back the second round -- then Mew got 71 and 67 back the next => ____________________________________________________ two rounds -- I went to 31 and then 10!! We went to the Buffet Line at about 11:30am and waited for 30 minutes to get in and be seated -- had a nice window booth to watch the Pelicans flying and the Shrimp Boats in the GULF -- inside the Barrier Island. Back to the Slot machines with a fresh $6 in Nickels -- went down to 131 then 100, 87, and ended up with 63 -- $6 down to $3.15...then back to the Bus at 1:50pm and over to the Boontown Casino back on the Bay. Added $1 each to their $5 and got a new supply of Nickels..$12 worth. Got one hour of play out of them -- the machines weren't as kind here so we quit!! (See A LONG DAY!...Part 2.) =* |
A LONG DAY!...Part 2 Went to the bakery and purchased some Peanut
Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies and went out into
a small porch area to eat them along with some Decaf
Coffee -- only $4.99. They have very limited no
smoking areas and they are all polluted!! Very hard
on our eyes!! Gave out tips $3, $1, $5, and $3.
Don't know if that adds up to $50...but it is GONE!!
Didn't leave the casino till 6:00pm -- so we
weren't back to the Condo till 9:30pm!!! One rest
stop on the way back also...200 miles in 3 hours,
with a very low grade movie to watch on the way
back.
We did meet a nice couple from Columbus, Ohio,
while we were on the porch with our cookies! =>

He was retired from the Air Force and also from
the US Agriculture Dept. -- spent time in Greece and
many other interesting places -- so we had a good
time talking and plan to have them over to the Condo
someday before we go home. They are staying in some
R&R houses at the Bay of Destin.
Well, that's all I have to report on a great
outing, but a little too long and without a NAP
for us!
Enjoy each day...as we do...Muriel & Godfrey

Another Update Well, some things have changed since my last update. I have moved, gotten a new job and fried a disk drive. On the upside, I'm paying less rent and making slightly more money. On the downside, I fried a disk drive in my CoCo. Fortunately I had a spare :) I have a new email address for those of you who care about those things: lost@l-w.net. (I registered a domain name for myself.) Also, for those who care, my new postal address is: 1202, 505 - 4 Ave SW Calgary, AB T2P 0J8 Canada =* |
My Humble Beginning I've become a big fan of collecting the first
computers that I used when I started back in 1980.
The following information (on web page) is for
reference and also a way for me to keep a record of
my collection.
It was fall 1980, during the semester of my Senior
year at Benton High School, in Benton, Illinois
where my computer career started. From the beginning
of the year I was playing with a Apple II at school
during study hall, that no one was even turning on.
The computer just sat in the corner of the library
doing nothing. I started reading the manual and
learned to type in programs (BASIC) and save them
on the single sided floppy disk drive.
=>
____________________________________________________
By Christmas the teachers had also found interest
in the machine since I seemed to understand it,
and had moved into the teachers area of the library.
As Christmas got closer, I was told that I could no
longer use the Apple now that teachers understood it
and wanted to use it for other school duties. I
complained to my parents about really enjoying the
machine and wished for one of my own.
That Christmas they purchased a Model III 16k
cassette tape machine for $1,000 dollars along with
two programs, Haunted House and Raaka-tu (text based
adventures). I couldn't get enough time on the silly
thing. I bought books, typed in my own BASIC and
'CSAVE'd my programs on cassette tapes.
=>
____________________________________________________
I'm now 35 and have a wonderful career working as a
Computer Consultant/Engineer for large insurance
companies. I feel that I really owe large amounts
of my career to my parents (who purchased that first
computer), Radio Shack (who built the Model III),
and people like my wife, computer clubs, and friends
who supported my efforts to learn more about these
facinating machines.

UPDATE FROM RICK I hope this entry finds all the Friends in the best of health and spirit! Now that Jim has taken on the task of continuing CFDM, I sometimes feel like I'm not in touch with you as closely as in the past. I know Jim is enjoying the fruits of your friendship as I did for such a long time! Everything seems to be going well with the Cooper family here in Liberty. Kristin passed her driver's license test the last of December. Santa brought her a car for Christmas...now Santa is trying to pay for it! Kristin will be seventeen in May! When we started CFDM she was only eleven. Time does go so quickly! Kristin is a good student. Kasey is twelve now and a seventh grader at the => ____________________________________________________ Casey County Middle School. She rode with me to Douglas Elementary for seven years. Kayla and I miss her company on our eight mile trip to school this year. Kasey has a heart of gold, and/but she is a little immature for her age. That makes her that much dearer to me! Kasey was on the girl's middle school team this year, but she's not one of their better players. She is a good student. Kayla is ten and in the 5th grade at Douglas School. She is a good student too. I coached one of our girl's junior pro teams this year. Kayla is our biggest girl...but we were the smallest team in the league. Our seven girl team finished 5th in the eleven team league. We feel like next year will be our year to win the championship! => ____________________________________________________ Donna (LaDonna is her real name) is very busy as usual. Last year she began working at the Board of Education as a secretary/financial clerk. She is known as one of their best workers. Those that know me know that I tease about Donna quite a bit. None of the things I tell on her are true...so in case I've said things about her to you I'll relate this story. Back in 1971 I was about to go overseas. I had orders to go to Vietnam. A couple of nights before I left, my mother found me crying in my room. I was sad not because I was going to Vietnam, but mostly because I didn't have a special girl friend, and my future looked so uncertain. I'll never forget Mom's words that night, "God will provide you with the right girl at the right time." He did...and Donna is that very special one! =* |

** PC Connections ** For CoCoists using the Emulator or having both
a PC and a CoCo3, while surfing this month, I came
upon the 'YAHOO! CoCo Club' with 32 members -
including Stuart Wyss, Ron Bull, and the Sock Master
(I'm No 32). This looks like another great gathering
place for CoCoists! The CoCo Club was founded by
Michael Baker on August 27, 1998, who included a
photo with his Profile. Most members have posted
very little info about themselves in their Profiles.
I guess it will take a while before everyone can
trust what personal info they put on the Internet.
The URL for the CoCo Club is:
http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/cococlub
You may join by following the instructions on the
first line of the CoCo Clubs Home Page, which is =>

in frames. The first line says 'You are not logged
in' - Click here to log in'. They only ask for your
name and email address - you receive a 'Confirmation
message', which includes a URL that you must CUT and
PASTE to do your confirmation - and then create your
Personal Profile with as much or as little info that
you want to provide. You are now a member and will
have access to all of the LINKS provided in the left
frame: Home (Links and Current Messages), Messages
(as of 1/30 it had from 8/27/98 to 1/27/99), Photos
(none submitted to date), Chat (a Members Only Chat-
room), News (YAHOO news service - nothing to do with
the CoCo), Links (to many CoCo Web Sites - need to
study this a little more), Members (Visit their
Profiles), and Calendar (It is a daily calendar by
the hour - should be for the month or year to be =>

more useful!).
The Web Site looks like it has the potential to
be a good clearing house for the CoCoists to ask
questions about Software, Hardware. CoCoFests, and
other info about the CoCo - hopefully to take us
into the year 2000. Best Regards to ALL - Godfrey

Heading for Chicago Fest I recently posted a message on the "CoCo List"
which asked, "Who plans on attending the Chicago
Fest?". Here is the list of people who responded:
An "*" denotes a Vendor who will have a table/booth.
* Adventure Survivors (Lin & Nan Padgett)
James Jones
* Jim Davis (times 2, Jr. & Sr.)
Joe Semenik
* Lee Veal
* Pinnacle Internet (Jeff Gerhardt)
* Ron Bull
Roger Hallman
Steve McCoy
* StrongWare (John and Charlie Strong, Don Adams
along with Jerry Cook.) =*

Penn Fest 99 - Who's Going? Can't decide whether it will be worth going?
Wondering who else will be attending? What will be
there to see? On this page is a list of people who
are planning to attend the Festival as well as what
they will be offering at the show.
Lonnie Falk - Yes! Lonnie Falk, the creator/editor/
publisher of "The Rainbow" has informed us that he
is planning on attending! Lonnie created the largest
and greatest Tandy Color Computer Magazine ever. In
many ways, if it wasn't for "The Rainbow", the CoCo
would not have become as popular or have lasted as
long.
Dr. Marty Goodman - Another CoCo celebrity! Marty is
the "god" of CoCo hardware (and a lot more!). =>
____________________________________________________
Marty has helped so many CoCo users over the years,
that he deserves a medal for his efforts (Hey Ron,
sounds like a good idea?).
John Kowalski - The great "sockmaster" will be
there! John is the creator of some of the CoCo's
most spectacular "demos". John is a wizard when it
comes to pushing the CoCo to its limits. John has a
web page at http://www.axess.com/twilight/sock.
Jim Davis - Will have a table with many of the CoCo-
Pro and Sundog products as well as a lot of misc.
CoCo gear at bargain prices. Jim will be taking sub-
scriptions for CFDM. He will also be distributing my
software, including my new one currently under
development. =>
____________________________________________________
His web page is: http://members.xoom.com/gearboxed/
Allen Huffman - Allen once ran a CoCo business
called "Sub Etha Software". He is responsible for
all the excellent CoCo Fest reports and has publish-
ed a book for sale with all these reports and a few
extras. He will have these available at the show.
Allen will also be doing remote broadcasting of the
event over the internet, hopefully using a live
camera.
More names will be added to this growing list and
will be updated in the next issue of CFDM.

UPDATE KUDOS FOR ISSUE #64 THIS MONTH'S HOLY SCRIPTURE |
| Back to top |
CFDM UPDATE Greetings Friends,
I'm pleased to welcome you to our first issue of
1999! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday
season. I appreciate all the cards and letters that
were sent in and enjoyed hearing from a number of
CoCo Friends over the holidays.
I was a little behind schedule on this issue, but
thankfully it's completed! I think you will find
plenty to read; with lots of neat stuff to see and
fun things to do in this issue. Many of our faith-
ful contributors continue to send in material on a
regular basis and I certainly apprecite it! I was
also happy to receive submissions from CoCo Friends
we hadn't heard from in a while. I'm determined =>

to keep these issues full, but count on each one of
you to make it happen! We're well on our way to the
year 2000, lets keep things going!
The Eight Annual "Last" Chicago CoCo Fest will be on
May 1-2, 1999 and is the first scheduled event for
the New Year. I will of course be attending this
Fest and will once again be setting up a booth.
There hasn't been too much said about the Fest on
the "online" CoCo Community, but it's a go! It's al-
ways nice to see your fellow CoCo users and visit
with new and old friends alike. I hope many of you
will be able to attend this event. If your not able
to make the Chicago Fest in May, the next scheduled
event will be Ron Bull's Penn Fest in August. You
will find information on both of these events =>

elsewhere in this issue. A lot of effort goes into
planning and organizing these events. Please help
keep the CoCo Community alive by supporting the

THIS MONTH'S HOLY SCRIPTURE This month's scripture comes from Proverbs. This
book is filled with many articles of wisdom. Here's
ten verses that you can feast on!
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep
my commandments: For length of days, and long life,
and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy
and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck;
write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt
thou find favour and good understanding in the sight
of God and man.
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean
not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways
acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be
not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and =>

depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel,
and marrow to thy bones.
Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the
firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy
barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall
burst out with new wine.

A Note from Vic Dear Jim,
thought to start the New Year right, plan
first, to answer all my mail and then pack up this
Disk Drive and Computer to send to the "Radio Shack
Repair Center". I called them a while back to ask
if they might be able to repair the Disk Drive.
Their only answer was to send it back for a "check-
up". Once this machine is out of here, I won't write
much for a while.
I also received a card from Godfrey Moll, so I an-
swered him right away (card & note). There was a
card & note from Keiran Kenny too -- surprise, sur-
prise, after 48 years, he's back in Australia!
And so it goes. Thanks for your card. So many =>

JIM: Good to hear from you Vic! Well, I certainly
hope Radio Shack gave you some "good news" about
your Disk Drive. Sometimes the only other alterna-
tive is to find a replacement drive. This is often
a more "cost-effective" approach to getting a broken
one fixed (usually). You may consider checking out
local computer retailers in your area, particularly
ones who build/upgrade systems. These type of places
will sometimes have "used" drives in their back =>

CLONE
Here we go -- they say NO to cloning Humans, but what if they go ahead and do it anyway -- I think they will in time. My thought is "What will God think about it ?". If it becomes a Legal Issue will they have a person like Mister Starr investigate it? FORM 1040 for year 1998 This program was developed to aid you in the Self- Calculations for the FORM 1040 with Schedules A, B, and D for tax year 1998. I re-program this every year so that I don't make any math errors. You must add a PCLEAR3 before the program is loaded, to insure enough space. In case you receive an 'OM' ERROR, increase it to PCLEAR2. Simply RUN "FM104098.BAS" to use the program or RUN "READ ME.BAS" to view additional notes. (See side 2 of this disk for these files.) =* |
K-SCOPE BY SMALL GRAFX ETC. K-SCOPE, a "Small Grafx Etc." take-off on an old
Rainbow program, illustrates the eye's ability to
create patterns out of chaos. Aside from being an
interesting screen saver, the "effect" is reminis-
cent of a Toy Kaleidoscope.
After a PALETTE is selected at random (lines 160 to
180), an image is built on the CoCo's High-Resolu-
tion graphics screen (HSCREEN2-to max the PALETTE
size), that is, the kaleidoscope is "Shook" (subrou-
tine 10000). And then the kaleidoscope's "Tumbler"
begins to turn. (subroutine 20000 working through
looped "PALETTE Rolls").
Remember "Small Grafx Etc." for unusual and custom
software. Write us or contact us through our email=>

SAFARI Years ago I saw a story on tv about a village in
India where a wild beast was killing people almost
every day. This was a true story, and when the
hunters decided to go hunting, they took a movie
camera along. This is the way I saw and heard it on
television. I am recalling the events in SPEECH, so
I hope you have a SPEECH/SOUND PAK---if not, you can
see the words as the story unfolds. The sound of the
BEAST is not very good, but I think you'll get the
idea, at the very end of the program. As I keep
saying "I will try anything NEW".

WACKO WACKO is one of the programs found in my first software package, "ALL RICK'S SOFTWARE". It's still available from me if anyone is interested. It's with a happy heart that I offer WACKO to the Friends in this issue of CFDM! Here's the instructions: WACKO is a computer version of a popular card game. The game consists of sixty cards, numbered 1 to 60, and four racks, each with ten slots for the player's ten cards. The cards are shuffled and dealt ten to each player. The cards are placed in the slots in the order they are dealt; i.e. the first card dealt goes in the top slot, second card in the next => ____________________________________________________ slot down, etc. In this manner each player ends up with a rack of randomly placed cards that are not in sequence. The objective of the game is to replace the cards in your rack until you have ten cards in sequence with the lowest card in the bottom slot and the highest card in the top slot. You must do this before your opponents in order to win the game. Here's how to get an ordered rack. Each turn you may take the last discarded card, which is face up for you to see, or you may choose to take a new card from the deck, which you cannot see. If you choose the new card you must use it! Whichever card you choose is used to replace one of the cards in your rack. The replaced card becomes the discard which is the next player's first choice on his turn. => ____________________________________________________ The next player may also choose to take a new card from the deck. In this manner each player takes turns trying to get an ordered or sequenced rack before his opponents. To begin play RUN "WACKO.BAS". Answer the prompts for monitor type and "How many players?". Up to four players may play. If less than four players are chosen, the computer will play the remaining racks. Next choose which rack you wish to play... 1, 2, 3, or 4. After answering the questions the game screen is drawn. The four racks appear in the center of the display. Your rack will have 10 numbers in the 10 different slots. (See WACKO...Part 2) =* |
WACKO...Part 2 These are the slots you are to order. Any rack you
did not choose contains colored cards which have no
numbers. These colored cards represent the backs of
the computer's cards. The numbers are there but you
cannot see them until the end of the game. The color
of the card back is important. If the card back is
green, that card is not in sequence. If it's red,
that card is in sequence. This helps you to know
how close your opponents are to winning!
Now notice that a red box is located at the top of
one of the racks. This indicates whose turn it is.
Also, notice that each slot has a number 1-0 beside
it. Use the number keys 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0, to
tell the computer in which slot to put your new
card. =>
____________________________________________________
Below the racks are three boxes. The left box is
the deck of unused cards. The next box holds the
most recent discard. The third box is empty. It will
contain the number of the top card from the deck if
you choose to not use the discard. Below the boxes
are the only two instructions you need to place
cards on your turn. Press any number 1 thru 0 to
place the discard in the slot of your choice. If
you do not like the discard you may press N to
place the top card from the deck in the third box.
Then press the number of the slot you wish to place
this new card in. (You must use the new card if you
have pressed N.)
The computer will tally the scores after each =>
____________________________________________________
game. If you win the game you receive one game point
and 50 match points. (That's 5 points for each card
correctly ordered.) If you did not win your score
will be 0 game points and 5 points for each card in
sequence starting from slot 0.
If you play human opponents you should agree before
the match how the winner will be determined.
I hope you will enjoy this game. It is a lot of fun,
so take time to learn it!!
Your friend,
Rick Cooper

ZARK-A Zork-Wanna-be! I've always liked playing ZORK. (I guess I've
graduated to Zelda and Pokemon!) For lack of some-
thing else to write at the moment, I tried to write
a ZORK-like game for the CoCo. What's different is
that the main program, called ZARK, can load the
files that contain the adventures. In theory, once
you have the ZARK program, you can load any
adventure files from anyone. I am working on an
editor to create, save, and modify adventure files,
but it's not submittable yet.
Anyway, in this issue there are two files. One is
called ZARK.BAS. This is the main program that will
load the adventure, and allow you to play it. If I
write another adventure, you would still use ZARK to
play the new adventure. ->
____________________________________________________
The adventure is called EMERALD.ZAK. First, RUN the
ZARK program. It will ask you for the name of the
adventure. Type in EMERALD and press Enter. The
program will read the files into memory, then tell
you about your quest, and your top score.
Commands are simple. Directions include N,S,E, and
W. The program can handle 3D adventures allowing an
Up and Down. However, EMERALD is all one-level.
To get the key, type GET KEY. To look at the book,
type LOOK BOOK. To look around, type LOOK. Other
commands include INV, RESTART, HELP, SCORE, & QUIT.
You can also OPEN things to find other stuff!
Have fun! Keep reading page 3 for limitations and
other technical stuff.
->
____________________________________________________
What the program doesn't do yet: there are no
monsters to battle (YET!) And a problem with
EMERALD is that I accidentally defined several
objects called KEY. When you have all the KEYs, and
you try to LOOK KEY, the program may not figure out
which KEY you want to LOOK at. It won't crash or
anything, though.
HINTs: LOOK at everything
Check your SCORE every so often
Make a map on graph paper as you go
Try and OPEN things (Some objects contain
other objects you need to GET)
(You will find ZARK.BAS and EMERALD.ZAK on the back
side of this disk.) =*

- Demolition Derby WE NEED MORE REVIEWS! |
| Back to top |
Review - Demolition Derby I remember first seeing Demolition Derby in the 1986
Radio Shack Catalog, listed as "NEW" and selling for
$19.95. The game was available on a ROM PAK and re-
quired a 16k CoCo with one joystick. My CoCo setup
at the time was a 64k CoCo 2 and a color tv. The
game can still be played on a CoCo 3, but with a b/w
game screen. It is possible to change the screen
color to BUFF or GREEN by pressing the appropriate
keys, but doesn't add much to the "visuals".
The game features 3 modes of play:
SOLO - You against the computer.
DUEL - Play against the computer and a Human Driver.
TEAM - Two Human racers play against the computer.
Your Goal: Smash other competitors into the walls,=>
____________________________________________________
while trying to avoid Road Hazards and other racers.
Road Hazards include: Debris, Traffic Islands and
Ambulances.
Points are scored by successfully smashing opponents
into the walls. For every car you smash, you're
awarded a "notch". Achieve 15 notches and you will
advance to the next higher course. There are a total
of 16 courses, which all basically look and play the
same.
Your Opponents: Spikers, Smashers, Spoilers and Fuel
Trucks. Fuel Trucks have no point value, but are re-
quired for surviving!
=>
____________________________________________________
The game is enjoyable to play, but may seem a little
dull to some. The overall difficulty of the game
isn't very hard, so it can be played by all skill
levels. Your opponents never pursue or chase you so-
to-speak, so you never really feel any great driving
pressure. The cars move in a "zombie" path, so there
aren't too many surprises. The main obstacle seems
to be trying to avoid Road Hazards. Fuel is also
VERY important to your success, run out and you lose
a life! Every 10,000 points you are rewarded with
another life! The computer will give you a pretty
good challange, but you would be best suited for a
Human Racer as an opponent. While this game doesn't
look real facinating in 1999, I did have a lot of
fun with it back in the day!

WE NEED MORE REVIEWS! Please consider writing a REVIEW for this section.
A lot of products have been created for the CoCo.
Share your thoughts and opinions on a CoCo product
you've used in the past or present. Hardware, Soft-
ware, Books. Even Tips or suggestions on how to use
something. If it pertains to the CoCo, we want to
hear about it!

Bill Hewitt, Where are you? I try to answer all calls and letters, but this
one has me stumped. While we were away over the Xmas
season, our answering machine recorded a call about
my request in CFDM from "Bill Hewitt, 352-690-6032".
At least that is what it sounded like after several
playbacks. That number got me a family in Florida by
the name of "Hope????" and the CoCo Registry turned
up noone by that name. I even had my brother in Va
check it out with his multi-million dollar, belch-
fire, post-Microsoft finder software to no avail!
Hey, "Bill Hewitt", where are you?

COMPUTIZE DIGITIZER I'm looking for a "Computize Video Digitizer".
Do you, or someone you know have one of these beasts
hiding in your closet? It's a digitizer capable of
capturing 30 frames/sec. of live video. The problem
most people had with this product was no software to
really utilize its capabilities.
I wrote some software for it years ago. The problem
I had was trying to save video to disk. It used way
too much disk space to save simple animations. With
a gigabyte of storage space at my disposal, I'd like
to create some neat animations for the upcoming coco
fest. If you can help me out, please email! Thanks.

Dinner Preference We need to know your dinner preference:
Should we try to have another "CoCo Family Dinner"
at the Elgin Plaza Hotel this year, like we did last
year? This Dinner would cost each participant $20
this year.
The alternative would be doing what we did in past
years - each fending for themselves or forming
smaller groups to find less expensive dinner
accommodations.

Wanted: Old Radio Shack Photos I'm working on a project that could benefit from
having some old photos from 1980-85.
I would like to get a few different ones:
outside the store
entrance to the store
computer areas
computer displays
computer displays in main front windows.
I would prefer that the pictures not have any people
or at least very few that don't block the shot. I
would remove them from the pictures digitally. If
you have a scanner and can just email them, that
would be great. If you don't have a scanner =>

and want to just snail mail them to me, I will scan
them and return them.
Thanks so much,
Steve
