NEWS ABOUT FLIPPIES!! FIFTH ANNUAL "LAST" CHICAGO FEST NEW PRODUCTS..NEW HORIZONS! NEW SUBSCRIPTION NUMBERS PHONE FEST IV REPORT |
| Back to top |
BAD NEWS ABOUT FLIPPIES!! In mid February I decided it was time to purchase
some more flippies for use with RCE and for sales.
It seemed a little unusual that I kept getting a
busy signal when I called SYNCOM, my distributor.
But I had recently received a call from "Sandy", a
gal that once worked for SYNCOM, and she was now
working for another company and wanted my business.
I asked her to send me prices on their products and
especially on flippies. She sent the prices and
then called me for an order. I asked her to give me
just a little more time.
I quickly made one more call to SYNCOM..still a busy
signal. Then I called their other (non-800) number
and it had been disconnected. Then I called for
information and found they no longer had a =>
____________________________________________________
listing. I followed this up with a call to TECH
MART, another supplier, and was told that SYNCOM was
out of business. And...not even TECH MART could
locate flippies. So, I called Sandy and ordered
some of her flippies.
They arrived a few days later, but they were not
flippies. They did have the two timing holes, but
THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY NOTCHES...no not one!! I called
Sandy and reported that what I had received was not
what I had ordered. She made some calls and then
called to inform me that flippies were not available
from her company. I made arrangements to send them
back and I was quite depressed about my future of
delivering CFDM on flippies.
=>

But some rays of sunshine did appear the next day
after I related my story to my friend Mike Brown. It
just happens that Mike had a disk notcher that he
no longer needed. He brought it to me the next day
and I began my first experience at notching disks.
It's really not that hard! You can notch about 10
a minute!
Now what this means is that I am not able to furnish
anyone with flippies at this time. For this I am
very sorry...but I'll continue to search for a new
source. WE HAVE TO HAVE FLIPPIES!!
Marty Goodman has related to me a way to disable the
write protection on a disk drive. I may use this
method to avoid the "notching" business! =*

NEW PRODUCTS..NEW HORIZONS! With issue #50 of CFDM you recieved a sample copy of
a new product from RCE. (So you thought I'd really
slow down!!) THE COCO REPORT will be a small 6 to 8
page newsletter that will help fill in the gaps of
time between issues of CFDM and PCFDM. Hopefully
there will be very little overlap of material found
in the three (CFDM, PCFDM, and THE COCO REPORT).
This little newspaper will be/has been sent to quite
a number of other folks who have fallen by the
wayside over the years. They have been good friends
and hopefully will use the opportunity of THE COCO
REPORT to stay in touch with us. The price is small
($7 for 4 issues) and maybe that will help keep some
from dropping out altogether.
=>
____________________________________________________
And of course PCFDM, the New PC disk magazine that
focuses on the CoCo, will draw a few more. So then
we will have three groups of CoCoists which when
added together should make our group bigger than
before.
I must be honest and report that as of today we are
under 150 members. This is the lowest our numbers
have ever been...and although it's discouraging, it
is not fatal and it's not the end. We have too many
faithful friends to ever give up! Please help keep
our efforts going by renewing your subscription,
contributing your work and ideas, and helping others
with their needs. In that latter area you have been
more than wonderful!!
=*
|
NEW SUBSCRIPTION NUMBERS If you have extended your CFDM subscription thru
the first "quarterly year", that's thru issue #57,
then you might have noticed that the last characters
on your subscription number is now "Q1". That tells
me that you are paid up thru the first quarterly
year.
At this time we have 23 Friends with the new "Q1"
designation. That means at least 23 Friends have
already committed their support thru June 1997!! I'm
sure there'll be many more to follow whenever their
subscription comes due.
Here's how I have been attempting to reconcile each
subscriber with the new system. Whenever the last
issue on your current subscription is mailed =>
____________________________________________________
I put a renewal slip in your mailer. It tells you
how much to send if you want to renew to the end
of the monthly publishing issue; that's issue #53
(June 1996). The slip also tells how much to send
if you want to go ahead and subscribe thru the first
quarterly year. As you know, once we start quarterly
publication, we will cease selling CFDM by the
single issue. All subscriptions will then be for
issues #54 to 57 at the cost of $30. (Subscribers
will recieve the regular issue, a bonus disk, and a
copy of HARDCOPY.)
So that you can be informed in advance, here's a
little table of what you can pay to renew your
subscription.
=>
____________________________________________________
If the last number on your subscription is found in
the first column, pay the amount in column 2 to
receive the issues in column 3. Pay the amount in
column 4 to recieve the issues in both column 3 and
5.

PHONE FEST IV REPORT On March 2nd, we held a mini Phone Fest, mostly to
talk with the Friends and to see what they thought
about having a Rick's Picnic II.
Although only 7 Friends called in, a few said they
were making plans to come. These plus a few others
that have already said they wanted to come, is just
enough motivation to go ahead and say, "Yes we'll
try it again!" So make your plans to come to Rick's
Picnic II on July 13th here in Liberty, KY. The
cost is $20 per ticket and that price covers your
admission and a delicious catered Picnic Supper! I
am sorry for the raise in ticket prices, but the
supper costs me $10 per person and the rental of the
facility and insurance costs $190. So to break even
on just these two items, I need at least 20 =>

folks to attend. There will be other expenses of
course. But the event will be well worth it! We
had a fabulous time last year and I know we can do
so again.
Back to the Phone Fest...our callers were Larry
Bryant, Ken Trevino, Laura Boyce, Clarence Bowers,
Jim Bennett, J. R. Waggoner, and Norm Barson. It
was GREAT to hear from each one of you!
Jim Bennett, J. R. Waggoner, and Norm Barson said
they were making plans to come to Liberty for the
picnic. I will mention that R. C. Smith was the
first to make reservations! Looking forward to
seeing R. C. and Betty again this year. Godfrey
Moll and Muriel are planning to come and =>

possibly Art and Jean Hinman. Ron McCauley and
Gerry McCauley have said, "maybe!" Of course Donna,
Kristin, Kasey, Kayla, and my local helpers will be
here. So if you can possibly make it, come and meet
some of your CFDM Friends in Liberty this summer!

Ken Trevino and Clarence Bowers were the winning
bidders on the four auction packages. Ken got #1,
#2, and #3. Clarence got #4. Thanks to all who
called and all who bid on the packages!!

THIS HELPS ME LOCATE YOU IN MY DATABASE! A single issue of CFDM is $6. Or get 3 issues for only $16. A 6 issue subscription is only $30 (a savings of 6$). Back issues are available at the same rates. COCOs FOREVER!! =* |
LOOKING FOR MM1 I am trying to track down a used MM-1 too buy, so
I am sending this letter to you (and a few other
CoCoists who listed one or more of the following on
the CoCo Registry: OS9, 68Micros, OS9 Underground).
Even if you don't have an MM-1 to sell, maybe you
know of someone who does. This is shot in the dark,
but I thought I would try.
I am interested in having an OSK machine and the
MM-1 seems to be the most reasonable way to get
started, since I already have a CM-8 monitor which
I could use with it.
Any feedback about the MM-1 or other OSK machine
would be appreciated.

PCFDM AND THE COCO REPORT PCFDM is a quarterly PC disk magazine which contains 95% CoCo material. With input from Marty Goodman on Delphi, Jeff Vavasour in the Emulator section, L. E. Padgett's Adventure Survivors, and Glenside's CoCo Club newsletter (CoCo 123), we should have plenty of material about our favorite home computer and the members of the CoCo Community! PCFDM is a quarterly and the cost is $30 per year. THE COCO REPORT is a 6 to 8 page newsletter that will be published quarterly. The objective is to fill in the gaps between issues of CFDM and PCFDM with news from the CoCo Community. The cost of THE COCO REPORT is only $7 per year (4 issues). I hope many of you will subscribe and contribute to the content of this newest endeavor!! =* |

COCO CHRONICLES (THE FIRST YEAR) The First Year (July 1980 - June 1981)
On July 31st, 1980, two months after unveiling their
TRS-80 Videotex terminal, Tandy publicly displays
its three new computers for 1981: the TRS-80 Model
III, the TRS-80 Pocket Computer and the TRS-80 COLOR
COMPUTER.
In September, the Color Computers started appearing
in Radio Shack stores. They sell for $399 and come
with 4K RAM, 8K Microsoft Color Basic 1.0, a 53 key
calculator-type keyboard, built-in modulator to
connect to any television, RS-232 interface, a 1500
baud cassette interface, joystick connectors, and a
slot where Program Paks could be inserted.
=>
____________________________________________________
In BYTE magazine's October issue, an article spec-
ulated that, of the 3 new Radio Shack machines, the
TRS-80 Color Computer will probably create the most
interest in consumer markets.
STEVE ODNEAL and WAYNE DAY, in the market for
machines at this time, purchase Color Computers and
yes Virginia, some jumpered C-boards were sold.
Tandy, meanwhile, was rumored to have a quality
control hold on the Color Computer following several
reported failures after only a few hours of
operation.
In November, 68 MICRO JOURNAL published the first
data sheets for the new MC6883 (SAM) chip but, =>
____________________________________________________
there are few Color Computer owners out there to
read it.
Radio Shack, at the same time, releases the first
Color Computer software. The ROM-PAK cartridge soft-
ware includes such "heavy-weight" titles as Chess,
Checkers, Quasar Commander, Personal Finance, and a
Diagnostic program.
By the time December rolled around, there was a 16K
upgrade available from Radio Shack, a requirement
for the delayed Extended Color Basic ROM, which is
only a month away.
(See Part 2.) =*
|
COCO CHRONICLES (THE..PART 2) If the Color Computer you got as a Christmas gift
was your first ever computer, (like it was mine) you
were probably unaware that the "Getting Started with
COLOR BASIC" manual accompanying the early machines
contained only 13 of the scheduled 24 chapters.
Radio Shack explained, in the December issue of its
TRS-80 MICROCOMPUTER NEWS that, when the machines
were ready to ship, the manuals weren't but, rather
than keep the Color Computer from us, they sent what
was available. Always thinking of us.
It was probably more a case of not wanting to lose
out on Christmas sales that prompted the decision to
ship with incomplete documentation.
=>
____________________________________________________
With the only available information found between
the covers of the unfinished "Getting Started with
COLOR BASIC" manual, for the small and hearty band
of early Color Computer owners, the first year was
like being in the Dark Ages.
------------------------------
Out of the CLS(0)
The place to look for information was either from
your local Radio Shack store (probably the person
who sold you the computer) or from Tandy's customer
service.
Salespeople, unless they are also "computer people",
could offer little if any information. If you =>
____________________________________________________
were lucky enough to find a salesperson with compu-
ter know-how, chances are it was Model I/Z-80 know-
how. No help there.
Customer service in Fort Worth, on the other hand,
had plenty of information, and it was a toll-free
call away but, Raymond, Martin, and Kathy wouldn't
tell you much more than what was in your manual.
Another dead end.
One of the first books detailing the internal
workings of the 6809 was published in late 1980.
Authored by Dr. Carl Warren, "The MC6809 COOKBOOK",
contains all the information required for assembly
language programming.

COCO CHRONICLES (THE..PART 3) One of the first books detailing the internal
workings of the 6809 was published in late 1980.
Authored by Dr. Carl Warren, "The MC6809 COOBOOK",
contains all the information required for assembly
language programming. Unfortunately it precedes the
first Color Computer editor/assemblers by about 8
months and is pretty much overlooked.
Computer magazines, at this time, were filled with
articles and reviews about every computer except the
Color Computer. When anything does appear, it is
usually comparing the Color Computer (unfavorably)
to the Atari 800. Reviews point to the "chiclet"
keyboard, limited screen display (16 x 32), inverse
lower case, and small RAM size as areas which make
the Computer less desirable than even the Atari =>

400 or the VIC-20.
Perhaps I'm too sensitive but, I couldn't help feel,
"they" were laughing at MY computer! Did anyone else
get that feeling? If so, realize this:
Every computer mentioned so far in this article
(with the exception of the Color Computer, of
course) has been discontinued. Remaining
virtualy unchanged in its five years, our "toy",
as it was often called, continues to flourish!

** PINWHEEL FRACTAL ** I was very fortunate to receive a prerelease
IFRACTAL Program from STUART WYSS-GALLIFENT before
we left for our WINTER stay in Panama City Beach FL.
And then came the 'GOOD JULIA FRACTAL NUMBERS' in
CFDM Issue #49!! The JULIA FRACTALS took between 1
and 3 hours each using an ITERATION setting of 64.
The pictures created were of good quality, allowing
me to create some excellent ENLARGEMENTS.
While experimenting with the Program I tried an
old set of JULIA numbers that I had from an Article
in THE RAINBOW by William P. Nee (FEB 1991 Page 32),
which produced what I named 'PINWHEEL FRACTAL' and
enjoyed viewing using the COLOR-CYCLE Function that
STUART gave to us in CFDM Issue #39. You may add a
hyphen or dash in front of a number from 1 thru 9
and set the cycling speed from fast to slow. =>
____________________________________________________
I've got '-6JUL8/SQS' set to go at a mild rate
of color cycling -- you can RENAME it to try other
rates! Or RENAME it to 'JUL8/SQS' and just enjoy a
RED version of the FRACTAL -- my favorite color set.
With STUART'S SQSSHOW Program you can add a hyphen
and R, G, B, or S to get various sets of colors --
try it -- you might like it!?
If and when you have the IFRACTAL Program you
will also have another choice -> X for RANDOM color
choice, which you can save any combination that you
like. STUART is always making improvements in his
programs to keep us CoCoNuts HAPPY! MANY THANKS!!
At HOME I have a FRACTAL Program for the PC286
that provides almost INSTANT FRACTALS -- you soon
tire of trying things and do not feel like SAVing
any of them. With the time spent watching them =>
____________________________________________________
develop on the CoCo3 you have the feeling of actual-
ly creating something. It's like being an explorer
and going into the UNKNOWN!
I did have a little trouble with the 'JULIA 5'
that STUART provided as the second IMAGINARY number
would not COMPUTE -- I had to go to a plus (+) sign
to get IFRACTAL to accept the numbers -- gave a very
nice FRACTAL. If anyone would like copies of these
FRACTALS, just drop me a line -- we'll be *HOME* in

2 CFDM "SCREEN SAVER"
PROGRAMS Here we have 2 little programs called "CFDMDUDL" and "CFDM-X" which could be really good screen saver type programs because they have colorful animated graphics that are constantly changing but actually do nothing more than entertain your eye. I really enjoy seeing this kind of graphics program and I hope that you do too. (You'll find Jim's "CFDMDUDL.BAS" on the PROGRAM SIDE of this disk. Next month we'll include Jim's "CFDM-X.BAS" for your enjoyment. I really think Jim has a neat idea here. Screen savers are popular on the PC computers and while not as appropriate on the CoCo, the concept is just as neat. So, now I'll challenge each Friend to send in their creation.)=* |
DOTIE'S LAST PICTURES
This is the last group of pictures Dottie finished.
She used the computer to take her mind away from
her pain, therefor some times her concentration
was not to good. Some times if she was having
trouble with one she would keep changing it until
it did not resemble the one she had started at all.
She left no notes so I have little knowledge of
what inspired each picture, I know that "Friends"
started out as a rock formation that had a big hole

GOLDFINCH This picture was the result of a "challenge" by my
wife. She had a wildlife calendar with pictures of
various animals, birds, etc., and wanted me to do
one of a puppy and kitten. However, the proper
colors didn't exist in CoCoMax 3, and it would have
been tough to duplicate the texture of fur.
So, we settled for another -- a goldfinch. I have
no idea what kind of flower it is perched on.

SELF-PORTRAIT Welllll here I go again, doing something new again.
A self-portrait was rather tricky to do since I am
use to a pencil or brush to draw. A mouse can be
difficult to manuever (Question:- I believe TANDY
did have, at one time, a small pencil-like object to
be used to trace pictures to process to CM3. Please,
can anyone tell me if one is available?
(On Side #1 of the Bonus Disk you will find two
animated CM3s. LOADM "VU.BIN" to view them.)
SELF-PORTRAIT is "inside" CFDM in the Family Tree.

RICK: TANDY made an X-PAD many years ago for use
with the COCO 1. I had one at one time and it was
pretty neat, but the software was really crude and
mine soon broke down after the warranty elapsed. To
repair it cost almost as much as a new one...and
they quit making them. (Probably because they were
easy to break-down and the high-cost of repair.)
There was also a Koala Pad. I can't tell you how
this worked.
The self-portrait is GREAT!!

AND WELL AND GOING STRONG! Hello -- At Last!!! JANE MCNEILL EXPRESSES THANKS! SELF PORTRAIT by HAROLD M. <g> |
| Back to top |
ALIVE AND WELL AND GOING STRONG! As I have mentioned on several occasions, I have a
CoCo 3 computer in my fifth grade classroom. Some of
you may also be interested in knowing that it is a
heavily used computer - I turn it on first thing
every morning and it is not turned off until school
is over for the day. (A couple times, it even ran
all night running Stuart's fractal program.)
Not only is the CoCo popular with the students in
my class, but students from other classes drop in
during recess and lunch to see what we have going on
our computer. There's always something exciting!
There are only a very few games that I allow. They
are Photon (which is superb!), Pyramix, and a few
adventure games. (next page please)--->
____________________________________________________
The programs that I encourage the kids to use are:
the Max-10 word processor, CoCo Max III, and Stuart
Wyss's fractal program. In addition, I have a few
educational programs which I wrote myself. These are
primarily math programs (nothing beats the computer
for making drills less tedious) and my reading pro-
gram which appeared in a previous issue of CFDM.
Students can use the computer when they have comple-
ted seat work and during recess and lunch (we eat
lunch in our classrooms at my school). Otherwise, I
try to schedule some time at the end of the day once
a week for a short computer class..
In addition to our CoCo, we also have a DMP-105, a
Color Graphics printer, and a DS-69 digitizer. -->
____________________________________________________
The students have a great time using the CoCo. I try
to teach them a little about computers besides how
to play games and they have responded positively.
The main reason that I continue to use the CoCo is
I can program anything and everything on it that I
need in my classroom. That includes educational pro-
grams to meet specific needs as they arise. I know
of no other computer that is so programmable as the
CoCo. In fact, I don't think that there is another
computer available at any price that offers so many
programming possibilities as the CoCo!
And that in a nutshell, is why the CoCo is alive and
well and still going at Good Shepherd School!

Hello -- At Last!!! Although I've been a part of the CFDM since the
beginning, I have never introduced myself.
I have been a COCOnut since about 1984 when I
got my first COCO, a 64-K COCO2 with a tape re-
corder. Like a lot of you, I really suffered
when Tandy "left town" but my COCO3 (upgraded to
512K) have survived with the help of CFDM and
friends.
My husband and I are both retired -- he from
South Central Bell Telephone Co. and I from
the Jefferson Parish School System. We spend
a lot of time travelling and have had some great
trips.
=>
____________________________________________________
I have a lot of hobbies-- puzzles
(crosswords,etc),painting (especilly water-
colors), reading, bowling and of course,
my COCO. I never did get very proficient at
programming, but I do like to tinker with pro-
grams that other people write. I have tried
painting with the computer and some of them are
presentable and I hope to submit some of them in
the future.

JANE MCNEILL EXPRESSES THANKS! I recently received a phone call from Jane McNeill,
widow of our good friend Jim McNeill. Jane told me
that she had received many letters and cards from
the Friends, expressing their sympathy at her recent
loss. Jane was most appreciative of your outpouring
of friendship and I'm sure it has been a comfort to
her during this very trying time.
Let us continue to remember Jane in our prayers.

RIBBON PROBLEMS ELATED by Ben Walker <g> WE NEED MATERIAL!!!! |
| Back to top |
DMP-105 RIBBON PROBLEMS I have a DMP-105 printer that I use at school in my 5th grade classroom. I have used it for years with- out any problems. Recently, I noticed that the hard copies it was printing were beginning to look very pale. "Time to get a new ribbon," thought I. So I hurried on over to the Shack and purchased a new ribbon. However, the new ribbon would not feed out of the cartridge except if I pulled really hard. It caused the print head to seize up. So, I went back to the Shack and got an exchange. However, the new ribbon is only slightly better than the first one. It still has too much tension on the feed side and causes the print head to slip or seize up. It seems to me that there is a design flaw here. Does anyone have a solution???????????????? *** |
WE NEED MATERIAL!!!! Although this issue is full, we do have a need for
material from our Friends. (Can you imagine....for
51 issues, that's 102 disk sides not counting the
Bonus disks, we (YOU and i) have managed to create
enough CoCo material to fill all those diskettes!!)
At this time we need Family Tree entries, Programs
(both small and great), Reviews, Articles, and
Graphics. Of course we appreciate anything and
everything we get.
So let's stay creative and productive....and keep
CFDM enjoyable for all!!!

KUDOS TO CONTRIBUTORS TO #51 !! My sincerest thanks to the following Friends who have made this issue possible: Norm Barson, Jim Bennett, Ray Berney, D'Arcy Brownrigg, Larry Bryant, Buck Carden, Earle D. Eason, Raman Ensminger, Herb Forger Sr., Dottie and Rolland Funk, Betty and Arnold Garlic, Jim Gibbons, Mike Gross, Art Hinman, Arthur Hallock, Phillip Kenney, Andrew Kenny, Keiran Kenny, Dan Maguire, Gordon Matthews, Betty McCormick, Winnie McGinnis, Jane McNeill, Esther Millard, Harold Moenich, Godfrey Moll, John Pendleton, Alfredo Santos, Roberta Sowell, Jerry Tofte, Robert A. ONWARD CFDM SOLDIERS !! Can you believe it...out of school again. Here it
is the first day of Spring and we have about 4 to 5
inches of snow! We've missed 17 days so far this
winter...and that has to be made up in June! It's
going to be a long school year!!
But there is an upside to getting off today! I now
have a chance to get a little work done of CFDM and
maybe even straighten up headquarters a little. I've
also been running off some disks that I plan to send
to the Chicago Fest. Ron Bull has volunteered to
display some of my CFDM products at his booth. That
will work out just fine for me. I've never been
able to get to the Chicago Fest and I'll bet there
are some CoCoists there who would love to have some
of the SUNDOG and CoCoPRO! software at a bargain! =>

The title of this entry is ONWARD CFDM FRIENDS and I
just want to take a few lines to say thanks to those
who have been so faithful for so many years! Yes
our numbers have dropped off and many of our very
able contributors are no longer with us. But we
still have plenty of talented Friends and many loyal
supporters. So thanks to all who have renewed and
sent in notes and letters of support! We will do
our best to make it to our goal of the 21st century!
A special note of thanks to Jane McNeill who has
been so kind as to make a gift of Jim's CoCo system
to me. I plan to keep Jane informed of our group by
putting her name on the HardCopy mailing list.
Again, thanks for the wonderful gift Jane!! =>

* RICK'S PICNIC II * MURIEL & I are looking forward to attending an-
other RICK'S PICNIC at LIBERTY, KY in JULY! YES I
did take NOTES at the FIRST PICNIC and made good use
of them this WINTER in creating MAX-10 CLIPART, Let-
ters, Notes and Cards for my FRIENDS. I learned a
lot from all of the Sessions that we had and hope to
even learn more this next time.
By July I should have a PC with EMULATOR capab-
ilities, and will have many more Questions about how
to make all the GOOD THINGS happen on it -- CFDM on
it!!! Could use an INSTRUCTION COURSE!?
I wrote to JEFF about the possiblity of a HIRES
Joystick driver in the EMULATOR as I do enjoy CoCo-
MAX III and MAX-10?
It would be GREAT to meet a few more CFDM Fri-
ends!!! CoCoNut Godfrey ==>

RICK: And we are looking forward to seeing you and
Muriel again too! And thanks for encouraging Jeff
on that hi-res interface feature for the emulator.
That would certainly be welcomed...then we could

enabled me to think up ideas for programs faster
than I could write them seems to have deserted me.
I hope that the position will change for the better

RICK: Thanks for all you've done already Keiran..

the cutoff point. I'm enclosing same for now and
will pay for the new year at that point. And I do
plan to be there to give my all. I wish I were more
talented as most of the other supporters.
You certainly have done a tremendous job with CFDM
and are so lucky to have the help of Donna and the
girls. I don't know what I would have done after I
lost my husband if I hadn't had CFDM to keep me busy
and interested. Give them my best and sincere

COMING TO THE PICNIC ??? Dear Rick,
...So enclosed is my $15 bucks to complete the
quarterly year plus another 6 for a sample copy of
PCFDM. I find myself using the PC more and more and
the CoCo less and less, but at the moment Jean and
I are in Florida and of course we brought only the
PC with us. But I do have the emulator installed
along with lots of CFDM! In fact the CoCo directory
is almost as big as the windows directory! Those
snap shots do take up room. Long live the CoCo even
though it's in a different case!
About the picnic, Jean and I will tentatively plan
to come if we can tie in with an Elderhostel program

your place.
We are in Punta Gorda, FL and have been here since
the 1st of January. We will be heading north after
the 1st of April. Our daughter lives in Tampa and
we spent xmas with her before coming on down here to
this place we are renting. The weather has been
cool but still very pleasant according to our
northern standards!
See you later and God Bless!

Kudos to CoCo Friends I have been remiss in sending thanks to the
Friends who have been very helpful with my problems.
I wish to especially thank James C. Mills and
Leslie Waltz who not only wrote to give me answers
but also sent disks with the utility programs
necessary and much more. Mr Mills also sent me a set
of his Thaediak Pictures - I have no grandchildren
- also I think I am the only FRIEND in Nevada so I
have no one locally to share these things with.
Herb Shuler sent me some marvelous music which I
enjoy very much. Terry Simon from MI&CC has always
answered my many questions and so have you, Rick.

those of us who are not programmers are fortunate

You certainly have done a wonderful job
with CFDM and I have thoroughly enjoyed every issue.
My thanks goes to all of the great people who
support CFDM with their generous contributions of
time and talent. I know I'll enjoy the switch to
quarterly issues. Maybe I'll be able to keep up a

the CFDM, yes into the 21st century!
I have both emulators running on my 486. So far

the rest for the ARTISTS to add their own colors.
I've also converted them to CLIPART to be used

MUSIC As were so many of Duke Ellington's compositions,
Satin Doll was written originally as an instrumental
for his band and first recorded as such in 1953,
with a terrific piano solo by Ellington himself. The
addition of lyrics by Johnny Mercer in 1958, trans-
formed it into a standard with too many recordings
to recount. "Caravan" conjures up images of Rudolf
Valentino riding through some dusty black and white
desert. Yes, it was a Duke hit, but the tune
achieved even greater success in versions by Billy
Eckstine, and Ralph Marterie and his Orchestra.
"Mood Indigo" was originally conceived as an
instrumental, which he titled "Dreamy Blues" in
1930. A year later, Mitchell Parish gave the tune a
new title and lyrics that helped make the song a
tremendous hit. =>

THANKS TO SEVERAL!!!! Well here I sit writing this with a RED FACE! I
know the many friends who helped me when I was in
need of a good Spread Sheet Program probably thinks
that I didn't appreciate their help. However, that
really isn't the case at all. It just seems that I
have this problem of being VERY SLOW in getting
around to saying THANK YOU for your help!
First, I want to say THANK YOU to Rick for putting
my request in CFDM, since, if I remember correctly,
I just wrote him a little note, hand-written at that
asking if he knew of a good program.
Next, I want to say THANK YOU to Garry Spencer in
Tampa, Flordia who sent me a copy of Dynacalc that
he had got from the Mid-Iowa & Country CoCo Club =>

Library + some other good programs etc. He also
included the Docs with it.
Next, I want to say THANK YOU to Charles Gibson of
Edwardsville, Illinois who sent me 2 spread sheets,
Cococalc and Cheap Spread, with details on how to
use them.
Last, I want to say THANK YOU to Terry Laraway of
Bremerton, Washington who, didn't send me anything,
but spent a long distance phone call to check and
see if I had gotten any spread sheets. He said he
had Dynacalc available if I hadn't. I had already
received a copy from Garry Spencer. I didn't get to
talk to Terry when he called, I believe my daughter
talked to him, so I returned his call but still =>

didn't get to talk with Terry, which I count as my

So, again I want to say THANK YOU to all of you guys

A Mixed Up Adventure Here's a mixed-up adventure program that pits you
against the dungeon/building/layout/structure/rooms.
You can see 1 object in each and every room, but you
can't (or shouldn't) pick up. Your only objective is
to get out of there. But how many paths are there?
I won't tell. This program was put together mostly
by T&D's "THEGEN.BAS" adventure program maker found
on the Public Domain AD2 Adventure disk. And further
refined on the TW128 W.P. It's easy for people to
write programs, once you find the right tools and
get the knack...

DAILY ORAL LANGUAGE TUTOR While we were out of school during the "blizzard of '96", I had some time to work on a program for my school. It is called the DOL TUTOR because it allows our students to practice their Daily Oral Language sentences. We've just been using it a few days, and I can't yet tell you if it will be helpful in the student's preparation for their weekly DOL exam, but I do feel good about it. If you have students that you would like to use this program with, I advise you to be sure and go over the sentences and the rules which apply before using the DOL TUTOR. Our practice at school will be to introduce the sentences on Monday, review them on Tuesday, use the computers on Wednesday and Thursday to practice, and then test the students on Friday.=> ____________________________________________________ (NOTE: The program may not be bug free at this point and the data may not be either. It is very tedious work to prepare the data for the ten sentences in each lesson. One of my aides and I averaged an hour in putting one lesson in the DOL TUTOR.) After introducing the sentences to the student, RUN DOL6-21.BAS and let the student try correcting the mistakes in the sentences. Please be aware that the only errors the computer will catch are those which are already in the original sentences and which remain unchanged. Example: If the sentence says: bill ate oranges - there are two errors; capitalize Bill and put a period at the end. If the user should capitalize "oranges", the computer would not => ____________________________________________________ count that as a mistake. Other tips: the F2 key is used to toggle the under- line feature on and off. BE SURE to direct your students to press the Enter key after each typed line. Example: If the passage has one sentence that extends onto the second line, you should type in a corrected version of the top line, PRESS ENTER, then correct the second line and the PRESS ENTER. After completing a sentence you will be told how many errors were in the passage, and then how many you found. You will have a chance to go again if you aren't 100% correct. Then you can press the space bar to see each error and the rule that was broken. I hope you enjoy this program! =* |
DDIR.BAS (HARDCOPY FEATURE) "a dual directory utility"
When Rick wrote and told me that he couldn't come up
with a listing for the fiftieth issue of HardCopy, I
started to dig deep within my old bag of short
programs.
First, I came up with a hexadecimal memory changer
that looked interesting, but I'm sure that there are
only a few people who would have any use for that.
Then I found an old version of a two column listing
for the CoCo II.
Since the first time I used the Emulator, I have
been having trouble gaining access to a decent
listing of the files on disk. They just fly by =>
____________________________________________________
so fast, that there is no way to read it, and
pressing enter, and then pause is absolutely no help
at all. Before you can press one key, and then the
other, the directory flies by and you still can't
read it.
So, now having a particular need for a program, I
tried to use it on the CoCo III. Whoops, that didn't
work... The program locked up!
With just a few modifications, I got the program to
run just fine on the CoCo III, and the Emulator. The
program gives me a directory of any of the drives,
and if it is too long to fit on a single page, will
wait until I press a key for the rest of it. Just
what I needed, and I'm sure that others will =>
____________________________________________________
have a use for it as well, if they haven't already
written it...
Now, bear in mind that I would not presume to take
full credit for writing this little program, but I
have absolutely no idea as to where at least parts
of it might have come from. The files that I was
digging in appear to have been written about twelve
years ago, so if anyone might recognize a part of
the code as written by themselves, please step
forward and claim the credit where due. As I recall,
there were several such programs written over the
years, and for that reason I didn't consult past
issues of the Rainbow and thereby infringe on any
copyright rights that belong to others.
(See Part 2.) =*

DDIR.BAS PART 2 If anyone has a better program to do this, send it
in. We can always use short programs such as this
for just this sort of emergency. In the meantime,
enjoy the use of this little utility, and view your
directories in slow motion without cutting the
turbo in your Emulator...
-----
RICK: Thanks for the rescue Arthur! This is a neat
and useful little program...and it is the kind of
program that encourages one to see if they can come
up with something like it. (I may try that myself!)
DDIR is located on THIS SIDE of THIS DISK. Check
out the directory.
=>
____________________________________________________
By the way, if you RUN DDIR.BAS from the Magazine
side of CFDM, you'll find one garbage file. It's
something like VVAR.BAS... I'm guessing the reason
for this is that DDIR.BAS checks thru sector 12 of
the directory track (17)... and since all of these
sectors are never used by CFDM, it picks up this
"garbage" and lists it as a file.

Integer Fractal Program View text file associated with this article Having been "field-tested" by a few fractal nuts who
got advanced copies, my latest fractal program is
now being released through CFDM. It is called
IFRACTAL, because it uses Integer math, rather than
floating-point math like SFRACTAL does. The result
is a quicker program, but with limits. Floating-
point math allows you to get very small with numbers
but integer math quickly reaches a limit. After
about 3 or 4 consecutive zooms, the computer will
beep at you, meaning its limit has been reached.
This is the trade-off for greater speed.
IFRACTAL consists of only two files:
IFRACTAL.BAS - the main program
IFRACTAL.BIN - the save/load/compute routine
->
____________________________________________________
IFRACTAL will save and load fractals using my
proprietary SQS compressor. You can start and
finish fractals at your convenience. You can also
color-cycle your fractals at various speeds, or use
Red, Green, Blue, Standard, or Random color sets!
You have six different resolutions available, plus
three coloring algorithms. The program computes
Mandelbrot and Julia fractals. Look for the article
with some really good numbers for Julia fractals!
The main menu is completely redone. The save and
load routines will get customized directories, plus
check for overwriting of existing files.
The program runs equally well on a real CoCo 3, or
on the emulator, on which it was written.
->
____________________________________________________
If you are familiar with my other fractal program,
or even with fractal programs in general, you can
load and run the program right away. You should
have no trouble using the program. If you want to
find out more about it, or are a beginner, you can
run "QUIKFRAC", which is a reader/printer for the
instruction manual, called "FRACINST.TXT". You can
choose to read on-screen, or print-out the manual.
If you want to dip into fractals, or want to see
some more speed (well...) on the first couple of
zooms, then this program is for you!

Left-Justify ASCII Text Files. This program ("JUSTIFY2/BAS") was created as a
companion file to my series of articles featuring
useful GOSUBs. This one applies to the third
article in the series ("GOSUB#03/BAS"). The purpose
of this program is to left-justify any ASCII text
file. The program is designed to function with ANY
CoCo 1, 2, or 3. It uses the WIDTH 80 screen on the
CoCo 3, and features automatic CoCo 3 detection.
____________________________________________________
After loading and RUNning the program, you will see
the title screen and a menu. The menu offers the
following choices:
[C]HARACTERS PER LINE > xxx
[P]ERCENTAGE JUSTIFY > yyy%
[J]USTIFY A FILE.
[E]XIT. =>
____________________________________________________
The first menu selection lets you set the Characters
Per Line of the file. For an 80-column file, this
value should be set to 80. The default value is 79
on a CoCo 3 and 31 on a CoCo 1 or 2. These are the
values that I happen to use on 80- and 32-column
files. To change this value, press the [C] key and
then enter the new value, which must be between one
and 255. You will then be returned to the menu.
====================================================
The second menu selection lets you change the
Percentage Justify value. This value merely
represents a percentage of the Characters Per Line
value. It's purpose is to make sure that a line is
of a certain length, else it will not be justified.
This value is initially 66%, and I find that this is
a good value to use. To change this value, press =>
____________________________________________________
the [P] key and then enter the new value, which must
be a number from one to 100. You will then be
returned to the menu.
====================================================
The third menu selection allows you to justify a
file. Press the [J] key to select this function. You
will then be prompted for the Input (source) and
Output (destination) filenames. If you are using a
single drive system, or a dual drive system in which
both files will exist on the same drive, then the
filenames must be different. If the files will be on
different drives, then the filenames may be
identical. The filenames MUST be of the following
format: "d:FILENAME/EXT".
Where : d =The drive number of the file;
FILENAME=The name of the file, which must =*
|
Left-Justify ASCII Text Files 2. be exactly eight characters in
length. If the filename is less
than eight characters, then you
must add spaces to the end of it
until it is eight characters long.
EXT =The extension of the file, which
must be exactly three characters in
length. If the extension is less
than three characters, then you
must add spaces to the end of the
extension until it is three
characters in length.
Once you have entered the input and output
filenames, the program will then begin the
justification process. Each line will be displayed=>
____________________________________________________
as it is written to the output file. Once the entire
file has been justified, you will see the following
prompt: "DONE! PRESS [ENTER]." Pressing the [ENTER]
key will return you to the menu, where you may
justify another file, or exit the program. Once a
file has been justified, you may then load it into
your favorite word processor for some fine-tuning.
====================================================
Option four on the menu is simply the [E]XIT
function. Press the [E] key, and you will exit the
program to BASIC.
====================================================
Please read the file "GOSUB#03/DOC" for more

MAX 10 PAGE DESIGNER I recently bought Jim Bennett's Page Designer
disks. I have been having a ball so to speak.
I have not mastered the use of these disks yet.
They will increase my usage of MAX 10 in the
days to come.
For anyone that uses MAX 10 they are well worth
the price, if you don't now have them.
Jim, You may be getting some questions later.
I look forward to every issue of CFDM.

Re-View of McNeill Funnies
I, like other CFDM friends I'm sure, was saddened by
the loss of Jim McNeill. As a tribute to Jim I felt
that I would put together some of his "Funnies" so
that we could all re-view his fine efforts from one
disk. I hope you all enjoy them once again.

| CGDP DATA FORM III INPUT ERRORS HOOKING UP COCO PERIPHERALS? IS FD-500 30 OR 40 TRACK? NEEDS INFO ABOUT THE EMULATOR |
| Back to top |
CGDP A few days ago my wife asked me to make a banner
to welcome our soon to arrive Pastor. I went to
COCO GRAPHICS DESIGNER PLUS, that I had not used
in many months. After learning all over again
I completed the job. My interest was renewed.
Now for the question. Can anyone tell me how to get
the extra fonts talked about in the user's manual?
I would like to use the program with other fonts.
FONTA and FONTB disks can be converted to CGDP
format.
Help anyone??????

DATA FORM III INPUT ERRORS Betty McCormick dropped me a note and said that she was having difficulty with my database program DATA- FORM III which appeared in issue #30 of CFDM. She asked if anyone else was having the same problem. Her problem was this: when she pressed the "L" key for LOOK, she would get an INPUT ERROR. This hap- pened also when she chose option #7 from the print menu. The cause is simple: if no data has been put into a file, the database has nothing to LOOK at. Conse- quently, if you select this option before you have INPUT data, you will get an error message. INPUT some data first before you try to look at it. I am sorry if this was not clear in the docs. *** |
HOOKING UP COCO PERIPHERALS? How do you hook up a 3 1/2" drive to a FD502 (disk)
interface?
and...
How do I hook up a CD ROM drive to a FD502 (disk)
interface?
- Earle Eason
2612 NW Pitkin Lane
Huntsville, AL 35810-3510
-----
RICK: Earle, I saw an article, just recently, on
hooking up a 3 1/2" drive....but I cannot for the
life of me remember where I saw it and I have =>
____________________________________________________
not been able to find it. Maybe one of our Friends
can give us that information. (If you can and send
it to Earle, please send it to CFDM for publication
too!!)
Per hooking up the CD ROM drive...I'm not sure that
is possible, but if it is I cannot see how one might
put it to use. There are no CD ROM disks with CoCo
material (to my knowledge) and if there was there
is no way to get the material off the disk. And,
of course, any PC CD ROM disks would be useless
since that code will not run on the CoCo!
I invite others to respond to Earle's questions!

IS FD-500 30 OR 40 TRACK? Dear Mr. Cooper,
Could you let me know whether the FD-500 disk drive
is a 40 track or not. I had not asked when getting
from a local individual who was in the process of
moving and did not want to take all of what he had
accumulated.
- D'Arcy Brownrigg

RICK: I felt like the FD-500 was a 40 track drive,
as it seems all drives are at least that, but =>
____________________________________________________
I decided to ask for some expert opinion before
replying. Here's what Marty Goodman says about it:
Yes, the FD-500 is a 40 track drive.
Indeed, ALL disk drive systems Tandy ever
sold for the CoCo, with the exception of
the VERY first they sold (the TEC brand
full height drive sold in a GRAY metal
case) were 40 track. This includes the
very next drive they introduced, the Tandon
TM 100-1 full height drive that they sold
in a white case with power supply, under
I believe the same catalog number.
--- marty =>
____________________________________________________
ps Also all Tandy drive systems after
that first one were quite happy stepping
at 6 ms step rate.
Isn't it odd that Color Computer Disk
Basic users were (until they upgraded
to ADOS or some other third party DOS
enhancement) locked into drive parameters
that were so utterly obsolete even at
the time of the early days of the Color
Computer?
