"ABOUT CFDM"
Rick Cooper

COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who
still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with
that format exclusively.

A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong.
By providing a unique means of communication, maybe
old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our
knowledge and experiences!

The success of this effort depends on each one who
becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/
her two cents in the form of articles, programs,
opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will
all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the
manual with your starter kit for details on how to
submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =*

Winter Morn
Jim Gibbons

I saw this picture of a misthy, chilly
morning in winter. I had to just try to draw
this picture because I'm so fond of the winter
months. I hope this finds you all keeping
warm this winter and I hope to be making new
pictures from different states in the near
future. I'm waiting for some pictures to
arrive in some travel magazines to do this.

A SURVEY FROM ACS
RICK COOPER/ATLANTA COMPUTER SOC

I recently received this survey from the Atlanta
Computer Society. ACS is the local Atlanta CoCo Club
which sponsors the Atlanta Fest each year. They are
interested in continuing the event and are looking
for input as to how to have a more successful fest.

I'm sure everyone on their mailing list received a
copy of this survey and hopefully returned it with
some good ideas. In case you didn't receive a copy,
I'm enclosing the message and questions here. I'm
sure they would appreciate hearing from everyone.

STILL ACTIVE COCO
WILLIAM ASTLE (DELPHI Message)

A DELPHI transmission. Jan. 13, 1996 to Rick.
----------------------------------------------------

I have begun work on my series on assembly language
but it is progressing slowly due to the volume of
school work I have to do. It is, however,
progressing.

I think I shall use this opportunity to say that I
support the move to a quarterly publication since it
definitely gives us more time to provide quality
content and of course allows you to have some sort
of life.

I now own a PC as well as a CoCo and I even have a
2400 baud modem. Man is it slow. Too bad I =>

can't afford PCFDM since I might be able to provide
valuable input there on the subject of programming.
Oh well, I'm sure you know how budgets work.

                    - William Astle
----------------------------------------------------

RICK: Great to hear that William is chipping away
on that assembly series of useful routines. And...

I responded to William's statement about PCFDM by
asking about his interest in marketing PCFDM to our
Canadian friends. We'll talk more about this later
and hopefully make it a reality. This will be a
helpful situation to everyone I believe. Here's
why:                                        =>

EVERY OUT-OF-COUNTRY CFDM OR HARDCOPY SUBSCRIPTION
IS A BREAK EVEN PROPOSITION AT BEST. As you know
CFDM and HARDCOPY are offered at the same price to
everyone world-wide. At first we asked for $36 for
HARDCOPY to out-of-country Friends, but since many
responded with $30, we just went with that. But if
you will consider the extra postage to such places
as Australia, Holland, England, etc., and count up
the cost of a mailer, disk(s), label, etc., then add
in the cost in time for duplication, preparing the
mailing, wear and tear on hardware (especially on
disk drives) and you will see that the above state-
ment is an honest appraisal. I have advertised PCFDM
at a higher rate to out-of-country Friends, but if
it is produced and mailed in their country, then we
can have the same rate for everyone. =*

THE NEW PCFDM!!
RICK COOPER

As you have read in recent issues of CFDM, in the
latter part of 1995, I attempted to start a new PC
disk magazine. Due to a number of factors I have
decided to turn the emphasis of that project, PCFDM,
to the CoCo3. It will be more in line with where my
real interests have always been and it will allow us
to bring some unification to the CoCo Community.

Here's what I'm proposing to do. The first issue of
the NEW PCFDM is currently progressing very nicely.
Using the same drivers that Jeff Vavasour wrote for
me, we will now produce a quarterly PC disk magazine
that will include information from each known source
of CoCo material. L. E. Padgett has already agreed
to let me publish the entire contents of Adventure
Surivivors!! The Glenside Club has been =>
____________________________________________________

approached with the same request. They will consider
the question at their next meeting. Frank Swygert's
68'micros and Terry Simons of MI&CC's UPGRADE have
been invited to display selections from their
publications in PCFDM. I hope to have a DELPHI
REPORT section and I'm asking Jeff Vavasour for
input for a Emulator section. There will also be a
little PC material. In addition to all of this, each
disk will include Emulator .DSK files of a current
CFDM issue!! Sounds great doesn't it??

For those with a PC, PCFDM will be a wonderful
"window" (no pun intended) to the CoCo Community!
And for the CFDM Friends there will be reports in
CFDM as to the material in PCFDM! This project
really has possibilities!!               =>
____________________________________________________

If you have a PC or would like a copy of the first
"sample" issue, just send me a few dollars to cover
the disk, mailer, and shipping and handling. I want
you to help me make this PCFDM a success. We won't
have to have hundreds of subscibers to be viable.

By the way the NEW PCFDM will be a quarterly and the
cost will be $30 per year. Each issue will be sent
the month following the regular quarterly CFDM disk.

So please help support the new effort at keeping the
CoCo alive....join and tell others about CFDM and
the NEW PCFDM!!!

TOOL TEXT
TERRY LARAWAY AND BILL BAKER

Welcome to SMALL GRAFX ETC.'S TOOL. Version 2.5
              ($15 plus shipping)

TOOL is - in it's present form - a CM3 file mani-
pulator plus a number of graphics utilities for the
High Resolution screen for the CoCo 3 - especially
for the HSCREEN2 sixteen color mode.

The requirements for the full use of this utility is
a Tandy Color Computer 3 with 512K upgrade, a floppy
disk drive, and a CGP color printer. Each picture
file requires four contiguous 8K blocks of physical
memory for storage. TOOL uses the first 52 blocks of
physical memory for CM3 file and HSCREEN2 manipula-
tions leaving the top 12 blocks for BASIC and system
usage. Since each screen requires four =>
____________________________________________________

contiguous blocks (8K blocks) of physical memory
and since this utility identifies each screen with
the number of it's first block of memory, screen
slots are identified by the following numbers in
ascending order: 0,4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32,36,40,44,
and 48. In most TOOL utilities, screen slot numbers
can be input by the user using ONLY the above
numbers.

The following is a list of TOOL operators and some
descriptions: FLIP, LOAD, PRINT, MOVE, LOOK, SAVE,
ROLL, CHANGE, SCROLL, OVERLAY, CLEAR, COLOR, ZOOM,
SHRINK, and KILL.

FLIP-Flips screen from right to left, top to bottom
or inverts the screen.                      =>
____________________________________________________

PRINT-Prints multiple screens already in memory on
the CGP-220 Color Printer.

MOVE-Moves a screen from one screen slot to another.

ROLL-Sequentially rolls the palette colors.

SCROLL-Scrolls physical memory starting at block 0.

OVERLAY-Overlays one screen with selected pixels of
another screen.

COCO3/CFDM INTO 21ST CENTURY!!
RICK COOPER

Yes, that's our new slogan and our new battle-cry!
Let's take the CoCo into the 21st century! It can
be done. But how....

We've all heard that hindsight is better than fore-
sight, and I'll agree. If I had the CFDM experience
to do over, there's certainly some things I'd do
differently. Not that we haven't been successful
and not that I'm not very well pleased with what we
have accomplished...but of course there are some
things I'd do differently. And some of those things
are key ingredients to making good on our new goal.

Such as, I've always wanted the community to be
united and I've worked towards that goal but not
always with great effect. The CoCo Registry is =>
____________________________________________________

just one example of an attempt at unification. And
now with the NEW PCFDM, I'll make a second. This
one will hopefully meet with some success. (Read
about the NEW PCFDM in ACTIVE COCO, this issue.)
There must be a common thread somewhere. And there
must be participation...and there must be a flow of
new projects and new products...and there must be a
faithfulness to the goal. We have always had that
with CFDM, but our outreach has been somewhat
limited. We must also support all who are making an
effort to reach the goal. There are others still
active you know!

I believe the NEW PCFDM will be helpful in making
our own group stronger. Because now we have a new
avenue to potential Friends and because we will =>
____________________________________________________

be able to incorporate the other CoCo publications
and organizations into our group thru PCFDM.

I hope each of you will join me in reaching this
goal. I would hope to receive letters with your
pledge of support and with your suggestions on how
we can renew our strength and creativity. I hope
that you can see a renewing of my enthusiasm in this
issue of CFDM. For a few months I was low on energy
and felt my creativity was finished....but I now see
new hope and that does alot for your spirit!!

Many of our capable Friends have not been heard from
for awhile. Won't you turn on your powers again and
let us hear from you too?!

ADVENTURE SURVIVOR MAP
RICK COOPER

One of the new features in the new PCFDM disk is
the inclusion of material from other CoCo groups.
In order to make the sample issue I had to type in
all the articles from L. E. Padgett's latest
Adventure Survivor's. If that was not enough, I
decided to draw his maps and put them in too.

This was a real chore. It took a couple of hours to
write a program to draw the first one! I decided
what I needed was a program to make the layout for
any map. So...I wrote a program, we'll call it "COCO
Layout". This helped quite a bit but with eight more
maps to complete, it was still a lot of work. As a
matter of fact I used up most of one day completing
the remaining maps.
                                            =>
____________________________________________________

I've included a sample of the product with this
issue. It's entitled "AMAPSTD3.NIB" and you can
view it with NIBSHOW.BAS. This map is from the
second Star Trek Adventure. It shows Deck 3 which
is the Technical Departments map.

Now back to the program "COCO LAYOUT". It's not
especially fancy but it allows one to type on either
HSCREEN2 or HSCREEN4 and also to do simple drawings
like boxes, circles, lines, pixles, and filled
boxes. You can also SAVE and LOAD NIB files. I'm
planning on having it cleaned up a little bit and
place it in issue #50.

Thanks L. E. for sharing with us and I've really
come to appreciate your work!!! =*

BACK TO THE COCO
Stuart G. Roberts

Dear Rick

Just a little note to tell you about myself. I re-
tired if Feb 1993 from a job as an Electronics
Design Engineer. I started to travel with my wife
in a 5th wheel. A couple of weeks later in El Paso
I ended up in a hospital with a quadruple by-pass.
I was out in 6 days and 45 days later I ended up in
Alaska doing construction work. I should have just
kept working so as not to have suffered that. I am
just fine now.

Earlier this year my wife said she was tired of all
this traveling so we settled in Iowa in a fix-it-
upper. I got my Coco III out and have now relaxed
with all my Rainbow's.                         =>
____________________________________________________

My last job was designing Precision Oscillators
using a modified Colpits oscillator. The frequence's
were from 1 to 180 MHz. The aging tolerances were
form 1E-9 to 5E-12.

I used a 85 Kyotronics laptop to write all my
engineering programs so that I could carry it in
my briefcase. This unit looks exactly like the
Tandy Model 100 except the routines in ROM were in
a different position and therefore I could not use
Tandy's Portable Disc Drive with it.

One of my programs consisted of the changes of amp
lification due to the temperature changes from -55
to +105 degrees Centigrad ambient. The different
temperatures were printed on a CGP-115.      =>
____________________________________________________

I used blue for less than 25 degrees and red for
more than 25 degrees.

More recently I have written a Accounting program
similiar to those used in small business's. The
main programs are on disk drive 0 and the data
programs are on drive 1. One of the main differences
is that I have no inventory and therefore I have no
Accounts Receivable.

I call it Small Household Accounting system and use
it just as a accounting system for my needs. As soon
as I can get my RAM disk working I should have a
fast operating system.

GOODBYE TO GUY CHARBONNIER!

from a longtime and dear CFDM Friend. - Rick

----------------------------------------------------
My Dear Rick,

Just a word to tell you I am leaving (in fact I have
been out since November, 1995) the CoCo World.

I should say that my equipment left me! No computing
anymore for me, not even PC.

It would take pages and a good use of the English
language to tell you how I feel. "BAD" is the word.
It is like losing a lot of friends in an instant.

life. It kind of sounds like his CoCo went out on
him. I have offered to send Guy the next few =>

copies of Hardcopy in return for his remaining two
CFDM disk issues.

I think it would be great if some of the Friends
wrote to Guy and asked if they could be of service
in getting him back. If Guy did have his CoCo go
bad, he may not realize that it can be replaced. I'm
sure something can be worked out. Anyway, for those
disposed to write Guy, here's his address:

SAY HELLO TO SOME NEW CFDMers!
RICK COOPER

Let's take this opportunity to say "hello" and
"welcome" to two new members of CFDM. They are
Merlin Ross Jr and Larry Greenfield.

Thanks for joining our group fellows! I hope you'll
feel right at home and feel free to join in on the
conversation!!

Merlin is from San Antonio, Texas. That's a town
that sounds familiar. He reached us by calling
Tandy! He's also looking for a second drive.

Larry is Fountain Valley, California. He is usually
busy on the Internet or other BBSes. Larry told me

PCFDM "EMOTIONS"
HERB FORGER SR

The letter below was received after I mailed refunds
or CFDM subscription extension letters to those who
have renewed for the second issue of the new PC disk
magazine, PCFDM. - Rick
----------------------------------------------------
Rick,

I, for on, feel badly about your letter today RE:
PCFDM. I thought that PCFDMm was a good idea, and I
very much liked the first issue, as well as the
introductory disk.

It's sad that folks don't support projects like
PCFDM. I sent out 25+ disks to friends and relatives
but only got two calls about it. One was about
receiving a blank disk (who's fault was that). =>
____________________________________________________

The other person didn't understand the format (a
niece who doesn't READ directions; just plunges into
a program and then calls for advice.) We all have
one of these in our lief, but she is FAMILY.

The number of renewals (28) really surprised me. But
then the number of FIRST issue people (86) did too.
But I suspect that you sent the majority of your
initial PCFDM promos to CoCo folks.

Thanks for your effort and the efforts of all of the
others who helped put this project together. I just
wish that it had flown.

I'll still be here, supporting YOU and CFDM for as
long as it (or you and I) exist! I personally =>
____________________________________________________

will miss CFDM if and when any one of those things
happens!

By the way, I still load each issue of CFDM onto my
PC via the CoCo3 Emulator to enjoy it, as well as
loading them into the CoCo.

                 Your CFDM friend, Herb
----------------------------------------------------
RICK: Thanks for the GREAT letter Herb and your
GREAT support! Gosh I wish I had a thousand Herbs!
Anyway, you know the story on the NEW PCFDM project
now. I called after I received your letter (above)
and I appreciate your encouragement to continue with
PCFDM in the new format.

QUARTERLY CFDM
VICTOR NEUFELDT

Thanks Rick for not just quiting CFDM -- even if
just quarterly, I think it is just GREAT. Often
wondered how you ever found time to put it out each
month (even with ALL your help). I'm retired (and
supposedly, "Taking a Break"), but still find time a
little short to do all that I'd like.
Once you asked that we mention old programs in
the Rainbow that we perhaps still used or found more
use for. One such program for me was "DJACKET" in
the September 1992 issue pg 12. For a long time I
was useing "DOUBLE40/BIN" to operate my disk drives,
so I found it handy to expand the program to make
jackets with directories for drives 0/2 and 35 or 40
tracks. Tried to eliminate or lessen goofs. My
version was just a bunch of programs for 35 or 40
and for drives 0 or 2 -- then I tried        =>
____________________________________________________

to copy "George Quellhorst's work." BUT I'm no
"George (even a particle) for sure. I made more
messes -- still fumbling around. Wonder if Falsoft
would let it be used?
I've included copies of original and my present
version on disk and "LLISTED." For me it works, but
I feel (know) it could use lots of improvement. My
last failure had almost a page full of "GOSUBS" --
then I got lost -- erased it, but haven't yet given
up.
Also included is a check for more "CFDM and the
"Hardcopy."

QUARTERLY CFDM RECONCILIATION
RICK COOPER

As previously announced, we will be going to
quarterly publication after the June issue. That's
issue #53. At that time I must reconcile all the
subscription accounts. That means that some of you
will have part of your first "quarterly year" paid
for. And a few will even get a refund!!

So here's what I'll do, if you have already paid
for next year's HARDCOPY, you will have a credit of
$30 towards our first "quarterly year". (Remember
the "quarterly year" cost is $30. You'll get four
issues of CFDM and four issues of HARDCOPY for that
price. The "quarterly year" will see issues #54 to
#57. That's September and December of 1996 and
March and June of 1997.)
                                            =>
____________________________________________________

Also if you have paid for CFDM past issue #53, then
you also have a credit of $5 per issue past #53.

Let's take an example. If your subscription number
reads 4-22-55, then you are paid up thru issue #55.
Your credit would be 55 - 53 = 2 (times $5 = $10
credit). This $10 would be applied toward the $30
cost of the "quarterly year subscription".

In case this might be confusing to you, I have
written a little program called "SHOWSUB.BAS" to
calculate how your account stands. Just RUN the
program and type in your subscription number from
your last mailer. Type it in exactly as it appears
on your mailer. Include the dashes too. Hope this
will be helpful! =*

STARTING 5TH YEAR MESSAGE!
RICK COOPER

Whoa! Here we are starting another great year of
CFDM and the CoCo 3!! It's the fifth year! Isn't
that amazing?!

Thanks to a foot of snow in Liberty, I've managed to
get this issue together. We've missed school for six
days so far. That means we'll be going to school in
June...Oh No!!

Anyway we've got a good issue here. Our enthusiasm
has taken a turn upwards and I'm looking forward to
another year of CFDM and the CoCo!!

It seems that I just don't have the time to answer
all the personal questions and letters that I get.
Many times you'll find my answers to your =>

questions in CFDM. Many times I don't know the
answers so I put them in CFDM so that others who
have the information can help you. These Friends of
ours don't let us down very often! You'll usually
get some help if you'll just ask!!

At this time I need to ask our programming friends
to help us out with some neat programs. We also
need Family Trees, Articles, and Reviews. If you'll
just put forth a little special effort now, we'll
soon be in quarterly publication and we'll all have
more time to produce some quality work. Thanks in
advance for your help!!

             THIS MONTH'S HOLY SCRIPTURE
"He that is not against us is for us."
Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of
them should be greatest. And Jesus, perceiving the
thought of their heart took a child, and set him by
him. And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive
this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever
shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he
that is least among you all, the same shall be
great.

And John answered and said, Master, we saw one
casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him,
because he followeth not with us. And Jesus said
unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against

35 OR 40 TRACK?
Vic Neufeldt

Rick, can you get information off these disks in
either 35 or 40 track format? OR would it be best
to format in 35 tracks only?
I seemed to be having a problem with my Entry
Disk -- each time I pressed <Enter> to save an
entry I got the message, "No space left, entry
aborted." Weird. Finally, I just changed that
chip to make this "35 Track" again, made a backup
of a disk at random, erased some of the entries
and then made new ones. Hope you can read this.
                        Vic.

-----
RICK: Yes Vic, I can probably finiggle the info off
of a 40 track disk, but the best method of making
submissions is to use a copy of the submission =>

CONTINUED SUPPORT
BUCK CARDEN

Hi Rick!

You can count on me to give my support to CFDM,
what little it is. I know that you need more time
with your family. Working full time I don't see how
you do all that you do. I am sure that I will still
enjoy the quarterly disks. I am sending a check for
$30, for the next six months. My subscription runs
out with #48. If I remember six months will end at
the time you start with the change.

                                      BUCK
-----
RICK: Thanks so much Buck for your support! You may
not realize it but your subscription is very, very,
very, important to me and to the effort!! =>
____________________________________________________

And yes the quarterly starts after issue #53. I
just sent out #48 today and in your mailer is a
renewal notice that asks you to send just $25 to
see you thru until quarterly begins. I'll be doing
that with each issue for those who are up for
renewal. I know it's little confusing and maybe
that will help us all get on the same page. Those
of you who go past #53 will be updated at a later
date. Don't worry...we're on top of it!!

VIP FRIENDS!

Dear Rick,

Enclosed is my renewal for the next six months.
Although I like things as they are, I am looking
forward to your changes and believe they will be
for the best. I understand and your decision to
devote more time to your family.

Illness and other family matters have kept me from
spending as much time with the computer as I wanted
to these past months. Things are better now. I have
really enjoyed ZENIX. But I have not had time to
fully concentrate on GRAF EXPRESS yet. Even so, it
looks good.

RICK: Glad to hear things are looking up! Thanks!=>

RE: Rick's Most Unbelievable Offer

OK, I'll try another byte. I liked the disk from my
first order so much, I have decided too try some
more of your Rick's Most Unbelievable Offer. One of
these days, I will have all the Color Computer soft-
ware that you have offered over the years.

I would like to order: Photon, Soundtrax Instrument
Disks, NewspaperO9, and NewspaperO9 News Fonts.
                      - J R Waggoner
PS ..is issue #53 the last MONTHLY issue of CFDM?
----
RICK: Thanks J.R.! Yes, with issue #54 we will begin
quarterly publication of CFDM. That's four issues
for $30. Each includes a bonus disk & HARDCOPY! =>
____________________________________________________

RICK,

I just sent you an order for some of the $5 software
packages. But I forgot to ask you for two more
things: 1) Unbelievable Offer #1 and 2) a submission
disk template.

...I filled out a form for the CoCo Registry for
myself, and also for another "CoCo Nut" in the area
here, Steve Secord. Have you published the final
edition yet? If not, any idea when?
                     - Larry Greenfield
-----
RICK: Thanks for your order and the Registry forms!
We are up too 472 members. We need 500. I sent out
39 forms with issue #47. Only about 10 returned. =*

MORE VIP FRIENDS!

Here you will find an enclosed money order for $16
for another 3 month's subscription with CFDM. (Start
with #48.) I know that I'm a little late getting
this sent out, so now it's time to get it done.

Rick, I know that when I renewed my subscription
with you three months or maybe four months ago that
I told you I could send in my submissions. I haven't
due to my Dad's surgeries (3) in Oct. and my mother
passed away on Nov. 3rd. Doesn't allow me to feel
like doing anything which I'm sure you understand.

However, I'm not giving up with CFDM even tho you're
switching to 4 times a year instead of monthly. You
need your time to spend with your family and so
forth.                                         =>

RICK: Thanks for your pledge of support and past
support Rick! I would also like to pass on to you
and your family my best wishes and hopes that your

all the Friends do to!

We will look forward to your submissions whenever
you can get around to it!! Thanks! =>

Just a quick note to tell you I'm so sorry I missed
the Christmas Card Project. I have always taken
part and was looking forward to it. I always read

there was no reference to it there. And, sorry to
say, there was no paper note with my disk.

WHEN CFDM ARRIVES, ALL STOPS!
ARTHUR WEISBERG

Rick:

I see by my last CFDM program disk that my
registration for good service is coming to a close
again ( My # reads 6-12-49.) And I just now finished
enjoying #47 disk. You have been doing a real good
job for all of us. I have often wondered how you
have been able to keep up with all your work let
alone find enough new info to put in the new issues.

I am enclosing a check for another extension of
copies. I look forward to receiving these disks. I
am pretty busy most of the time, but when the new
disk arrives every thing seems to stop.
                                            =>
____________________________________________________

I still use 40-track disks and I still use the
program called "NUTRAX.BIN" to extend your 35 tracks
to 40 tracks and then make back-up disks immediately
before I get to pressing "RUN "C" (ENTER). It has
worked out very well for me up to now. No losses.

....

I am still rather lost with my new multimedia
Packard Bell 2000 Plus computer even though I have
at least read the programs on the PCFDM disk that I
received from you. Maybe you could tell me what is
happening. Also I am still trying to get the CoCo3
Emulator working for me. I am getting close but
still haven't been able toget the "ROM" out of the
CoCo3 yet. I even brought my new CoCo3 backup =>

computer out of storage but it didn't help a bit. I
use ADOS3 and have even used disable and still can't
seem to pick it out of the machine to disk. OH! The
problems with a Dutch head that doesn't change
easily.

Thanks ahead of time for any help I can get to
make the problems work out, if you can find time for
it. It's holiday season and I realize that you are
undoubtably busy as a cat headed for a dirt road.

Now to write the check and enclose it --- have
a nice holiday season and the best of all to your

GODFREY J. MOLL

While working on my CLIPART Files I remembered
the Program by our British Friends (I don't have the
names here in FLORIDA as my DISK crashed and I did-
not have a BACKUP -- SHAME on ME!) in CFDM ISSUE #19
they had two screens of CLIPART in PMODE4.
I ran their Program and separated the CLIPS and
then converted them to MAX-10 CLIPS. Combined them
into a SINGLE File, which I very originally called
CLIPS. I then created a fancy TITLE using the TITLE
MAKER Program by JIM BENNETT -- then combined that
with CLIPS.
I'm always looking for CLIPART to be used with
MAX-10 -- I know I have many more Disks FULL at HOME
and will be working on them in April.

Good Julia Fractal Numbers
Stuart Wyss-Gallifent

Okay, you asked for them. Using any commercial
fractal program, or my SFRACTAL or IFRACTAL program,
you can enter these numbers and get some wonderous
results. And of course, you can then zoom in to
your heart's content, and discover new patterns.

One good thing about Julia fractals is that they
tend not to be copies of the original, unlike the
Mandelbrots.

In my fractal programs, you are asked for four
numbers (low and high real, low and high imaginary)
plus two Julia numbers (A and B), then the iteration
maximum. The resolutions/colorings/etc. are up to
you. It is a matter of personal preference.

TREBLE CLEF-SUSANNA

Back at the old COCO3 again. This time instead of
using BASIC, I used MUSIC3+ and the treble clef
only to see how it would sound. I thought it seemed
fairly nice, so here it is presented. Please don't
compare me with other music transcribers who submit
music to CFDM ! I just enjoy trying every avenue of
the COCO3 and hope to submit as many different types
of material I can to help fill a full disk every
month for Rick. I just wish I could do some real
programming like "You Know Who" and whom I feel a
debt of gratitude. I also wish at this time that we
will see more "utilities" submitted. Especially the
one called "DISKUTIL".

A MUSICAL PROGRAM +
LESLIE WALTZ

Recently received at CFDM HQ was a disk of beautiful
Christmas songs from Leslie. I was impressed and
wanted to share just a taste with the Friends. Very
nice programming Leslie! I've put two songs on this
disk: Joy to the World and What Child is This
Here's an excerpt from the letter:
----------------------------------------------------
Hopefully, this will arrive in time for the enclosed
disk to add to your holiday enjoyment. Run the
program "SONGS.BAS" for a Christmas sing-along.

I might mention; my wife and I sing with about
twelve others in a contemporary choir at our church.
The instrumental music for our choir is provided by
accoustic guitar, flute, and keyboard. Aurora and I
are the only low voices in our choir; with her =>
____________________________________________________

singing in the low alto range, and me in the
baritone range. Aurora and I will sing "All you
Shepherds" (which is one of the songs on the disk)
as a duet for part of the music that our choir is
providing for our church service on Christmas Eve.

About the enclosed disk: The music "BIN" files on
the disk were created using MUSIC3+ which was
written by our good friend George Quellhorst... the
music "SNG" files containing the text that will
appear on your monitor after you make a selection
were made with a word processor (Telewriter 128, in
this case). If you wish to experiment a little bit,
you may be able to create your own text files with
your word processor for use with SONGS.BAS...the
"SNG" files are actually sequential access files,=>
____________________________________________________

and they must contain 24 items too work with SONGS.
BAS. (A double quotation mark, like this "" is
counted as an item in the file, and will provide a
blank line on the screen). Each item in the file
should be no longer than 79 characters (or spaces
and characters in combination)...if you read some of
the SNG files from the disk into your word procesor,
I think you will be able too see what I'm talking
about. And finally, the SNG file must be named
exactly the same as the music BIN file except that
"SNG" is substituted for "BIN" in the name of the
song file. SONGS.BAS will only work correctly if
BOTH the "SNG" and "BIN" file for a selection are
contained on the disk, but the music files that are
contained on this disk can be used with any program
written to play MUSIC3+ music files. =*

Good Measure
H. Allen Curtis

Good Measure (filename GOODMEAS) is a game of
solitaire. How it derived its name I have not been
able to discover.
On the Good Measure screen are displayed three
playing areas. In the main playing area there are 10
piles of 5 cards each. The object of the game is to
transfer these pile cards directly or indirectly to
the playing area called the Foundation. Initially,
the Foundation contains the Aces of spades & clubs.
The third playing area is called the Kings Row.
Cards are transferred to the Kings Row in anticip-
ation of eventual transfer to the Foundation.
On the 10 piles, cards are built in DESCENDING
order & in alternate colors. Starting with each King
in the Kings Row, cards are also built in descending
order & in alternate colors. However, =>
____________________________________________________

cards are built on the Foundation in ASCENDING
sequence by suit - Ace, 2, 3, etc. to 10, Jack,
Queen, King.
In pile to pile play, all the face up cards in a
pile are moved to another pile when the top card of
the moved cards has a value one less than & a color
differing from the bottom face up card of the moved
to pile. In any pile containing more than one face
up card, only the top & bottom cards are shown. The
top card is the one closest to the top of the
screen.
Moves from the 10 piles to the Kings Row are made
similarly. Moves to the Foundation, whether from a
main playing area pile or a Kings Row pile, are made
one card at a time. That is, only the bottom card of
a pile in either of the aforesaid areas can be =>
____________________________________________________

played to the Foundation.
Key commands are used to move cards from pile to
pile, pile to Foundation, pile to Kings Row, & Kings
Row to Foundation. Suppose the face up cards of pile
8 are a black 9, a red 8, and a black 7; whereas the
face up cards of pile 1 are a black Jack and a red
10. Then the face up cards of pile 8 can be LEGALLY
moved to pile 1 by pressing the 8 key followed by
the 1 key. To move the face up cards of a pile to
the Kings Row, press the number key associated with
the desired pile followed by the K key. If the
intended play is legal, the cards will be trans-
ferred to a correct pile of the Kings Row. Similarly
if a bottom face up card of a pile can be legally
played to the Foundation, press the number key
associated with the pile followed by the F key. =*

Back to section index

Good Measure (continued)
H. Allen Curtis

Note: if a pile has only one face up card, it is
considered to be both the top & bottom card. Suppose
the bottom card of pile 6 is a 3 of hearts, pressing
6 followed by F would move the 3 of hearts to the
heart pile in the Foundation & cover the 2 showing
in that pile. To play from the Kings Row to the
Foundation, press K followed by F. When all cards
have been played from the 10 piles of the main play-
ing area & the Kings Row is not empty, pressing K
followed by F causes cards from the Kings row to be
transferred one by one to the Foundation. When all
the cards have been played from the Kings Row in
this fashion, you will have won the game!
When you have emptied a pile in the main playing
area, you may not move any cards to the emptied
pile. That pile is no longer in play. =>
____________________________________________________

If you try to make an illegal play, a beep will be
sounded & the play will be rejected.
On the average you should be able to win one
game for about every seven played. A modified Vegas
style scoring is used. Each game begins with your
score at minus 50. To that is added 4 points for
every card you transfer to the Foundation. Usually,
after 10 games, your cumulative score will be a
positive value less than 100.
At the bottom of the Good Measure screen is a
menu to remind you of the keys that can be used to
make the plays. The menu shows one additional key,
Q, which is used to Quit. Any time you wish to quit
the game, press Q twice in succession. Quitting will
cause a menu screen to appear. On the screen will be
shown your accumulated score. The menu offers =>
____________________________________________________

you two options - Shuffle (play another game of
Good Measure) or Quit.
I just chose the Quit option. =*

Program inside the Magazine
RAY BERNEY

Try these word ladder puzzles! The object of a word
ladder is to change one word into another by alter-
ing one letter at a time and making a common, uncap-
italized English word at each step. No letters may
be scrambled from one step to the next. For example,
to change the word WARM to the word COOL in five
steps, you could choose these words:

                        WARM
                     1. WORM
                     2. WORK
                     3. CORK
                     4. COOK
                     5. COOL

Can you complete the six word ladders below (all =>

Right-Justify ASCII Text Files.
Turner, Robert Allen (The RAT).

This program ("JUSTIFY1/BAS") was created as a
companion file to my series of articles featuring
useful GOSUBs. This one applies to the second
article in the series ("GOSUB#02/BAS"). The purpose
of this program is to right-justify any ASCII text
file. The program is designed to function with ANY
CoCo 1, 2, or 3. It uses the WIDTH 80 screen on the
CoCo 3, and features automatic CoCo 3 detection.
____________________________________________________
After loading and RUNning the program, you will see
the title screen and a menu. The menu offers the
following choices:
                  [C]HARACTERS PER LINE > xxx
                  [P]ERCENTAGE JUSTIFY > yyy%
                  [J]USTIFY A FILE.
                  [E]XIT.                         =>
____________________________________________________

The first menu selection lets you set the Characters
Per Line of the file. For an 80-column file, this
value should be set to 80. The default value is 79
on a CoCo 3 and 31 on a CoCo 1 or 2. These are the
values that I happen to use on 80- and 32-column
files. To change this value, press the [C] key and
then enter the new value, which must be between one
and 255. You will then be returned to the menu.
====================================================
The second menu selection lets you change the
Percentage Justify value. This value merely
represents a percentage of the Characters Per Line
value. It's purpose is to make sure that a line is
of a certain length, else it will not be justified.
This value is initially 66%, and I find that this is
a good value to use. To change this value, press =>
____________________________________________________

the [P] key and then enter the new value, which must
be a number from one to 100. You will then be
returned to the menu.
====================================================
The third menu selection allows you to justify a
file. Press the [J] key to select this function. You
will then be prompted for the Input (source) and
Output (destination) filenames. If you are using a
single drive system, or a dual drive system in which
both files will exist on the same drive, then the
filenames must be different. If the files will be on
different drives, then the filenames may be
identical. The filenames MUST be of the following
format: "d:FILENAME/EXT".
Where : d       =The drive number of the file;
FILENAME=The name of the file, which must =*

                 be exactly eight characters in
length. If the filename is less
                 than eight characters, then you
must add spaces to the end of it
until it is eight characters long.
EXT =The extension of the file, which
must be exactly three characters in
length. If the extension is less
                 than three characters, then you
must add spaces to the end of the
                 extension until it is three
                 characters in length.

Once you have entered the input and output
filenames, the program will then begin the
justification process. Each line will be displayed=>

as it is written to the output file. Once the entire
file has been justified, you will see the following
prompt: "DONE! PRESS [ENTER]." Pressing the [ENTER]
key will return you to the menu, where you may
justify another file, or exit the program. Once a
file has been justified, you may then load it into
your favorite word processor for some fine-tuning.
====================================================
Option four on the menu is simply the [E]XIT
function. Press the [E] key, and you will exit the
program to BASIC.

The R.A.T.'s "GOSUB#02".
Robert "The RAT" Allen Turner.

As promised last month, here is the second
installment in my "GOSUB#xx" series. This month's
featured routine is a right-justify for string data.
The following files are those that relate to this
article:
"GOSUB#02/BAS" : This is the actual subroutine, in
ASCII format, as usual. It may be
merged with your program via the
                 MERGE "GOSUB#02" command.
"GOSUB#01" is also included in this
listing, and this will probably be
                 the standard practice of this
series (i.e. the listing each month
                 will contain all previous
                 subroutines.)
"GOSUB#02/DOC" : This is an ASCII text file that =>
____________________________________________________

                 contains the complete documentation
                 for "GOSUB#02/BAS".
"JUSTIFY0/BAS" : This is a test program for the
                 "GOSUB#02/BAS" subroutine.
"JUSTIFY1/BAS" : This is a program that utilizes the
                 "GOSUB#02/BAS" subroutine to right-
justify ANY ASCII text file. Please
read the entry in this section of
                 CFDM for complete operating
instructions. I hope that you find
                 this routine useful.

You may use any word processor or ASCII file reading
program to read the "GOSUB#02/DOC" file. This file
will give you all of the information necessary
regarding the usage of this months subroutine. =*

COCOBOMBer 2.0

I like the fun stuff Stuart programs! Like Iss. 46 &
CoCoBomber 2.0! A whole heap better than his first
version. I need to see the necessary details all at
once. However, after playing it for the hundredth
times and always getting my primary target and
wasting six other enemy targets, I decided it was
time for some reality checks. Like running out of
fuel. Lie making the failsafe code longer and more
difficult to remember. Like have one or more of your
six missles fail. Real stuff like that. On a grading
curve, I'd give it an A-. Well done, Stuart.

Epson ActionNote Laptop 650C
Stuart T. Wyss-Gallifent

In the spring of 1995, I decided to buy myself a new
laptop computer. My main focus for one would be to
keep grades and lessons and things for school, but
it has quickly become the one I use for everything,
including running the emulator on it! In fact, my
last four or five months of entries have been done
entirely on the laptop.
When I decided to buy one, I wrote down everything
that I really needed in a laptop. I wanted at least
a 486DX-40, color, big LCD screen, and one of those
nifty new GlidePoint/TrackPads. I didn't care about
CD-ROM, SoundBlaster, or gigabytes of hard drive or
RAM. I then looked through Computer Shopper and
listed all the places that offered such a beast for
under $2,000. But I really wanted to see one before
I purchased it. I went out to CompUSA, about an ->
____________________________________________________

hours drive to look at them. I settled on the EPSON
ActionNote 650C. I has 4 meg RAM, a 260 meg HD,
big 10.4 inch dual scan color screen, AC adaptor,
PCMCIA slots, modem plug, etc., etc. It didn't have
a trackpad, but the small trackball works fine.
What I really like is size/weight. Although it is
just over 6 pounds, when I put it in a carry case,it
just seems light. It runs DOS/Windows/CoCo just
fine. It has several power saving features, plus a
486DX2/50 chip in it. You can upgrade the memory to
32 megs, and install a larger hard drive if you need
to.
What I don't like is the amount of charge a battery
can hold. I can typically use it continuously for
about an hour. If the use is not continuous, then
it might last two hours. Battery technology ->
____________________________________________________

has lots of room for improvement! That's really it.

Of course, now, six months later, you can buy more
for less. In fact, 486DX4/100 active matrix 8 meg
machines with SoundBlaster and CD-ROM are just over
$2,000. Sigh, you can't win!

The grey plastic that the laptop is constructed out
of seems pretty sturdy, though I wouldn't want to
drop it, and the 3 1/2 inch drive on the right is
easy to access. On the back is a keyboard port, a
9 pin serial, a 25 pin parallel, a 9 pin SVGA, and
the power switch. Two PCMCIA cards plug into the
left side. The keyboard is not full size, but very
comfortable, and there is a built-in wrist rest.
Trackball is best operated by right thumb! -*

JIGSAW PUZZLES
ORVAL'BUCK'CARDEN

I like working jigsaw puzzles. My interest was
renewed with CFDM#46 SILLISTR puzzle. The earlier
puzzles that came with Rick's Offer #1 had to be
worked at one power on, not so with SILLISTR. You
save it and finish at another time. By trying many
times by renaming, I was able to substitute another
puzzle. I had used the PIXDOCTR on about 40 of the
CCFFRONT NIB files. Used the method making puzzles
used in again in Offer #1. Several would not work
but many did. I now have plenty, and can make more.
My son changed SILLILTR somewhat to make it easier
to change PUZZLES. How about some of you programmers
making it into a menu driven program so we could
select one of several on a disk?? Thank you.

TAPE OF THAT 'SPECIAL' PICNIC
VIC NEUFELDT

Enjoyed your tape very much -- great to see so
many of you, but listening wasn't enough to make me
any more an expert. I'd truly have liked to have
been there and perhaps asked a few questions --
for instance, about what types of "Joysticks or
Mouse" you use for your drawings. I have a hard
time making even a straight line (maybe it is just a
matter of working at it longer?). You were all just
GREAT. Suart's explanation of "Fractal's" was
interesting, but became more so lately when I ran
across a book entitled "Chaos the New Science" (or
something). Now maybe I'll spend more time reading
and trying those "Fractals."
As I said earlier -- I enjoyed it, watched it
more than just once and will look at it again.

Hi Keiran!

I too have several label programs, but this one
looked interesting. But I have three different
labels that I make for my wife to use as return
address labels. I run into trouble when I search.
What can be done, if anything, to solve this
problem? Zip code is the only thing I found to uset
to search with.

Now a joke on Buck as in me. I had been a member of

HELP WITH MASTER DIR 3
GEORGE BRUHL

Dear Rick,

I have a copy of your program called MASTER DIR 3.
I have one problem with it. When I file a directory,
with a flippy disk, it reads the front side okay,
but when I flip it over, it won't read the backside.

For example: BONUS DISK 10.

It will read the front side fine, but when I turn it
over it won't read the back side.

Am I doing something wrong, or is their something on
the back side that it's not reading?

                    - George Bruhl       =>

RICK:Thanks for the opportunity to take an adventure
George! I tried using Master Directory 3 to read the
back side of Bonus Disk #10 and got the same results
as you. After about 30 minutes of experimenting and
looking at the original Master Directory 3 source
code, I found that the program checks for files
which are not standard and rejects the directory for
filing. The reason for this was to keep MD3 from
trying to file an OS9 disk. This would be a =>
____________________________________________________

real problem since the OS9 directories are not on
track 17 (I believe they are on track 1 and not at
all formatted like RS DOS directories.).

Now to the problem. Desmond Rae included a Sound
file with his Bugs Bunny program on that disk. If
you will do a DIR on the disk, you'll see a 6 after
the file named BUGSOUND.SW . According to the manual
for the CoCo Disk System, the standard values here
are 0-3 (see page 59).

Now you can change that 6 to a 2 and the program
will still work and MD3 will file it. Here's how:
Make a copy of your Bonus Disk to use for this. Put
it in drive 0 and type Clear 1000:DSKI$ 0,17,3,A$,B$
:MID$(B$,76,1)=CHR$(2):DSKO$ 0,17,3,A$,B$ =*

To Paul Wolf : r.e. "PIRACY?"
Robert Allen "The RAT" Turner.

In response to Paul Wolf's query regarding piracy &
Public Domain software (issue #46) of CFDM: I think
that I am probably the person that Paul was
referring to, since he did indeed order some picture
disks from me. My ads specifically stated that my
offerings were public domain. This in no way implies
that I am the author of these offerings. Public
Domain software is software that has been given
freely to the public by the author, and in most
cases is free of copyrights. This type of software
can only be sold for a small charge to cover the
cost of the diskette or tape, copying charge and
shipping charge. I charge only $3.00 per diskette
for this service. T & D charged as much as $6.00 per
diskette for their mostly undocumented public domain
diskettes and tapes! I feel that this was an =>

outrageous price! Since their software rarely
contained any documentation, their prices just did
not seem fair! I personally will not include any
undocumented software in my library! If a program is
really good, but undocumented, I will write the
documentation so that I can make the software
available to the CoCo community. Also, it is
perfectly legal for you to copy and distribute any
of the public domain software from T & D, but this
does not include their monthly magazine disks, which
remain the property and copyright of Tom Dykema. You
may also copy and distribute any of the public
domain diskettes that are available from me, with
the exception of the portions of the diskettes that
are written and created by myself, which remain the
property and copyright of myself. I include many =>

custom programs in the library that allow a user-
friendly aproach to using the diskettes and these
programs are copyrighted by me. As a side note, I
have begun to completely revamp the library into a
better, easier to use format. The numbering system
has been changed also. I spend an average of one
month per disk of my spare time. I often think about
just giving up on the library. The low number of
orders just doesn't hardly seem worth the effort.
Alas, I cannot abandon the CoCo community. I love
the CoCo and I must support it! To all purhasers of
the following diskettes: CC3GA-0001, 0002, 0003, and
