"ABOUT CFDM" COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with that format exclusively. A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong. By providing a unique means of communication, maybe old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our knowledge and experiences! The success of this effort depends on each one who becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/ her two cents in the form of articles, programs, opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the manual with your starter kit for details on how to submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =* |

Autumn This heat wave I hope will soon come to an
end with the arrival of autumn. The changing
leaf colors is the signal for cooler weather
and I sure hope to see it soon. We have had a
very rough summer and I'm sure looking forward
to the cooler months here in Pennsylvania.

LET'S ACTIVATE DELPHI!! I've been a member of Delphi for over a year now. I
must admit that I use this service mainly to keep in
touch with Jeff Vavasour and the CFDM Friends. It
seems that there is not a great deal of "CoCo chat"
on Delphi that interests me. And sometimes there
are periods of days when no one leaves a message in
the FORUM, which is the main communication center of
the CoCo Sig. I would have to check but if memory
serves it has been quite sometime since anyone
uploaded a new file to the database there.
The point of this article is that I know that a
number of our Friends subscribe to Delphi (because
I do hear from them there). I believe we could
re-activate interest there if each Friend would make
a practice of leaving a message in Delphi's =>
____________________________________________________
FORUM each time you visit Delphi.
Another aspect here is that the Friends of CFDM are
undoubtedly the most active group of CoCoists in the
world. Please make a practice of signing off in your
entry with "A CFDM Friend". Maybe we can not only
re-activate the CoCo Sig, but also rouse someone's
curiosity about our group.
Now I will do my best to make a count of all entries
in the CoCo Sig FORUM between now (October 21st) and
the next issue. I'll include this count in CFDM's
ACTIVE COCO section and also make a list of the
names I see there.
LET'S DO IT....MAKE SOME COCO NOISE! =*

WELCOME NEW CFDM FRIENDS!!!! Great news!! We have a number of new Friends for our
group. At the recent Atlanta Fest 19 new or renewing

certainly highlighted our trip to Atlanta. And a
number of these folks are very experienced CoCoists
which I hope will soon be gracing our disk with some
of their work! Thanks to all and please feel welcome
to let your voice be heard!!

BAUD - IS IT 87 OR IS IT 88? OUR TRIP TO THE ATLANTA FEST '95 OUR TRIP TO THE FEST (PART 2) |
| Back to top |
600 BAUD - IS IT 87 OR IS IT 88? Both Edward Wolak and Kenney Trevino have disagreed
with Rick in the use of 'POKE 150,88' as the 600
baud printer POKE, by stating that the correct POKE
is 'POKE 150,87'. Okay, I'll try to settle the
argument: 'You are all three correct!' WHAT?
Well, in the early days of the CoCo 1 and 2, TANDY
used 87 as the 600 baud value. When you first power
up these early CoCo's, and type ?PEEK(150), you
would get 87. In the later model CoCo 2's and all
CoCo 3's, TANDY used 88 as the 600 baud value. To
test this, turn your CoCo 3 off and then back on.
Then issue the ?PEEK(150) and you will get 88. In
actuality, most printers will accept either one.
There is an occasional printer that is extremely
touchy and may work with one or the other, but not
both. This is rare however. It would seem that =>
____________________________________________________
E.W. and K.T. have just such a touchy printer. There
may even be a case in which a printer will not
accept either 87 or 88, and may require some odd
value such as 86 or 89, but this is extremely rare!
These problems are usually experienced when using a
serial to parallel converter and/or printer buffer.
This is probably due to the timing of the converter
being slightly off. I hope that this has been of
some help. -R0BERT.

OUR TRIP TO THE ATLANTA FEST '95 For the fourth straight year I was able to make it
to the Atlanta Fest! It was a little different this
year. For the first time Donna and I made the trip
by ourselves. The girls wanted to stay at home so
this allowed Donna and I to take the car (instead of
the van) and have more room for the goodies we would
show.
One small setback was the fact that the annual Apple
Festival was taking place here in Liberty and we had
promised the girls they could attend the big parade.
Since the parade was scheduled to last until four
o'clock, we planned to depart at that time. As you
know things never go exactly as planned. The parade
did finish about 4:15 but when we started down the
street, we found that much of the parade was =>
____________________________________________________
still blocking the town and it was almost 5 o'clock
before we could get out.
Finally we were on the road....Except for stops for
gasoline and one stop to eat a delicious supper at
the Cracker Barrel, we drove straight thru until we
came to Marietta, GA (about than 30 miles from the
fest site). We arrived at about 11:15 pm.
We arose early the next morning and finished the
trip to the Northlake Holiday Inn in Tucker, GA. We
did see Alan and Barbara Dages, Lin and Nan Padgett,
and a few others at breakfast in the hotel dining
area. (The fest area was locked but we could see
thru the glass doors. There were some picture
displays of recent CoCo events including one of =>
____________________________________________________
Rick's Picnic 1995!!)
At 9 a.m. we borrowed a trolley from R. C. Smith and
moved all our stuff to our booth. The fest floor
looked much larger this year due to the loss in
numbers of vendors from last year's event. Those
with booths this year were: Adventure Survivors, the
Atlanta Computer Society, R. C. Smith, Frank Swygert
with FARNA SYSTEMS, OS-9 Users Group, Allen Huffman
with Sub-Etha Software, Gene Adams, Chris Hawks with
HawkSoft, Wittman Computer Products, Glenside CoCo
Club, Ken Fish with Perfect Images Photography, and
MIDI - Demos with Tom Kocourek and Make Carey.
(More in Part II..........)
=*
|
OUR TRIP TO THE FEST (PART 2) Although the numbers of vendors and participants were down, we did enjoy the informal atmosphere and friendly folks. It seems that many had traveled far to attend. There was one party looking for advice on purchasing a computer system for their kids! I seriously recommended a CoCo 3 (although I didn't have one available to sell). Our booth had visitors almost all the time. A number of youngsters spent much of the time playing Puzzles or Zenix on the computers we had set up. Others were interested in our products like HARDCOPY, CFDM, and the special offers on CoCoPRO! and SUNDOG software. We signed up a record 19 new (or renewing) Friends! Most likely it was because I had advertised giving away a 386 PC with keyboard to a lucky winner => ____________________________________________________ which would be picked from all those who signed up for CFDM at the fest that day. Ed Jones of Mobile, Alabama was the lucky winner! Congratulations Ed and I hope you are enjoying the new PC. Ed runs an OS9 Bulletin Board and is an ardent fan of OS9. No matter his "political leanings", I hope Ed will also enjoy CFDM and really become a part of our group! He is a very likeable guy! For the first time in four years I did get a chance to drop in on a seminar. It was Carl England's talk on disk structures. Carl has written a program, "DEFEATER" which allows one to copy most of the copy-protected disks! This program is available from Sub-Etha Software for $20. I was very much interested in Carl's presentation and had an => ____________________________________________________ opportunity to ask a few questions relating to his programs use with the SUNDOG SYSTEMS software. Carl has also joined CFDM and I sincerely hope he will be joining the conversation here! We did see a few of our old friends in Atlanta. Dan Maguire, Frank Daniel, Lin & Nan Padgett, Alan and Barbara Dages, and R. C. and Betty Smith come to mind. We did miss several from years gone by! Finally the day had past and it was time to go. After saying some hurried goodbyes, we hit the trail for home. After 90 miles on the road we had another Cracker Barrel supper and spent the night in Dalton, GA. About noon on Sunday we were reunited with our children at my sister's house. Great trip!! =* |

NIB GRAPHICS Well here I am again, having fun with Rick's NIB program-CM3 TO NIB that is. I had asked in disk #44, about saving the colors when transferring CM3 to NIB and low and behold, Godfrey J. Moll sent me a gem of a program. Foolproof that is! By using the "MINILOAD /BAS" program from the COCOMAX3 disk-RUN "MINILOAD/ BAS"(Enter)-When it asks for"FILENAME"-place the CM3 graphics disk in the disk drive (leave it in)- after entering the picture filename-press (Enter)- Picture will appear-press (Break)-type"NIBSAVER/BIN" -press (Enter)-Wait for disk to stop-type"EXEC"- Wait for the disk to stop-Type"DIR"-last item shown will be "SCREEN/NIB"-The NIB was saved, but can be renamed anything wanted. Thanks a million Godfrey. Thanks also to Roy Putlack for "CFDMDB"-Only wish is that it had "SORT" written in it. HJM 10-02-95 =* |
PICNIC Thought I'd try my hand at a little bit of art. I
really can't draw a straight line without a ruler
but with my CoCo I don't need a ruler, just some
patience. Just look at the entry, "PICNIC" to see
if a few felt like this after Rick's Picnic.

RAIN AT LAST
After a long hot summer, over a month without rain,
and a drought emergency, it is no wonder that our
thoughts have been on the need for water. As this

it in the same way once it arrived.
Select "SHOWERS" in NIBSHOW.

month's disk. As you recall, NIBSHOW was featured

be found there. NIBSHOW is the contribution of our
Friend Stuart Wyss-Gallifent. Thanks Stuart!

War's End - (Europe, May '45)
For months European towns from the Channel coast to the German border have been celebrating their "liberation". For many Dutch towns, this did not take place until the cease-fire for Western Europe on May 5 1945. On May 8 the general cease fire went into effect. Right up to the last moment there were fierce encounters that cost lives. No picture can really tell of the horror of war but, in may ways, only a picture really can. For myself, and millions of others engaged in the Pacific area, World War 2 continued until mid-August 1945. =* |

TREE UPDATE NEW HARDCOPY MEMBER, TED WILLI |
| Back to top |
FAMILY TREE UPDATE I thought it was about time I updated my Family
Tree. It's been two years since I sent my Family
Tree in the first time. A few things have changed
since then. I have moved from Lancaster, Ohio to
a small community named "Pancoastburg" but my
address is Washington Court House. My home is
approximately 200 yards from Deercreek Lake, a large
flood control lake. Thought I'd get in a lot of
fishing during my retirement (ha, ha). In the two
years I've lived here, I've been fishing once. Had
bad luck during my move here. The moving company
lost two large boxes, and my luck one of them
contained all my documentation for all my disks and
programs. I've slowly been replacing most of them.
I am still married to Ruth, 48 1/2 years. I'm trying
for 50 if she can stand me that much longer =>

Hopefully this winter I can spend more time on my

Rick keep the CFDM going. Hope more members start
sending in submissions. We've got to support Rick.

NEW HARDCOPY MEMBER, TED WILLI It was a pleasure seeing you and your wife, Donna,
at the Atlanta CoCoFest. I was glad to see the great
job you are doing with HARDCOPY and I'm pleased to
be among the Friends reading your fine publication.
Maybe you have written about it in a previous issue,
but I would be interested to know what kind of
set-up Arthur Hallock is using to do such a fine
presentation with HARDCOPY. I suspect he is using
Bob van der Poel's Ved and Vprint programs for the
typesetting. I have been considering hooking a laser
printer to my CoCo (I run Ved/Vprint under OS-9 and
Telewriter-128 under RS-Dos) and it would be helpful
to know what software and hardware Arthur recommends
(Note to Ted: Arthur ports CFDM the disk to his =>
____________________________________________________
PC and uses Aldus Pagemaker to create HARDCOPY.)
I am currently running a 512K CoCo-3 with double
disks, a CM-8 monitor, and an Epson LQ-300 printer.
I also have a DMP-105 printer that I use mostly for
mailing labels. I have an AST 1200 modem that I use
now and then through the serial port, but I think I
will start using it more once I get the copy of
V-Term I ordered from you. I am trying to get VT-
100 emulation, since that is what the local-access
university computer center recommends for best
performance. My wife, Elizabeth, has a 128K CoCo-3
with a single disk and a CM-8 monitor. She uses
Telewriter-128 for her word-processing and lesson
planning.

QUARTERLY..EDITOR RESPONSE CFDM QUARTERLY: ARTHUR'S VIEW HAROLD'S CARTOON CLIPS <g> HEART TO HEART..RESPONSE |
| Back to top |
CFDM QUARTERLY..EDITOR RESPONSE The following excerpts were taken from letters from
two CFDM editors concerning our proposed cut back in
CFDM publishing. I would like to thank these Friends
for their response and understanding of my situation
and hope that everyone will stay with us and support
the new format. I'm sure other responses will be
forthcoming and we will publish as many as possible.
-------
As to your FORUM article, naturally, I'm sorry to
see CFDM curtailed, as I really look forward to it's
arrival each month. However, I can appreciate your
need to cut back. I don't see how you have managed
to do so much already. And, sorry to say, the number
of active CoCoists is diminishing. As for me, I'm
trying to keep my hardware backed up so it will =>
____________________________________________________
last as long as I do....As I've mentioned before, I
have literally thousands of CoCo programs of all
types -- more than I can ever get around to trying.
So, while I will miss the monthly issues and will
have to be patient waiting for the quarterly issues
to arrive, I can see why it is necessary. I, for
one, will continue to support CFDM as much as I can,
and hope to help it survive. I'm sure others will
also.
- Norm Barson
----------------------------------------------------
Regarding the Forum entries, I have two opposing
views but I think that the second should and must
prevail:
1. Changing CFDM to a quarterly publication is
certainly a cutback. In my opinion cutbacks =>
____________________________________________________
accelerated the demise of the Rainbow. I expect that
this will be the case for CFDM also.
1. With submissions diminishing there is no workable
alternative to a cutback, such as issuing CFDM
quarterly. As you know, I have wondered where you
found the time to accomplish all that you have. It
was at the expense of family leisure time. I think
the family should come before everything else except
the Holy Trinity. Therefore, it is easy to see why
I am casting my vote for a quarterly CFDM despite my
expectations of its outcome. You have worked wonders
in keeping CFDM going this long with quality issue
after quality issue.
- H. Allen Curtis
=*
|
CFDM QUARTERLY: ARTHUR'S VIEW Frankly, it has been almost surprising to me that
you have been able to keep up with the magazine for
this long, especially after George Q. either ran out
of ideas or just burned out from writing so many in
succession. He and several others have had a great
deal to do with keeping the CoCo alive, and keeping
the magazine active with new programs. One such
person, whom I have admired several times with his
ability, is H. Allen Curtis, as I remember him from
the early Rainbow days. Here again, although I don't
have time to play games or build puzzles, is an
example of his handiwork (The new PUZZLES program.)
As for my part, Rick, I will stand by my previous
agreement, and I will continue as long as I am able
to, financially and timewise, just as long as =>
____________________________________________________
you do. However, most friends are probably looking
at this just as we all did when Lonnie Falk said
just about the same thing, although he was looking
at the project from purely a financial standpoint.
Any change in the magazine from a monthly spells the
beginning of the end.
Getting into it at the (late) date that you did,
Rick (ie: after the fact that Tandy orphaned the
little machine,) left you high and dry if you were
out seeking your first million. One person, nor a
dozen of us can keep the machine and interest alive
for the rest of the world forever, and we all need
at least some free time for our families or life
just ain't worth livin'! "All work and no play
makes Jack..." =>
____________________________________________________
So, Rick, I guess what I am saying is that I will
stick with you and support CFDM as best I can along
with you, but for you to spend as much time with
your family as you need. We'll take up the slack
time with computers, whether CoCo or Compatible...

HEART TO HEART..RESPONSE I just read the CFDM issue 45 FORUM entry of yours,
entitled "A Heart To Heart Talk".
Your article makes PERFECT SENSE to me regarding the
changes to CFDM. While it makes me sad to think
that I (We) will have to wait a while for our next
CFDM issue, we all should realize that for many,
many months, we have EXPECTED another GREAT issue,
without too much thought about our leader and his
helpful family. Not to mention the editors, who
also must do their bit to produce this fine disk
magazine. The bottom line comes down to the fact
that each of us must be faithful to our family, our
primary job, AND THEN our hobbies or side-lines!
I must also agree that not enough submissions =>
____________________________________________________
are flowing in to you, but I for one cannot be of
much help since I am not a programmer. I can only
submit questions, answers (at times), some times a
POTPOURRI item or an ACTIVE COCO entry, but that is
about it.
However I for one will continue to support you and
the CFDM effort, and also the new PCFDM effort,
unless the Good Lord chooses to wipe out my hard
drive!
Rick, live your life with your family, do your job,
and THEN when time permits, keep RCE, CFDM, and
PCFDM alive and kicking for you and the Friends!
Your friend, Herb =*

HI FRIENDS!! Well....another CFDM issue is nearly complete! I do
believe we have a pretty good issue and I hope that
you will enjoy it.
In these times of dwindling community and support,
we, the Friends of CFDM, need to look for new ways
to keep our community thriving. I have introduced
a project to re-activate the FORUM of Delphi's CoCo
Sig in this issue's ACTIVE COCO. I hope we'll see
a good response there.
There are many other areas where help is needed.
Maybe the most important one is in the creation and
production of new software and hardware products. I
know that the Friends provide at least a disk full
each month to our members, but I really would =>

like to see some commercial products appear. Just
recently I became aware of Carl England's DEFEATER
program and we have advertised Terry Laraway's new
THE TOOL in several issues. In the not too distant
past Jeff Cho had some new MAX 10 products. Let's
not forget Jeff Vavasour's CoCo 3 Emulator. This
was not a true CoCo product but it certainly must be
acknowledged as the BEST COCO-RELATED PRODUCT of
1994.
And I want to applaud these for their efforts. What
I'm looking for here is some dialogue on how we can
encourage the continuance of new CoCo products. I
would very much like to hear some suggestions from
the Friends. Please send your thoughts!!
KEEP ON COCOING!!!!! =>

RECRUITING MEMBERS As I reported last month, trying to find and keep
members of CFDM is an ongoing task. And it's getting
harder all the time. Thanks to our success at the
recent Atlanta Fest, we will probably be sending
issue #45 to more subscribers than we have in quite
some time. It could also be the highest number of
subscribers we'll ever have again...because each
time an issue is sent out a number of those up for
renewal will for some reason or other not renew.
Last Friday night I decided to use the telephone to
contact some of those who have recently joined the
rolls of the unCFDMed. Fourteen calls were actually
completed and here are the somewhat interesting
results.
=>
____________________________________________________
Seven of the fourteen did state that they planned to
renew soon. One interesting note here is that one
mentioned that "due to our going PC, he thought we
were to soon quit the CoCo". I certainly don't want
anyone jumping to that conclusion. Whether the new
PCFDM is a success or not, we are not leaving the
CoCo Community.
Of those who will probably not resubscribe, one had
taken an interest in OS9 and no longer had an
interest in CFDM (this was a long time Friend).
Three had gone to a PC (also long time Friends). One
said his wife had recently passed away and he was
not so interested any more. To this Friend we would
like to extend our heartfelt condolences!
=>
____________________________________________________
There were two others with which we left our message
with a family member since they were not at home.
I have stated before that it is very sad to go thru
our database of Friends and find names that are no
longer with us. A number of these Friends have
passed away. And there is a number who subscribed
for awhile and then went on to other things. I had
no idea how tough it would be to realize that we
would not always be in contact.
But the effort goes on. CFDM and it's group of
Friends are not really here to be a convenience to
those who are sometimes in need of our services. We
are a group of Friends dedicated to keeping the CoCo
alive and to share our love of our hobby! =*

Dear Rick,
I have been intending to write and thank you and
Donna for your hospitality at the picnic, really
enjoyed it and seeing the home of CFDM. About a week
after we left your home I developed a staff
infection in my right ear and had to cut our trip
short and go home to the Doctor. I believe in the
last two months I've taken enough antibiotics to
kill all of the germs within a half mile of my house
and I'm still taking them.
Enclosed is my check for $22 for a copy of the

NEITHER RAIN, SNOW, NOR BROKEN.. Dear Everybody, Sept. 27, 1995
Yesterday I fell in the bath and broke my right
upper arm. I was lucky in a way because the doctor
had just walked in to see my wife. It is most
embarrassing and undignified laying on the cold tile
floor in your skinny-dipper suit, but the dos soon
had me wrapped up and warm until the ambulance
arrived..
I spent several hours at the hospital and there was
a snafu because the paramedic reported that the
break was in my shoulder so that the wrong part of
my arm was x-rayed. Three more x-rays later, they
found the spot: a good break right through.
=>
____________________________________________________
1 October:
At first I had a very heavy plaster cast the full
length of my arm but then I had a light one fitted
by the "Gipsmeester" (the plaster master) who seems
to be a very important functionary in Dutch and
German hospitals. This one has straps and I can
tighten or loosen it to suit myself if it becomes
too uncomfortable...
I have to go into hospital on 5 Oct. and they will
operate to fix the break with metal pins. Everybody
tells me that's the way to go. I have to remain in
hospital for several days thereafter and, I hope, I
will not need a plaster cast when I leave.

THANKS FOR ZORK III !!! Hi Rick,
I wanted to thank you for putting my letter in

good news. Thanks again.

Template from Bonus #1 or #10? Hey, Rick, every time I backup a copy from the CFDM
template on Bonus Disk #10, I always get the red
border error when I run it. Conversely, every time I
use the CFDM template from Bonus Disk #1, it always
runs properly. This I can not figure out...........
-----
RICK: I don't know the answer either Ray. Maybe a
bad disk or maybe a timing problem?! These things
are strange. I sometimes recieve "funny" disks
which just don't act right. Sometimes copying from
these submission disks makes entries on the master
disk that sometimes do not load correctly, i.e.
offsets of the type or the little box after the
author's name. Mysterious...mysterious..mysterious!

NAME? <g> HYMNE by Vangelis Hint on PCLEAR0 MAEYESME WEATHER |
| Back to top |
HYMNE by Vangelis Vangelis, born Evangelos Papathanassiou (his first name translates "angel that brings good news") was a child prodigy composing at the age of four and giving recitals at the age of six, with no formal musical training. By the early sixties he was a teen-aged Greek superstar and keyboard whiz. Since then his career has included composing for films, Greek theater and British ballet. In 1982 he won an Oscar for Best Original Score for the film "Chariots Of Fire." "Hymne" is featured on his Polygram album titled "Opera Sauvage," and is used as the back- ground theme for the Gallo Wines television commer- cials. This description was copied from the 1987 copy of Sheet-music Magazine, as well as the score. I hope all of you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed transcribing it! =* |
Hint on PCLEAR0 I have often seen advice on doing a PCLEAR0
in order to provide space for a big program. The
advice is always this: type POKE25,14:POKE3584,0:
NEW. It works o.k., but you have to do it each time
you want to load the program. Quite by accident I
discovered that you can use RUN"FILENAME instead of
NEW. So then I made a little loader program, which I
gave a one-letter name to save time: R.BAS
The program goes like this:
0 REM - LOADER FOR BIGPROGM
5 POKE25,14:POKE3584,0:RUN"BIGPROGM
That's it. Just RUN "R and you get a PCLEAR0
and your big program loads and runs. Of course, it
does take a little more disk space, but I think it's
well worth it. Later, I realized that you could =>
____________________________________________________
add other things to the loader program so you could
leave them out of your big program, like a title
screen and palettes. I've used this approach for my
Typaline program as well as for George Quellhorst's
excellent MUSIC3+ program, both of which require a
PCLEAR0 to run. =*
|
MAEYESME This music may date me a little but thought you may
enjoy it. Just RUN "MAEYESME" and sit back and
reminisce.

WEATHER We have been hearing lately about the terrific weather conditions all over the world, including the United States. One weather condition that scares me greatly is a hurricane, since I once lived in Tampa and Bradenton, Florida. I was blessed that I did not have to go through such an ordeal as my grandmother had to endure in Miami, I believe in 1927. Because I like to make up little programs in BASIC, I thought perhaps a TV station might run something like this one to warn people about a hurricane approaching the shores of the southeast coast of the United States. To everyone out in CoColand, have a good fall and winter and send Rick a bunch of goodies for CFDM. HJM 09-11-95 =* |
* FANTASY PUZZLE *
JAMES MILLS has been kind enough to send me a
DISK FULL of GREAT PICTURES -- so NATURALLY I have
to make every attempt to convert them into PUZZLES!!
Using RICK'S new PALEDIT Program I was able to move
a few Palettes and combine a few Colors -- hopefully
NOT ruining the Artists work in so doing.
JIM told me that he had submitted 'SILLISTR' to
CFDM as a digitized picture from the Book entitiled
MASTERPIECES OF FANTASY ART. I don't know how JIM
can do such a magnificient job in digitizing -- need
an ARTICLE by JIM on his techniques!?
It sure makes a TOUGH PUZZLE to piece together
-- a light background with a light flashing cursor!
HOPE YOU ENJOY IT!

COCO BOMBER - It's Back! Here is the revised and update version of CoCo
Bomber, last featured in Issue 17 as B1-C Bomber!
Although the general game play is the same (you are
in control of a new fighter over Iraq with a mission
to destroy a primary target, using your missiles and
bomb, without getting yourself killed in the process
and returning to base) the look is very different.
While at the First Annual Picnic at Rick's, I wrote
some high speed scroll routines to just scroll parts
of the 80 column window, while leaving the rest of
it intact. Then I went through B1-C and made some
changes to the way it works. On your screen, you
always see FOUR windows. At the top is your status.
It is updated as necessary. Next to that is the ->
____________________________________________________
search window. It automatically displays any target
within 40 km. Targets that are within missile range
are in green, with the letters "Ph" (for Phoenix)
after them. Targets in bomb range have the letters
"Bo" after them. You can easily see what is in
range, and how close you are! Below that is the
tactical window which tells you what the enemy
missiles are doing, and to the left, is your
computer window which tells you locations of things,
what your missiles are doing, and other useful stuff
that you need.
You can always press H for a short Help screen.
New Features: Enemy missiles can cause damage to you
allowing you to keep fighting, rather than instant
death!
A Map screen. Press M and watch ->
____________________________________________________
where you are, and where everything else is! Blue
boxes are enemy missile ranges, the white circle is
your missile range. Press M again to return.
I have also added a few sound effects here and there
to jazz it up a bit.
HINTS: To land on the USS Kitty Hawk, you must fly
to within 1 km of it, and you will automatically
land.
If missiles are approaching you, use the E
key to jam them. E is for ElectronicCounterMeasures
and you may have to repeatly press it. They don't
always work!
Autopilot ten-tuples your actual speed. Use
it to get places faster! It will deactivate if you
are attacked, or if you change course. -*

DMP105A REVISITED YET AGAIN. I finally decided to take the time to write the
added code required to give my "DMP105A" program the
ability to dump the entire screen to the printer.
If you recall from the previous two articles, the
program would only dump the first 189 lines of the
PMODE screen to a Tandy code compatible printer. It
is now capable of dumping the entire 192 line screen
to the printer. The new version is: "DMP105A1".
To use the program, load a PMODE screen into the
computer and then RUN "DMP105A1". You will be
offered the usual choice of a photo-positive or a
photo-negative screen dump. After making your
selection, the screen will be dumped to the printer.
The program is a BASIC program with the M/L code =>
____________________________________________________
appended to it via end-packing. The assembly code
is included as: "DMP105A1.ASM". You may examine it
and compare it to the original if desired.
I hope that this modification is useful. Any
comments are welcomed.

Enhanced Amort Program I found the AMORT program submitted by Robert
Bruhl in issue #44 to be very accurate, and it
delivers a very nice print out. I have enhanced it
to give verification on the screen before printing,
along with the option to start over.
To accomplish this make the following changes
1. Change line 50 to 250. Insert <CLS:> at the
beginning of the line
2. Add line 260 PRINT"set baud rate to 2400"
* Use 1 setting higher than line 30 calls for
because CPU is set to high speed mode.
=>
____________________________________________________
3. Add line 270 PRINT"Press any key to begin
printing":EXEC 44539
4. Delete line 480
5. Delete RETURN in line 580. Change to- GOTO 1590
6. At the end of line 1150 change the first GOSUB
to 250 and delete to second one (300)
7. In line 1570 change to- GOSUB 1100
8. Change line 1580 to a comment line
'Print Out Monthly Amortization
9. Add line 2025- GOTO 1150 =>
____________________________________________________
10. If you change the baud rate in line 30, you
should change the last line (2040) accordingly.
11. If you want continious printing without page
spacing comment out lines 1840 and 1900
These changes will make a GOOD program GREAT !!

NIBSHOW - Better than ever If you run NIBSHOW this month to view the files on the program side of the disk, you should notice a difference right away! It is a new version of the program that works in every way like the old one, but has some new features that you will appreciate. Users have written to me with ideas and I have incorporated them! Firstly, NIBSHOW is a smaller program. If I can write a smaller program that does more, that is a good sign that I am improving! Secondly, NIBSHOW has all the same commands as other versions. In brief: D)directory C)change drive X)exit S)slide show Space)load Arrows)move B)border color H)hscreen mode T)comments Thirdly, NIBSHOW supports comments, color cycling and fractal effects, just like before. -> ____________________________________________________ But there are some new commands: P) show the palettes for the most recently loaded picture. Real handy for converting NIBs to CM3 files using TRANSLAT. You can jot down the values! ENTER) will also load a picture file BUT THE BEST NEWS: NIBSHOW will also load and display SQZ files. SQZ files (Squeeze) are the pictures on the magazine side of CFDM. Usually you view them while in the magazine. They are the <g> files. Well, you can copy them off the magazine side onto a disk, and use NIBSHOW to view them along with NIBs. You can slide show them all together! -> ____________________________________________________ Kudos to the many users of NIBSHOW who wrote and suggested changes! Suggestions I received were: -Using ENTER to view pictures -Loading SQZ files as well -Showing palettes of pictures -Automatic uppercase for ADOS users I am happy to say ALL these have been added to NIBSHOW. To run NIBSHOW, you'll need these files. NIBSHOW.BAS - the main program NIBLOADR.BIN - the NIB loader program SQZLOADR.BIN - the SQZ loader program -* |
Poker Solitaire While I was writing Poker Solitaire, I had my
dear, departed mother very much in mind. You see,
she invented the game some forty years ago for our
entertainment, hers and mine.
You need not know how to play Poker to play Poker
Solitaire (filename POKERSOL). However, you must
know each of 9 different Poker hands. Each hand is
composed of 5 cards. The hands are as follows:
1. A Pair: only 2 of the 5 cards have the same value
two 2s, two 3s, ... , two 10s, two Jacks,
two Queens, two Kings, or two Aces
2. Two Pairs: 2 different pairs & a 5th card that
matches no other in value
3. Three of a Kind: 3 cards that match in value &
2 that do not
=>
____________________________________________________
4. Straight: a sequence of 5 cards in various suits.
the highest straight is 10, J, Q, K, A
& the lowest is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
5. Flush: all 5 cards in the same suit but not in
sequence
6. Full House: three of a kind and a pair
7. Four of a Kind: 4 cards that match in value & 1
that does not
8. Straight Flush: all 5 cards in the same suit & in
sequence
9. Royal Flush: 10, J, Q, K, A of any suit
A listing of the 9 hands with associated values
is displayed for your convenience on the Poker
Solitaire screen. Also on the screen is a 5x5 grid
of slots on which to play cards from the Deck. The
purpose of the game is to play cards to the grid =>

in such a way as to form the best possible hands in
the 5 rows - A, B, C, D, & E - and in the 5 columns
- 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5.
Simple key commands are used to move each card.
For instance, to move the current face up Deck card
to the grid slot of row B and column 3, merely press
the key B followed by the key 3 or vice versa. If
you press an unintended key for your 1st designation
of a row or column, you may negate the designation
by pressing a key other than A, B, C, D, E, 1, 2, 3,
4, or 5. Any time such a key is pressed you will
hear a beep & the play will be disallowed.
It is worth noting that the cards in a straight
need not appear sequentially in the grid. For
instance, the straight 7, 8, 9, 10, J might appear
in column 4 as 10 in A4, 9 in B4, 7 in C4, =*

Poker Solitaire (continued) J in D4, & 8 in E4.
During a game you will have a minimum of 25 plays
& a maximum of 30 plays. You are allowed a maximum
of 5 plays in which a Deck card is played to an
already occupied card slot. Such plays are made to
improve a hand or to make an anticipated improve-
ment. 10 points will be subtracted from your score
for each play that covers a slot card.
At the bottom of the Poker Solitaire screen is a
menu to remind you of the keys that can be used to
make the plays. The menu shows one additional key,
Q, which is used to Quit by pressing it twice in
succession.
After you make the final play of the game, wait a
couple of seconds for your score to be calculated &
to appear on the screen. Then, if you wish, =>
____________________________________________________
study the scoring break down and finally press Q
twice to Quit.
Quitting will cause a new menu screen to come to
view. This menu offers 3 options - Shuffle (play
another game of Poker Solitaire), Replay (play the
same game again to try to improve your score) and
Quit.
A Poker Solitaire score of over 200 is very good.
Scoring over 300 is rare. Getting a score in the
400s is a great rarity and is almost always the
result of replaying a game. My best score was 475 &
included two of the elusive Royal Flushes. I would
be pleased to hear from any of you who do better.

UTILITY V-TERM REVIEW |
DISK UTILITY Disk Utility was written by Jeff Francis in 1984
for the CoCo 1,2 and was marketed by Spectrum Pro-
ducts. There was next an upgraded version for the
CoCo 3, which is the one I'll be discussing.
This one short ML program does almost anything you
would want to do with your disks. It is probably my
most-used utility. When loaded, a one-page menu
shows the options, which are selected by keying in
the initial letter. The options are:
Alphabetize Dir -- puts the programs in alpha-
betical order in the directory.
Examine File Data -- scans the program on the
screen (can be paused with the Space Bar).
Format (DSKINI) -- formats the disk.
Granule Table -- shows the Granule Allocation
Table. =>
____________________________________________________
Move Around Dir -- any program can be moved to
any place in the directory.
Super Utilities -- contains Super Copy (copies
any or all programs), Super Kill (kills any
or all programs), and Super Info (lists all
information about all files on the disk).
Backup -- makes a backup to the selected drive.
Copy -- copies the designated program (the disk
directory is shown) to the selected drive.
Drive -- selects any drive (0-4). BREAK to list
files on the disk in that drive.
Info -- lists Filename, Filetype, Fileform,
Granules, Granule Map, and File Size.
Kill -- kills the designated program.
Load -- loads the designated program (BAS or
BIN). =>
____________________________________________________
Quit -- exits the program.
Rename -- the designated program can be given a
new name.
Break -- same as the BREAK key.
Vrfy: ON/OFF -- turns the verify function on or
off when copying programs or making backups.
This program is extremely versatile and is bug-
free. The only minor problem I have found is that
files other than /BAS and /BIN cannot be renamed.
But, this is easily done outside the program in the
CoCo's command mode (e.g., RENAME PICTURE/MAX:0 TO
PICTURE/CM3:0).
You don't have to look for separate utilities to
manipulate your files on a disk -- This one does it
all!

V-TERM REVIEW I have had good results using V-TERM on my Coco3
using a serial cable from my serial port to the
modem at a 2400 baud rate. Downloads have been
consistently good on local bbs' and Delphi. Uploads
also work well as well as file transfers from
computer to computer using a null modem. I try to
use the 512k mem for all downloads. Its quite fast
this way. In order to use it just enter LOADM "VT"
and it will exec. Then press ALT P (parameter), then
press ALT R (rs232), then press ALT B (baud) set it,
then set Word. Next set STOP, PARITY, DUPLEX.
Finally the I/O device to SERIAL PORT. Now press
ALT X to exit. To enter a phone number press ALT A,
now press ALT M (modemstring) and type in the number
as: ATDT 343 3663. To dial this number press ALT D
(dial) and press Enter, then press Enter again. =>
____________________________________________________
The modem should then dial. There is a conference
line you can also use. After a quick start you can
then go back and set many different setups that
would include disk, printer, memory, modem protocol,
receive and transfer storage to memory or disk. You
can also set the terminal to capture to memory or
print. You can also set macro keys for logging on
a bbs, or :-) (faces) etc. All your setting can then
be saved to a default file. Your setup can always be
revised to suit the equipment i.e. using an RS232
Pak. Its a topnotch terminal program for your Coco
having a menu display that is easy to use, good
legible text, colors are nice, file transfers
utilizing either x or y modem, basic, binary and
ASCII, 15 entry autodialer, 10 program macro keys,
compatible with Hyper I/O,RGBDOS and DISTO Super =>

Note: An RS232 Pak is not needed. Use the bitbanger

EMULATOR VIDEO REQUIREMENTS (From a Delphi communication...)
..a few issues back someone write in to CFDM saying
that the CoCo emulator worked on EGA *only* and not
VGA or SuperVGA. That is incorrect. The emulator
works on EGA or later video boards, as they all
support backward compatibility with EGA. If that
person is experiencing problems, it was either
because of something unique to their specific brand
of video board, or more likely totally unrelated to
the video board and instead to do with a driver
incompatibility.

Need a new cable for my CM-8 After purchacing a CM-8 monitor from Terry Laraway,
I started to extend the short cable. But as usual, I
labelled the pinout poorly. Now I need to get a new
cable so I can do it correctly. Can any Friend out
there help me?

PARALLEL PRINTER PORT I installed the parallel printer port described by
Tony DiStefano in the November and December 1987
issues of RAINBOW magazine.
I can utilize the port with OS-9. How can I get
TELEWRITER and SIMPLY BETTER to send output to the
port?

PIRACY? Back in January I bought some picture disks that
were advertised on CFDM. More recently (MARCH) I was
fortunate enough to have a winning bid in the CFDM
Phone Fest. Quite a lot of the picture files which I
bought in January were on the T&D disks which I got
through the Phone Fest.
Somehow I was of the opinion that the pics I bought
in January were originals. Now I see that they were
copied from T&D. The T&D disks are clearly marked
PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE. Does this make it okay to
copy and sell these items? Does a code of conduct
come in here somewhere?
I seriously do not know the answer. Are the public
domain items copyright protected? =>
____________________________________________________
I recently submitted a program to CFDM which was
written by another person 7 years ago. It was not
copyright protected, but I considered it good
conduct to contact the writer and get a letter of
permission before I sent it in. Perhaps this is
what the person did whom I bought my pics from. I do
not know.
The bottom line is, What is proper and legal?
WOLFIE

Rick: While holding your question open for others
to respond to, I will tell you my opinion. Share
ware has different forms, but one can presume =>
____________________________________________________
that it is okay to share it with others as long as
one is not trying to make a profit. In other words
you can give copies or charge a reasonable amount
to cover disk, mailer, postage, and even a small
amount for your trouble in producing the item.
I really do agree with your practice of getting the
author's permission before submitting material for
publication (such as in CFDM or PCFDM). I remember
a graphic-cartoon contest ran in Rainbow some time
ago where the winning entry (and maybe there was
more than one) which was later disqualified. It
seems the entry and caption was simply the entrant's
redrawing the original. I believe the original was
a Garry Larson "From the Light Side" cartoon. Let's
be careful not to practice this practice! =*

TO:_V_NEUFELDT:IS_40_TRK_BETTER? R.E.:_"IS 40 TRACK BETTER?" _ VIC NEUFELDT,
FROM COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE (CFDM) #38.
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
Vic, 40 tracks is generally considered better due to
the fact that it will give you an additional ten
granules of storage space, per diskette side. The 40
track program does not use the cassette port, rather
it patches Disk BASIC in RAM. The CoCo 3 normally
operates from RAM, so this will generally not be a
problem. Some software uses it's own disk operating
software, thereby bypassing Disk BASIC. This type of
software may or may not function with the 40 track
RAM patches. Another problem is that some software
operates in the ROM mode. This will disable any
patches that were made to the RAM copy of Disk
BASIC, but may or may not function with a 40 track=>
____________________________________________________
Disk BASIC ROM/EPROM. Some examples of problem
software would be: The VIP series, ULTIMATERM, CoCo
MAX ]I[, MAX 10 and Disk EDTASM+. All of this
software should still function with a 40 track Disk
BASIC ROM, but probably will not with the RAM patch.
However, most of it will still only access the first
35 tracks on the disk. The exception in the above
list is the one you asked about, CoCo MAX ]I[. It
alone, of the above mentioned software, can access
40 tracks with a 40 track ROM (it will disable the
RAM patches that you are using, thus only accessing
35 tracks). With a 40 track ROM, CM3 can read and
write to the full 40 tracks on the disk. It will not
, however, display the last 10 granules as being
free. That is, when CM3 shows only 1 free granule,
there will actually be 11 free granules that it =>
____________________________________________________
can access (via a 40 track ROM). I hope that this
is of some use to you. I routinely use a 40 track
set-up and if you decide to go this route, it is
suggested that you purchase a 40 track ROM for your
disk controller. I make this suggestion because if
you forget to run your 40 track RAM patch program
before using a 40 track diskette, you risk
catastrophic results - THE LOSS OF VALUABLE DATA TO
THE DREADED FS? ERROR!

To:R.L., V.C. and R.C.:YAHTZEE3. To : Rick Lewis, Vince Cardillo and Rick Cooper.
R.e.: "YAHTZEE3.BAS" and T & D Software; CFDM #44.
The issue disks that Vince has are NOT Public
Domain. They were, in fact, a subscription magazine,
much the same as CFDM is a subscription magazine.
They are all copyrighted by T & D Software. They may
also be considered 'orphanware', but it is NOT legal
to distribute 'orphanware', unless it has been
released to the public via the copyright owner.
To my knowledge, Tom Dykema (T & D) has made no such
public release of his software.
****
Also, I do not think that the YAHTZEE3 that is
contained on the T & D Subscription Disk #71 is the
actual program that Rick Lewis is looking for.=>
____________________________________________________
The program that is on that diskette was written by:
Bill Bernico (I think), and is a one-player game.
T & D also offered a Public Domain library, separate
from their monthly disks. On one of their Public
Domain GAME diskettes, I don't recall which one,
there was another version of YAHTZEE3 that supported
up to FOUR players. I believe that this is probably
the one that Rick Lewis is looking for. IT IS PUBLIC
DOMAIN property!
****
Final Note: In a LONG AGO issue of CFDM, I made a
statement that I now know to be at fault. I stated
that, 'if a program author leaves no way of getting
in touch with him/her, then there was no legal
recourse against anyone that distributed the
software.' This was in error, and based upon an =>
____________________________________________________
OLD article that I had read, I think in The Rainbow.
However, congress updated the copyright laws in
regards to computer software. This revision occurred
in 1989. The complete information regarding the
revised laws appears in an article in the April 1989
issue of The Rainbow. IT NEEDS TO BE READ BY ALL!
In essence, it is illegal to distribute 'orphanware'
in any way, shape, or form, without the prior
consent (preferably written) of the copyright
holder. 'Orphanware' is any software that once sold
in some commercial fashion, but is now quite
unavailable. I hope that this information is useful.
I wanted to send it in, because notices such as an
offer for copyrighted software could cause the
premature demise of our beloved CFDM. - R.A.T. -
LONG LIVE CFDM (and, what the heck - PCFDM)!!! =*

Wanted: Fractal Suggestions First, thank you to EVERYONE who wrote and suggested
additions to NIBSHOW. I have incorporated all of
them into a better program.
Now I am working on a new Fractal program that is
faster. So far, I have added
-640 x 192 modes in four colors
-160 x 96 modes in 16 colors (faster)
-Random color sets (not just R,G, and B)
I do not have algorithms for other fractal types
other than Mandel and Julia. If you have them, I
would appreciate seeing them, otherwise I will just
feature Mandel and Julia fractals.
My address follows. A simple postcard with a ->
