"ABOUT CFDM" COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with that format exclusively. A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong. By providing a unique means of communication, maybe old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our knowledge and experiences! The success of this effort depends on each one who becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/ her two cents in the form of articles, programs, opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the manual with your starter kit for details on how to submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =* |

Early Spring Early springtime is a beautiful time of year.
In Pennsylvania, along the Susquehanna River, it
is especially beautiful. This a picture from the
Susquehanna River valley area and as you can see
the leaves are not yet out, but the ground
greenery is underway. I hope you enjoy the
picture and hope this brings spring and the
renewness of life to you!

A 68B09E Source A few days ago, I got a JDR Microdevices electronic

found on page 9, 68B09Es were still for sale at

A Different Kind of Contest
On the program side of this disk you'll find a NIB
picture by Ray. Use NIBSHOW2 to view it. The
balloon caption is empty because that is the theme -
fill in the caption. This contest should get plenty
of entries because almost all of the work is already
done for you. All you need to do is to come up with
a clean, humorous saying that will make the Friends
smile. You are encouraged to "enter as often as you
like". This will let the Friends really express
themselves.
I (Rick) will write a display program which will put
your caption in the balloon. The deadline for your
entry(s) is July 15th. A winner will be chosen at
random and will receive a package of 10 flippies.

COMING TO RICK'S PICNIC!!??
Ben Walker sent three Great graphics which gave some
nifty ideas about coming to Rick's Picnic (July 15th
1995 in Liberty, KY). When placed thru the SQZ
process, they were too big to get all of them in the
issue...so...I changed the started procedure in "C"
and placed these pics, in NIB format, right after
the startup screen. If you bypassed the cover screen
please go back and check out Ben's pics!
By the way the time is drawing near for the picnic
and it looks like we're going to have a good crowd.
We'll look forward to seeing each of you here in
Liberty!!

MOST POPULAR SECTIONS? I've often wondered which of the sections of CFDM
was really your favorite. I know that our interests
vary...some like the graphics, some don't. Some like
the programs, some don't. But really...what do you
like (and dislike) about CFDM? If you will, please
use the SYSOPS MENU (Press F1 and choose the print
option) to print out this entry. Then mark your
choices with the numbers 1 through 12 (1 being your
favorite). If you don't really care for some part
of CFDM or if you wish to make a comment, then use
the comment section. I'll report on this survey as
soon as possible. CFDM is a participatory project..
PLEASE PARTICIPATE!! Send your survey to CFDM.

UPGRADING THE CHO BORDERS!! Thanks for all your help in advertising my software.
The response from the Hardcopy ad has been great! I
appreciate all your help. I wish I had placed an ad
for the CoCo Registry, but I was really busy and it
slipped my mind...but I appreciate your offer. You
may want to know that MAX-10 Border Disk I has been
made easier to use thanks to Jim Bennett. It also
now includes 10 borders instead of 8. I plan on
sending free upgrades to all previous buyers in
April. Despite my slow progress, I am still
enthusiastic for future products and plan to release
at least one new product in June.
Thanks for everything!!!

UNBELIEVABLE OFFER #1 Just before beginning CFDM, I decided to gather all
the software packages I had written into one package
and offer it at an Unbelievable price. This was the
first of the Unbelievable offers. As I look back at
this package, I still believe it is a fantastic
bargain for anyone who has a CoCo 3 and enjoys using
databases, games, graphics, and educational
software. Here's what you get for only $33 + $2 s/h:
- CC3FLAGS..The best RISK play-alike for the CoCo 3.
I had always wanted to write this program, but
until the CoCo 3 came along there was not enough
memory and the graphics weren't sufficient.
- VOCAB..You can actually play Scrabble against your
friends or against CoCo opponents. This is =>
____________________________________________________
the best Scrabble play-alike I've seen on the
CoCo (all modesty aside). CoCo is lightning
fast at finding his word from his limited but
capable word list.
- RAINBOW INDEXES..An eleven year database of the
programs, articles, and reviews from Rainbow.
- NIB COMPRESSOR..It took me about 3 years to find
this method of graphics compression.
- GALLERY MAKER..You can make a disk gallery of your
favorite NIB pictures with GM. It's neat!
- RICK'S COCO GALLERY..A sample gallery of my pics
created with GALLERY MAKER. =>
____________________________________________________
- PUZZLES..Well you've seen these many times in CFDM
and now you get the program and instructions.
- TETRA..My version of Tetris. Not so fancy..just
fun...and addicting.
- MASTER DIRECTORY 3..Organize your disks with this
easy to use database. Put your disk in the drive
and MD3 reads the dir and adds it to the base.
Fast search routine. Similar to CoCo Registry.
- STEVE'S PICS..Four disk sides of digitized pics by
Steve Ricketts. (NIB format.)
- PROGRAMS FOR FRIENDS..Four great programs..WACKO,
SMARTY THE PIG, EUROPE, and CANADA. =*

Tutorial Series 3.1 GrafExpress Tutorial Series 3.2 JUST "TRAF" IT! TW-128 & 40 track drives |
| Back to top |
GrafExpress Tutorial Series 03 To use this months demo (GE03.BAS) you must use the
TOOLDEMO.BIN program (see programs of the month).
Simply LOADM"TOOLDEMO" and select (U)n-Arcive. Next
chose the drive#. Highlight the file GEDEMO03.ARC
with the spacebar and press enter. This will give
you a directory of the arcived file. Select ALL by
pressing "A" and then the drive where the unarcived
files will go. Use a new disk! You will need 22
grans for the unarcived files. Next copy the file
GE16.BIN onto this disk (found in issue#33) and RUN
GE03.BAS.
This months topic is GE (GrafExpress) picture com-
mands. First some background info. GE pictures
come in three varieties. 1) Regular picture- is any
graphic picture to a maximum of 100x100 pixels. =>
____________________________________________________
2) Transcolor picture: same as #1 but one color can
be chosen as a transparent color. This means that
any pixels set with this color will not be visible
when this picture is placed on the screen. Only
this color will be transparent. Maximum size is
8000 pixels. Example: 100x80 pixels. 3) Transparent
picture: this is a picture with nothing visible.
This is not really a graphic but GE refers to this
type as a picture. The purpose is for defining an
area to be used in collision checking.
The demo for this month uses a standard picture type
measuring 24x24 pixels. These pictures were created
using PIC.MKR which comes with the GE package. GE
pictures can also be saved on disk by using the
IMPORT program (in GE package) which will save =>
____________________________________________________
a GE picture from a High Res picture already in mem-
ory. One more way a GE picture can be saved to disk
is directly through GE, defining an area then saving
it.
GE uses the CoCo's LORES graphics memory to load and
save pictures to and from disk. This is why GE
pictures are limited in size. This area in memory
is reserved by using the PCLEAR6 command (line 30 in
demo). If your program does not load or save pic's
then use PCLEAR1. This all sounds very limiting,
but full size screens can be loaded in 100x100 pixel
sections. A few precautions when loading pictures
from disk: Always use the GE "SLOW" command first
to slow down the CPU (line 160).
* continued in Part II * =*
|
GrafExpress Tutorial Series 03 One more precaution: Whenever using LOADM or SAVEM
the EXEC address will change so use EXEC GE to call
the GrafExpress the next time (the varible GE is =
2000 in line 70 of the demo).
The following is an example of loading GE pictures:
100 C$="SLOW":EXEC:'Slows CPU for disk access
110 LOADM"TEST.PIC":'Loads picture into LORES memory
120 C$="FAST":EXEC GE:'Puts CPU into double speed
130 C$="LOADPIC1":EXEC:'Loads picture into GE memory
and defines picture as picture #1
140 C$="PIC1>10,20":EXEC:'Places picture at coordin-
ates 10,20 on the work screen
Note: Since the picture is now in memory it can be
placed elsewhere at any time. If the picture =>
____________________________________________________
loaded from disk will not be required at a later
time in your program, use the same picture# to con-
serve memory.
You may well want to copy all GrafExpress files from
this tutorial series to one disk. That way all
files will be readily accessable at any time.

JUST "TRAF" IT! My staff at school are still in a state of shock! One teacher said, "It will never last". While I was out of the office the other day, she wrote a note and left it on my desk. It read: Dear Principal, Welcome to Douglas Elementary. I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Billy Sheene. I teach 2nd and 3rd grade. I noticed that your desk is so neat and clean, so I knew we had a new principal! Well here's what happened. My office at school was probably like those you've seen before (you may have one just like it). Papers and books are always piled so high that you can't see anyone sitting on => ____________________________________________________ the other side. In my case the rest of the office is a reflection of the desk. The bulletin board is cluttered, the file cabinets laden with material, and the bookcases are cluttered. (Some one even made the claim that, "I work better this way and I know where everything is!" But then I learned about the TRAF system. I was also informed that one must have a neat work space to be at top efficiency. The letters TRAF stand for Toss, Refer, take Action, and File. These are the four steps to organize a work space (or a living room, car, yard, etc.). About two weeks ago I had a local carpenter build me a new bookshelf for my office. I decided it was time to put the TRAF system to work. The large binders that hid me from view were => ____________________________________________________ placed in the new bookshelf, the PA system now sits on the top of the bookshelf and the old "plank on two metal arms" is gone. All paperwork and books were systematically sifted (using TRAF) and the appropriate action was taken. The old bookshelf was emptied and the contents neatly reshelved. I also took time to TRAF the bulletin board and the teacher mailboxes were TRAFed too. The file cabinets were unloaded with the junk which had accumulated. The desk and computer were dusted and....viola..the new TRAFed office of Rick Cooper. It's been two weeks and it still looks GREAT. My teachers can't believe it! And it feels great too! Now Donna, Kristin, Kasey, Kayla, and I are putting the TRAF system to work at home. It works! Give it a try and let me know how it works for you. =* |
TW-128 & 40 track drives If you have the word processor TW-128 and are using
Radio Shack Dos 2.1 and would like to have TW-128
use all 40 tracks of your drives, there is an easy
patch for this.
You will need the following:
BLANK disk
TW-128
Madmikes Disk Basic Patch 2.2 from issue
#9 of CFDM (Filename "!.BAS")
First, LOAD and RUN !.BAS. Next, DSKINI a blank
disk. This disk will be initialized for 40 Tracks
thanks to Madmike.
Next, copy !.BAS and all necessary files for ==>
____________________________________________________
TW-128 onto the new disk.
Now, before RUNning TW-128, RUN !.BAS to get 40
tracks and 6ms steprate. Now you can run TW-128.
You will now have access to all 40 tracks along with
a faster step rate.
One word of caution though. You can read from a 35
track disk, but be very careful writing to a 35
track disk. If the file is not increased in size
and you are saving the file under the same name and
there is plenty of free space on the 35 track disk,
you might not have problems.
It is always best to save the new files to a disk
that has been initilized for 40 tracks. ==>
____________________________________________________
I have been using this setup for 18 months now with
no problems. I am using a 512K CoCo3, FD-502 drives
running RS DOS 2.1.

ROOSTERS AT HOME
One day last spring two roosters appeared at our

did find out where they came from, but they were
a lot of fun to have around. We finely gave them
to one of our neighbors who had other farm
animals.

KRAMER UPDATE WE NEED YOUR FAMILY TREE ENTRY! |
| Back to top |
DALE KRAMER UPDATE It has been well over a year since my last contact
with you. I am writing concerning Dale Kramer. Last
month Dale's murderer pleaded guilty to a lesser
crime of "voluntary manslaughter", he was sentenced
to forty (40) years in prison. The actual punishment
for the manslaughter was 20 years but he was also
sentenced for theft, vehicle theft, and prison
escape. I work in the legal field in Florida and was
shocked at the leniency of the Georgia courts. For
instance, any sentence greater than twenty(20) years
(including 'life') has a first parole date set at
seven (7) years. Dale's murderer has over a year of
'time served' so his first parole board hearing will
come up in less than six years! This brings me to
the reason of this letter.
=>
____________________________________________________
If the Georgia parole board receives a substantial
amount of letters on behalf of this inmate his
chances for parole will be slim to none. I would
appreciate it if you would pass this information
along to the subscribers of the CoCo Friends Disk
Magazine. Dale's family was told to send in as many
letters as possible and to write repeatedly. The
letters should inform the board how the individual
knew Dale, how his death impacted them, and why they
feel that the inmate (Jimmy Lee Finch, Jr.) should
not be paroled.
If any subscriber of CFDM wishes to write, there is
some information I desire them to know: Jimmy Lee
Finch, Jr., at the time of his arrest, had an
outstanding warrant in connection with a murder =>
____________________________________________________
in Columbus, Georgia, in 1989. He now awaits trial
in Columbus which probably will take another year to
come to trial. Finch brutally murdered Dale by
repeatedly stabbing him and breaking an electric
guitar over his head. Finch knew Dale from work and
knew Dale would be cashing his check after work that
day. Finch also had a serious drug problem -- crack
cocaine -- and had already spent his check at a
"crackhouse". Finch had confessed his crime to his
girlfriend who was prepared to testify at trial.
Finch is serving a lesser sentence to a lesser crime
because he confessed and plea bargained.

FRACTALS & TREKKIE I have had so much fun with the last two issues that I don't know how to start. Stuart got me interested in animated Fractals and I had to review to find out how to "RENAME"..now I can't stop changing names in order to animate pictures. And I do mean pictures , since I have been animating a host of them. Now the "TREKKIE" has got me involved and I have been trying things with it that I have never even thought I would ever attempt. I have taken out the planets and stars and changed the color of the sky, so that I could write on it. I did the best I could do, but I know I will learn more as time goes by! know, but I'm running two on my system. I run 720K
for drive 0 and drive 1 for OS9II but that created a
problem with Rick's flippies. I now have four drives
two 3.5 and two 5.25. I've removed the shunts on one
3.5 and one 5.25 which designates the drive numbers
and ran wires to 2 double pole double throw switches
and I can now use either 720K or 36OK for drive 0 by
flipping two switches. The reason I ask is because
there are new 720K drives for sale and cheap. The
other day I walked into the local Radio Shack and
asked the lady if she had any 360K drives. She
looked at me and laughed (a lot of people do), and
said "360K drives? I haven't seen one in years." I
says "could you just check the back room?" I follows
her into the back to check things out. ==>
____________________________________________________
She didn't have any 360K drives but sitting on the
top shelf is a new external 720K drive. I says how
much for that 720K. She says 85$. I says, 85 dollars
them #?!$ things ain't worth over 20$!! You can buy
new bare 720K drives at computer shows for 20$! Well
I left that day empty handed but 3 days later I was
back window shopping. She recognizes me and says
what size drive was you looking for? I says 360K.
She says I ain't got 360K but I do have a 720K drive
for sale. I says how much? She says $20! I said I'll
take it. I left with a new 720K external drive in a
case. Can't beat that for a deal. Last year Radio
Shack was still selling 720K drives for their Tandy
1000, $109.99. The moral of the story is there are a
lot of 720K drives out there for sale that you don't
have to pay much for. If everyone reading this =>

would go to their local Radio Shack and check you
might be surprised at what you find. Won't hurt.
You might get lucky and stumble across some 360K
drives. I'm working on a deal for some used 360K
drives and may have a few available in the immediate
future.

Why not add this new idea? One of the more helpful features of "the RAINBOW"
was TIPS and HINTS, scattered throughout the
magazine. Why not add a 'TIPS & HINTS' feature to
ACTIVE COCO. This section of CFDM is never full like
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS or LETTERS TO THE EDITOR or
POTPOURRI. It would be sort of a collecting place
for the small, but needed things that we CoCo users
use to keep our beloved machine operational. I.E.:
----------------------TIP---------------------------
Whenever you are working hard on your CoCo and
you are called away, you may have no time to save
your work. Turning your monitor off and on will
eventuallly break your switch. Try CLS0:EXEC44539.
This blanks your screen to black and then waits
for a key to be pressed. This also acts like a
deterrant to other nosy individuals. =>

RICK: Good idea Ray...but we'll probably put the
hints and tips in POTPOURRI. Each section has a
maximum number of entires that it will hold. ACTIVE
COCO holds only six. Thanks for your tip and let's
have some others!

THIS ISSUE (FROM RICK) This issue of CFDM is a little different in that the
graphics normally found "inside" the magazine side,
have been placed between the cover picture and the
magazine. To see the three NIB pictures that promote
the Picnic, you must choose to see the cover picture
instead of CTRLing to the magazine. This became
necessary due to the size of these pictures. I had
to use NIB and NIB is not convenient to use "inside"
the magazine.
Things have been busy with school winding down, CFDM
to put together, and the new PCFDM project. Don't
worry it will get worse before it gets better!
It's amazing that three years after Rainbow's demise
that we still get new folks calling on CFDM! =>
____________________________________________________
Sometimes a caller is referred from TANDY, sometimes
they've been looking at an old Rainbow ad, and often
they are referred by our current Friends. After
nearly three and one half years, the CFDM database
holds over 650 names and addresses. Some are no
longer valid due to address changes, death, etc. but
our enrollment of about 200 seems to manage to hold
steady.
And now we're really looking forward to the Picnic!
It may be that your next issue will be several days
late. The reason is it's a Bonus Disk issue and I'd
like to get a lot of news from the Picnic on that
Bonus Disk. I hope you will feel that's worthwhile.
With folks like Jeff Vavasour, the CFDM editors, and
a number of our Friends available in one spot =>

there should be lots to report on. So the next time
you read CFDM, look forward to finding out what went
on at the Picnic!!

This Month's Scripture
According to my earnest expectation and my hope,
that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with
all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be
magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by
death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is
gain.

Dear Rick In my first submission done on my new twin disk
drive, I asked you to allow me to acknowledge pub-

help me in my trouble. Please add to that list Pete

I am glad I waited until I found a 240 volt 50

After so long restriction to a single drive I am
now trying to explore the possibilities available in
a twin drive (drives 0 and 1).
I guess most people get along with drive 0 for
most applications even if they have multiple drives
available. I have configured my CoCo Max 3, Max 10
and CoCo Graphic Designer Plus disks for twin drives
but, if only for the learning experience, I would
like to know if there are more possibilities in add-
ition to easy backups and copies.
QUESTION: I have tried copying "C" files from drive
0 to drive 1 in the SYSOPS menu but with only mixed
successes. I more often than not end up with a red
border when I try to read my save. Any suggestions?

RICK: Keiran, the only thing that comes to mind is
to make sure you have a CFDM formatted disk in drive
1. Of course you can't write or read CFDM entry-
type files from a standard RS Dos formated disk.
This may not be the problem of course. And it may
be hardware oriented, but I'm not an expert in that
area.
I've never really had that problem and as you know
the majority of entries in each issue are copied
from the disks I've been sent and to the master CFDM
disk using the SYSOPS MENU.

EMULATOR IS UP AND RUNNING!! Dear Rick,
GOOD NEWS at last. I got the emulator going just
before I received your letter. Apparently the ghost
of the old hercules monitor was still haunting me.
I read in the DOS manual that you could remove the
driver for monochrome and free memory. I ran
MEMMAKER and chose the custom setup and opted to use
monochrome memory for other uses. Then I decided to
try the emulator once more and WALLA! THE MENU
POPPED UP. Everything seems to run. I had some
problems trying to find out how to use TW128 since
the F1 is now F11 and F2 is F12 and some other
changes but I think it will be O.K.
I ran a program, STATEMENT, I wrote a long time =>
____________________________________________________
ago that simply formats my statements for business
and adds totals etc. Not that it is such a great
program, but I used it a lot and haven't found
anything that will do exactly what I want in MS DOS.
Just to see my program running in MSDOS on my PC was
a real thrill, worth the price of the emulator by
itself! I plan to express this to Jeff soon.
I don't know of any other group that has the support
that the CoCo has. I have tried to call some of the
other PC support and get the 20 minute runaround
through computer options and still got nowhere.
Thanks so much for your reply. I made a copy of the
disk and am returning it in case someone else needs
help. I notice some of the files are different =>

in length than the ones I got but since I am running
I will leave it alone unless I have trouble. If I do
I have the files to use.

WHAT A DILEMMA!!!! ...regarding "Rick's Picnic". I honestly have every
intention of attending the picnic. I have even
started checking out travel arrangements. But I do
have some bad news. It so happens that the CFDM
Picnic falls on exactly the same day as my Dad's
Family Reunion. We have two family reunions each
year, one for my Dad's side of the family, and one
for my Stepmom's. Last year, one of my sisters
missed a reunion for one reason or another, and that
did not stit will with the folks. So, last August,
my Stepmom gave us two dates that we should put on
our calendars a year in advance, and of course, one
would be the same day as your picnic. It is a rather
delicate situation. My brother kidded me about it,
saying the tile of "Black Sheep of the Family" would
now be transferred to me. I have not yet =>

mentioned anything to my Dad, but, I really do want
to go to your picnic. I have never been farther east
than Minnesota, and that was 14 years ago, and I
would love to see some of the east coast. I'm
planning on making a week of it, getting to Kentucky
somewhere in the middle of the week, getting a car,
and enjoying as many of the sights as I can. After
attending the picnic, maybe stick around the east
coast for another night or two for some more sight-
seeing, before flying back home. I'm getting excited
just thinking about it. I'll just have to make my
family understand.
Well, that's the latest from my corner of the west
coast. I hope to see you this summer, and, who
knows, moving to Kentucky may be in my future =>

DMP105 PRINTER RIBBON CARTRIDGE If you are one of us who extends his ribbon life by either re-inking or spraying with WD-40 and have not yet come upon the cartridges "Assembled In Mexico", beware. They are sealed, so to speak, and do not have the little slots which heretofore made it easy to pry them apart. Using a razor knife, with care and patience, you can still accomplish the trick, and cut through the seal line. I repeat "patience" for I didn't exercise same and broke one of the se- curing pegs; fortunately the others are holding down the fort! You will also notice that the internal mechanism has been re-arranged; take care that none of the spindles pop out. I have just recently in- stalled my first Mexican (curiosity made me open it up before ever used!) so I can not report what sort of ribbon mileage they instill south of the border!* |
Instructions for AMBUSH In Cosmic Ambush, which appeared in issue #37 of
CFDM, the rolling screen that you get when you start
the game is because the game is set to Australian
CoCo's which use 50 Hz electricty. The game is also
set to display on a CMP monitor.
To stop the rolling and prevent any possible damage
to your monitor, press the F1 key to toggle between
50Hz and60Hz.
To use the game with your RGB monitor, press F2 to
toggle between CMP and RGB displays.
If you downloaded the game from DELPHI, (Filename
CAMBUSH.ARC), there is a problem with the file that
caused TC31.BIN to stop unarchiving the files. ==>
____________________________________________________
I was finally able to unarchive the files using the
CCTOOL.BIN demo program that appeared in issue #4
of CFDM. You might also get an error while
unarchiving the files but the problem file will be
written to the disk.
After unarchiving, if you receive an error and the
game does not EXECute, load the file CAMBUSH.BAS.
List line #210. Now retype the line as shown and
then save the file as CAMBUSH.BAS. The program
should now load and EXECute properly.

LABELPRC REVISITED LABELPRC by George Quellhorst is a very nice and
well written program. I just started using it to
create labels for the Glenside CoCo Club's Disk of
the Month and I discovered a bug which I had to fix.
When I entered six lines of text for a label, the
program would not print the label. I found that the
number of lines of text in the label was not being
stored, so the program thought that there were zero
lines to print. The bug was in line 44, which said:
IFS=1 THENLL=T-1. S would never be 1, if a sixth
line was entered. I changed the line to read:
IFS=1 OR T=6 THENLL=T-1. The label will now print
because the number of lines of text (LL) will be
stored if there is a blank line or if line 6 has
been created. => 2
____________________________________________________
Another thing to remember; if you are using ADOS,
the printer baud poke in line 216 will have to be
changed. ADOS runs in high speed, so the baud rate
will have to be cut in half. If your printer is set
at 2400 baud, the poke will have to be changed for
1200 baud or else you will get graphics characters.

Brief History
-------------
Many versions of Star Trek have been kicking
around various college campuses since the late
sixties. I recall playing one at Carnegie-Mellon
Univ. in 1967 or 68, and a very different one at
Berkeley. However, these were a far cry from the one
written by Mike Mayfield of Centerline Engineering
and/or Custom Data. This was written for an HP2000C
and completed in October 1972. It became the =>

put in the HP contributed program library and onto a

In the summer of 1973, I converted the HP version
to BASIC-PLUS for DEC's RSTS-11 complier and added a
few bits and pieces while I was at it. Mary Cole at
DEC cotributed enormously to this task too. Later
that year, I published it under the name SPACWR
(Space War - in retrospect, an incorrect name) in my
book "101 BASIC Computer Games". It is difficult
today to find an interactive computer instillation
that does not have one of these versions of Star
Trek available.

BASKET (PMODE PIXEL EDITOR) The following entry and accompanying program were taken from Ray Smith's March 1995 issue of UP-2-DATE disk magazine. Permission granted by Ray Smith. ---------------------------------------------------- BASKET.BIN is a PMODE4 pixel editor that will run on the Dragon 32 or 64 (or CoCo 3) and is very easy to use. First, load a PMODE4 graphic file and then use the LOADM "BASKET" and EXEC commands to RUN this program. (RICK: I have included TESTBASK.BAS with a sample PMODE4 program for your convenience. To test BASKET.BIN just RUN TESTBASK.BAS and follow the instructions in this entry.) Wiggle the right hand joystick around to put the rectangular cursor over the area of the screen you wish to edit, and press the FIRE button. A magnified representation of the area for editing will appear together with the => ____________________________________________________ editing cursor in the form of a cross the reverse colour of the magnified pixel it has landed on. If, immediately after editing, you realize that you have made a mess of it, press the RESET button rather than the spacebar and the changes just performed will not be copied to the graphic screen. If you get a SN ERROR when you enter a valid instruction after running the BASKET, enter PCLEAR4 and all will be well. After an => ____________________________________________________ editing session you can SAVE the picture using the start, end and EXEC addresses of &HE00,&H25FF,0. The idea for this routine came from a part of Jim Bennett's enormous Super Comics+ program written for the CoCo. A month's effor to convert Mr. Bennett's machine code (it paid many calls to the CoCo ROM) proved singularly unsuccessful so that code had to be written from scratch which accounts for the file- name (BASKET, as in "BASKET CASE".) Mr. Bennett is agreeable to our adapting Super Comics+ for the Dragon and if progress continues at the present rate Ray and I may have it ready in two or three years time. ------------------ DAVE RILEY ---------------------- RICK: Thanks Dave and Ray! =* |

Gargantuan Grotto Adventure Ever since I purchased my plane ticket to Kentucky

My latest is G GROTTO.BAS, short for Gargantuan

Wumpus?) This mapping system has a unique feature.
Rather than saying, 'You are in room ##', I have
come up with a random room name generator. It's

SAVING DEALS-CURTISS' JPM JPM in issue 26 by H. Allen Curtiss is fascinating and quite difficult to win. However, his REPLAY feature gives you another chance whenever you can see that some, possibly abnormal, line of play might have won. But whenever you reshuffle or shut down, the deal is lost forever and you can never challenge your friends to find your solution. LOAD"JPM" from #26. Then MERGE"JPM MOD" on the flip side of this disk--it is already in ASCII for this purpose. Now SAVE the program to any disk you like and make sure BFR.BIN (on #26) also resides on this disk. When you RUN the program, the cards will be shuffled the first time. But if you want to replay a saved=> ____________________________________________________ game, press Q twice and select the option G)ET FROM DISK. You will be prompted for the name of the deal. The name you select will not be visible until ENTER is pressed when you can change it if necessary. If you affirm your choice you are returned to the MENU and must press R)EPLAY to utilize it. You can save any deal at any point by pressing Q twice selecting the option P)UT ON DISK. I have included 2 saved deals. STRAIT is a straight forward game which you should win if you play the cards in correct sequence. HEART2 requires one ab- normal play-just don't play the first 2 of hearts to appear. P.S. In no case is it necessary to use extensions.=* |

TOOLDEMO (CCTOOLS) This program is a demo of CER-COMP's CCTOOLS pro-
gram. Even though it is a demo version, it still
contains some usable and very useful functions. I
downloaded this program from DELPHI a number of
years ago. It is a freeware program designed to
give you a taste of this amazing utility. I was so
impressed that I ordered the full version rightaway.
I recieved version 1.2 as well as a 24 page laser
printed manual. You are encouraged to make a backup
of the original disk, but only the original will
execute. CCTOOLS is available from: CER-COMP LTD.
5566 Ricochet Ave.
Las Vegas, Nevada 89110
The following is a list of the disk functions which
will work on TOOLDEMO:

(I)nitialize performs a DSKINI function from within

rate, directory sort, printer and communications

the reason why I am submitting it to CFDM is the =>

completely functional arcive utility. Arciving has
two big advantages: (1)compression- which saves disk
space and (2)combining multiple files into one file-
which keeps related files together. The savings
can be substantial! The arcived file GEDEMO03.ARC
contains 22 single gran files. This has been com-
pressed into a single 4 gran file! A disk savings
of 18 grans. The reason for the disk savings is be-
cause 20 of the files are 24x24 pixel graphics which
are only 310 bytes in length. The minimum file
length in DOS is 2304 bytes in length (1 gran).
I would like to propose a CFDM standard that arciv-
ing be used in programs that require three or more
files. Any backfeed?

CFDM: the early years. - I was a late comer to CFDM, I had picked up the Rainbow at our local bookstore for YEARS. I sat at home with my CoCo & was happy. Then Rainbow announ- ced they would only sell by subscription. I panicked and sent in a three year subscription. Only when I clutched the LAST Rainbow did I begin to look for other support. It was then I sent my Rainbow refund and a little more to Rick. It wasn't 'til then, the end of your second year, that I knew about true in- teractive computing. For over a year I enjoyed our CFDM, thinking 'next mounth I'll get some back iss- ues'. Well, Ricks Trivia contest did it. His UN- BELIEVABLE offer of $4.00 a disk for back issues was irresistible. So here I am going over back issues, far into the night. I think I've found out more a- bout my CoCo in the last three weeks, than I ===> ____________________________________________________ have in the last three years of Rainbow. I've been making notes, (piles of notes) and backups. Hey, I even know how to make a submission disk. ( I bet Rick thinks it's about time.) I've finally been able to 'NIB' my 'CM3' files. Thank you Keiran for showing me how to avoid making 12 copies of every submission by hitting the break key when I wanted the up arrow. I knew such a fine publication could not have sprung up over night. But even the FIRST issue was great. And watching as over the months the edges are honed and bugs worked out. The pro- grams! The tutorals! The hints and tips! The peeks and pokes! The Questions answered, and especially the Family Trees; A forrest of friends I won't soon forget. If you don't have the back issues, GET'EM! No CoCo-est should be without them. GWS ==* |
DEFRAG I still have many problems with trying something
new. My purchase of the 512k Upgrade was no great
different. I delayed my opening of the CoCo, read
those instructions more than just once. Finally the
big day came, I did all as requested and also made
up a lead to ground myself -- connected to that foil
sheet and my metal watch band. Then I tried one of
the programs on the disk that came with the Upgrade
I tried "Backup Lightning". Must not have done it
correctly, because I made a mess of it. Recently I
tried Stuart's "DEFRAG" in CFDM Vol 1-25. It did
work great. Next I tried the "RAMDISK" program with
CFDM (Magazine side). Much easier and again, saves
wear on the disk drives if worried about them.
That April Fool's program in CFDM V0l 1-27?

I assumed that AFDOS stood for April Fool's DOS,
but I was still startled when my screen flashed
those words, "Now Erasing All the Disks in Your
Drives." Then I breathed easier. I had only one
disk in my drive, and it was a "Backup." Next I
checked the Disk in the drive -- no change. A
great Fun Idea.

A Question For H. Allen Curtis I've been planning to put the numerous SOLITAIRE
games on common disks for easy access & have noticed
that your games have a file named BFR.BIN that is
called by each game. The monthly program directory
of CFDM refers to this file as a DATA FILE. Am I
correct in my assumption that this file contains
graphics for the game, and maybe other data that is
common to ALL of your games? In other words is there
a unique BFR.BIN file for EACH game or will ONE BFR
file on a disk be sufficient for multiple games? I
can look at a BAS file but BIN files are a mystery.
By the way, what does BFR stand for?

A: to Stuart Wyss-Gallifent In regard to your question: Who is the youngest
active member of the CoCo Friend's Disk Magazine? I
believe it is Jonathan Weber of Reese, MI (CR# 189).
A close second is William A. Astle (CR# 99). Sorry,

COOLING A HOT COCO 3 I thought that I would tell Herb Forger how I went
and cooled my CoCo 3. First I opened up the slots
on the top left of the cover. Then I bought a 1"
fan and using double stick tape, mounted the fan in
the bottom of the case between the keyboard and the
power supply. I bought a 24v fan at American
Science and Supply, but Radio Shack has a 12v fan
listed in their catalog. I mounted a jack on the
left side of the case at the rear for plugging in
the power. Later on, one of our club members worked
on my CoCo and re-wired the fan across the power
supply. The fan blows across the power supply and I
feel very little heat on top of the case now.

DISK SECTION BACKUPS Does any good Friend out there per chance have a
disk copying program titled GAT BACKUP 2.1 by Greg
Wittmeyer, copyrighted (C) 1988? Among a few other
options the primary are for making (1) GAT backup,
(2) Entire disk backup, (3) Section backup. The
first two I use all the time as they are fast and
efficient; however, I strike out with Section back-
up. Upon entering the requested starting and ending
tracks and sectors the screen verifies it is read-
that section from the source disk; then when target
disk is inserted it indicates it is writing same to
said disk. When done and you are prompted to press 4
to see directory, there is none; nothing "took". I
was given a copy of the program by a friend long ago
and am without instructions. Could be program error,
probably McNeill error. Any assist appreciated. =>

EMULATOR QUESTION I have a question on the emulator. How do you handle
a multi-disk program. BARBARIAN QUEST, for example,
loads from one disk then has you flip the disk for
more input. Haven't spent much time with the
emulator. There may be an explanation in the docs.
If so just tell me. If not you may be able to give a
simple explanation.

RICK: Thanks for the question Roy! Although I have
found that BARBARIAN QUEST does not react well to my
PC mouse, you can give it a try. Here's what to do.
After making .DSK files of both sides of the =>

program, place the front side .DSK in the emulator's
drive 0 and LOADM. When it asks you to flip the
disk, simply press F2 and load the back side .DSK
in drive 0. Then press ESC to get back into the
emulator and press Enter to continue. Pretty neat
right? Just like a regular CoCo..except it's all
done on the screen!

Q: to all Picnic attendees What are you bringing to the Rick Cooper's Picnic?
I know what Rick is bringing - HIS FAMILY! Ha ha ha!
If I am fortunate, I will bring nice Pacific North
West weather: cool & breezy. Whatever the case, I'm
bringing a light-hearted game written just for this
picnic! At no other time will this game be offered.
So, if you weren't at the picnic and you want a copy
of this game, you'll have to find out who was there
and bum a copy off them!

QUESTIONS Q #1 Why would I have trouble making an entry of
one disk on new MASTER DIR#3? I decided to make a
new disk because I had some mistakes on the one I
had made. I started with CFDM #36-#1. Everything
went well..then Bonus Disk 1 through 9 went OK, but
#10 did not enter. After several tries, I tried to
enter #10 on another copy of NMD with no results.
I even tried a NO-NO and used my Master copy of #10
with no luck. What can I do?
Q #2 Why is it that some BAS files will not stand
alone when copied to another disk? One that comes
to mind is SHERLOCK/BAS on CFDM 31. I have that
and would like to have it along with this one.
=>
____________________________________________________
-----
RICK: Orval, I don't understand why that disk
wouldn't file on Master Directory 3! There's a
possibility that you've filled up the disk!! A
quick estimate of the number of filenames you've
filed would yield about 1100!! (Considering CFDM
#1-36 (each with 2 sides) and Bonus Disks 1-9.) If
you'd care to send me one of the disks you've used,
I'll check it out for you.
Per BASIC programs that stand alone when copied...
maybe they have some hidden files or...maybe the
author of SHERLOCK.BAS can tell us.

RGB for Ian In issue #37, Ian Cunningham was looking for an
adater for the 9 pin "D" connector on a Tandy RGB
monitor, that would allow him to use the monitor on
his CC3.
Ian did not state which Tandy RGB monitor he had,
but of all the ones I know of, none are directly
compatible with the CC3.
Output of the CC3 to an RGB monitor is as follows:
----------------------------------------------------
: Video Signal : Horizontal sync : Vertical sync :
:--------------------------------------------------:
: RGB Separate : TTL - Positive : TTL - Positive :
: Analog : : :
----------------------------------------------------
==>
____________________________________________________
The input signal to many RGB monitors is as follows:
----------------------------------------------------
: Video signal : Horizontal sync : Vertical sync :
:--------------------------------------------------:
:RGB & Intensity: TTL-Negative : TTL-Negative :
: separate : : :
: TTL-Positive : : :
----------------------------------------------------
So, simply adapting the plug between the CC3 and the
RGB monitor will not suffice. You will also need to
change the output of the CC3 from analog to digital
also.
You can find out more about your monitor by ordering
a Service Manual from TANDY National Parts ==>

Re-inking ribbons I have successfully revived faded ribbons using
a WP40 oil spray. I let the oil settle for one day
and then I fasten my electric drill to the turning
knob on the ribbon and let it run the ribbon through
the case. I found that I can use a fairly fast speed
without breaking the ribbon.
If you actually need to re-ink and you have dif-
ficulty in obtaining ink in a small quantity, you
can use stamp pad ink.
I haven't tried it myself, but you could follow
up with a squirt of WP40 and the electric drill
treatment.

Reply: To Paul B. O'Leary If you are going to try and use the COCO Emulator 2
on the Tandy 1000SX 286 PC System that your son gave
you for Christmas in 1994, then I would advise you
to up-grade your monitor to at the very least an EGA
monitor. The COCO Emulator 2 will not function on
the default CGA monitor.
I know this, because I just happen to own a Tandy
1000HX 8086 System and was told that even if I had
my System up-graded to the 1000SX 286 System, I
would still have to get an EGA monitor and EGA
monitor card for my Computer to use my COCO
Emulator 2 program.
So last year I got myself a 486DX2/66 System with a
SVGA color monitor and I am still not able to use
the COCO Emulator 2 program, because the COCO
Emulator 2 does not support an SVGA color monitor.=>

Where are you, Chai ????? It seems that Chairuth Bouphaphanh has dropped off
the face of the earth. Either he is keeping a low
profile or has stopped contributing to CFDM for the

I miss his style of humor. I can't draw orginal

I'm sure I'm not the only one that misses your
