"ABOUT CFDM" COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with that format exclusively. A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong. By providing a unique means of communication, maybe old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our knowledge and experiences! The success of this effort depends on each one who becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/ her two cents in the form of articles, programs, opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the manual with your starter kit for details on how to submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =* |

past winters. So here is a picture for you

snow and no othr noise except that of the
wind. Enjoy the picture and the season.

TRIVIA TEST ANSWERS COLORING CONTEST WINNERS NEW FROM ADVENTURE SURVIVORS RICK'S PICNIC |
| Back to top |
CFDM TRIVIA TEST ANSWERS In CFDM #36 we included a test of your CFDM trivia
knowledge. At this time (Feb. 9th) we have received
three responses. Since the time limit is not yet up,
I'll just give you the answers and report our winner
next month. (The responses I have received are very
good...and included interesting comments!)
1 The man-made structure was a cabin or log house.
2A The section ABOUT THE COVER became ABOUT THIS
ISSUE.
2B ACTIVE COCO replaced ADDRESS CORRECTION.
3 The symbols, => AND =*, help us navigate CFDM.
4 The CFDM HELP screen is accessed by pressing ALT.
5 The irritating "phenomena" was RED BORDER HANGUP.
6 The first graphic inside CFDM was in issue #4 and
was drawn by Chai Bouphaphanh =>
____________________________________________________
7 ACES UP by George Quellhorst wins as Most Popular
8 Issue #7 featured an interview with Cray Augsburg
9 David Mills wrote and presented us with VUMASTER
10 CFDM #16 featured our official logo (Jim Bennett)
11 Jim Gibbons has drawn all CFDM covers except for
issue #22. That cover was by Arthur Williams.
12 The very first HARDCOPY was issue #17. Arthur
Hallock creates HARDCOPY in Deming, New Mexico.
13 The CFDM Index was created and produced by Norm
Barson. Stuart Wyss and Rick wrote some of the
programming routines.
14 H. Allen Curtis is known for his solitaire games.
(Note: Others have contributed fine additions to
our Solitaire collection, but Allen has done the
most in number...and the quality is outstanding!)
15 Ray Berney produced the CFDM Logo Patch contest=>
____________________________________________________
16 Stuart Wyss Gallifent wrote the program in which
Rick was murdered.
17 Our late friend, Dale Kramer, was the victim of
a real murder.
18 The "real" RAT is Robert Allen Turner.
19 Roberta Sowell and Nancy Lowery won Star printers
in our first phone fests.
20 Terry Simons, Ray Smith, and Jumpin' Jim Bennett
also produce disk magazines. (Note: There are
other disk magazines, but their producers are not
members of our group.)
I hope everyone enjoyed doing the research and I'm
hoping to receive more entries before the March 1st
deadline!

NEW FROM ADVENTURE SURVIVORS Two fine graphic adventures are now available
from A.S. The Powerstones Of Ard (Ard I), and The
Powerstones Of Ard II were writen by Bill Cleveland
of THREE C'S PROJECTS - no longer in business. We
have made "arrangements" wilh Bill to keep these
Adventures "Alive & Available" for a reasonable
price. Both require a 128K CoCo 3, disk drive (Ard
II has two sides, and can use two drives), and dis-
play RGB or CMP colors. They are not copy-protected
so back-ups can be made. Both are a little deeper
role-playing than you might be used to - more like
Dungeons & Dragons types of adventures.
THE POWERSTONES OF ARD
The Quest For The Spirit Stone
(c) 1987 by Bill Cleveland
Ard I is an adventure that will keep you playing =>

for hours. It features single-key commands, 16 color
graphics, 100% Hi-Res graphic screens, full game
save, extensive play area, and Level advancement.
You choose your character's name, race, sex, and
ability points. Arrow keys are used for movement.
IT is easy to play, but a challenge to complete!!
Ard I was reviewed by Leonard Hyre in "Rainbow"
Magazine, 8/88, page 134.
THE POWERSTONES OF ARD II
The Five Towers Of Trafa-Zar
(c) 1990 by Bill Cleveland
Ard II is a fast paced adventure that is loaded
with graphics. You will explore more than 600 rooms,
and come eye-to-eye with monsters beyond your imag-
ination. It has an "improved" save feature, and easy
single-key command inputs with over 50 commands, =>

and 20 Spells. Arrow keys are used for movement.
This Adventure has two full disks of Excitement!!
Ard II was reviewed by Tony Olive in "Rainbow",
8/90, page 78.
Ard I: $12 + 2 S&H ($3 to Can., and 4 ALL others).
Ard II: $17 + 2 S&H (same as above).

For Trade or Sale I have 2 half-height Epson disk drives. I'm not
smart enough to get to work with my second system,
so I'm offering them to the CFDM Community.
The first (Epson SD-600 sn#P2099326) has a white
faceplate and no step in the plastic faceplate.
The second (Epson SD-600 sn#P2680635) has a grey
faceplate and does have the step in the plastic
faceplate.
I really would like to trade for any good CoCo 3
software. I paid $65 for the 2 drives. A collection
of games or graphics or graphic programs or
Adventures or Studio Works w/cable would really be
appreciated. Ray Berney Star Route 68 Box 880

Modems & Printers I was wondering if anyone out there has some modems
and/or printers they would like to sell me. I am
looking for an external modem that would work with
my CoCo 3, FD-502 Disk Drive, and RGB Monitor, via
the serial port I'd suppose. Also, any shareware
software to run the modem would be most helpful.
As for the printer, nothing fancy, just something
around 2400 baud. Anyone wanting to get in touch
with me on the matter please write or call. If
calling, please make it sometime after 4 p.m. E.S.T.
Thanks.

| DUNGEONS
OF DAGGORATH 4TH LEVEL SERIAL TO PARALLEL CONVERTER SHAREWARE- What is it? |
| Back to top |
DUNGEONS OF DAGGORATH 4TH LEVEL To William Astle: Hope the "stuff" I sent to you
was helpful. Did you go back, and TRY Extra Levels?
To ALL: The 4th Level is the most difficult of
the 5 Levels in the game. The only way to get to
this Level is to Kill the Wizard's Image on the 3rd
Level - auto move to the 4th, randomly placed, only
retain the objects carried in each hand, the Torch
in use, and you will be facing the same direction
you were when the Image was Killed.
There are 4 kinds of Creatures on the 4th Level -
4 Galdrogs, 6 Wraiths, 6 Knights, and 8 Scorpions.
The Galdrogs are the strongest (24-27 IR SW hits, 2
R hits, or 1 R + 13-15 IR SW hits to kill), but have
the best Objects (EL SW, MI SH, J R, and SE SC). The
Scorpions have no Objects, and are easy to kill - 1
IR SW hit, or 3 with a G R (or Empty Hand). =>
____________________________________________________
Find a Cell (dead-end Hallway) where the Beasts
can only approach from one direction, and you can
"wait in the dark" for them to find you. LISTEN for
their approach - all Beasts make certain sounds.
One place is the lower-right corner of the Level
(Map). It is the west end of a 10 Cell E-W Hallway.
As you make your way there, kill any Scorpion you
find, skip the Wraiths & Knights, but consider (if
your Heart-Beat has settled) killing a Galdrog with
2 Ring hits (he may have a EL SW or MI SH - makes
your "work" easier). Remember to allow your Heart
beat to settle, in between Ring Attacks.
Initially, use a "Hit & Run" tactic. Pre-type an
Attack, ENTER it just as a Beast comes into your
Cell, QUICKLY repeat your Attack 1-3 times (with an
IR SW), run to the other end of the Hall, Turn =>
____________________________________________________
around, and repeat this routine until he's defeated.
The game is a little slow executing commands. So
whenever you can, especially during combat, TYPE-
AHEAD! Don't wait for your commands to appear on
screen, and type quickly & accurately.
Also, a hit from any Creature on this Level, will
cause your DEATH (one from a Scorpion, causes you to
faint, but you don't have time to recover).
After you find a few objects, you'll be able to
"Stand & Fight" (all objects not in use, dropped at
your feet). All Beasts on this Level, except a
Scorpion, will pickup objects, before Attacking.
Generously use the Save feature to mark your pro-
gress, and GOOD HUNTING!

SERIAL TO PARALLEL CONVERTER This Summer my Blue Streak Ultima had a little
problem due to the heat and high humidity. However
at the time I didn't know this was the problem.
What I found out was, at times you can have a
minor problem with an electronic component and not
know it until you try a more complex job with it.
Everything was OK when I was printing in the draft
font. However, when I attempted a Character Set or
LQ Font command the printer wouldn't do it. Instead
the printer started doing all kinds of crazy things.
At first I assumed the printer was at fault, so I
tried another one,...same problem!! =>
____________________________________________________
About this time I remembered something in the
RAINBOW about the Blue Streak having an adjustment
if its timing went off. But I didn't have time to
go through the RAINBOW'S to find it. But I did
remember it used a program that used POKES to help
make this adjustment.
I had it set at 2400 Baud, and I was using POKE
150,18. So I changed the poke to POKE 150,19. To my
amazement it worked. It was just that simple!!
It took me a long time to finally solve this
problem. So if any of you friends ever have this
problem, I've written a program I'll pass along that
could be of much help!! =>
____________________________________________________
My CONVTFIX.BAS program is a straight forward and
simple program to operate. You can simply follow the
instructions on screen and you cant't go wrong.
A HELP option is provided if there is any question
at all. Also, a QUIT option, (press Q) can be used
at anytime to bring you back to the menu mode.
If this program doesn't solve your problem, you
may need to adjust your converter, or something
else is wrong. In the program I've provided the
information on where to find the RAINBOW MAG. fix.
I hope this helps someone!! PAUL B. O'LEARY

SHAREWARE- What is it? If a program is licensed as SHAREWARE, it is subject
to several conditions. Here are the conditions.
-it may be copied and given out to anyone.
-when giving it out, ALL the original files must go
with it. That is, all the files that came with the
program when you got it.
-if you have altered the program in any way (you are
allowed to do this), you may NOT give it out.
-you may charge a small fee for making copies. This
fee should be under $5.00 and only what is needed
to cover the disk, and perhaps time/energy.
=>
____________________________________________________
-unless stated, there is a limit to how long you may
use the program. The Shareware concept is known as
"try-before-you-buy". You get the fully working
software for a certain amount of time (usually up
to a month), and then you are asked to "register"
it. If you don't register, you should stop using
the program. If you do register, usually by
sending a very reasonable fee, you get several
benefits, which generally include:
-a printed manual of the program
-free copy of the latest version
-future upgrades of later versions
-technical support if you need it
Sometimes there is an "enhanced" version of the
program available, which you get by registering.
=>
____________________________________________________
If you are using the program for any commercial
uses, YOU MUST REGISTER it.
For interest: ASP stands for Association of Share-
ware Professionals
FREEWARE - program can be copied, distributed, and
used without the need for registering
PUBLIC DOMAIN - program can be copied, modified, etc
without permission. Author loses
rights to the program
CRIPPLEWARE - program that has had some features
disabled, or crippled, forcing you to register
it if you want to use it properly. Not a nice
thing to do.
GHOSTWARE - programs rumored to exist, but don't. =*

Fractals of Sorts
I have enclosed on the disk a few different kinds
of fractals for your enjoyment.
NEWTON.NIB is a Newton's Basin of Attraction
TRIANGLE.NIB is a Serpinski Triangle Fractal
SPIDER.NIB is a type of Mandelbrot, but varied
equations give it a multi-"legged"
look.
-6MANDEL.SQS was too complicated to be NIBbed. It
was saved in the SQS format, and you will
need SQSSHOW to see it. The -6 will
cause this fractal to color-cycle.

HRIDDLE! Jim Bennett of the ECP (East Coast People) isn't the
only one who can come up with interesting and
challenging HRIDDLEs. We here at the BDS have
decided to put together an HRIDDLE for the Friends.
(Even you, J.B.) The riddle is a rebus. The answer
is a Friend's name. Can you guess it?

I reproduced this picture from another calendar
photo. It represents the emergence of crocuses
from the snow in early spring. Select SPRING in

I don't remember (and didn't take time to try to
find out) from whose work the title is quoted.
Perhaps some of our erudite Friends can remind me.

| Gettin'
Back To My Roots! PAUL B. O'LEARY WEDDING BELLS FOR A FRIEND!! |
| Back to top |
Gettin' Back To My Roots! Hello fellow CoCoist's! My name is James and you can
call me Jimbo, everyone else does. Anyways, I just
received my third issue of CFDM and felt it was my
duty to get off my lazy old butt and put in my two
cents. No problem...
I'm 19 years old and have been CoCoing for the last
7 years. I started out knowing less than nothing
but after slaving over articles in "The Rainbow"
(R.I.P) I picked up quite a few skills. I was
obsessed with programming for about the whole year
of 1990 but then found myself unable to find the
time to sit down and do what I used to love. I
graduated last summer from high school, and now work
3rd shift in a pressed metals plant, I am enjoying
long days to myself. Therefore allowing plenty of
time to play with our favorite little computer. =>
____________________________________________________
Okay, during that year of programming, I was able to
come up with a few little gems. No, it's nothing
you'd see at Radio Shack for $34.95, but I'm proud
of them just the same. So, I've decided to share
these bits of work the community. I have a whole
disk of these things that, besides my family and me,
no one has ever seen. Plus, I feel it is my duty to
send my stuff to Rick, for it is obvious he works
very hard to produce another interesting issue of
CFDM every month. THANK YOU RICK!!! I will submit
a few programs every couple months and you can judge
for yourself. Some are better than others, but as
long as they make at least one Friend smile, then
I'm doing my job.
On a different note, I used to have over 10 pen pals
from all over the country. But, as my interest =>
____________________________________________________
in computing dwindled, so did my letters. But,
thanks to CFDM, that interest is back in full swing,
and I would love to swap ideas and stories with
anyone interested. Feel free to write. So long
CoConuts!!

P.S. Who knows, with all this CoCoing, I may have
to make a programming comeback and create some new
material for '95!

RICK: James programs seem to fit in the Sci Fi issue
so look for them next month! =>

PAUL B. O'LEARY Hello fellow CoCo-Nuts !! I live in Halifax,Mass
right on East Monponsett Lake, now referred to as
Twin Lakes because of a man-made road that connects
an island to each side of the main land. This cuts
the lake in half, and the island has about 30 homes
on it.
I've been an Over The Road Truck Driver from 1965
till 1985, but due to a back injury developed over
this time I no longer can drive trucks. This limits
the work I can do, which has caused financial hard-
ships in the past 10 years.
I've always had good mechanic ability, at age 50
I'm taking a home study course from N.R.I. Schools
on Master Small Engine Repair. =>
____________________________________________________
I am Divorced and have two Sons, Brian 30, and
Timothy 25. I purchased my first CoCo 2 in 1986, I
now have a CoCo 3 128K, and a CoCo 3 512K. I've
ordered the CoCo 3 Emulator this week. My son Brian
has given me his Tandy 1000 SX with harddrive, and
286 CPU installed, he is upgrading to the 486 66 mhz
I hope the 1000 SX works with the CoCo 3 Emulator!!
In the RAINBOW Mag. June 1991 Pg.75 my Program THE
MAGIC MORTGAGE was Received and Certified. However,
due to a loading problem (cassette) it never got
reviewed. It now is on Disk, no loading problem!!
I sold a few, and was complimented on it being the
best Basic Program ever written for the CoCo, this
made me feel good, and surprised!!
=>

At this time I would like to thank all of the
folks who contribute to the C.F.D.M. for their time
and efforts, in making it an enjoyable disk mag.
I for one will continue to support C.F.D.M.
Again Everyone Thank You !!!!

WEDDING BELLS FOR A FRIEND!! It's with great pleasure that we announce the
upcoming marriage of one of the CFDM Friends. In her

EMULATOR FUND UPDATE MONO PALETTES FOR THE REGISTRY PICNIC by Ben Walker <g> |
| Back to top |
COCO EMULATOR FUND UPDATE On January 16th the CoCo 3 Emulator Bounty Escrow
stood at $296.75. Today, February 18th, our fund is
at $311.75! With Phone Fest V coming up in a couple
of weeks, we hope to be adding a few more dollars in
our efforts to pay the price of transportation for
our special guest, Jeff Vavasour. Thanks to all who
have generously donated to the fund! And now I hope
that many of our Friends will make plans to meet all
your friends at the picnic on July 15, 1995.
Here's how we stand:
Beginning Balance January 16, 1995........$296.75
Arthur Hinman 10.00
Rolland & Dottie Funk 5.00
Ending Balance February 18, 1995 $311.75

MONO PALETTES FOR THE REGISTRY Thanks for the prompt confirmation that I am
registered. I'm a member of a small CoCo club up in
Manistee, MI, and drive over a hundred miles to the
monthly meeting. I'm also a full-time student who
doesn't have a lot of cash to spend on gear, but it
feels good knowing that I can still contribute to
the larger CoCo community.
One of the club members let me try the Registry
disk and I found the color palettes didn't translate
well to my monochrome monitor. I often have this
problem with RS-DOS programs. Kudos to DMA for it's
ability to switch to a monochrome mode, not to
mention CFDM's color selection.
Here's my plea. Programmers, DOCUMENT YOUR
PALETTE ASSIGNMENTS! Or even better, keep track of
them and put in a routine that will switch them =>

shades the monochrome can handle. A hint: 63 for
white, 0 for black, and 32 for a red that turns into
a smooth gray.
I am otherwise really impressed with the way the
Registry presents data. This is a way cool database
system. I showed it to people who use the commercial
offerings on PCs and they were blown away. When can
I get a program like this?
Anyhow, you asked for the palette changes for the
Registry (monochrome colors). Here's the short
answer:

Thanks for your interest in my problem, I really
appreciate all you do for us CoCoists. I'm finishing
my first year of study in Electronics, and I'm
mulling over the idea of a laptop CoCo2. Anybody
ever done this? Anyone have any thoughts about the
problems I'd need to solve? Send 'em on to:

DISK PRICE INCREASE! GETTING EXCITED!! KUDOS |
| Back to top |
FLIPPIE DISK PRICE INCREASE! Over the years the prices of diskettes have fallen from the once exorbitant rate we once paid. I can remember paying $1.50 for a single-sided double density disk when I first purchased my disk drive! The prices have come down since then to a very reasonable rate. It's not uncommon to get a box of ten quality diskettes for 5 or 6 dollars. That's single-sided double density of course. Since RAINBOW first introduced the use of flippie diskettes with it's RAINBOW ON DISK, I have been a strong advocate of their usage. After a couple of years purchasing flippies from a wholesaler, I was able to locate the producer of the flippies I have been using for about five years. The prices stayed pretty much the same during this period, but => ____________________________________________________ I found that I could get a discount by purchasing a few thousand at a time. Early last year I purchased six thousand flippies. After noticing that my supply was nearly gone, I decided I'd make another order for about three thousand. Much to my disappointment it seems that another company bought out my supplier and has raised the prices and will no longer give me a discount on quantity purchases! The price of black flippies has been set at 25% higher than the last time I ordered! And the colorful flippies that we have all been enjoying will now cost me over 50% more than before!! Upon learning this I changed my order from three => ____________________________________________________ thousand colored flippies to one thousand black flippies. Fortunately the sales lady called me back within the hour and said they had a few thousand on the shelf and they would sell them to me at the same price as the black flippies. This was to be a one time offer. Needless to say I took them all! As you can see circumstances beyond my control are forcing me to increase the price of my flippie disk offerings. After April 1st, a package of 25 with sleeves will cost $17 + $2 s/h..100 with sleeves will cost $55 + $5 s/h. Out of country Friends will have to tack on another $2 s/h for 25 and $7 for the box of 100. I'm sorry but I can no longer afford to pay the postage on out of country orders. I will honor the old prices until April 1st. =* |
GETTING EXCITED!! I'm starting to get a little excited about Rick's
Picnic!! Within two weeks of the official announce-
ment, Ray Berney and Ben Walker reserved their seats
at the Picnic!!...and last night Jim Sternett (CoCo
Trader) called to say that he is very interested in
attending. Today (Feb. 25th) I received an Internet
message from Jeff Vavasour.."The odds are still
quite good that I should be able to attend." So, let
me encourage all to seriously look at your calendars
and try to be with us. It should be a very enjoyable
time!
I'm running just a little behind schedule on this
issue, but as I look it over I see it as a very good
issue. Thanks to Logan Bleckley and Brian O'Neill,
we have a quality program, PACDUDE, for your =>

enjoyment! Others are also doing some detective
work and finding "buried treasure". You'll find the
results of their work in future issues of CFDM.
By the time you read this, Phone Fest V will be
history. In addition to all subscribers receiving
a brochure, I sent out about 200 others to past
members. It should be a great event! My thanks to
Godfrey Moll and Barry Miller for their donations to
this fest. A portion of the funds will go for Jeff's
travel fund! Thanks for your generosity Godfrey and
Barry!!
Jumping to another thought...It's funny how our mind
is always working...thinking...remembering! Today I
was thinking about what an honor and a priviledge =>

it has been for me to be involved (pretty intensely)
in one of the major CoCo groups which replaced our
old friend, the Rainbow. And just to think that we
might have a chance to meet many of our Friends at
a CoCo fest here in Kentucky!! I guess the picnic
will be the first CoCo fest ever held in Kentucky!
Good CoCoing until next issue...Rick

KUDOS What makes CFDM the best disk magazine in the world
today? I firmly believe it is directly because our
many Friends have always generously contributed the
various products of their enormous talents. While
we are tenacious in our belief that the CoCo is THE
great home computer, we practice what we preach by
continuing to generate new programs, graphics, and
ideas. Surely no other computer group is as active
as those that subscribe to CFDM. Thank you so much
for faithfully supporting CFDM and the group with
your input!
In this issue we feature the work of nearly thirty
of our Friends! Please let it be known that we
always welcome you to let us know what you are doing
with your CoCo! =>

** PICNIC + OTHER ITEMS ** RICK: Muriel & I know our way to Liberty Kentucky
and would really enjoy meeting other CoCoNuts at a
PICNIC any weekend after the 4th of July!
I have the CoCo3 EMULATOR and will explore its
use when we get HOME at the end of March -- sorry to
hear that it requires a VGA Monitor.
In ISSUE #34 under QUESTIONS & ANSWERS LESLIE
WALTZ talked about 'Error Codes' - said 'load ERRORS
from the program side and print it out.' I couldn't
find it on my CFDM Disk???
As to the POSTAGE INCREASE -- 36 cents a year
on each Friends CFDM mailing doesn't sound like much
-- but it ALL ADDS UP! My suggestion right now =>
____________________________________________________
is that when WE purchase Hardware or Software from
RICK we be sure that he is completely reimbursed for
his SHIPPING EXPENSES -- In the last PHONE FEST I
did not need any of the Auction Packages so I asked
about purchasing some more DISKS -- RICK made me an
offer on 300 Disks! When they came in a HUGE BOX I
couldn't believe it and then the amount of POSTAGE!!
I then sent RICK another check to help cover his
costs. Maybe in this way we can keep the ENTERPRISE
going for a few more years?
RAY BERNEY: The large CFDM Patch fits nicely under
my ABC Senior Bowling Award for 125 Pins Over Series
and just above the slash pocket of the windbreaker.
I ENJOY wearing it!!! GODFREY J. MOLL

RICK: Thanks for all your comments Godfrey! This
comment is being entered on Feb. 9th and issue #37
is to be mailed any day now. I'm hoping to place
the Phone Fest V programme and an announcement of
Rick's Picnic in that issue's mailer. So by the
time you read this you'll see that Rick's Picnic is
scheduled for Saturday, July 15th. Since this may
be a "one shot deal" or "a once in a lifetime event"
I strongly urge everyone with even the slightest
notion of attending to make plans to do so. I'm sure
we can have a wonderful time and your presence will
make it a very unique experience. Be assured, you
will enjoy meeting Godfrey and Muriel!

DEATH GATE by Glenn Dahlgren A little trivia: Nan, just pointed out a review on
a new graphic adventure in "Computer Gaming World"
(PC stuff). The game was Death Gate, published by
Legend Entertainment, and the "designer" is our old
friend Glen Dahlgren. It's good to know that he's
still out there, "Alive & Kicking".
-----
RICK: Thanks for your report Lin and Nan! According
to Glen (of Sundog Systems fame), he's "kicking
pretty high"! I spoke with Glen on the phone about
a month ago (January). He was very happy with his
new position, programming for Legend, and said his
new game, Death Gate, on CD ROM for PC, was doing
GREAT!! I had to see it for myself and ordered a
copy thru Tiger Software. Although I don't have =>

a Sound Blaster (for audio), it is a very impressive
game. By the way I'm still stuck in the first world
of the program.
Glen stated that over 100 people were under his
direction in the production of this software. There
are voices for each of the characters. Some of the
graphics were scanned and then retouched by PC
professional artists. The animation is also very
impressive.
(Death Gate is published by Legend Entertainment and
marketed by Accolades. The price is about $35.)
Glen is also very excited about his next project. It
will be a "virtual reality adventure" and is =>

scheduled to take two years to complete.
Congratulations to Glen Dahlgren!! It's great to
see "one of our own" doing so well in the PC world!

I can't say enough for the great job you are doing.
CFDM is one of the things I look forward to each
month (second to my social security check, of
course)! It sure gives me a lot of pleasure and I
know it does for the other friends too.
Our kids gave Jean and me a PC for Christmas. It's a
great gadget but far from user friendly, all those
icons to click and double click-ugh! But Jean plays
with it in addition to her CoCo, which leaves me
free to continue with my CoCo. So now we have three
complete computer stations set up. Wow, what a
complicated world we live in.

FOND MEMORIES OF COCO The letter below was received in response to a flyer mailed to Friends who hadn't been heard from for awhile. Although it appears Jerry will not be with us, I do very much appreciate his taking the time to send me this letter! Thanks Jerry! ---------------------------------------------------- When I received your letter today, it brought back a lot of wonderful memories of the COCO days. I am VERY sad to report that I donated my COCOs to what I thought was going to be a worthy cause. This happened about 3 years ago. I donated it to a woman that worked with Disabled Veterans and she said she was going to use it in her office. About a year later, I received a strange phone call from the Baltimore office inquiring => ____________________________________________________ about the computers. As I was to find out, this woman no longer there and had never reported the donation. To make a long story short, my beloved COCOs ended up in the second hand store. Needless to say I was extremely upset. Since my deduction had already taken place and the computers long gone, the only thing I have left is anger. A word of advice to any one planning on donating any- thing, BE VERY CAUTIOUS!!!!!! I now have a 486 and am very happy with this system. I donated ALL of my COCO accessories and software and have converted my data files over to the 486. The COCO was my first computer and will always be => ____________________________________________________ my first love. When I say I miss my COCO, I truly mean that from the bottom of my heart. Just the other day, before your letter arrived, I mentioned to my wife how much I missed the ol' COCO. ....If Radio Shack had taken the time and effort to upgrade and promote the ol COCO, it would be THE home computer on every desk right now. I learned everything I know about computers on the COCO and still miss the days of keying in program listings and altering them. The COCO user world is one of the best group of people I've ever dealt with in ANYTHING...It truly was a pleasure working with the COCO AND the COCOists of the world. ..."KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK". =* |
For Rick!
Hope you and yours had a terrific Christmas and
New Year. I've been tied up so to speak with this
so called IBM project of mine, but RAY BERNEY kept
the fire under me to get some submissions back to
CFDM. He's quite a persuader! I asked him if you
had hired him as a West Coast CFDM HIT MAN. He
really got a kick out of it. Just thought I'd let
you know I was still alive, lost 29 lbs, all but
gave up cigerettes, (2 a day) at this time! NO
THANKS TO IBM MACHINES!! Ha Ha!! I was really really
touched this last hospital episode, I received cards
from CFDM members I didn't even know! (I promise to
order the registration program as soon as I can!)

still thankful for CFDM, the best Stress releiver

New Ideas Dear Rick,
CFDM is now a few years old, and all the bugs
are out of the program! (We hope) You remapped
some of the granules that store the articles, you
gave us a convenient one-sided submission/entry
disk, made changes for ADOS, and most recently,
replaced the troublesome SPR files with something
seemingly more reliable. Here are some other ideas
for you to toy with. Of course, I won't be upset
if they never see the light of day!
1. Mouse-driven magazine - point and click option
for moving around and reading. (Rick: I regret
I never implemented this one.)
2. 80 column screen =>
____________________________________________________
3. Change the way CFDM allocates storage of the
entry. If an entry takes up only 1 screen,
the remaining two screens are "wasted" space.
(Rick: No real waste because they're not stored)
4. Making the logo of a hand and a disk much
larger, and making baud and keyclick as
selectable items on boot up.
5. How about starting a SECOND magazine for all
of us Emulator users out here? (I know you
have lots of time on your hands (GRIN))
(Rick: No time, but an excellent idea!)
6. How about a COCO HOMECOMING in the flavor of
the SATURN HOMECOMING? We could all drive to
your house, bring our CoCos and disks, park on
your back yard, and have a big picnic. =>
____________________________________________________
A person dressed up as a 6809 chip could enter-
tain the kids, and you would give us tours of
CFDM HQ. Then we all gasp as Marty Goodman,
and Tony Scerbo, and Dr. Nibble all get up on
the stage and lecture us on our favorite machine
while Mrs. Cooper, and the Cooper kids, dressed
as GIME chips and 512k upgrades, pour us tall
glasses of "CoCo-Juice".
(Rick: The Picnic is coming! Hope to see you!)
Is parking a problem down there? (GRIN)
(Rick: No, my driveway parks four cars, easy!)

RENEWAL CFDM + Hello Rick. I'm sending $30 for the next six issues.
My subscription expires with #36.
For anyone that may be interested, sometime ago I
asked if it would be possible to use the CoCo MAX II
Glyphic fonts diectly from the keyboard with COCOMAX
3, as the COCO MAX2 does. You told me in a note that
you did not think so. Well guess what? After I tried
and completed customizing the screen of my CM3, I
thought I would play with the font file. After many
tries and failures I was able to kill a font file on
Disk #1 of the ColorWare CM3 Fonts. Then copied the
Glyphic as icons to Disk #1. It also worked on the
Califonts disk from a back issue of CFDM, but I had
to give it the same name as the file that I killed.
Maybe not kosher but it works. - Buck =>

SCRIPTURE & .... First I'd like to answer your "Bible Trivia" in
CFDM issue 35 pg 13. I think it is John 3:8.
2nd: I'd like to order "GRAFEXPRESS" - "PHOTON"
and "SINISTAAR", from your Sundog System packages.
I read a "Review" that sounded pretty interesting.
3rd: Nothing much really. As someone else once
mentioned, I too use "DOUBLE40" to access both sides
of drives and format for 40 tracks. Because this
program is stored in the cassette buffer (I guess),
it won't work with Max 10 or Max 3. With those pro-
grams the cassette buffer is also used (at least I'm
plugged into the cassette port. So while using Max 3
or Max 10, I'm in 35 track mode(?). Anyway I like to
use all sides of my disks (not all flippies) and
like to use 40 tracks wherever I can. =>
____________________________________________________
Because of all this I HAVE to keep note of which is
what (not just once have I lost ALL) -- ruined the
directory or something. SOoo my disk directories
and Disk Jacket directories are noted to do that.
When I'm through for the day (maybe), I like to run
"4DR-0". It's on the other side. Not a real
program, as I noted in "Potpourri", it just returns
all my drives to zero and reminds me of my total
fascination for this machine that you all have made
so GREAT! Thanks again and again.
- Vic Neufeldt

4DR-0 (A shorty) This can hardly be called a program -- just a
few commands, messages on the screen, and the tune
"Fascination" by Herb Schuler from CFDM Vol 1-25 pg
13. I like to run it to restore all my drives to 0,
and perhaps think of what I may have learned. The
tune helps unwind. Lines 17, 19, 21, and 23 restore
the drives to 0. If some drives are lacking, just
delete line 19 for drive 1, line 21 for drive 2 and
line 23 for drive 3. Everything else will still be
the same. Change "Mac" in line 180 to whatever,
etc, etc. As I said, "It's nothing special on my
part, but I like to run it. If I forget, or the pro-
gram I'm running makes a "Cold Start" for me -- like
Max 3, Max 10, or Simply Better, I just start over
again with the command on line 17. I have =>

it taped on the front of my disk drive just in case
I have a memory block and can't think of it. It at
least restores drive 0 and I continue from there. I

A 2nd CoCo 3 System Today, February 2, 1995, at 11:09 a.m., I got my 2nd
CoCo 3 system to properly function! After months of
trying to fix an old Disto MC-1 FDC, finding another
working floppy system WITH an FDC, seeing which
power supply works with what, I finally got another
system online.
For those of you who don't know what on earth I'm
talking about, listen up. Anyone can shove a floppy
controller into the side of a CoCo, but I put all my
CoCo 3 circuit boards and necessary hardware into a
single box. The CoCo 3 system I'm typing this on was
done over 2 years ago. It's kind of nice to just
turn on 2 switches and the 512k CoCo 3, dual double-
sided floppies and RGB monitor come to life.
The 2nd system is a 512k CoCo 3 with a Model 3 power
supply, an FD-501 single floppy drive and a =>

26-3029 long board FDC. Thanks to Vic Kells and Ray

HUNTING IN INDIANA One day Farmer Jones was asked if there was any good hunting on his farm. The farmer said, "yes, last week I thought I would do a little hunting, got my rifle and found that I had one round of ammo. But I went anyway. It was a nice day. I came across four doves sitting on a limb. Taking good aim to make sure not to miss I fired and split the tree limb. The limb caught the feet of the doves. The bullet went through and hit a big turkey. I know it was big because it hit and killed a deer. The recoil of the shot knocked me back into a stream. When I stood up, my overalls were full of fish....and it was not even a good day for hunting!!!" I hope somebody laughs. I did. - Buck =* |
SEARCHING! COCO3 Two weeks ago while doing some Honey doos for the wife, I passed a local service station and saw a car with Nebraska license plates bearing the logo COCO3 in large letters. I tried to get turned back in the direction of the station but "No Bananas". The car was gone, and the freeway is close to the station, do we have any CFDM members from Nebraska? I have seen several mentions of people having 6809 on their plates but never COCO3. Maybe it meant something else. Perhaps a guy named COCO and it was his 3rd Car. Naaaaaaaaa, never happen! The name is Unique! Anyone know him? ------ ***MAC*** RICK: Okay Dan, the search is on....who can track down the mysterious COCO3 car? =* |
40 Tracks DS? RAMDISK? I have been trying for a number of months to make my
double sided drives work with both sides under BASIC
I have finally succeeded. 80TRKS.BIN is designed to
work with both DECB 2.0 and 2.1 (DISK EXTENDED COLOR
BASIC UNRAVELLED was invaluable since I have only
DECB2.1) and I think it is working properly. I have
not tested it with DECB2.0 so if there are any bugs
I can be contacted. (Through CFDM is preferred)
To operate your disk drives as 80 track drives (DS)
type: LOADM"80TRKS":EXEC. As a note: the program
sets the 6ms step rate. The back of the drive is
accessed as tracks 40 to 79.
=>
____________________________________________________
Another feature in this program is a RAMDISK. It is
also 80 tracks. For the RAMDISK to work properly,
you must have 512K. It is accessed as Drive 3 since
only three double sided drives can be connect to the
CoCo. This is a hardware limitation. If you have
only 128K, the program will still attempt to access
drive 3 but will scramble your basic program and the
basic interpreter in the RAM. If you do not have
512K, DO NOT USE DRIVE 3!!!!!!!
I hope you people out there enjoy this tool.
The source code is in 80TRKS.ASM if anyone is inter-
ested in how the program works.

which is entirely written in CoCo Disk BASIC and
does just that. It was originally written for a
CoCo 1, but will work equally well on any model. To
use the program you will need a special MS-DOS disk
to act as an intermediary. It's created simply by
using:
FORMAT A: /1/8 or FORMAT B: /1/8
(Use the above with early MS-DOS.)
OR
FORMAT A: /1/4/8 or FORMAT B: /1/4/8 =>
____________________________________________________
(Use with later versions of MS-DOS.)
You can copy files to and from this single-sided
5 1/4" disk as usual in MS-DOS, but it has the added
bonus of being readable by TRANSFER.BAS. The menu of
TRANSFER.BAS allows you to view your CoCo or MS-DOS
disk's directory, to delete files from the MS-DOS
disk, and to move files between your CoCo disk and
MS-DOS. Whenever you are prompted for a drive, enter
the number 0-3. Answer the "file(s)?" prompt with
the form "filename.ext:d". MS-DOS style wildcards
can be used (e.g. "*.DAT" means all files with the
extension ".DAT").
Notes on use:
=>
____________________________________________________
1. PC files use "EOF markers" at the end of text
files. If you are sending text files, reply "Y"
to prompts asking about them.
2. If your CoCo Disk BASIC can't go beyond 35 tracks
run INITPC.BAS on the blank MS-DOS disk. This
will lock out tracks 35-39 to prevent files from
being written there.
3. Ironically, TRANSFER.BAS doesn't work in the
emulator. The emulator is designed for standard
CoCo disks only. Use the emulator's PORT program
to move files instead.
4. The program doesn't add or remove LFs. This is
not a problem for BASIC programs, or moving data
files either way, but in certain circumstances it
can make everything come out on one line. A fix
is to write a program to change CRs to CR/LFs. =*
|
NAMING DISKS I have been working with mainframe computers for a long time. Their disks always have identification information both on and in the disk. Why not do the same thing with the disks that we use on the COCO? I wrote DISKNAME to do just this. A 20 byte name can be put in sector 1 of the directory track as this sector is not being used. This program will work on all versions of the COCO. There are comments in the program where changes can be made. One of the ways this information can be used is with a program for printing a directory listing. =* |
PALETTE CONVERSION:PALCNVRT.BAS. As you all are probably aware, the palette codes
for RGB produce different colors on a CMP monitor,
and vice versa. Further, some CMP codes have no
direct RGB equivalent and vice versa. The freeware
program "The Projector" does a good job at
approximating the colors from one monitor type to
another, so I have extracted the color conversion
scheme from this program and used it to create the
BASIC program: "PALCNVRT.BAS". This program will
allow you to convert color codes between RGB to CMP,
or CMP to RGB. This is useful if you want your
program to include the ability to produce the proper
colors with either monitor type. When you run the
program, you will be allowed to select whether you
wish to convert from: 1] RGB > CMP or
2] CMP > RGB. =>
____________________________________________________
Select the appropriate option and then enter the
palette codes that you wish to convert, one at a
time. The program will then give you the closest
approximation of the color and will then ask if you
wish to convert another color code. Answer yes to
continue or no to exit. I hope that this program
proves as useful to the CoCoFriends as it has to me.

PRINTING A DIRECTORY LISTING I started writing PRINTDIR in 1986 before I
realized that such programs were available. I have
been changing & expanding it over the years. It is
set up for a DMP130 printer at 2400 baud. Commented
lines will show you where print commands are that
have to be changed for other printers. The program
also includes a high speed disk I/O routine that was
written by L TODD KNUDSEN.
The program will print a directory listing in 1,
2, 3 or 4 columns, based on how many files are saved
on the disk. 10, 12 or 17 characters to the inch are
used depending on how many columns are printed. This
listing can be taped onto the jacket. A listing can
also be printed in Microfont for taping onto the
disk itself. =>
____________________________________________________
The program will print disk ID if it is in sector
1 of the directory, or you can enter ID information.
The number of free granules is also printed. This
program will run on all versions of the COCO.

Pac-Dude INTRODUCTION
Pac-Dude is a game, a clone of Pac-Man, that I wrote
a few years ago and released as public domain. The
game was posted on several bulletin board systems,
but since then many BBSs have disappeared. It was
recently brought to my attention that there still is
a large group of coco users who would enjoy playing
Pac-Dude, but have not had access to it before.
On the flip-side of CFDM is the file PAC.BIN. It is
the only file needed to boot up the game. In older
versions, Pac-Dude was broken up into several files.
This latest version has some minor improvements in
graphics and it has a new game play option, training
mode. Pac-Dude is played on a RGB monitor. =>
____________________________________________________
BACKROUND
In the late spring of 1990, I decided to buy a modem
so that I could find public-domain/shareware coco
software and games on BBSs. I found many games, but
very few were written exclusively for the coco 3.
One game written for the coco 3 that I found is
called Pac-OS9. It's a Pac-Man game designed to run
under OS9 level 2. It's a fine game, but I noticed
that the animation was a little choppy. It's diff-
icult to have smooth animation and still have OS9
multitasking.
I knew that a much better Pac-Man could be written
for the coco 3. I wanted to make a game that the
coco user could show off to his/her friend with =>

the PC.
Pac-Dude doesn't have all the neat little quirks
that the original Pac-Man had. That was not my
primary goal. I wanted to make a game with the
smoothest, most pleasant operation. I believe that
I achieved this goal with Pac-Dude. I hope you
agree.
You can reach me at my mailing address. Press break
from the title screen of Pac-Dude. Or if you have
access to the information deer trail known as
Internet, email me at bso@u.washington.edu

Pac-Dude: Game Play I'm assuming that you're familiar with how Pac-Man
is played, so I will only describe stuff that is
specific to Pac-Dude.
Pac-Dude must be played with the left joystick. I
don't recommend using the deluxe joystick. With the
regular joystick, the stick can be rolled on the
edge around in a circle. This is very helpful when
trying maneuver the Pac-Dude around corners quickly.
To pause the game during play, press the joystick
button.
At the start of the game, you're given three lives.
An extra life is granted each time you clear two
mazes.

SCORING
1 point - eating a dot; 25 points - power pellet
100,200,400,800 points - eating first, second, third
& fourth consecutive ghosts
100,200,400,600 points - eating cherries, pear,
orange & apple bonus food
800,1000,1200,1500 - eating fifth, sixth, sev-
enth & eighth bonus food
After eating a bonus food, each time the same bonus
is eaten again, it is worth 1200 points. The eighth
bonus is an exception, it's always 1500 points. =>
____________________________________________________
Once the bonus has been eaten on a particular level,
no bonus will appear again until you reach the next
level.
TRAINING MODE
Press T from the title screen if you wish to play
a training game. In a training game, the ghosts may
sometimes choose to only stun Pac-Dude, not kill
him. This way, you may learn how to play better
without always being penalized when a mistake is
made. The ghosts choose to stun, rather than kill,
about half of the time. In a training game, no
score is earned.

The NEW NIBSHOW! Just in time for the new year, comes the NEW
NIB SHOW v. 1.2
Several people have been using my Fractals program
and need a slide-show program for the fractals,
especially using the red, green, and blue filters,
and of course, color-cycling, which were features
of the Fractals program.
Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome: NIBSHOW 1.2
This NEW version of NIBSHOW will do everything that
the previous one did, and more.
I have added lines and routines that allow several
of the Fractals features to be seen using NIBSHOW.=>
____________________________________________________
If you remember, when you wanted to animate a NIB
picture like a CoCo Max 3 picture, you put a
special beginning on the filename. It was this:
*4BIKE.NIB The * means animate, and the 4
was the speed.
I have added a similar way for Fractals. It is this:
-8MANDEL.NIB The hyphen - means do a fractal
color-cycle, and the 8 is the
1=fastest speed. Of course, MANDEL.NIB is
9=slowest the six character filename.
You can use speeds from 1 to 9, just by placing the
speed number after the hyphen in the filename. =>
____________________________________________________
To force NIBSHOW to use the Red, Green, and Blue
coloring from Fractals, instead of a number after
the hyphen, simply put a letter: R for Red, G for
Green,B for Blue, or S for Standard.
Examples:
-2JULIA.NIB color-cycle JULIA.NIB at speed 2
-9ZOOMIN.NIB color-cycle ZOOMIN.NIB at speed 9
-RSPIKE.NIB show SPIKE.NIB using Red coloring
-GSWIRL.NIB show SWIRL.NIB using Green coloring
The cycling and coloring work in both viewing and
slide-show modes of NIBSHOW. As before, you can
use the RENAME command to change the filenames to
values that you like. Send us your animated
fractals! =*

JEFF CHO'S MAX-10 BORDERS As many of you probably know, I am very interested
in expanding the capabilities of Max-10. I have
created numerous Max-10 enhancements (borders,
boxes, designs, clip art, etc.)
I was naturally curious when I saw Jeff's ad in CFDM
for a set of 8 new borders. I had to get a set.
Now, I have to tell you that Jeff Cho has done a
super job. These borders are professionally done.
The quality is second to none. I like his borders
even better than my own!
The instruction manual is easy to read and explains
everything clearly. =>
____________________________________________________
The price is only $10 and that includes shipping!
I give this product a 4 star rating. If you like to
use Max-10, you should absolutely get the set of
borders by Jeff Cho. (You might even want to get
some of my Max-10 stuff too, just so you can have it
all!)

PHOTON Frankly, I've never been very interested in computer
games of the arcade variety. However, as a Christ-
mas present for my fifth grade class, I ordered a
copy of PHOTON from Rick. When I received the disk,
I wanted to check it out before I took it to school.
I was absolutely amazed at the quality of this game.
It far surpasses any other game that I've seen for
ANY computer! My fifth graders have told me that it
is the best game they've ever played. Now they are
addicted to PHOTON! They love it!
The graphics are great; the animation is smooth; the
music and sound effects are all top-notch. The con-
cept of the game is brilliant. The game is really
challenging and a whole lot of fun to play.
(next page ->)
____________________________________________________
PHOTON challenges you to use logic to advance to
higher levels. Each level is like a maze. Your
goal is to find a safe path to the exit. To compli-
cate the situation, there are colored marbles which
are in constant motion. The marbles' paths are
controlled by blocks which you have the ability to
move. Oh, you should know that if you touch the
marbles, they can drain all your energy.
In addition, there are pink "plasma-droid" creatures
which will chase after you and destroy you if given
the opportunity. Fortunately, these creatures also
have an aversion to the marbles.
(next page ->)
____________________________________________________
What I really like about this game is that it makes
you think. It is not the typical shoot'em up type
arcade game that requires little or no thinking. On
the contrary, PHOTON asks the question, "Now how can
I possibly get out of this difficult situation?"
A few of the mazes are relatively easy to solve, but
most of them are real "humdingers"!
The only thing negative that I can possibly say
about PHOTON is that it comes on a copy protected
disk. I know that that was not Rick's choice. And
copy protection should not be a reason to refuse to
buy this fantastic game.
PHOTON is G-R-E-A-T!!! *=*

STOP COLOSSUS Colossus is a NEW text Adventure by friend, Ray
Berney. It requires a 128K CoCo 3, RGB monitor (CMP
monitor or TV displays slightly different colors),
and a disk drive.
It has a number of "nice touches" that everyone
will like - colorful screen (nice break from the old
black on green), a little intro-music, sounds, Save
feature (only one active at a time), and a list of
Verbs, and Nouns - during play, type-in and Enter
VERB, and then NOUN.
The command parsor (how you communicate with the
Adventure) is a standard verb-noun type, with a few
acceptable one-word (Verb) commands. Also, the first
four letters of any longer word may be used.
Moving around is accomplished by GOing a certain
direction - North, East, South, or West. =>
____________________________________________________
There are no "trick" paths. If you can move from
one room to another, then you can reverse direction
to return to a prior one. No possible directions or
paths are shown on screen. You just have to try them
to learn what's there. You WILL see the name of each
location, and any "visible" object(s) there.
LOOK at, EXAMine, and READ everything. There are
many helpful clues available. Of course, you have to
use a little imagination. There are "Death-Traps",
and "Red-Herrings" as well.
There are three separate areas in the Adventure -
The OPERATIONS CENTER (Start area), WASHINGTON D.C.,
and The COLOSSUS SITE. When you find a few required
items, and solve required problems, you'll be told
where to go, and/or what to do. Once that is done,
you will auto-move (one-way) to the next area. =>
____________________________________________________
BACKGROUND: Read the Diary. Colossus is an all
Knowing, Powerful, Master Computer that completely
controls mankind - well, almost!
YOUR TASK: Find Colossus, and TURN IT OFF!
The auto-finish is a neat display of graphics,
sounds, and messages. You'll be Congratulated, and
your total number of "Turns" to solve the Adventure
will be shown (along with "Wasted" ones as well).
This EXECELLENT Adventure is available directly
from Ray. Send a blank disk, a letter-packet to
your address, and enough postage for two ounces.

FRACTALS/WYSS I would like to know if there is a limit to the
number of granules the program will let you save to
disk. I have made several enlargments that would
not save. I have SAVEd some that used 9 grans, but
none with 10. Some of the failed ones were on empty
disks except for the files used to make the program
work.
I like to watch the enlargements without erasing the
screen. It is like Stuart said, "some numbers make
the program crash with Julia sets."

IS 40 TRACK BETTER? I don't have 40 track unless I run a program to
aid me. This program cannot be used while I'm using
Max 3 or Max 10, because (I guess) the cassette port
is required. I've had thoughts of making the change,
conversion, or whatever to 40 tracks. I did some
checking through the CoCo Registry and note that
most who contibute CoCo Max 3 work, or work with Max
10, seem to operate with 35 tracks. Others? Maybe
they have two machines. Does going to 40 tracks in
any way prevent using Max 10 or Max 3? I didn't
check all. Thanks.

IS IT THE CPU OR IS IT THE RAM ? A few Months ago I fired up my CoCo and guess
want happened? A BLANK SCREEN!!! OK I shut down and
tried it again. This time I got a screen of all
kinds of graphic's and letters and numbers.
This went on for a few minutes off on off on etc.
I didn't want to believe I had a problem, but I
knew I did!!
Almost everywhere I read this means the CPU is
gone. My findings are that this is not true!!!
I'm no computer Tech, but I do know that RAM is
very important in the workings of the computer.
As I understand it our CoCo's can not run without
it. In the 128K CoCo there are four RAM chips and
these little guys plug in sockets. =>
____________________________________________________
As you know the contacts of anything that plugs in
can become dirty. So what I did was remove the four
RAM chips and when I replaced them I put them back
in different sockets. Example I put 4 where 1 was,
3 where 2 was, 2 where 3 was, and 1 where 4 was.
I felt that if one of these chips were gone the
problem would show up somewhere else, and then I
would know that a RAM chip was at fault. Maybe,
maybe not??
AS it turned out, my CoCo has been running great
ever since.
Be careful if you do this. Be sure to ground your-
self, the circuit board, and the ram chip. =>
____________________________________________________
I did this by placing the open CoCo on a large
piece of aluminum foil with one end of a wire
clipped to the foil and the other end of the wire
clipped to a water pipe. Next, a wire clipped to the
foil and the other end clipped to the metal box next
to the RAMs. Then when doing the job always keeping
both arms or elbows on the foil. Place the RAMs on
the foil. Never touch a RAM unless both arms or
elbows are on the foil.

When replying to a fellow CFDM member I usually
read thru Rick's entire CFDM disk and (HARDCOPY) to
my printer the article/s that I'm going to try and
answer. When I'm thru reading all that all I will
have to do CLEAR my COCO's memory, LOAD my CFDM

Reply: To Terry Stafford SORRY: Terry but I could not find the computer
chip that you listed in the CFDM issue #36 TCC1014

I called the local Radio Shack store here in
Phoenix, Arizona to see if I could still buy the
chip that you were looking for. They called me back
several hours later to say that this chip was no
longer available thru The Tandy Corporation.
But there must be some electronics store/company/
corporation or CFDM member that has the chip that
you are looking for.
Tomorrow: I will start calling around to the other
computer businesses here in Phoenix, Arizona to see
if the chip in question is still available if I find
one I will let you know (PRONTO).
