CHRISTMAS CARD PROJECT III One of the most popular participatory activities
sponsored by CFDM has been our two CHRISTMAS CARD
PROJECTS. It has been so popular that we'll do it
again this year! I hope you'll participate.
Here's how we've introduced the project before:
"It appears there's a lot of communication going on
among the members of CFDM. And that's great! One
of our most popular sections is the FAMILY TREE. And
many of you have commented that you enjoy finding
out about other Cocoists.
Sharing, communication, and participation will keep
us strong. So here's a simple idea, with only a
small amount of commitment required, which will =>
____________________________________________________
give each of us a chance to strengthen our bond and
let each feel a little cheer at the special season
that is fast approaching!
The project consists of sending a Friend a Christmas
or seasons greeting card. In return you will receive
a card from a different Friend. If you would like to
participate, just send me a post card with your name
and address printed clearly on the back side. Also
print "HOLIDAY", to indicate that you would like to
participate.
When issue #34 goes out, in November, I'll place
your card in the mailer of another Friend who has
returned a card. (If I receive your card after that
mailing, I'll send it with #35 in December.) =>
____________________________________________________
WHEN YOU GET THE CARD WITH THE ADDRESS, SEND A
GREETINGS CARD TO THE FRIEND WHOSE NAME IS ON THE
CARD.
>> PLEASE DON'T ENTER THIS PROJECT IF YOU ARE NOT
PREPARED TO BOTH SEND AND RECEIVE A CHRISTMAS OR
HOLIDAY GREETING CARD! <<
HERE'S HOPING FOR A GREAT RESPONSE!!"
PS About 25% of our Friends participated (enjoyed!)
last year's project. SHOW YOU CARE! PARTICIPATE!

EQUIPMENT DONATION..APPRECIATED! Rick! (I like that "!" ..Rick)
I received your letter and appreciate your thought-
fulness in letting me know that the package went
right thru to where it belongs.
As I said in my original letter; you make the
decisions on what you want to do with the stuff I
sent you. You are doing a good job keeping an
interest in our little (but powerful) computer. You
can figure out anything you wish with all of it.
....I just got home from sending Keiran Kenny a used
single 35 track disk drive. Figured he could use it
or if nothing else for parts, if the 110 volt
situation is a problem for him over there. =>
____________________________________________________
It will take about 3-4 weeks to reach him but I sent
a letter telling him it's on it's way. Hope he can
use it. I have 1 more of them left if you know of
someone who could use it.
I have a little 4-Color Graphic Printer someone
might be able to use. I have no ink cartridges for
it but maybe there is a source for getting them. If
someone wants one tell them to contact me. It will
be a "FREE-ZY" for them if they will pay the
freight.

RICK: Arthur I couldn't decide how to include your
great offers and tell about your previous donation,
so I just put in the whole letter.
Arthur refers to a package of neat CoCo stuff he
recently sent to me. Since the decision of how to
dispose of it seems to be in my hands...I've decided
to make it a special auction package in Phone Fest 4
and the proceeds will be deposited in the CoCo 3
Emulator Escrow Bounty Fund.
Thanks Arthur for making this possible!!!!!!!!!!

| Magnets
and Monitors Two's Complement: What it is. What is a VARPTR? |
| Back to top |
Magnets and Monitors The other day I was playing one of my favorite games
(DUNGEONS OF DAGGORATH) and was doing remarkably
well. I decided I'd keep the tape eraser handy in
case I wanted to make a quick save and without
thinking I set it on top of my monitor. I looked at
the screen and wondered what was going on: the
picture was all distorted. I scratched my head for
a while before I realized that the picture seemed to
be dragged toward the magnet. (tape erasers are
magnetic!!) I removed the eraser from my monitor and
the picture resumed normal proportions. However,
there was a bright blue splotch in the middle of the
screen. I was mortified!!!. I turned off the CoCo
and my RGB monitor and wandered around worried. A
few hours later out of curiosity I turned things on
again and I was very relieved to discover that =>
____________________________________________________
everything was all right! My advice to anyone who is
ever tempted to sit a magnet on a monitor or TV is:
especially if you do not want the anxiety of
wondering if you goofed up your monitor!!!!
=*
|
Two's Complement: What it is. As I mentioned in the article "'Piping' with DECB",
two's complement is a way of representing negative
numbers in binary. This is called signed binary. In
signed binary, the most significant bit is the sign
bit. In the case of an eight bit number, this would
be bit 7 (the eighth bit). If the sign bit is a one
then the number is negative. If the sign bit is 0,
then the number is positive. The range of numbers
that can be represented with eight bits is -128 to
+127.
To compute the two's complement value of a negative
number, we take the absolute value of the number and
complement (invert) all bits and then add one to
this result. That is why it is called two's
complement. Let's look at an example, say, -2. The
absolute value would of course be two (we just =>
____________________________________________________
ignore the sign to get the absolute value). In
binary, two is: 00000010, we then complement it
(change all one's to 0's and vice versa) and it
becomes: 11111101, next we add one to the result:
11111101
+00000001
---------
11111110 , this then, is the two's complement
value for -2. It is equal to 254 in
decimal, or $FE in hexadecimal. As you
can see, bit seven is high, so the
number is negative. In unsigned binary,
the value 254 would be correct, however,
in signed binary, it is negative two.
You may be wondering, why is the range that can be
represented from -128 to +127, why not +128? =>
____________________________________________________
Well, let's look at 128. In binary it is: 10000000.
Notice that bit seven, the sign bit, is high, thus
this would be considered a negative number. The
highest positive number would be: 01111111. This is
equal to 127. Let's perform a two's complement on
128 just to see what would happen:
10000000 (128)
01111111 (invert it)
+ 00000001 (add one)
10000000 (we ended up with the same number!)
I have tried my best to explain this and I hope
that I have not confused anyone too much. If you
still do not understand this, drop me a line, and
I'll try to clarify. ROBERT ALLEN TURNER, POB 396,
DOUBLE SPRINGS, ALABAMA 35553-0396. =*

What is a VARPTR? Every variable used by your basic program is
kept track of in a variable table. Each entry in
this table is 7 bytes long. The first 2 bytes are
the variable name. If the variable is numeric, the
next 5 bytes are the actual data in floating-point
format. If the variable is a string, the next 5
bytes contain the length and a pointer to the ac-
tual location of the string data. When you use a
statement such as: A=VARPTR(A$), A will then con-
tain a pointer to the third byte of the variable
table entry for A$. You can use peeks and pokes to
access this data for your own purposes.
I don't know about floating-point data so I
will leave it up to basic to handle the math parts
of my programs, but I have had need to handle some
string variables involving foreign characters =>
____________________________________________________
that I could not enter from the keyboard. The
following is what I learned about strings.
The first byte pointed to by VARPTR is a
1-byte length field. Since the maximun number
that can be held in 1 byte is 255, this is the
maximun length of a string in basic. The state-
ment, LN=VARPTR(A$), will put a pointer to the
lenght of A$ in LN. If you poke something into
LN, you will change the length of A$. The state-
ment, V=PEEK((LN+2)*256) + PEEK(LN+3), will put a
pointer to the actual variable in V. If you poke
something into V, you will change the data in the
variable. The actual location of the variable will
vary, depending on how you specify the variable in
your program. The statement, A$="XXXXXXX" will put
the data inside the actual program storage area.=>
____________________________________________________
The statement, B$=A$ will place the actual data for
B$ in string space, which is separate from program
storage.
The program, VARPTR.BAS, will demonstrate some
of this. It creates a variable in the program area,
finds that variable and then changes it. List the
program both before and after you run it to see
what has happened to the variable.
What use is this? One use is to create a long
variable and then poke a m/l program into the var-
iable then save the program. The m/l program will
still be there when you load the program and it can
be exec'ed. Another use is to build a string one
byte at a time with INKEY$ without using concaten-
ation and losing time for garbage collection every
few minutes. =*

* STW-G FRACTALS *
Thanks to our good friend STUART WYSS-GALLIFENT
I have been able to enjoy making Fractals using his
original program FRACTALS/BAS in CFDM Issue #16 and
also his IMPROVED Program SFRACTAL/BAS that he sent
to me FREE! Most of these graphics were created us-
ing the original program.
The graphics MMF5 and MMF6 look the same but if
you look closely you will see that there is a little
more detail in the one that I ran at 20 'ITERATION'
instead of 16.
The ZOOMed in enlargement MMF5A and then a ZOOM
of it MMF5AA were both done at 100 iterations to pro
duce the DETAIL -- which also requires more granules
to store. These were all done using the MANDELBROT
equation.
The graphics that are in the MJ series were =>
____________________________________________________
all done with the JULIA numbers factored into the
equation.
These are all samples of my first attempts to
create Fractals that I would consider pleasing to
the eye.
I could only convert Fractals of less than 9
granules to the /NIB format and then to /CM3 to be
editted. I eliminated STUs CODE from the right hand
margin and added Initials and Date with a Border. I
also adjusted the color Palettes using CoCoMaxIII.
These cannot be converted back to /SQS and re-
viewed in the SFRACTAL Program. If anyone would like
the /SQS format of them just send me a blank disk.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed wat-
ching them develop on my CoCo Screen.

COCO HAS BEEN A LEARNING TOOL! Where did the time go? I'm about four months behind.
My twin daughters are getting ready to go off to
college. We leave for William & Mary tomorrow with
Juliana, and Sara leaves Sept. 9th for Long Island
University in South Hampton, Long Island. Juliana
will be taking International Studies and Russian
Studies; Sara, Marine Biology.
I am very proud of both of them. Juliana was first
in her class, and had the highest average ever
attained at Sparta High. Sara was third in her
class. Sara has a full scholarship and Juliana,
(who could have attended several top schools on a
full scholarship) chose her school on the basis of
course offerings and faculity. However, no
scholarship for non-Virginia students. =>

I'm telling you this because I believe that the use
of the CoCo had a lot to do with their success. They
have been using the CoCo since 1983. Sometimes it
was difficult to get to use it myself. They played
educational games, wrote stories, and just had fun.
Throughout high school they never wanted another
computer. I bought an Apple for them to use because
that is what they used in school. They'd rather use
the CoCo. I donated the Apple to the school. We had
no use for it. WHAT A LEARNING TOOL the CoCo has
been. TANDY blew it when they stopped supporting
the CoCo.
Now they are off to school and no CoCo. It's almost
mine. My youngest (13) still uses it a lot. =>

army my wife, Vivian, and I settled in Tucson, AZ.
I went to work for the Mercedes Benz auto dealer as
their parts manager for four years. Then worked for
the city of Tucson as Parts Dept. Supervisor.
In 1978 we decided that we would like to do a
little more travelling so we sold everything and for
a year we lived in a mobile trailer. After coming to
San Antonio, we decided to stay put.
I have enjoyed being here in San Antonio as the
golfing weather is great and the weather hasn't =>

WHAT IS THAT "ATARI"
THING? And the lady at the church sale screwed up her
face and said "Its got 9 game cartridges and Radio
Shack said all you need is a cable to your T.V.set."
So my wife Helen said "Buy it for our grandson."
That was a little over two years ago. It was twelve
dollars.
Hi, my name is Bob Nicholson, and my wife and I
live on a small island off the west coast of Canada,
about one hundred miles north of Seattle. I'm 61 and
retired, we have a married daughter living on our
island, and a married son in Port St Lucie, Florida.
We also have 5 grandchildren (here and there).
That 16k CoCo has aquired some relatives too, a
64k, a CoCo III, another with 512, 2 CM8 monitors, a
501 double, 502 double, Ados3, a 440 Tandy printer,
and a lot of bargains from CoColand exiters =>

With all the stuff I've accumulated, I should
know something, but the learning is very slow; the
enjoyment level, however, is very high.
I've spent most of my life in the electric sign
business, started in Vancouver B.C., moved to
Sacramento Calif., lived there for 12 years, then
moved to Saltspring island B.C. (pop. 7500) and have
lived here for 18 years. During that time I managed
a local hardware store.
Prior to CoCo, I'd never touched a computer, so I
am learning very slowly, there is another fellow
here who had a CoCo, but lost interest when he went
to IBM. I have had hobbies before, and know how fast
money can vanish on them, so I'm learning and having
fun, what could be better. The tough part is not
being able to ask someone here, so thank you Rick=>

for this fellowship. My island is about halfway
between Vancouver and Victoria B.C., the ferry
service is very good so when I get off island I
prowl the second hand stores looking for the Tandy

situation, and would like to write, I'd love to hear
from you, and will get back to you ASAP.

Northwest Two man COCO-FEST BEN WALKER'S TRUISMS <g> CFDM Subscription Increase? COCO EMULATOR FUND UPDATE COCO2 EMULATOR DEMO |
| Back to top |
1st Northwest Two man COCO-FEST I have been given the task of reporting on our
recent 1st Annual Northwest Two Man COCO Fest held
in the metropolis? of Kellogg, Idaho. The other
member, namely RAY BERNEY arrived and was waiting
on my door step,(I'm not kiddin either) on Saturday
the 11th of June, he had announced his arrival by
unscrewing my porch light that I had forgot to turn
off on the way to work! After a hand shake, we had
a informal lunch, and I mean really informal, as I
have been batching since 4 May, we devoured some
sandwichs and IMMEDIATELY went to my COCO room and
dived into the COCO-ZONE, we both commented that we
would have to make the Fest the best we could do
without the presence of BOB BRUTKO, who couldn't
make it because Daddy KODAK is sending him to some
more schooling this summer. =>
____________________________________________________
After 3.5 hours we shut down and went out to
dinner, Mac's treat! When we returned the fun began
when RAY crashed my COCO, GOOD FRIEND HUH?, Well,
Ray tore down the COCO and we vacuumed it all out
and checked all connections, PROGNOSIS #1: IF RAY
BERNEY COMES TO VISIT YOU,KEEP HIM AWAY FROM COCO!
PROGNOSIS #2: (ACTUALITY) COLD SOLDER JOINT ON THE
MASTER POWER SWITCH! We were up and running in about
20 minutes, I learned some new neat things about my
COCO, and also finally met a CFDM Friend in person
instead of disk mail! All in all the COCO Fest went
great, EXCEPT FOR RAY CRASHING MY COCO! Chuckle!!
We will probably have another MINI NW COCO FEST next
year if not sooner!
=>
____________________________________________________
Ray left for home Sunday at 3'ish, and once again
old Mac was left in solitude with his COCO! No I
would like to put in a litte glitch for Ray's CFDM
patches! Guys and Gals they really are worth the
small sum of $7.00, the patch is 3 1/2 by 4 1/4 in
size and with the CFDM logo in vivid color they
make an excellent patch to show your true colours,
I realize that he needs Money Orders for the sale,
and can't take personal checks, but what the hey,
Ray has about 65 or 70 of them! Not to speak of the
money he invested for the patches. His address is
in Issue #27 and #28, Order a Patch!

CFDM Subscription Increase? When the United States Postal Service increases the first class rate from 29 cents to 32 cents, will Rick be forced to increase the subscription rate as well or can he keep costs down? I'm asking that ALL the Friends out there who are concerned like I am to put in their two cents worth in. I feel Rick WILL have to increase the subscription rate, backorder issue prices and the UNBLIEVEABLE offers. It will have to come one day and I'm trying to warn people about the increasing costs to everybody. What do you say, Mac, Stu, H. Allen, George Q., R.A.T., Norm, G. Moll, W. Astle, Chai, Keiran, Bennett, Sternett, T. Simons, Moenich, J.R.? => ____________________________________________________ ----- RICK: Ray asks some of the most intriguing questions doesn't he? Well Ray, if you hadn't mentioned it, I never would have thought about it! So when the postal rates go up we'll raise the rate of all my products by 100%. That way we will just get over all that pain now and not have to increase the costs 10 to 15 percent at a time! Now how's that for creative business thinking? Now....I'm just kidding! The prices of my products will not go up..and that's that! While we're talking about it, let me say that I feel we have the best of about everything at Rick's Computer Enterprise. We have the best products, the best prices, AND........ THE BEST FRIENDS. LET'S KEEP IT THAT WAY!! =* |

COCO2 EMULATOR DEMO During my recent visit to the HOME of CFDM, RICK
did a DEMO of the COCO2 EMULATOR - it was fasinating
to see his PC (used for business) convert to a CoCo
Screen and then provide a MENU System that allowed
him to access the Hard Drive that contained programs
that he had previously loaded. Under GAMES he was
able to bring to screen one of my old favorites PIPE
LINE from THE RAINBOW Magazine. It was one that I
had spent time to include 'INSTRUCTIONS' and also a
Graphic Start-up Screen created with Pipes and Sound
all done in BASIC.
JEFF VAVASOUR certainly has the talent to create
an EMULATOR for the PC to run our COCO3 programs and
we should do everything possible to encourage him to
complete his efforts in this area. I would encourage
everyone make a contribution to the BOUNTY ESCROW =>

just as soon as possible.
I have 31 Disk Boxes filled with Programs that I
enjoy and would hate to have my CoCos go down due to
old age and then not be able to access them!
If you have access to a PC and have purchased
the COCO2 EMULATOR, you should share your experience
in its performance so that JEFF can make any needed
improvements in his latest efforts.

TO MY DEAR CFDM FRIENDS Another issue of CFDM is almost complete! This one
includes Bonus Disk #9. I hope you'll enjoy it!
There's plenty in this issue, although there are a
few granules free on each Program/Side.
Schools back in full swing now. I must say it's been
very smooth so far. It's not often I've been able to
say that, so I'll just enjoy it while I can!!
It's been a very busy month and there's no let up in
sight. In a couple of weeks Donna, Kristin, Kasey,
Kayla, and I will be heading for Atlanta and the
Atlanta Fest. I'm expecting to see some CFDM Friends
I've never seen before. Terry Simons, for one, has
been announcing his travel plans for a couple of
months now. John Daniels should also be =>

returning for at least his third in a row. I'm sure
they'll be others too.
Then in November (the 12th) we'll be hosting the
biggest Phone Fest ever! You'll find a catalog of
the items and information with this disk. I hope
you'll make every effort to attend (by phone that
is). This will probably be our last until at least
next summer vacation.
As you'll notice in the FORUM, the CoCo 3 Emulator
Escrow Bounty Fund is coming along very nicely. If
every Friend donated $1.50, we'd meet our goal. The
donations we've received have been larger than that,
of course, and the special auction items donated by
Arthur Weisberg should certainly help. Thanks Art!=>

* COCO REGISTRY ->EXCELLENT * RICK:
The COCO REGISTRY disk arrived yesterday, Aug.
14th and I've had a few minutes to try it out.
I found that we have 26 FRIENDS who have a DIG-
ITIZER -- so we should be seeing more digitized pic-
tures in the future!
I was very interested in seeing how many run at
40TR versus 35TR -- more than half! 146 out of 262!
I have stayed away from it, but plan to start using
40TR for all of my back-up disks inorder to save the
file space. Maybe if I get used to using it I will
switch from 35TR to 40TR?
My next interest was as to those that have HARD
DRIVES -- WOW! -- 51. In this area I'm sure that a
lot of us could use some TECHNICAL advice. Maybe an
Article by a FRIEND? Keep them coming, Godfrey =*

CFDM..BIT BY THE DRAGON! ...I'm enclosing copies of the last four issues of
UP-2-DATE.....You'll see on one of the issues....
I've included a rewrite for the Dragon of your BYTE
tutorial from an early CFDM. I hope you don't mind
me using it, but it was so relevant to the article
on the FAT (File Allocation Table-Dragon equivalent
of the GAT) in the same issue.
I must say I look forward to receiving CFDM every
month and always find lots of highly interesting
articles and programs. I'm so pushed for time most
of the while that I don't get as much opportunity as
I would like to really absorb some of the programs.
You can always learn from other people's work and if
you don't you're either a fool, or you're wasting
your time and I hate wasting time. Who was it =>

LIKES MANY FEATURES OF CFDM Dear Rick,
I am enclosing a check for $22. $12 for the CoCo
Registry disks and $10 for the development of the
CoCo III Emulator.
I want to say what a great program you had in Vol.
30 - DF3. Data Form III a database program by Jim
Bennett. This is so well done. With it you can set
up any number of database programs. I really like
the fact that when you want to print out your data,
you can set the baud rate, at this time right from
the screen. This is good programming. Also like
the idea of the CoCo Coloring Book (Godfrey Moll).
As always, I love the CFDM and HARDCOPY. =>

work you put into this for the rest of us. All the
best to you and your family.

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE REGISTRY I have enclosed a money order for $12 for the CoCo
Registry. I mailed in the completed registration
form when I received it. I was really impressed with
all the work that has obviously gone into the
creation of the Registry as outlined in your summary
advertisement.
In particular I am looking forward to seeing lists
of any remaining sources of supplies for the CoCo3.
I would like to acquire a Multi-Pak interface, a
mouse, and whatever the driver program required for
my Home Publisher disk which I purchased from Radio
Shack when I first got the computer. I can not get
the program to print to my DMP 132 Radio Shack
printer and I noted in an old Rainbow Magazine, the
gentleman from Ohio was advised that for FREE =>
____________________________________________________
(in the US) someone like myself who purchased the
Home Publisher program could get the driver program
for a DMP 132 by phoning the Tandy Express at (800)
321-3133. I can't access that number from here and
was wondering if you could phone this toll free
number for me and possibly through your connections
acquire me one of these driver programs.
Do you have access to an address for TANDY in the
US that I could write to.
- Harvey Driscoll Sr.

------
RICK: Harvey, I had no luck dailing the number you
gave. Does anyone have any information on the
TANDY Express line. I've heard there was such a
thing, but I've never had need to call. Or maybe
someone has the driver Harvey spoke about.
An address to write TANDY..that I don't have either.
Harvey, most of us have learned to live without
TANDY support and really don't call on them that
often!

REGISTRY RESPONSE! I enjoyed the Registry with my very own record
number, 0162. Very impressive. I have decided to
make use of it, especially the ads. The accounting
offer may be just what I am looking for.
Even though I may never use it, Jeff Vavasour's
emulator could be a boon for the CoCo, so I am
adding a small donation along with my order.
I have also decided to subscribe to Adventure
Survivors and Upgrade. Keep up the good work.
- Dale Heglin, MB, Canada
------
RICK: Thanks for the feedback Dale! I happy to hear
the ads section of the Registry will be used! =*

RENEWAL TIME Rick, here is a money order to renew 6 months of
disk, and one year of hardcopy, also my personal
thanks for issues past. I'm sorry I'm late but we
recently built a new home, moved in a few weeks ago
and have been busy inside and out, so no time for
CoCo. Did manage to read the last two issues and am
enclosing $5.00 for the CoCo-PC fund.
Keep up the good work, I know that I speak for
others like me, lost in the boonies, clinging to
this thread to the CoCo world, and we say -
Thank You
Bob Nicholson

Re: Coco-Accountant 3 I just spent the day working on the COCO-Accountant
3 program. It is GREAT!! As you said in your review
in issue 31, it is very easy to use.
Even I tackled it without any problems. I only enter
ed transactions for 7 1/2 months- Pest Control bus-
iness and my personal checkbook! What a challenge!
It is neat how easily it sorts information out.
Quickly sorts, prints separate account summarys;
even spreadsheet for a year printed quickly. The new
STAR printer is fantastic. Of course I still have a
lot to learn. Next I will tackle checkbook
reconciliation. Another day!!
Rick: Sorry about my issue 31. Don't know what =>

Also enclosed is $12.00 for your COCO Registry. I am
excited about receiving my first issue.

Single Drive Article Copies Rick, when reading articles in CFDM, I at times want
to immediately write a response. It seems that I
cannot insert my CFDM template and have the computer
write my article on the template without the direct-
ory of the current CFDM disk being written on the
template. Can you alter the program so that single
drive users like myself can do what I want to do?
-----
RICK: Steve this could be accomplished but....the
CUTILS program is very big and consists of more than
five (I really can't remember how many source files
there are) which have to be fit together carefully.
To add a routine, even a small routine, is a very
difficult job. As you are know, I try to make =>
____________________________________________________
every byte count (NIB, compressed CFDM files, etc.)
and when I wrote CUTILS and even C.BAS, I filled
almost all of the disk memory and the 128K memory
that is standard to CFDM.
I'm not saying it can't be done...it would be a
difficult undertaking. (Especially at this time of
year. i.e. school is underway.)
I might suggest that you can make a copy of the CFDM
disk...load the entry you wish to comment on..use
Entry Writer to edit or add to it...then SAVE the
edited entry. WITH THIS SUGGESTION I RECOMMEND THAT
YOU USE THIS PROCEDURE WITH CARE...MANY CFDM DISKS
ARE NEARLY FULL.

To Rick To Rick, thanks for the hospitality on my visit to
the headquarters of CFDM. I enjoyed seeing you and
the family again. I look forward to seeing you at
the Atlanta COCOFEST this Oct.
John
To Everyone Else, if there is any way you can make
a trip to Liberty to visit Rick, I can recommend
it as a very enjoyable experience. I got to see a
little of what it takes to put together CFDM and
run the software business and I can't see how Rick
has time to do his "real" job as school principle!
I also got to see the infamous pool table that has
not been used for months now, at least I saw the
part that wasn't covered with COCO stuff.
John =>

RICK: Thanks John, it was great having you in our
home! And your reference to the "pool table" will
give folks an idea of how full it is! Actually the
"pool table" is a ping pong table. At least it was
the last time we saw the top of it!!

CoCofest-Pacific North West Rick, a brief report (second hand) on the fest, swap meet at Port Orchard Washington, on June 25th weekend. I'm not sure of all the facts but I got some information from Rodger Alexander, of the Bellingham OS-9 Users Group. Rodger indicated that this year the organizers found interest declining, and so decided to team up with a P.C. fest and swap meet. I had really wanted to go, but at the last moment, couldn't, and after talking to Rodger, found that I hadn't missed much. He said that there was very little CoCo stuff there, but there was "an older lady" (who apparently had just discovered the Color Computer) running around buying everything she could get her hands on. In Rodger's words "she was just as excited as we were ten years ago! I will be seeing him soon, and may have more to report, later=* |
Hymn Sing ! In Issue #24, Charles Gibson surprised me with
a sing-along program, "PUFF". I hadn't realized it
was something that could be done and I liked it a
lot. Inspired by his example, I wrote "HYMNSING",
which presents the words and music of two favorite
hymns: "God of Grace" and "God of Our Fathers". I
hope you like it. RUN"HYMNSING", on the program side

Kelly Freas bio
This article goes with the picture file called
HERETIC, a digitized reproduction of a piece of art-
work by Frank Kelly Freas entitled Heretic in a
Ballon.
Although Freas is one of the older fantasy artists,
and although he can look back upon thirty years of
experience as an illustrator, he has nevertheless
successfully managed to keep his work up-to-date.
Frank Kelly Freas, an American, was 28 years old
when he produced his first cover in November 1950:
it was for the science fiction magazine "Weird
Tales".
=>
____________________________________________________
Kelly Freas, who was born in New York, tried his
hand at a number of completely different jobs such
as engineering and medicine, before turning to art.
But his artistic talents also turned out to be quite
diverse: among other things, he concentrated on
photography, television commercials, he painted re-
ligious pictures for the order of St. Francis, and
Alfred E. Neumann for "Mad"-- and again and again
science fiction and fantasy.
One of his most spectacular commissions was that of
designing the badge for the first NASA Skylab and a
number of posters to popularize American space pro-
jects.
=>
____________________________________________________
It would of course be unthinkable to imagine an
artist of his stature without official recognition.
Frank Kelly Freas is a kind of regular customer
when, year after year, the World Science Fiction
Association award their "Hugo". So far he has re-
ceived this award ten times-- more often than any
other artist before him!
This bio synopsis and the reproduction of Freas'
Heretic in a Ballon were both found in the book en-
titled Masterpieces of Fantasy Art. Please note that
the digitizing process and my feeble attempts to
touch it up with CoCoMax III do not do justice to
the detail of the artist's work

library of Color Computer software, and so I wrote
this program for inclusion on the Color Computer 3
software diskettes which contain documentation. It
has several features, such as font selection, use
of HSCREEN 4 for display, and four column Menu &
DIRectory selection. The program supports both
diskette and cassette I/O, however, I do not have
the means to test the cassette I/O function yet.
That is one of the reasons that I have decided to
submit it to CFDM. Perhaps someone can test the
cassette reading function for me? The other reason
is to share it with the CoCoFriends. There are =>

four files which relate to this program, all of
which are on the program side of this diskette.
They are: "C3READER/BAS", which is the actual
program; "C3READER/DOC", which is the program
documentation; and two font files: "MAC/FNT" and
"FONT MAX/FNT". This program will allow selection
of any font files that may be present on the disk.
----------------------------------------------------
NOTE: DO NOT SELECT THE "BIG.FNT" DURING THE FONT
SELECTION PROCESS OF "C3READER.BAS". THAT FILE
IS FOR USE WITH THE "GEPLAN.BAS" PROGRAM.
"BIG.FNT" IS NOT A STANDARD COCO 3 HPRINT
FONT.

ADDRESSING LABELS This is a data base program that will let you create a file, sort the file, search the file, change records in the file & print the records on paper, mailing labels, regular labels or display the records on the screen. I used various colors in the different sections of the program. When adding records to the file, each field will be represented by a string of yellow. When the cursor is in the last position, the field is full. The sort that is used is a bubble sort that I modified. The sort keeps track of the last record changed, and on the next run through the records, it will stop sorting at that record because all records following it are in sequence. This speeds up the sort. => ____________________________________________________ This program will run on all versions of the COCO. It uses the high speed disk I/O routine by L. TODD KNUDSEN. It is set up for the DMP130 series printers Lines are commented to show where changes can be made. This program is named ADDRLBL. =* |
BASEBALL ANYONE? View text file associated with this article BBINDEX/BAS will give your printer a spring-training
workout! Baseball lovers can use this database/
program to trace the histories of their favorite
teams. Not too many people may know that today's
Atlanta Braves were the ORIGINAL Cincinnati Red-
Stockings, or that the Giants were once called the
Trojans. Looking for the original Mets?, check out
the listing for todays KC Royals!
BBINDEX is easy to use. The index sits at the
beginning of the program and the interface is at the
end. When you run the program there will be a short
introduction, press <ENTER> to get the interface
menu. The menu lists all current Major League Base-
ball team names. Choose the letter of the team whose
history you wish to trace. You will then be =>
____________________________________________________
asked if you would like a printout of the results.
Just hit yes or no. Make sure your printer is on-
line. Results print one line at a time on both the
printer and monitor. If you choose not to print out
you will just see the results on screen and then you
will be asked if you want to print the next results.
If you choose LL at the menu, you will see a listing
of all leagues having teams included in the index.
I've included the pro teams from the Negro leagues
that existed during the years of the color line, and
also included the Women's league that existed during
World War II as seen in the movie "A League of Their
Own".
Making this index involved much research. I've =>

even included teams that no longer exist or have
any current "ancestors". To find these teams and
what cities that they represented <LIST> the program
and scroll the teams by. When you see an interesting
entry that you would like to search, type <RUN>XXXX
(where XXXX is the line number). The program will
search the rest of the database, bring you back to
the interface, and then give you the results.

BASEBALL ANYONE? PART 2 I enjoy using this index to find obscure teams to
match against each other in conjunction with my
Baseball Encyclopedias and my Baseball ROM Pak.
Tandy's Baseball program is actually one of the
better baseball simulation programs ever written.
(Including Martin Lee's Baseball program from the
first "Rainbow Book of Simulations", which I
heartily endorse!) With the ROM Pak (or disk copy)
you are able to enter lineups and batting averages
and then have the teams play each other..or you
could choose to operate either team. I know there
are many fantasy league baseball fans out there who
would find these programs fascinating.
I've included the possibility of the Giants moving
this year. If they don't just edit their =>

San Francisco entry to read - GOTO 3540 -. Here's
a treat for the Rainbow (CFDM) staff, for the

I hope that people enjoy this program. I am working

basketball leagues as well. Feel free to call me

any). ENJOY!

DISASSEMBLER REVISITED Back in Issue #22 I presented a DISASSEMBLER. I have
since found a way to erase the need for a disk file
to hold the data. My new DISASSEMBLER does not
support saveing the output to a file, but it does
permit a printout.
On startup, it asks for the start address in HEX. It
assumes that you know hexadecimal since that is what
all numbers are output in. It then asks whether you
wish a printout. Just press <Y> or <N> at this
prompt and the program will proceed. I am working on
a way to translate the program into Machine Code but
the machine code version could be a long time in the
design stage. Some ideas I've had include disassem-
bling from a disk file and a choice of BAUD rates.
Maybe even a choice to replace garbage bytes with =>
____________________________________________________
FCB, FDB, FCC, or FCS instructions and converting
numbers into symbols. I may even design a routine to
provide EDTASM+ compatable source code. This may be
a load of wishful thinking, but it is worth a try.
In the mean time, enjoy my new version. It operates
a little faster since it does not need to access a
disk.
Just RUN "DISASM2.BAS"

FILE COPY/KILL HELPER I Like to go through my CFDM disk and transfer
certain files and programs to appropriate disks that
I have set up. When I noticed the features of the
"M.BAS" program in issue #28, I tried out the COPY
command. Since I have a single drive, guess what
happened when I copied a large file? It took about
8 swaps to accomplish the COPY! The program is
fairly large, and so there is not much memory left
for copying files.
So I decided to write a program especially made
for single drive users like myself. My goal was to
use less that 1 gran of disk space and keep the pro-
gram short enough to be able to copy large files. I
also wanted the program to require a few keystrokes
as possible. I believe that I have accomplished
that. --> =>
____________________________________________________
The main menu will give you 4 options: 1) COPY
1 or more files to another disk & KILL the file(s)
off the original disk. 2) COPY one or more files to
another disk. 3) Kill one or more files. 4) End.
Once you make your choice, you will be asked to give
the extention of the file(s) you want to copy and/or
kill. The screen will display files on the original
disk that have that extention. You will then enter
the # of the file that you want to copy and/or kill.
If you select all it will kill and/or copy all
files with that extention on your disk. Of course,
be extra careful when choosing to kill file(s).
Also, please note that the display of files is
limited to the 1st 30 files with the given exten-
tion. The screen will give swapping instructions.
As noted on the main menu, at any time break =>
____________________________________________________
<BREAK> to return to main menu, or to change the
extention of the file(s) you wish to work with.
When you kill a file, you will notice that that
filename will disappear from the screen display.
Also, you can edit out the '(REM) marker from line
15 if you wish to use this with 40 tracks.
Again, I will use this program to copy MUSIC and
GRAPHICS files from CFDM to designation disks, as
well as other types of programs or files. I hope
you can use this program. For questions, send a
SASE to the address listed on the program. I also
welcome any suggestions for improvement. BASIC pro-
graming is one of my favorite hobbies.

GE-Planner v1.0 GE-Planner is a program which allows you to schedule
special dates throughout the year by assigning a
label to a color code. You can mark those dates by
selecting that color and then clicking in the appro-
priate spot on the calendar. You might choose to
mark such events such as vacations & seminars. GE-
Planner provides as uncluttered way to view the year
at a glance. You may plan ahead until 1999. GE-
Planner also allows you to load and save this data
to disk.
GE-Planner operates within the GrafExpress enviro-
ment. This allows for extremely fast collision
checking & screen copying, even while programming in
basic. GE-Planner is completely mouse driven. There
are no commands to remember and no special order =>
____________________________________________________
to follow in using the program. All functions are
available at all times, so go ahead and feel it out.
Instructions are not necessary. Enjoy!!!
You will need to copy the following files to a new
disk: GE16/BIN, BIG/FNT, GEPLAN/BAS, & GEPLAN/CHN.
Hardware requirements: 512K RAM & HI RES mouse.
NOTE: Each save will use 10 grans of disk space. Do
not include an extension or drive number in your
filename. GE-Planner has no disk error protection.
If you get a disk error, simply rerun GEPLAN/BAS.
WARNING: GrafExpress picture saves are not ADOS 3
compatible, at least not my version (v1.001). =>
____________________________________________________
I Believe the GgrafExpress system has a lot of po-
tential to bring new and innovative programs to the
CoCo community. Especially through the talented
programmers in CFDM. I am very much a novice pro-
grammer. With the many expert programmers in CFDM,
GrafExpress programs could really fly! Although GE-
Planner is a good example, it barely scratches the
surface of what could be done through GrafExpress.
Also graphics drawing was done the hard way (within
the program) to save space in CFDM. GrafExpress is
available through Rick's and includes both the 16 &
256 color versions, a well written 48 page manual, &
many application & demo programs. Any questions,
comments or suggestions can be directed to CFDM or:

HIDDEN TREASURE Recently, I learned that a famous explorer who also
happened to be an avid CoCo-ist discovered the lo-
cation of a hidden treasure of inestimable value.
Unfortunately, he disappeared before he could reveal
his discovery to the world. However, it was rumored
that he wrote a computer program which held the se-
cret to the treasure's location.
Now, by a stroke of fate, I have come across the
very program which tells where the treasure is hid-
den. Unfortunately, some evil-minded villain has
altered this program so that it no longer works cor-
rectly.
I am submitting this program to Rick in hopes that
=>

one of the CoCo Friends will be able to fix the pro-
gram so it will tell us where the treasure is.
The program is titled "TREASURE". It is written in
BASIC and has REM statements which explain the parts
of the program. LOAD "TREASURE", try to RUN it, and
then LIST it to see if you can find out how to make
the program work properly so that it will reveal
where the treasure is located.
GOOD LUCK!!!

PAGER The PAGER doesn't beep you, it reformats text into
two or three columns and outputs it one page at a
time onto separate files. To use it just edit a
text file using a word processor with the left
margin set to zero and the right margin set to one
third the width of the pages you want to create.
SAVE it to an ASCII disk file.
Next RUN the PAGER and answer the questions about
your text file (the input file), such as what column
width? (This is the right margin--or about 25 if you
want a file 80 characters wide with three columns
and two spaces between the columns). When the PAGER
is done doing it's thing you'll have separate files
named "PAGE 1.DAT", "PAGE 2.DAT", etc. Use these
files for "MAX10" OR "CCIII PAGES". =>

PIXBLOX - a simple jigsaw
I am still as fascinated by the potential in Mike Hoke's SUPERPUT3 as I was when it first appeared. I am grateful for it too because I have been going through a period when I just couldn't think of a subject to write a program about. My familiarisation experiments with SP3 produced a few programs worth submitting to CFDM. PIXBLOX begins with a variation of NIBLOADR. En- ter the name of a /NIB file and when it is loaded the picture will be divided into twelve blocks. Press a key and the SP3 entries in the loop in lines 480 to 580 will GET and PUT pairs of blocks so that they swap positions on the screen. There may be an inevitable delay while lines 510, 540 and 570 en- sure that no swap is repeated. But when six swaps have been effected, a cursor=> ____________________________________________________ will appear flashing in block 2 of the second row. The cursor (line 720) is also an SP3 product: a 3 x 3 square of random colors 0 to 7. The 3 x 3 background is GOT before the cursor flashes on and PUT back in place when it flashes off. The cursor remains visible against any background. Move the cursor with the arrow keys to a block and press 1. Move to another block, press 2, and the blocks will swap positions. Continue until the pic- ture is restored. Press CLEAR to delete the cursor. Then press any key to end the program. The BREAK key is disabled by the POKE41598,255 in line 10, but you can also press SHIFT-BREAK to end the program. However you end the program the BREAK key is re- enabled and operating speed returns to normal. => ____________________________________________________ To run PIXBLOX you need NIBLOADR/BIN, SP3/BIN and a suitable /NIB picture file on the same disk. If you use a BOOT utility on your disks, you may find that it will not execute PIXBLOX. If so, just run the program direct from the disk. Also, you may experience difficulty if you run the program with ADOS3 on board. =* |
STRINGART 11 I have only one comment on STRINGART11 -- I didn't
make up the title. It was taken right from the book,
along with the design.

** HOOKED ON FRACTALS! ** I can't believe all the FUN I've been missing
out on by not trying STUART WYSS-GALLIFENT'S pro-
gram "FRACTALS/BAS" as published in CFDM ISSUE #16,
followed by his FREE offer of Programs in ISSUE #21,
which included his updated version "SFRACTAL/BAS".
This will be a Preliminary Review as I have not
had enough time to try but one-third of the capab-
ilites offered by his SUPERB Programming. FRACTALS
operates using a single pixel review moving on the Y
axis -- seems to take a little longer than SFRACTAL,
which operates with a CUBE of 64 pixels and does a
16 pixel quadrant at a time very quickly. There are
by my calculation 59,904 pixels or dots of color to
be filled in SFRACTAL and 61,056 dots for FRACTALS
as STU has reserved space along the right border to
record the data about the fractal inorder to =>
____________________________________________________
permit the luxury of stopping and starting a fractal
which is very handy due to the time needed to compl-
ete a detailed one.
One nice feature about FRACTALS is that a pic-
ture is saved in the /NIB format, which can easily
be converted to /CM3 and EDITed in CoCoMaxIII.
Another handy feature is the ENLARGEMENT part
of the program, which provided a neat little picture
in the lower corner of the section selected.
STU sent excellent INSTRUCTIONS with SFRACTAL,
EIGHT PAGES of detailed information on each of the
programs functions -- need to read carefully and try
out his recommended values for MANDELBROT and JULIA
sets -- yielding FRACTALs that mesmerized me as they
developed on the screen and when you color cycle the
fractal it like a kaleidescope of colors pouring =>
____________________________________________________
as if in the molten stage. I found that it was very
easy to change the 16 PALETTES to give combinations
of color to enhance a fractal. LINE 1710 in FRACTALS
and LINEs 124-127 in SFRACTAL.
STU explains why he went to a differnt compres-
sion program in SFRACTAL and that only fractals of 9
or less granules will be converted to /NIB format.
With a VIEWer Program we will still be able to
do a FRACTAL SHOW -- *HINT*HINT* of very complicated
graphics -- a delight to see!
I did have trouble with format conversions hav-
ing the palette colors messed up - easy to change in
the CM3 format -- need help with /NIB.
I plan to submit some of my early FRACTALS to
RICK and hope to see some from others in the future!

A Messed-up CoCo 3 Does anybody know of someone who has the skills
and is willing to attempt to repair a messed-up
CoCo 3? I have one that I attempted to install 512K
in, but it wouldn't work afterward. I called the
supplier and got permission to return the upgrade to
them, and did so. They said it was o.k. and returned
it. In the meantime, I took the CoCo3 to Radio Shack
to check it out. They said it was o.k., but it
wouldn't work either with the original or the up-
graded memory in it. In short, it doesn't work at
all, while both the machine itself and the upgrade
have been certified o.k. by experts. Maybe one or
the other of them, or both, was mistaken? Maybe I
overlooked something? In any case, if there is any-
one out there who is willing to tackle it, or knows
somebody who would, for reasonable payment, =>

GIF to CM3 conversions In issue #30, Dann McConnell and Charlie Round
asked about converting GIF graphic files to CM3
format.
I use a program called GIF.BIN. This program will
allow you to view GIF's and then convert them to
.MGE, .HRS, or .VEF files. The MGE files can be
converted to .CM3 files by using the TRANSLATE
program supplied with CM3, or NUTRANS from Jumpin
Jim's Art Disk. Or you can convert the .MGE's to
.CLP files for use in MAX-10 with PIXTRANS from
MAX-10. And GIF.BIN will keep the PALETTES in tact.
Of course, all of your GIF's need to be on a CoCo
formatted disk before you can do this. I accomplish
this by using ULTIMATERM and a NULL Modem cable
between my CoCo3 and my Laptop. I just download all
the GIF's to my CoCo3 disk. After that, it is ==>
____________________________________________________
just a matter of LOADing GIF.BIN and converting your
GIF's to .MGE's.
If you just want to view you GIF's on you CoCo3, I
suggest you use a program called The Projector.
This program allows the viewing of several graphic
formats. Including CM3, MGE, IMG, GIF, VEF and
others. This program does not have provision for
saving pictures though. You can press RESET to exit
the program and then try to convert the picture
still in memory. But, you lose the palette doing it
this way.
If you would like the two programs mentioned,
GIF.BIN and The Projector, send me a postcard with
your name and address and I will send you a disk
with the programs along with a couple of sample GIF
files. I will also be glad to transfer ==>
____________________________________________________
and / or convert any GIF files you wish.
One last note, there are many different GIF
formats and not all will convert properly.

Old Drives.... In issue #30, John Daniels said that he had
purchased a Model 1 computer.
The drives are 35 track drives and are basicaly the
same drives that Radio Shack originally sold for use
on the CoCo 1. I have 2 that I have been using for
three years now on my CoCo 1 with no problems.
As for the video display, there are only three pins
used in the din plug.
Pin # 1 -- +5 Volts supplied by the computer
Pin # 4 -- Composite video
Pin # 5 -- Ground
There is no audio circuit in the monitor since the
Model 1 did not have sound capabilities.
Here is a little bit of trivia for you Trekkies==>

Reply: To ROM-PAK TRANSFERS... To: Godfery J. Moll & Robert Countant
If you have a copy The Rainbow On Disk December
1987 issue page #152, you will find an RSDOS Basic
program by. the name of "PAXFER.BAS". Don't forget
to refer to the magazine for more information.
If you have a copy of The T&D Software Utility #1
disk, you will find two programs by the names of
"ROMBACK" and "ROMPACK". This T&D Software issue
will not come with documention. I know because I
bought one several years ago. If you have a copy of
The T&D Software issue #20 Febuary 1984, you will
find a program by the name of "ROM COPY". This
T&D Software issue will come with documention. I
know because I have bought quite a few of the
T&D Software products but not this specific one. =>

KEIRAN KENNY was wondering about primary colors. I
may be able to explain:
RED, YELLOW and BLUE are used when mixing paints or
any kinds of dyes or pigments. They involve the sub-
tractive theory of light (sorry about the PHYSICS)
while shining colored lights requires RED, GREEN and
BLUE. This is the additive theory of light and is
the method used by television sets and RGB monitors.
Any physics text which deals with light should clear
