Red Rock, Monument Valley This is a picture from Mounument Valley,
Arizona. This particular area of Monument Valley
is called the "Red Rock" area. It is located in
the northeastern area of Arizona up near the
Utah and Arizona border. This scene is interesting
because some of the rock formations are in the
shadows, some in the sunshine, and some are in the
haze. The effect of the sky on the ground is
important to see when it comes time to paint the
shadows in according to what the sky dictates. I
hope you enjoy the picture and hope to get into
other states soon for drawing and painting. It
takes a while to locate good pictures of these
given areas. See you next time from another
state location.

I NO ENDORSEMENT by Mike Lewis <g> Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! THE COCO REGISTRY THE NEXT STEP..COCO 3 EMULATOR |
| Back to top |
COCOCTOPUS I "COCOCTOPUS" is a combination of the words COCO and OCTOPUS. It's a CoCo which has several "arms" or connections to "real world" mechanisms. I surprise myself that I, the king of the hardware klutzes, am writing on this subject. However, re- cently, I have become very interested in "real world connections" for the CoCo. It all began when I set up a CoCo burglar alarm system in my house a few months ago. Perhaps, because I am a real novice when it comes to electrical wiring, I can encourage other novices to try something different with your CoCo's too. If you're anything like me, you might just discover that you'll have a lot of fun teach- ing your CoCo how to become an octopus/control cen- ter in your home! => ____________________________________________________ This installment explains how to create a very sim- ple way to use your CoCo to monitor 1 or 2 electri- cal sensors or switches. I will explain how you can use your CoCo to detect an open door or window in 2 locations in your home. You will need an old joystick cable minus the joy- stick but with the plug end intact. You will also need 1 or 2 magnetic switches (Radio Shack cat# 49- 495 or 49-497) and a sufficient amount of wire to extend from your CoCo to each switch location and to return. I recommend Radio Shack 2 - conductor wire #278-1509 or #278-860 alarm wire. First, open the plug end of the joystick cable (you must slide the plastic cover back). Now, identify => ____________________________________________________ what color wires are attached to which pins. Now RUN the program titled "OCTOPUS" and follow the in- structions about how to do the wiring. It's really very simple! This is a very simple project that will demonstrate the basic technique. In future installments of "CO- COCTOPUS" I'll explain how to expand upon this capa- bility to do some very impressive tasks! One caution: NEVER power up your CoCo until after all connections have been made and make certain that all wiring is protected from power sources outside the CoCo by using insulated wiring only. "Today the home; tomorrow the world!" =*** |
Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! I had thought, as I told others, that a CFDM patch
would be a very sought-after prize! And a somewhat
challenging contest to win one would be an
inexpensive and fun way. But was I ever wrong!!
Not only was my overly high estimate of 20-40
entries incorrect, even my second guess of 10-20 was
grossly out-of-wack. By the 1st of April, I had only
received 4 completed entries. 3 of them were winners
fortunately. I have put an ad in CFDM announcing the
deadline of the contest and offering the rest of the
patches for sale. Maybe this will generate more
interest in the CFDM patches. I have been working
on another contest that has a better organization &
Grand Prize. It will be a 1-month type. This was
written on 4/6/94, so I have 71 CFDM patches left.
=>

I wonder how many outside U.S.A. will enter my OP
PATCH contest. You have until the end of April to
send me your correctly completed entries. My
address is: Ray Berney

THE COCO REGISTRY Lately CFDM has brought you at least two exciting new projects that I feel have been very worthwhile. Those were the Phone Fests and the news of the CoCo2 Emulator by Jeff Vavasour. We hope to continue the former and support the latter to reality. In another entry in this section you'll find our "next step" in making the CoCo3 Emulator a real possiblity! But now I'm announcing a third exciting new project that I hope will be well received. This project I have named "The CoCo Registry". This registry will take the form of a database of all (or at least as many as will respond) CoCoist. It could contain the names, addresses, phone numbers, systems data, and much other information about each of those who register. The database will come on disk and => ____________________________________________________ will be driven by a machine language program which will allow the user to quickly search the database for names, phone numbers, city or state locations, etc. The database will be able to hold data on over 1000 members. It will be continually updated as new information comes in and an updated disk will be made available about 3 times per year. I believe the product will be offered at a nominal cost. I'm suggesting $5 for the disk or get the initial disk and the next 2 updates for $12. I plan on including features that will allow you to search for everyone living in a certain state, city, or country. This would be a good way to find others living near you. You will also be able to find => ____________________________________________________ all members who own say a CoCo 1 or those who also own a PC or Apple computer. You'll also be able to find all members who belong to the different CoCo organizations such as MI&CC or the Atlanta Computer Society. You could also find everyone who has an interest in OS9, ADOS, MSDOS, or even emulators. I hope this project sounds interesting to you! And I ask that even though you may not want to buy a copy, that you will support the project by filling out the data form in the sleeve of this issue and send it in to me. It cost nothing to have your data included. It's projects like this that keep us ticking! Please participate. (ANY FEEDBACK WOULD BE APPRECIATED!) =* |
THE NEXT STEP..COCO 3 EMULATOR As you'll read in a letter from Loyal B. Gaskin in
the LETTERS section, we need a little incentive for
Jeff Vavasour to quickly respond to our desire for
a CoCo III Emulator. Loyal purposes a fund be set
up as an incentive for Jeff (or others).
In a recent letter I received from Jeff he states,
"...at the time the (my) TRS-80 Model I
Emulator was still very active and my
commercially marketed TRS-80 Model III/4
Emulator was in its infancy. Though both
of these other projects have subsided
somewhat, I am still unable to give the
CoCo project the time it needs, both due
to increased demands from my Ph.D.-
candidate research (in Physics) and my =>
____________________________________________________
upcoming wedding.....It is currently my
intention to use the CoCo II Emulator as
a prototype to solicit feedback on any
bugs and difficulities, using this
information to construct an improved
CoCo III Emulator when time permits."
This letter gives me hope that the project will
happen! But wouldn't it be nice to offer a little
incentive to Jeff (and appreciation).
I'm prepared to start our fund with a personal $100
donation. And..with every order during Phone Fest 3
I plan to donate $5 to the fund. This should give
us a good start towards a goal of at least $1000.
When that mark is met, I will communicate to =>
____________________________________________________
Jeff of the bounty that has been prepared. This will
let him know that there is a real desire for this
product!
If you would care to make a donation, ANY AMOUNT
WILL BE ACCEPTED AND APPRECIATED, please send it to
me with the instructions: Place this donation in the
CoCo III Emulator Bounty Escrow. I'll acknowledge
your donation with a letter/receipt and keep you
posted via CFDM how we're doing.
Thanks for your support in this most important event
in the history of the CoCo!

Dear Jeff,
I've read of your CoCo II Emulator in COCO FRIEND'S
DISK MAGAZINE. I believe a CoCo III Emulator would
be widely received and I want to encourage you to
make this project a reality. Thousands of CoCoists
were very disappointed when TANDY discontinued this
"last true home computer". Many of us are still
actively using our CoCo IIIs and are supporting a
number of organizations and publications which have
kept the spirit alive.
Please send me information of any further develop-
ments. Good luck in your work on the CoCo III
emulator.

6809 ASSEMBLY PROGRAMMING PT6 View text file associated with this article This is the last article of dry information. Next month, we are actually going to use assembly language for something practical. RUN"ASSEM6" will retrieve this month's text. My spellng is not vary good in ths articl. Please bear with me; I have had to stay up late to type this article! William Astle 5612 43 St Cls Olds, Alberta, Canada T4H 1C3 NOTE: The file "BINHEX.BAS" accompanies the article; when the text refers to a program included, it is referring too this file. =* |
CM3SAVER - easy CM3 saves CM3SAVER is an abbreviated version of Color-
ware's TRANSLAT utility. I worked it into the list-
ings of H2RAYLIN (CFDM # 22) and NIB>CM3 that I re-
cently submitted to CFDM, but here it is presented
as a stand-alone program. If you have a basic pro-
gram to put a HSCREEN2 picture on the screen, make
sure CM3SAVER is on the same disk and add to the end
of the basic listing a line like:
2000 EXEC44539:RUN"CM3SAVER"
Press any key and CM3SAVER will do the rest and
save your picture as a CM3 file with all color
options intact.
Friends cleverer than I please note, I still
hope somebody will be able to delete much of the
data in lines 160 to 1040 for brevity's sake. =*

MORE ON COLOR MIXING In Issue 25, Keiran Kenny asks a followup question on color mixing; namely, aren't red, yellow and blue the "primary" colors, not red, blue and green? The answer is it depends on whether you are talking mixing of paint (pigments) or light. I went back to my old college Physics book to be sure I could explain this correctly. First, let's discuss light. White light is made up of all the colors of the spectrum. (The closest thing to pure white light is daylight on a cloudy day.) If you superimpose two colors of the spectrum, it is possible to get new colors not seen in the spectrum itself, but, if you combine all the colors of the spectrum, you get white. It turns out that, with light, the primary colors are red, blue and green. Your RGB monitor screen consists of => ____________________________________________________ clusters of red-, blue- and green-emitting phos- phor dots. The combination of colors emitted from them when excited by their respective electron guns gives the CoCo 3's 64 colors. When white light strikes an object, it can be totally reflected, partially reflected or totally absorbed. An object that appears white is totally reflecting; an object that appears black is totally absorbing. A pigment that appears blue absorbs red and reflects green and blue; a pigment that appears yellow absorbs blue and reflects green and red. If you mix together pigments of these two colors -- yellow and blue -- their absorptions are added. That is, both red and blue are absorbed, and only green is reflected. => ____________________________________________________ If you mix the primary colors of light (red, blue and green), you get white. If you mix the primary colors of pigment (red, yellow and blue), you get black. This is admittedly a simplistic explanation, but it should give you the idea. There were no RGB monitors when my Physics book was written. I don't even recall whether color TV had arrived. But, the Laws of Physics don't change; we just learn more and refine them. Before someone takes me to task on that last statement, let me add that a new science called "Chaos" (of which I know very little) is showing that the immutable "Laws" we were taught are, in reality, special cases of more general laws yet to be defined. =* |

INDIAN.NIB
Right now, because of my artistic attempts with Jim Mills' Thaediak story, I am trying to perfect the human form. This is of course, very difficult. 1) I have never had any art lessons. My mum and two brothers are very artistic. Me, I never had any real interest. 2) The limited palette and resolution of the CoCo. If the people are in the distance, they look very squarish and lacking detail. The solution is to draw people reasonable up close. That way, you have a large area to create a reasonalby real picture. 3) Believe it or not, and I am not bragging, but INDIAN.NIB and SPACE!.NIB were both drawn freehand. I believe I have found good colors for the skin. I think they look reasonably realistic, comments?=* |
MY CATS
Here is a very nice picture of Logan's cats. The
story behind this picture is that the picture came
with colors which did not show up correctly on RGB.
I have tried RGB, CMP, and TV and I still have no
idea of what the colors should be. I hope Logan
will forgive me if they are not as they should be!

Packet Radio Diagram
Several months ago, someone suggested that articles
could be submitted in picture form, as more of a
diagram than a text file.
Packet Radio is just that. It describes and pictures
a basic Packet setup.
For those of you who aren't familiar with Packet, it
runs just like a BBS over the phone line, except
that the phone line is replaced with a radio link.
Naturally, you need to be a licenced HAM operator to
set up and operate a Packet station.

SWIM.NIB
Here we go again. If you live anywhere in the
eastern U.S., you'll no doubt remember those two
weeks of ice, snow, and temperatures in the high
zeros!
That was when I was finishing up this picture
of three young people in a swimming pool. I chose
to put them in a pool as part of my effort to
accurately draw the human form on my CoCo. Things
like skin color, face, hair, proper shape and
related size of arms, legs, head, chest, etc. are
difficult (at least to me they are).
By drawing two young men and a young lady in
a pool, I could practice all of the above, plus an
attempt to get the water to reflect them.
I am pretty pleased with the result. Those
of you who have copies of Jim Mill's story and =>
____________________________________________________
pictures will recognize these three as Jeremy, Sean,
and Gabrielle. I simply cut them from another pix,
edited their shape, recolored them, and added detail
so they looked like they were in bathing suits.
So enjoy my attempts-and I hope you all feel
warmer!
POINTS: choosing flesh tones was tough. I settled
on a checkerboard pattern of pink and a light
orange to get that lightly tanned look. The checker
board is too small to really notice, especially if
you are more than about 3 feet from the screen.
choosing colors for lips, nose, hair, eyes,
and other details was tough. I didn't want to use
red and black, but brown didn't seem right either.
I settled on brown and dark red. It' okay. =*

CoCo Command Center THE RADIOMAN |
My CoCo Command Center I have 3 CoCo's set-up at my house. There's a CoCo 2 with single disk drive and a small TV. It's lo- cated in the children's play room and is used exclu- sively for the day care. The second CoCo is a 512k CoCo 3 with double disk drives, RGB monitor, and a DMP-105 printer. It is located at the end of a hall and is used for all kinds of jobs. I write my CFDM submissions here; my children do their reports for school here. However, my favorite CoCo is located in my bedroom and is part of my "command center". My CoCo Command Center is set-up on a big old mahog- any desk. I built a set of shelves that rest on the back half of the desk top. Set in the center of the shelves is a color TV. On top of the shelves is a VCR. The rest of the shelf space is designed => ____________________________________________________ to hold video tapes, computer disks, a double disk drive, and some miscellaneous items. In the center of the desk is a 512k CoCo 3 with MPI. It is con- nected to a DMP-132 printer and a black & white video camera. Connected to the left joystick port is the wiring for an alarm system which monitors all the doors and windows which are accessible from the ground level. Also, I have the TV set-up so that I can switch between my CoCo and cable TV. In addi- tion, the VCR is set-up so I can use it to record TV programs and also CoCo graphics which make excel- lent titles for homemade video productions. I am really proud of my "CoCo command center" and am eager to show it off! I've included a digitized picture of myself at the keyboard. In order to => ____________________________________________________ view this picture, use "NIBSHOW" with HSCREEN 4 and 200 lines. The picture title is "MY CCCC". I would be interested in knowing what kind of set- ups other Friends have. Maybe, Rick would even be interested in featuring someone's computer set-up each month. I am really curious to know what kind of set-up Rick is using in order to produce CFDM. Also, I would be happy to digitize photos of other people's "CoCo command centers" so they could be shown in CFDM. After all, a graphic is worth a thousand bytes!!! (RUN "NIBSHOW" and change screen resolution by pressing H before loading this pix.) =* |
THE RADIOMAN My family joined the CoCo World in December 1987
when my kids wanted a Nintendo or computer for
Christmas, and a computer seemed the logical choice
because it could provide entertaining games and com-
puter training for my children and a computer for my
business (KTNC Radio). Cost and the national dis-
tribution of Radio Shack made a CoCo 3 our choice.
We started with the CoCo 3, a color tv, a DMP-130,
and a computer cassette. (We'd wait with wonder as
the T&D tapes screeched as they loaded.) We have
since added 512K to that CoCo, another 128K CoCo 3,
two CoCo 2's, 4 double-sided and 4 single-sided
drives, 2 RGB monitors, and 2 more printers. We've
used 2 different Accounts Receivable programs for
billing (T&D and Microtech) and daily use Simply
Better & Deskmate 3 Ledger in our business. =>
____________________________________________________
And we have a ton of functional and entertaining
software, much of which was picked up at close out
prices when Tandy abandoned our wonderful machine.
I'm 51, my wife Karen is (??), our daughter Jenny is
19 & a soph. at Augustana (Sioux Falls), and our son
Jeff (yes, he now has a Nintendo & an Apple IIc) is
14 & an 8th grader. I'm the one who is really hook-
ed on the CoCo. While the day is coming when we
must add an MS-DOS machine at work, I'll keep on
enjoying my 3's until they blow their last chip! I
am no program builder, but I do enjoy reworking
programs to meet my personal needs. I am constantly
amazed how much can be done with short CoCo programs
and how user-friendly CoCo Extended Basic is. I am
a member of the Metropolitan Area Color Computer
Club (MACCC) of Omaha/Council Bluffs. Because =>

all bulletin board contact is long distance, this

make the computer work for you like "Simply Better",

4 Wish List HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! Reply: To J. Hopson C/O Larry F. |
| Back to top |
CoCo 4 Wish List If there is one thing that I would love to see on a
new CoCo 4, it would be increased CPU speed. I like
the RS-DOS, I like BASIC, I even can deal with 512k,
but for REALLY SERIOUS applications, the CoCo really
runs too slow. I am not complaining because I use
my CoCo a lot to do stuff. I don't even want to
upgrade to a 68000 chip. But I also recognize that
the 6809 is NOT CAPABLE of running above 2 mhz.
Many chips on the CoCo cannot either, so in essence,
a whole new computer would have to be built from
scratch.
If there was another thing, I would add EVEN
MORE MEMORY (a couple of megs!) and be able to use
that extra memory for IMPROVED GRAPHICS. Say, 256
colors on Hscreen 2. I love my CoCo 3, but I think
I would really love a CoCo 4 !! =*

HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! For 29 issues now we've never really been at a loss
for material for CFDM. But...lately we've really
been running low in a number of areas. I've called
on you for help before when things needed a little
boost. But this is the most serious appeal I've had
to make. If CFDM is to continue with a full disk of
enjoyable material, everyone is going to have to dig
down and come up with something.
WE NEED FAMILY TREES from those who've never sent
them! If you don't like to use ENTRY WRITER, just
send me a printout from your favorite processor. Or
for those who've sent FTs, you might follow Jim
Bennett's example found in the FAMILY TREE of this
issue.
=>
____________________________________________________
WE NEED PROGRAMS! I know we have many talented
programmers out there and we REALLY need your work!
For issues #25, #26, and #27, I found the time to
write programs. But...I just do not have the time
to write...even a program a month. I sure wish I
did because there's nothing I enjoy more.
WE NEED REVIEWS! The cupboard is now bare in this
area. Reveiws are not hard to write when you're
talking about your favorite program or peripheral.
Please send them in!
WE NEED ART AND CARTOONS! We have a GREAT group of
artists and you've favored us with lots of art.
Please don't stop now. Get creative or find some
art you've put aside. =>

WE NEED YOUR FORUM ENTIRES! Surely you have some
strong opinions about something having to do with
the CoCo. Or ask a question that will spark some
conversation.
WE NEED YOUR INPUT! Look at the entry "ABOUT CFDM"
in the ABOUT COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE section. I
remember writing the words "The success of this
effort depends on each one who becomes a subscriber.
Everyone must contribute his/her two cents in the
form of articles, programs, opinions, experiences,
etc. If this happens we will all look forward to
the next issue." That statement is as true now as
it was when I first wrote it..over 29 months ago!

Reply: To J. Hopson C/O Larry F. To: Jerry Hopson
Jerry: I did not feel that Larry Falk had broken
faith with me because for some time now I have been
taking the PCM magazine from Falsoft, Inc. and have
liked the MS-DOS G-Basis programs that are printed
each month plus some of the other written materials
that are in the magazine.
But I will have to agree with you that if someone
did not want to buy the PCM magazine then it should
have been his or her option to have the yearly
subscription price refunded to you, or at the least
give The Rainbow COCO'ist a choice of several other
computer magazines to choose from in this world.
Please don't get me wrong I still like my COCO's
but I also like my MS-DOS Tandy 1000 HX computer =>

CFDMRICK!! Well I finally broke over and signed on with Delphi.
My main concern has always been having to pay long-
distance phone bills. That's still a major concern!
But...I did it anyway. It's a lot of fun and I'd
recommend it to anyone living in an area with a
local access number (no long distance calls). I
guess the main reason I signed up at this time is to
be able to find out what kind of CoCo action is
still taking place out there and also to get a good
view point of what's going on with the CoCo2emulator
that I wrote so much about last month.
I have talked to our Friends Terry Simons and Quinn
Granfor. And I exchanged a little chit chat with
Marty Goodman and Frank Swygert (FARNA). =>

Another objective is to retrieve a ROM of the Dragon
computer for our Friend Ray Smith in Great Britain.
As has been previously reported, Ray does a disk
magazine devoted to the Dragon computer. I told Ray
about the CoCo2emulator and how the docs said it had
been tested and worked with the Dragon. Ray sent me
a copy of his disk magazine to test it. I then
discovered that the Dragon ROM that I had did not
contain the Disk Operating System. So I could not
test his disk.
The next step is to obtain a Dragon ROM. I hope to
do that tonight by getting on Internet, a worldwide
BBs, thru Delphi. Wish me luck.
=>

If this CoCo2emulator is useful with the Dragon, it
will be very beneficial to Ray in winning back and
even gaining new psuedo-Dragon users. I can see
where he could even gather a users group here in the
US!
By the way, my Delphi username is CFDMRICK. If you
are on-line, leave me a message!

session.)

FROM THE EDITOR (i29) As usual I seem to be running behind. But school
will be over next week and I should have a little
more spare time to get a good start on issue #30 and
the new CoCo Registry Project. I'm looking forward
to that!
It's only been nine days since issue #28 went out
and already I've received a number of inquiries and
orders for the CoCo 2 Emulator. This really makes
me feel hopeful! One of the objectives of CFDM was
to sustain the CoCo Community. Not only I but many
others have always secretly (or not so secretly)
wished that a CoCo 4 was possible. Never before has
there been even a gleam of hope. Now I see a small
gleam. Please keep in mind that it is up to us to
make the most of this opportunity. As individuals =>

we may do so much, but there is a limit! As a united
group we can be very strong and do much! The key
word here is UNITED. I stress that each and every
Friend is important in the continuance of CFDM and
every project that we undertake. Please note that
our more successful projects can almost be predicted
by the number of Friends who participate!
Again I say "Be Hopeful, Be Helpful! and we shall
succeed!"
Until next month, I wish you all a happy summer's
beginning!

GOD MUST REALLY LOVE ME! All to often we seem to neglect to be thankful for all the blessings of life! The other day I had a few moments to reflect on the many blessings that God has sent my way. Such a practice is to be highly recommended. It helps keep us humble and that is a rare but much needed characteristic in today's society of "because I'm worth it" and "it's not my fault". When I mentally listed my blessings I found it was a long list and I couldn't possibly complete it. First there was the wonderful family I was born to. I didn't deserve it but I had a wonderful father and mother who took care of me and taught me to seek my creator in the days of my youth. Their teachings have kept me out of trouble and helped me to => ____________________________________________________ recognize the importance of having God in my life. Next I would list my wonderful wife and three dear daughters. I know I don't deserve it, but I'm very thankful for a family who loves me. And I hope that I can show them that I love them too! To young folks let me say, "you are most blessed to have someone who loves you, rather than having someone you love who doesn't love you"! Although I don't deserve it and sometimes abuse my health, I have been most fortunate to have lived a life with very few health problems. Not everyone is so blessed and would trade everthing else for it. Let me not forget to be thankful for my fellow => ____________________________________________________ workers who show me more respect and cooperation than I rightfully deserve. And for over two hundred Friends all over this country and indeed from all over the world. Most I've never seen, yet I feel a close kinship with them and not only because of our common interests. Finally I want it known that I'm thankful for God's word. And although I do not claim to understand it all, I am committed and do believe that every word is true. (If there was one word or phrase I didn't believe, then how could I believe any of it?) And I believe the saviour it tells of and that one day I had a personal experience with him which is not only good but also necessary! I would that all possessed this peace of mind! =* |

+1 Service Rick: Business people who go the extra mile for
their customer have always impressed me. When we
ordered "Photon" for Christmas (Dec 1993), you not
only saw that my very late order got here on time,
but you sent along another demo copy of CFDM. You
had teased me before with issue No. 4, but this time
you got me hooked! In our business (KTNC Radio), we
call that "+1 Service"...always do a little more
than the customer expects and when you screw up (and
we all will sooner or later) make it right and go
another step further. I'm impressed...with the ser-
vice as well as the product!

RICK: Charles I REALLY appreciate your nice comments
and thought I'd take a line or two to relate a story
about the complimentary disks. I've always been
very optimistic about CFDM and felt that any "real"
CoCoist who saw it could not turn it down! So..I've
made a habit of sending a complimentary copy of CFDM
to anyone who wasn't a subscriber if they ordered
something else or even inquired about CFDM.
Some time ago I started making little notations of
those I had sent complimentary copies of CFDM. While
nearly 40% of all those who have ever seen CFDM are
still subscribing, the numbers are not nearly that
good for those who saw CFDM for the first time by
receiving a complimentary issue. =>
____________________________________________________
Just last week I did a little tallying of those who
had never purchased a copy of CFDM but had received
a complimentary copy. Of the 63 who had been "GIVEN"
CFDM only 7 had followed up with a subscription!
These numbers have caused me to really believe what
I have suspected for a long time now..."Many people
don't put much value in things that they have not
had to pay for!"
I've almost decided that I won't give anymore comp.
copies of CFDM. It doesn't seem to pay great returns
....except in a few cases. I'm very happy that in
this case, Charles has went against the odds and
shown his appreciation for our efforts. Thanks again
Charles for your very nice letter!!

ABOUT THAT COCO 2 EMULATOR Dear Rick & Family,
I want to thank you for another wonderful CFDM
disk, just full of good stuff (issue #28).
I found your article on the CoCo II Emulator
just fantastic. Enclosed is my $5 for the disk.
I would like to stimulate a CoCo programmer to
develop a CoCo III Emulator for CFDM members and
other CoCo enthusiasts.
I purpose that say $35 or so from each member
interested, be put in holding for the person that
develops the, "CoCo 3 Emulator".

PLEASE SUBMIT TO MEMBERS
Enclosed is my check #152 for $35. $30 is for

Please say Hi to your family.

ARTHUR HALLOCK MEETS EMULATOR! Dear Rick,
....The disk and magazine arrived Monday, ..........
....so I got up and tried your disk out (the CoCo 2
Emulator). You know Rick, it's even better than I
thought it would be!
The emulator has at least tried to work with every-
thing that I have thrown at it, with the exception
of CoCoMAXII, and if I look hard enough, there just
might be a version of MAXII that worked with the
standard mouse, as I think that the hi-res mouse is
what is causing the problems (the cursor won't move
a lick.) One of the first things that I ported over
was VIP, and darned if the virtual disk drive
doesn't look just about like a standard CoCo disk =>

drive under Disk-Zap! DALLAS QUEST appeared to run
normally; but I'm not too sure about the FLIGHT
SIMULATOR; SCRIPSIT seems normal, and so does COLOR
PROFILE, but it has been so many years since I've
used them, I couldn't give them much of a tryout.
A couple of the games (I'm not much of a game
player) acted sluggish with the mouse, but I didn't
speed anything up for a good test. ZAXXON didn't
seem to have control of the mouse, and DINOWARS did
some flashing that I don't remember, but the rest
seemed to work all right.......
-----
RICK: Thanks for the first hand review of the CoCo 2
Emulator, Art! I'd like to note that when Art =>
____________________________________________________
mentioned that "a couple of the games acted sluggish
with the mouse, but I didn't speed anything up..",
he was referring to the ability of the Emulator to
RUN higher speeds. That is if the PC has the speed,
it can RUN the CoCo 2 programs faster than the CoCo
2 can. That's a nice feature to look forward to if
there is a CoCo 3 Emulator!

I DON'T HAVE TIME TO WRITE! Hi Rick,
I think that it is really fine the way so many of
your subscribers contribute to the magazine. In
times to come, I hope that I can provide something
of interest, and some help also. Right now, all that
I have time to do is to barely keep up with what is
going on in the magazine, and to pick up a piece of
required replacement equipment occassionally. What
I do have time to do now, however, is to renew my
subscription. ......
...noticed that a reader is having trouble selecting
a font with his Word Power 3.x word processor. From
what he says, it seems to me that he is forgetting
to mark the text that he wants to change. =>
____________________________________________________
He must Mark the start of the selected text by
placing the cursor just before that text, and then
press [CTRL] [M]. This will insert the Greek letter
Beta. Next place the cursor just after the selected
text and Mark the end of the text in the same way.
He can then press [CTRL] [I] etc. Each Beta will be
deleted and the text will change color to indicate
the font change.
If he is already doing this, then I suggest that he
go to the Startup feature and change the color of
the border and the highlight: These colors are also
used to indicate the font change, so no change will
show if they are the same color as the normal text.

The Word Power 3.3 processor is actually more power-

use Word Power 3.3 all the time. If he needs more
help, I'll be glad to give it to him if he has a
specific question and can call. (615-433-0343) I
just don't have much time to write at the present.

Kudos for Rick! It's been quite some time since I dropped a line
to CFDM and decided I better get on the ball or
Rick may think I've gave up on everything COCO
related. The truth is since my heart attack in Jan.
93, I've been a good 'ol' boy and tried to get as
much excercise in as possible, therefore cutting
down on my COCO time. But I still have the same
reasoning on the subject of CFDM! I feel that Rick
started the best thing to ever happen to our COCO,
without CFDM I would have never met the great
COCOist's I know now, and I know that they are all
there to help us. I have recieved letters and
programs from every place in the USA imaginable,
and I'm backlogged on letters as usual, but I'll
get to them soon. For three CFDM friends, myself,

NOT SURE, BUT SEND EMULATOR Dear Rick,
Enclosed is $5 for the CoCo II Emulator. I don't
have a PC but, I may have access to one I can use.
At this point I am not sure if this is good or
bad. Possibly it may tend to steer some toward the
PC and away from the CoCo. On the other hand it may
have the effect you describe in your article. At any
rate unless it leads to a CoCo III, I'm not sure of
it's value. It is however an interesting develop-
ment.
All in all I think you have a pretty good
balance in what is presented in CFDM. Keep up the
good work. =>

RICK: Charles thanks for your input! I mean it is
always wise to look at all possibilities. I really
don't think the community is going to lose members
any faster than it already is and I definitely don't
see us growing! My desire is growth and looking for
ways we can grow. With a CoCo III Emulator, there
seems to be better chances of gaining than losing!
At present we stand at slightly over 200 members.
Last year, June '93, we had 241. I think the great
fall is over but the dwindling effect is bound to
continue. And I want to stay active indefinitely! =>

I very much agree with your statement about the
necessity that the emulator be a CoCo III Emulator!

for the best!

New Listing of Friends Rick, Is it possible to get a complete listing of all the friends along with phone numbers and addresses so we can have a complete reference on hand when needed? It might save some time on looking up the Friends on past disks. Maybe one of the Friends could make a list. Something on the order of the map and the names of Friends and where they are located. ----- RICK: Jim that is a good idea and it's caused me to do some thinking! I've come up with an answer to your request that will begin what I believe will be a most exciting project. Read about it "The CoCo Registry" in the ACTIVE COCO section. =* |
PREFERENCE: COCO! Hi Rick,
Herewith an International Money Order to renew my
subscription to CFDM (disk).
...I enjoy the HARDCOPY very much and am building up
the "disk" library. I am trying to get subscriptions
of as many CoCo "new" magazines as I can - each one
has something different and they're all so well
done. Strange that Motorola has not continued with
CoCo OS-9 (Basic 09) - it's very much, it seems,
like it was the basis for MS-DOS! My husband has a
Tandy 1110 laptop and a Compac notebook..but I find
my CoCo, though slower, easier to figure out: bells
and whistles are getting too complicated - it's
DOS 6.01 now! Wow! Well - it was nice of you =>
____________________________________________________
to explain - and I look upon Rick's as a friend.
Keep up the good work as long as possible - wish I
could be of more help than just a subscription and
a "nice letter"!
Bonjour to you and all other
CoCo enthusiasts.
L. Boult
Ottawa, Ont. Canada
------
RICK: And thank you L. for your "very nice letter"!
The "very nice letters" and the subscriptions make
it possible for me to continue CFDM!....AND I REALLY
APPRECIATE THAT!!! =*

Renew My Subscription! Rick,
Please renew my subscription for another 6 months
as soon as you receive this diskette. I've lost my
subscription number, so I hope this doesn't put you
into too much trouble. By renewing my subscription,
I hope this will relay a message to all of the
working CFDM members that I really appreciate their
programs, graphics, music, information and just
plain camaraderie (and that includes you)! I've
put my NX-2420 printer through a workout since
receiving it (especially the 7 color graphics capa-
bilities). I have copied all of the opening CFDM
graphics and plan to cut them to size to fit a
photo album for display. Almost all of them are a
work of art (in my opinion) and deserve to be
bragged about. =>

DOUBLE OH FRIENDS! DIGI-FUN by Godfrey Moll <g> Hungarian Dance #5 |
| Back to top |
CFDM'S DOUBLE OH FRIENDS! I just recently received a renewal from our Friend
Charlie Round. As I updated the last digits of his
subscription number, I couldn't help but notice that
the first digits of his number were 0 and 03 (his
number is now 0-03-43). The 0 and 03 tell me that
Charles was the 4th person to ever try CFDM. The
first three were Bill Link 0-00, Dick Bland 0-01,
and Bob Griffard 0-02. Bill never got passed issue
#1. Dick lasted to issue #19. And Bob just dropped
out a few months ago even tho he had gone to the PC
nearly a year ago.
THIS MEANS THAT CHARLIE IS THE OLDEST (meaning he's
been with us longer) CFDM SUBSCRIBER!!
CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS CHARLIE!!

popular that music lovers everywhere stopped him
on the street to beg for his autograph. His Dance

of tempo. I hope that you like this transcription.

DELPHI SESSION A NEW BASIC COMMAND CATHWEELS - more rotation MORE STRINGART - STRING7 Save Screen II |
| Back to top |
A DELPHI SESSION As you may have read in the FROM THE EDITOR section,
I recently joined Delphi. One of the nice options of
the terminal program I'm using is that it allows me
to capture everything that goes across my screen
while I'm online. Then when I leave Delphi, I can
read the file at my leisure.
I thought the Friends might enjoy seeing one of the
polls I recently read in the CoCo SIG of Delphi. It
seems that anyone can conduct a poll and anyone else
can vote and comment in the poll. This one caught
my eye because it asks "How often do you program
your CoCO?" Over two hundred participated in this
poll and gave some good and sometimes humerous
comments.

the file. The scroll will move the text down about
eight lines at a time.

A NEW BASIC COMMAND View text file associated with this article Have you ever wanted to add commands to BASIC? Do
you have a good grasp of programming but do not know
where to begin? This article is for you if you said
yes to either of these questions.
First, you must be able to program in assembly
language and either have an assembler or know how to
assemble by hand. Next, you must know something
about how BASIC commands operate.(that is beyond the
scope of this article).
I have included three files:
POP .BIN LOADM:EXEC and you can use the POP
command. This takes no memory from
your program.
POPTEXT .BAS RUN -- displays POPTEXT.TXT =>
____________________________________________________
POPTEXT .TXT - contains a brief description of the
assembly language listing and how to
add commands. It also contains the
listing.
For those of you who do not know what POP does, it
works exactly like RETURN except it does not return
to the statement after the GOSUB; it executes the
next statement. This is useful if you have called
a routine with GOSUB and do not want to return to
the calling routine. This can be used if you wish
to process an error and return to another location
in the program. I am sure you can find plenty of
uses for this knifty command.

CATHWEELS - more rotation
My program, ROTATION, on CFDM #19, demonstrated a method of using palette switching to create a rotary effect. CATHWEEL does the same with a colorful cath- erine wheel. The loop in lines 80 to 140 draws a wheel with eight plumes. Each plume consists of eleven arcs in the colors in slots 0 to 10 as in the string A$ in line 30. The loop in lines 150 to 180 moves the first two- digit value in the string B$ to last position and then pokes the values in their new order into color slots 0 to 10. Drawing the catherine wheel takes too much time and patience for my comfort so I saved the (still) picture as CATHWEEL/NIB. In NIBWEELR/BAS lines 30 to 180 are a very sim- plified version of NIBLOADR/BAS. They will load => ____________________________________________________ CATHWEEL/NIB and, when it is loaded, lines 220 to 250 provide the rotary effect. If you substitute another filename for CATHWEEL in line 90, you can load any NIB file and then enter basic code beginning with line 220 to add further graphic elements to your picture (with or without animation). Note that NIBLOADR/BIN must be on the same disk as NIBWEELER and your NIB picture file. =* |
MORE STRINGART - STRING7 At a recent book sale by our local Friends of the
Library, I picked up another book on stringart -
"Stringart: Step-by-Step" by Robert E. Sharpton,
published in 1975 by Chilton Book Company. It gives
me another source for designs that are worth putting
on the CoCo.
In CFDM Issue 3, I described stringart, so I won't
repeat it here. RUN"STRING7" and you will see the
"nails" set. Then two colors of "string" will be
wrapped around the nails to form the simple, but
attractive design, WEB. I hope that at least some
of you enjoy this demonstration of graphics on the
CoCo, as I plan to do more.
It occurs to me that I have rarely included my
address or phone number with my submissions, so I
=>

will remedy that now. I will be happy to hear from
any Friend whether comments or questions on my
entries or on any other subject.

Save Screen II I received CFDM issue #22, and played with Mario
Lecours' assembly program that saves a text screen
and restores it at a later time. Then I went to
camp. Upon returning, Hardcopy was waiting and as I
read through it, I remembered the Save Screen
program. So I took a look, and I think I fixed the
problem. It seems to work perfectly now. I have
submitted the corrected BASIC program that will
create the SHORT m/l file called SSCREEN.BIN. I also
rewrote the DEMO, now called NEWDEMO.BAS. It is
somewhat similar. RUN the SSCREEN.BAS program which
will create the SSCREEN.BIN. Then RUN NEWDEMO.BAS
and follow the on screen directions. If you want to
use Save Screen, you should be able to figure out
how by listing the NEWDEMO program.
=>
____________________________________________________
To Mario:
The problems you encountered were because you
saved the screen to memory that the computer used to
store BASIC programs. I just added a few lines to
map an unused 8k block into $4000-$5FFF. That way
your program, in a nut shell, copied block $36 (the
high-res text screen) into block $37 (unused 8k
block). Naturally, I also had to add lines to move
the correct block back. Other users may want to
include the high-speed poke at the start, and slow-
speed at the end. I won't go into the a/l right now
but it would be a simple process. (See comments in
the SSCREEN.BAS program that I submitted.)
Thanks for a neat program

for the COCO 3 ??????? DS-69B DIGITIZER |
| Back to top |
CD-ROM for the COCO 3 ??????? There has been a lack of new products for the
CoCo 3, especially in the hardware area. But if
you have a digitizer such as the Rascan, DS-69B,
etc., you can utilize a relatively new machine.
You may have heard of it; it's called the CD-I,
Compact Disk Interactive. Philips Corporation
makes the CD-I and it is available at some
department stores or electronic stores. Thanks
to Philips, we can access picture images from
Photo CD's.
The hook up is the same as with the VCR.
Just plug the video jack to the video jack on
your digitizer and your in business. The pictures
that you capture from the CD-I are very clear and
do not move or jerk around when in the pause mode.
This is probably the closest we will come to =>
____________________________________________________
CD-ROM for the COCO 3 for now. Maybe someday,
we will be able to get true CD-ROM capabilities
for our beloved machine (emulator coco 3 for PC's).
Thanks to the uniqueness of CD-I, you can
put your own photographs on CD's, develop them,
and print them with the help of COCO 3. This can
allow for creativity on our part. I think it is
a challenge and if you have a digitizer, it is
well worth the cost involved. The Philip's CD-I
is priced at $499.00 if you want movie capabilities
and $399.00 without it. The CD-I will play any
of your existing audio CD's, photo CD's, CD-I
Games and some CD-Rom XA Games for IBM compatibles.
The CD-I can even be used with the COCO 2. You
can order directly through Philip's Corp. at the
following telephone number (1-800-845-7301). =>

I hope you can purchase one and see how easy
it is to use one. You will be seeing some of the
pictures I have taken through the photo CD process
in the future.
Until next time....

DS-69B DIGITIZER The DS-69B digitizer makes it possible for the user
to "capture" a picture from a VCR or video camera
and convert it into a CoCo 3 graphic. 3 kinds of
pictures are possible: PMODE 4 graphics, 128 x 128
graphics with 16 shades of grey, and 256 x 256 gra-
phics with 16 shades of grey. The last 2 kinds of
pictures are HSCREEN graphics.
The digitizer is a combination of hardware and soft-
ware. The hardware is a ROM pack which goes into a
slot in a multi-pack interface. In the top of this
ROM pack is a jack for an RCA type plug. This is
where you attach the wire from your video source.
The software works flawlessly. The quality of the
graphics is excellent. =>
____________________________________________________
The software enables you to do just about everything
that you would want to do with a digitized image.
You can SAVE and LOAD to/from disk and you can even
print graphics if you have one of the popular dot
matrix printers. (There are about 20 print drivers.
I found drivers for both my DMP-105 and DMP-132.)
The HSCREEN graphics are saved as PIX files. There
are several graphics utilities which will load these
files, including the "TRANSLAT" CoCo Max III utili-
ty. This means that it is possible to edit a digi-
tized picture with CoCo Max III. I used this tech-
nique to create one of the HRIDDLES that appeared in
CFDM.
I have used this digitizer for a couple years now =>
____________________________________________________
and I have found nothing to criticize about it. In
fact, I am always amazed at how great each graphic
looks the first time I see it digitized!
I give this digitizer my highest rating. If you can
find one of these second-hand, buy it immediately!
Even if you're not interested in digitizing images,
this is an item which you can re-sell without any
trouble. Just advertise it in CFDM and see how
long it takes to sell it!!! I would say that this
is a really HOT item! It was one of the really
superior products that was developed for the CoCo.

Color Printers NX-2420/NX-1020 I would like to know if these printers could be
easily adapted to suit conditions out here in the

lead to overheating.

EXTENDING RIBBON LIFE? Sometime ago there was a tip in Rainbow how to
extend the life of the DMP105 printer ribbon. By
prying off the top of the cartridge and carefully
reversing the position of the sponge inker roller,
after which even further longevity could be enjoyed
by adding a drop or two of matrix ink. I have
accomplished the procedure, except for the matrix
ink and have tried, without success, about every
computer or office supply store in this area. The
one source I chanced upon was Computer Friends, Inc.
out in Portland, Oregon. They will ship 2 oz. for
$3 plus $12 shipping and handling; rather ridiculous
don't you think?
Should you know of a more reasonable source I will
appreciate any information in your Q's & A's =>

HELP Thanks to Terry G and his Upgrade to which I sub- scribe, I now have 40TRK Double-Sided Drives. CFDM issue #26 and #27 (which I backed up with my new 40 TRK) did some weird things (the backup, that is)-The back-up itself gave me IO ERROR towards the end of it's whirring. I take it that it was looking for the additional tracks that weren't there? Part of each issue was fine, until I tried to get the Letters From the Editor-I got stripes of graphics. Went back to other articles and hit Kudos - I got a weird looking Main Menu. The topics are listed as usual except there is (1%) behind each. IE: ABOUT COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE (1%) Until I hear from someone as to what I should do about my 40TRK goof-ups, I will not try to back up anything on a 35 TRK disk. I will COPY from it. I => ____________________________________________________ certainly do not wish to remove and change the chip in my disk controller every time I back up a 35 TRK disk. It was with trepidation that I changed the chip in the first place. I love my CoCo and so far have man- aged to upgrade it to 512K and now changed the disk controller without doing damage (I hope). NEED HELP WITH SLOW SCAN? I would very much appreciate your helping me out
with the use of the Cocosstv program which is
contained on the "CC3FAX" disk. The program loads,
and after entering "EXEC", it then displays the
"SLOSCAN" which I have let run some twenty times
before entering LIST which brings up the menu. How
many times is it designed to show the title?
I am using the Coco III which does not have the 512K
as required for the FAX program. Might there be
anything amiss here? Usually, by entering LIST, the
lines of command are shown. In this case, the setup
of radio receiver to the computer plus any others
would be advised. Is this particular program not
made to allow for a listing as such?
=>
____________________________________________________
I would like to copy the SSTV program on a separate
disk if this is possible. It was written in 1985,
but I do not know if any of the operating formats
have been changed. I frequently am able to pick up
the SSTV signals here, there is a US net on Sundays
at local 3:00 pm, would certainly like to be able to
"look in" if possible. Some years back I had used a
Venus monitor with a single format of 121 lines at 8
seconds, B&W. I cannot say whether there might be
any practical possibility of adapting it to one of
the more frequently used present speed/lines. Maybe
some SSTV operator could answer this.
All information received will be most welcomed.

Solitaire Hi Rick,
After seeing some articles about COCOPRO's game
SOLITAIRE not working and since I had purchased it,
I decided I would give it a try. This is the
results:
I used a copy of Radio Shack's OS'9 Level II disk
without any changes made to it, in other words 35
track single sided etc. I opened window 7 and
moved into it and then put my SOLITAIRE disk in
drive 0. I had no problem bringing up and playing
regular Solitaire and using the -k option to bring
up Klondike and playing it. However when I tried
using any of the other options I would end up with a
black screen and some little white dots. I'm =>
____________________________________________________
sure it was giving me an error but I don't know what
it was because there were no letters or numbers,
just dots. I don't know a lot about programming so
don't know what the problem might be. However it did
work just fine with the regular size cards in the
regular game of Solitaire and the game of Klondike.
I hope I have given enough of my setup so that if
someone else wants to try it they can. I didn't try
bringing it up with any other format. If anyone has
any questions I would be glad to try and help.

Where'd you put your CFDM Patch? Hey, all you winners & buyers of CFDM patches, where
did you put your patch? I'm overly curious. Sent in
your answers to Rick. I'm sure many others are also
curious about it.
I don't know if Rick told anyone else, but I sent
Rick the first CFDM patch. The prototype patch. So,
Rick's CFDM is different from everyone else's. He
told he wonders where he could put his patch.
I can now reveal that I had 76 patches (1 prototype
& 75 revised) to begin with. As of April 3, (Easter)
there has been 3 winners, 1 sent to Rick & I'm
keeping 1. That leaves 71 for the contest and
buyers. Do you want a CFDM Patch?
