"ABOUT CFDM" COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with that format exclusively. A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong. By providing a unique means of communication, maybe old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our knowledge and experiences! The success of this effort depends on each one who becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/ her two cents in the form of articles, programs, opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the manual with your starter kit for details on how to submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =* |
ABOUT COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is the creation and property of Rick Cooper. It is distributed solely by RICK'S COMPUTER ENTERPRISE. The material which makes up each issue remains the property of the author(s) or contributor(s) unless an agreement has been made otherwise. COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated exclusively to those who enjoy the COCO3 operating under RS DOS. It is hoped that this publication will encourage the continued usage of our favorite computer. Neither CFDM nor RICK'S COMPUTER ENTERPRISE will be responsible for the submission or publication of any material that does not belong to the submitter. WE DO NOT ADVOCATE OR SUPPORT PIRACY! =* |

THIS MONTH'S COVER This picture was taken from the mountains of
Oregon. This particular mountain is Mount Hood.
I found this a great picture for displaying a
winter scene. I tried to get the chill, snow, and
frostiness feeling into this picture and I think
I had some success. The next time anyone goes
through a heat wave, just pull this scene out of
your disk library and cool off by just looking
and feeling the wintry air. Winter is one of
my favorite seasons, mainly because of the snow
and how clear the air is. See you again with
another picture next time.

AN ACTIVE COCOIST! Sorry that I've not been in contact with you for the past months, the usual suspects of vacations, jobs and school have been keeping me pretty busy. I've not had time to read CFDM #18 or #19, then I belatedly realized that my subscription must have run out. So here is my renewal for an entire years worth (starting from where I left off). I hate when that happens. You may have noticed the hardcopy of this letter is printed with my new INK JET printer that I was telling you about. Yes I finally got through all the snags inherent in interfacing a Tandy machine with an "outside" system. I purchased a HP-500 this summer (from Tandy owned Computer City ironically enough) and after following instructions from => ____________________________________________________ Bill Palmer and yourself I've got it all cranked up and spitting out high quality inkjet pages in SECONDS. I will be writing an article about this, but if any CFDM'ers have an urge to jump on this excellent ink-jet bandwagon, I would be more than happy to help them out before hand. Work has been going great. I've been promoted recently and as always they keep me busy. I work for an electronic publisher. We maintain bulletin boards, indexs and trade information for the financial industry. We have offices world wide and I often speak with people across the globe. I think I may also write an article about that... My new 512K upgraded computer is working fine => ____________________________________________________ but here and there I keep finding small differences about what will run and what won't so I'm keeping my 128K handy. Why won't ROBOCOP work under 512K? The new 20 meg HARD DRIVE is great! I love the DECB side of it the most and enjoy the freedom of 7 additional drives to use. MAX-10 won't run with the HD though, although I'm writing to DISTO about a new product that will interface the controller with the multi-pak!!! I may write an article about this... My quest for my Masters degree continues. This semester I find myself studying "C" language at MIT. I also purchased INFINITUM Technology's C package to assist me in my studies. I'm doing quite well and can program in C with some effort. (See Part II) =* |
AN ACTIVE COCOIST! (PART II) My BIO article for the Family Tree is still in
the pipeline. I'm still somewhat shy.....
PROGRAMS, PROGRAMS, PROGRAMS. Yes I'm working
on several when I have time. BASEBALL INDEX, SECURE
DIARY, TOUCHPAD TEST, MONEY PILE, MONSTER PIT, TRUE
RND, and perhaps an upgraded version of my SCREEN
SAVER which was published in January 1993 RAINBOW.
(If anyone has an ORIGINAL copy of the disk and
package, please contact me. I never got one from
FALSOFT and WANT one!!!)

An Early Christmas Present When I purchased my CoCo 3 a few months ago from an
individual, he kindly threw in a few programs which
he would no longer need. I am not a game fanatic, so
rather than let them sit on the shelf and collect
dust I am thinking there might be a Friend out there
who would enjoy putting them to use. So-o-o-o-o-o-o,
unknown Friend, accept them as a gift from me. I
wish to send all five programs to one addrress to
minimize shipping charges which I will assume. If
anyone interested, drop me a line. FIRST REQUEST

6809 ASSEMBLY PROGRAMMING PT2 View text file associated with this article This is the second article in my series on assembly
language programming. The format this month is the
same; RUN "ASSEM2" to get a copy of the article.
This month, you actually learn some programming. Do
not worry if you do not understand all of it; it
took me several years to figure most of it out.
Enjoy this article; it is only 5 pages long this
time. The programs listed in the article are not
included on the disk; they are too short.

MUSIC3+ -- GREAT PROGRAM When we returned recently, from our latest six-
week trip to the Northwest and Southwest, I had CFDM
Issues #20 and #21 to ENJOY! JIM BENNETT's "UNIQUE
FEATURES OF CFDM" caught my imagination immediately!
In the 5th Issue of CFDM I wrote an ARTICLE about my
use of the LYRA Music Program in conjunction with my
Electronic Keyboard (CASIO Tone Bank MT-260) - I had
NO response. I ENJOY the MUSIC prepared by FRIENDS
using GEORGE QUELLHORST's MUSIC3+, so I looked up my
copy from THE RAINBOW April 1991 Issue and went to
work or should I say PLAY? I now have many QUESTIONS
to ask, both of GEORGE and the other MUSIC3+ contri-
butors. By trying to transcribe songs from many dif-
ferent sources of Sheet Music, I found that I enjoy
the challenge to make them "SOUND" right. I have
very little musical talent and if RICK uses any =>
____________________________________________________
of my submissions -- you'll know also!
I did find a CHART that provided CHORDS to be
used with MELODY notes that are normally indicated
on Sheet Music. This ties in with JIM BENNETT's
suggestion that GRAPHICS can help provide informa-
tion in very usable form. When I am able to under-
stand more about the operation of MUSIC3+, I plan to
prepare a CHART with all of the CHORDS as they would
appear on a MUSIC3+ STAFF.
I've already gone back to the older Issues of
THE RAINBOW to review the printed material about the
earlier VERSIONS of MUSIC+ -- starting with Dec 1983
and THE COCO COMPOSER by LARRY KONECKY, then June
1984 MAKING FOUR-PART HARMONY EASIER by BOB LUDLUM
(if I had known I could have visited him in Panama
City!) and the UPDATES in June 1986 and 1987. =>
____________________________________________________
I can see many areas that could be clarified to
help the beginner Music Lover in using MUSIC3+ with
a few GRAPHICS.
GEORGE QUELLHORST's RESOUNDING COCO article in
the April 1991 Issue of THE RAINBOW magazine and the
program with the Music STAFF approach to ENTERing
NOTES has been a real JOY to PLAY with! I'm amazed
at the quick keyboard response!!! I'm looking for-
ward to many more Musical Submissions from FRIENDS
and many more hours of FUN at my own keyboard!
CFDM is certainly a well balanced publication!
I will only be away from Springfield and my CoCo
for the months of January and February 1994 -- mail
will be forwarded! Godfrey J. Moll

Retires is a picture inspired by my recent retire-

CMP/MONO/RGB NIBSHOW I am one of those CoCo Friends who unfortunatly does
not have a RGB monitor. I have a green monochrome
monitor and a color TV, but nearly all the .NIB
pictures in CFDM use RGB colors.
To help me with this I have taken previous NIB
viewers and installed routines that will change
a pix's colors to the proper CMP colors.
So, I've taken the latest NIB program, NIBSHOW,
and added the appropriate routines.
When you load up a picture in NIBSHOW, press M to
cycle thru 4 palette conversion modes:
RGB to CMP
RGB to CMP, set GIME monochrome bit
CMP to RGB
Restore normal palettes
Since some pictures may be CMP, I've included =>

provisions for converting CMP to RGB.
Hopefully, this will make your NIB viewing somewhat
more enjoyable.

Cartoons up to 8/23/93
Here I go again!
I've been busy scouring my magazines (POPULAR
ELECTRONICS, RADIO ELECTRONICS, COMPUTER SHOPPER,
MAD MAGAZINE, elementary electronics, AMERICAN
RIFLEMAN, READER'S DIGEST, etc.) for good clean
cartoons. Fairly hard this time. Many are hard to
draw, some are tasteless, a few were even vulgar. I
shouldn't be surprised. America is fast becoming the
cesspool of the world.

BEN WALKER I am another member of the rat race that has hung up
his running shoes. I retired from the military after
twenty-six years of service, went to work for and
retired from GE, so with nothing to do I went to
work for Trane making air conditioners. Now after
fifteen years, I retire again. So now Every Day Is A
Holiday. I am married and have two sons, the eldest
lives in Florida and the youngest in Arizona. I was
born and reared in East Texas, so I came back here
to retire.
Hopefully I can spend more time with my 512 CoCo III
that I got at a garage sale about the same time that
Rick started CFDM, thats when I joined. With the 512
came two CoCo 128's, one CoCo 64, CM-8, FD 500 disk
drive, Star NX-1020 printer, Star 2400 modem, --->

few books missing, eight years on tape), a speech-
sound cartridge, and games, games, games. plus many
good programs (CoCo Max III, Max 10, CGDP, First
Prize, etc). I have added some to the collection.
I scan each issue of CFDM when it arrives to see
what I cannot afford to miss, then when I have time
I thoroughly enjoy the entire contents of every pro-
gram. I am not a programer, but I have become very
proficient in using programs to fit my needs. I am
extremely grateful to all the talented contributors
of these programs. I am almost three months behind
in reading the CFDM (just retired). I have one room

CLYDE S. GANO I retired from my last job as Hospital Purchasing
Director 14 years ago. (I'll be 80 in Feb.)- The
following Christmas my son gave me a 4K COCO com-
plete with tape recorder & several Rom Paks includ-
ing Chess. Our TV was B/W and because I wanted to
distinguish between the red & the black I bought our
1st color TV. I soon learned that 4K was very little
memory so I upgraded to 32K & then to 64K, joined a
newly formed COCO Club & have been a COCO NUT ever
since. I now have a 512K COCO III,2 drives, RGB
monitor & printer.--With the help of my COCO, I make
an annual church birthday calendar, an annual church
directory, monthly financial reports, and edit and
publish a church newsletter.--Not to brag, but to
plant the seed of an idea, I can tell you that I
have purchased 3 other COCO III s with monitors & =>

of Files FAVORITE/MOST POPULAR PROGRAMS GROW CFDM AND COCO COMMUNITY! I HAVE A VISION... RE: LARRY PULLED A FAST ONE |
| Back to top |
Extensions of Files There is a slight problem with the type of files we submit to CFDM I feel. We properly use the .BAS for BASIC games, utilities, demos and startup of binary files; .BIN for almost all of our binary files; .NIB for our graphic files to CFDM; .DOC for the ASCII files to be read for instruction. But the music files improperly use the .BIN extension. Whenever the CD program tries to play a binary non-music file, the whole system crashes! I suggest we use .MUS for the music files. I realize all music file loaders will have to be modified, but it's better to simplify than confuse....Ray =* |
FAVORITE/MOST POPULAR PROGRAMS What may be one's favorite or most popular (used?)
program will probably be dictated by personal cir-
stances and needs. Without becoming very specific
about why, I would say that mine are:
1. Telewriter-128
2. SUPERDUP (allows me to back-up in my single drive
in three passes)
3. FLXILBLS (my own home made mailing label program)
Admittedly, the above three are "utilities", but
"utilities" are what make life easy for programmers
and writers. And my favorite peripheral is my $20
scientific calculator, always next to my CoCo! =*

GROW CFDM AND COCO COMMUNITY! Due to the snow and cold I have had a few days out
of school. This layoff has given me time (too much
time?) to think! I guess I am basically an impatient
person and usually want things to happen fast. The
line of thought that is usually on my mind is "How
can we improve CFDM, how can we grow, how can we
motivate, how can we.....?" I recently mentioned to
someone that I needed to write or see an article on
"What are we doing to help the CoCo Community?" Well
here's some thoughts.
- Support "some" of the publications and clubs that
are still supporting users and vendors. I try to
support and keep in contact with quite a few. I
recommend among others; ADVENTURE SURVIVORS, THE
COCO TRADER, THE GLENSIDE COCO CLUB, MID IOWA =>
____________________________________________________
COUNTRY AND COCO, THE ATLANTA COMPUTER SOCIETY,
THE LONG ISLAND COCO CLUB, THE WORLD OF 68 MICROS,
and others.
- Support vendors with your purchases and with a pat
on the back to let them know they are appreciated.
- Participate in the activities of the CoCo clubs
and publications you support. With CFDM we need
your continued input in the form of articles,
programs, graphics, and especially ideas.
- Remember John Kennedy's famous quote, "Ask not
what your CoCo Community can do for you, ask what
you can do to keep your CoCo Community strong!"
(I can't remember it word for word.) =>
____________________________________________________
Now here are some new thoughts:
- Seek out CoCoists who are not active in the way
you are. Help get them on the right path. Look up
names of programmers in old RAINBOWs, contact them
and see what the chances are that they will come
back and join us.
- My personal goal is to see a great increase in the
membership of CFDM. I'll try to do this by doing
my best to keep up the quality of our service and
of our product. I'm currently in the process of
contacting the many folks who have fallen by the
wayside over the past two years. I hope that you
too will make a great effort to help us grow!

I HAVE A VISION... I have a vision that some time in the future someone
is going to make an "astounding discovery" that
there was once a little computer (considered by some
to have been no more than a toy) which had an almost
unlimited potential for programming and for hardware
modification. I believe that this will occur at the
time when all the computers in the world will be de-
signed so that everyone will be software dependent.
When that occurs (and I believe it will), someone
will find an old CoCo, dust it off, and make the
"astounding discovery" that this little machine is a
tinkerer's dream, gives the average person (even
a child) amazingly sophistocated access to the world
of computer programming, and makes computing fun
once again!

RE: LARRY PULLED A FAST ONE To answer Jerry Hopson's question in issue 20'S FORUM: I was not cheated by Lonnie Falk. I had renewed my subscriptions to RAINBOW & R.O.D. about 3 months before the axe fell. COLD AND SNOWY ISSUE KUDOS <g> THE DRAGON THAW PROJECT |
| Back to top |
A COLD AND SNOWY ISSUE It's January 21st and issue #25 is almost complete.
The reason for this early finish is that I've been
out of school for over a week due to the uncommonly
cold and snowy weather we've just experienced. It
has really been a long time since we have had such a
winter in Kentucky. As a young person I experienced
many winters with snowfalls of six to twelve inches.
But in recent years it has been very mild. Last
weekend we received about eight inches of snow. This
is the biggest snow my eleven year old daughter has
ever seen.
The week off has given me a chance to catch up with
my CoCo work. Issue #25 is almost in the bag and I
hope you'll enjoy it. Please check out the Q & A
and see if you can be of assistance. Also I =>

hope you'll participate in the DRAGON THAW PROJECT.
(See entry in this section.) Let's get creative!
Let's have some fun!
Talking about fun reminds me of what a good time I
had at our recent "phone fest". It also reminds me
that I promised to announce the winner of our door-
prize for that event. The new NX STAR printer with
the Blue Streak Ultima was won by Roberta Sowell.
Congratulations Roberta and thanks for letting me
trade you out of the Blue Streak! Roberta had just
recently purchased a Blue Streak and agreed to let
me trade other products for the one she won. This
allows me to offer another NX STAR printer and a
Blue Streak at our next "phone fest". That will be
coming up in April. I'll let you know when. =>

With the following scripture I do not mean to take
it out of context. The meaning is for Christians to
work while it is day since there will be an end of
the time given for us to work. This can also be
said of us as CoCo users. If we do not do our work
now, there will come a time when all will be gone!
I must work the works of him that sent me, while it
is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

THE DRAGON THAW PROJECT With winter upon us we yearn for those nice warm days of summer. Just a little heat might help those days get here sooner. What we need is a few dragons to help get us thawed out. Red dragons, brown dragons, purple dragons, even black dragons with white spots will be welcomed. With that background let's begin the DRAGON THAW PROJECT. Issue #27 will be out in April. This issue will have our next Bonus Disk. We need some great material to fill that issue. I propose that the theme of issue #27 be DRAGONS. Here's what I'd like from our Friends. Artists will you please draw us some nice dragons? Cartoonists will you focus on some humorous dragon cartoons? Programmers can you make some games or educational programs that => ____________________________________________________ use dragons as their themes? We welcome any ideas you have! Now don't say you can't do it! I know you can and I can hardly wait to see what your creative minds come up with. I'll promise you that I will come up with something too! I don't know what it will be but I'll think of something. What about a dragon story or a dragon poem? Try your hand at it. It'll be great! For each Friend who submits dragon material, I'll reward you with a free flippie. CAN YOU DO IT? =* |
21CARD - PMODE4 version Rick: Just for if you wish to compare, I have put
21CARD, the original PMODE4 version of 21CARDX on
the disk.
Of course the color and HPRINT strings in 21CARDX
are very much in place here, but I think you may
agree that, for some purposes, black and white on
PMODE4 has its advantages. Try 21CARD with the high
speed poke (line 5) and it's just TOO fast!
---------------------------------------------------
Just a question, will this short letter take a full
granule of CFDM space or can it be merged with other
letters to the editor on a CFDM disk?
--------
RICK: Keiran your letter raises an interesting
question. That being "how much space does an =>
____________________________________________________
entry in CFDM use?" As I have mentioned before, CFDM
has it's own directory. It also has it's own method
of saving things. Where BASIC saves by the granule,
CFDM saves by the sector. (A granule is 9 sectors; a
sector is 256 bytes.) So a BASIC file that isn't
very big wastes a lot of disk space. CFDM's method
would waste a maximum of 255 bytes per entry. That
is if this entry is 257 bytes long, it would take 2
sectors. One for the first 256 bytes and one for the
last byte, #257. Also, we have in CFDM a crude but
useful compression technique. If more than two
spaces occur in a row, a control byte is recorded
and then a number telling how many spaces.
So, unless an entry is just very "wordy" it's not
going to have a great appetite as far as space =>
____________________________________________________
needed.
Note: A CFDM page is 16 lines of 53 characters. That
is 848 bytes. If your entry is 3 pages long and has
no spaces, it would be 2544 bytes. That would take
10 sectors (9 sectors = 2304 and 1 additional sector
for the remaining 204 bytes). So our sample entry
would take only 1 more sector of disk space than the
smallest BASIC file (that's 1 granule or 9 sectors).
Thanks for the question!

CoCoPRO! Solitaire RICK: Here is my solution to loading and running
the CoCcPRO! Solitaire GAME.
1. I have a 512K CoCoIII and a FD-502 Drive System.
2. Using TANDY's OS-9 Level2 System Disk, Boot OS-9
3. Type and <ENTER> MONTYPE R. Type and <ENTER>
Window.t80s. Remove the OS-9 Systems Disk.
4. Place the Solitaire GAME Disk into Drive /D0.
Type and <ENTER>: CHD /D0;CHX /d0/CMDS. Note the
space after CHD and CHX.
5. Type and <ENTER> Klondike. When the disk stops,
the Screen should Display the CARDS.
6. Use the TANDY Hi-Res Adapter (RIGHT PORT) and a
MOUSE.
7. This procedure works for me, and hopefully for
anyone desiring to play SOLITAIRE.
Thank You...Don. =*=

LOOKING FOR COCOMAX II Dear Rick,
Thanks for all the nice disks you sent - they
arrived in good shape. It will take me quite awhile
to BACKUP0 all of them. The set of Font disks was
for a COCOMAX II - I only have a Manual and so I
need a COCOMAX II disk to run it - is it possible to
get one?
I would have liked very much to have had enough
money to buy that color printer, but then again I
would also like to have a DS-69B DIGITIZER - only
wishful thinking!
I will be looking forward to see the new #24 issue,
and Bonus Disk too! =>

MUSIC FOR FASCINATION Hi Rick: The following is my answer to H. Allen
Curtis' request to augment his game by
adding a few bars of the song "FASCINATION" to his
enjoyable game to be heard when someone wins.
Here's one simple solution:
1. Change line 38 to read as follows:
38 HCOLOR3:HPRINT(34,1),SC:SC=SC+5:HCOLOR2:HPRINT
(34,1),SC:IFSC>204THEN HPRINT(13,14),"YOU'VE WON!!":
GOSUB100:RETURNELSERETURN
2. Add the following PLAY subroutine at the end of
the listing, as follows:
100 A$="L8;O3;GG#;O4;CD#;L2;G#;L4;G;L8;G#;L4;G"
110 B$="L8;O3;GG#;O4;CD#;L4;G#G;L8;G#;L4;GF;L8;
G;L2;F" =>
____________________________________________________
120 C$="O3;L8;AB-;O4;C#F;L4;O5;C#C;O4;B-G#FC#;L2;
C;O3;B-"
130 D$="L8;AB-;O4;CC#;L2;FG;L4;D#;L1;G#"
140 X$="XA$;XB$;XC$;XD$;"
150 POKE65496,0:PLAY X$:POKE65497,0:RETURNELSERET
URN
There, that's all there is to it unless you really
want to get fancy and put a 4-part harmony piece
from MUSIC3+ in the program.
The PLAY routine is certainly simple enough to work
with and, I feel, is adequate for this application.
I just couldn't resist fulfilling Allen's request.
Really enjoyed my visit with you and your family =>

RED BORDER HANGUPS I would like to confirm that John L. Daniels' tip on RED BORDER HANGUPS works for me. Since I joined CFDM with issue 14, I decided to get all of the back issues. When they arrived, I formatted enough disks to make my working copies. Then I began the backups (without a cold start) & stopped after 6 disks. (It was suppertime). I continued backups the next day for the remaining disks. The first 6 had varying #s of hangups; the remaining ones had none. I tried formatting some more disks on the day that issue 20 arrived & tried the backup right after formatting to prove the point again. RED BORDERS! I recopied after a cold start & the borders disappeared. Thanks John! It works for me. Herb Forger 88 Dry Hill RD Norwalk, CT O6851 =* |
RUN-N' GRAFIX ON MAG w/ENTRY WTR HEY RICK! Can a graphic file be programmed to run on the CFDM side of the disk when using ENTRY-WRITER, by just typing <g>? And what file type does it have to be in? I use ColorMax DELuxe for 512k as my graphics editing program and still don't understand how to fully use all of its graphics editing tools. Do you have any programs for converting graphics files from one type to another? I own a DS-69B from COCO-PRO and would like to include pics of the family and cartoons for the kids on CFDM or the program side of CFDM. Even though disk space is limited on the magazine side, I've noticed sometimes there are up to 5 cartoons or graphics presentations * YOUR COCO-FRIEND, COCO's INTO the FUTURE! *** LARRY *** => ____________________________________________________ RICK: Thanks for your question Larry. I wish it were a simple matter to put graphics on the magazine side of CFDM..but that's not the case at all. Let me try to explain the process and why. First the "why". The magazine side of CFDM is almost always jam packed. So the graphics you see "in" the magazine are relatively small files after they are compressed. (A hint here for those aspiring to see one of their pics "in" the magazine. Keep the pix as simple as possible. That means solid colors, little or no independent dots. Also vertical lines are more conducive to good compression than horizontal lines when alternating lines are of different color.) Due to the almost total memory usuage of CFDM's driver, NIB pictures cannot be used once you get past the => ____________________________________________________ cover picture. However, an older version of NIB, called SUPER CRAM, is compatible with running inside the magazine. This program is useful only with 1 or 2 gran pictures and is not as efficient as NIB. After "CRAMing" a picture I make a dummy entry using ENTRY WRITER. Then I write an assembly loader which is POKEd into the dummy entry. Next I must change the CFDM directory so that CUTILS can recognize that the entry is a ML file, not a text file. After that it's pretty simple!! Per a graphics transfer program, I don't have one or know of one. It would be a very nice program to have if anyone has the knowhow to write one. I do believe David Mills (VUMASTER) had the ability. =* |
THANKS! RICK:
Just wanted to let you know how promptly I received
responses to my request in Issue #19 for help in

Keiran Kenny challenged me to make one and sent the
plan from CoCo-Link Magazine. Am proud to say I
accepted the challenge and am now happily flipping
printer between Cokes 2 and 3. Thanks again Friends!

"WP.BAS" On the flip side of CFDM is a simple word
processor, "WP.BAS", I wrote while learning BASIC
programming. It has alot of bugs in it, but gets the
job done. I wanted a program to write a simple
letter without all the whistles and bells and
complicated configuring control codes for the
printer.
It is a short basic program written with alot of
"'s" in the program lines to leave room for editing
and adding of other functions that anyone can dream
up, such as, hot-keys, text buffer, tab key, disc
acess, etc.
WP.BAS only prints three lines at a time, so mis-
takes must be corrected before pressing the <ENTER>
key. It is setup for 2400 baud. Edit the program for
your printer before using. ENJOY the program and =>

21CARDX - ready-made magic! I guess every programmer has his favorite pro-
grams, and this is one of mine, if only because it
was one of the hardest I ever tried to write. I do
not care to think how many times I put it into the
too-hard box only to resurrect it again.
The first version was a PMODE4 program written
when I had only a CoCo 1.1 and a tape recorder. It
was published in the Australian CoCo-Link magazine.
The listing included a full graphic letter set and a
routine to put the text on the screen.
This version varies from the original only in
that it includes color and employs HPRINT to put
text on the graphic screen, except for card values.
Lines 60 to 90 contain the strings for the numerals
0 to 9 and for A, K, Q and J. I had to take this
route in order to print the card values in pos- =>
____________________________________________________
itions relative to graphic coordinates, as in lines
120 to 150. The values are expressed as F$(N) and
subroutine 170 puts them in position on the card
faces.
I vaguely remember a Rainbow article on position-
ing HPRINT texts by graphic coordinates rather than
strictly by multiples of eight. If you have heard of
this then glad to hear from you!
The program puts seven rows of three random cards
on the screen. Pick your card, type the column num-
ber, and watch how slick dealing CoCo picks 'em up
and lays 'em down without dropping a card!
After the third deal, CoCo goes through a hocus-
pocus routine and then displays the card you chose.

Defragmenting your disks Simply put, defragmenting a disk means putting all
the pieces of individual files back into an easily
accessable logical sequence. The advantages to this
are decreased file access wait time, and less move-
ment of the drive head. Imagine a 5 granule file.
You find a disk with 5 free granules on it and save
it. Those 5 grans could be anywhere on the disk.
DOS will find them, but in a worst case scenario,
the first gran. could be on track 0, the second
somewhere on track 14, the third on track 19, the
fourth on track 23 and the fifth on track 34. In
order to load that file, the drive must go all over
the disk!
DEFRAG.BAS will regroup all the files back into a
nice close format to speed up access. =>
____________________________________________________
Although DEFRAG reorganizes your floppies, it will
not change the actual programs on the disk. The
process does not take long, and as an added
bonus, DEFRAG will also alpabetize the directory.
DEFRAG requires a RAM disk (512k cocos only) in its
present form (although anyone with a little know-
ledge can make it run on two floppies only)
The RAM disk must be assigned as Drive 0, and the
floppy where the fragmented disk must be assigned
to drive 2. (Again, this is alterable)
DEFRAG 1. reads the FAT and displays it
2. obtains all the files from the directory
3. alphabetizes them
4. copies them off the disk into RAM =>
____________________________________________________
5. Then backs up the RAMdisk to the original
floppy.
I have tested it on several disks, and the process
does NOT destroy anything!
WARNING: DO NOT try to defragment the magazine side
of a CFDM disk. Rick does weird things
with the FAT. DO NOT defragment a
submission disk if the same side contains
magazine entries. (See note on Rick earlier
in this paragraph.)

MINESWEEPER Here's an adaptation of a neat little game found in
WINDOWS on MSDOS machines. Although simple in nature
it can be somewhat addicting. I hope you'll enjoy
MINESWEEPER.
The objective of the game is to "mark" the locations
of the ten bombs on the 100 square playboard. To
"mark" a location (square) just press the spacebar.
Of course it is necessary to deduct that a bomb is
at that location before "marking" it.
The way to find out is to uncover a square(s) to get
hints on what may be on adjoining squares. For
example, move the flashing cursor, using the arrow
keys, to any square that you wish to uncover. Now
press ENTER to uncover the square. If the square =>

is blank a number of other squares will also be
uncovered. If the square contains a number, then
you have a hint. If the number is 1, then the square
you uncovered is touching 1 and only 1 square with a
bomb. If the number is 5 then be careful, because
that square is bordering 5 squares with bombs. In
other words the number tells how many neighboring
squares contain bombs.
By the way you can "unmark" squares you previously
"marked" by placing the cursor on the "marked"
square and pressing the spacebar.
The program checks to see if you have uncovered a
bomb. In which case the game ends with you losing.
It also checks to see when you have "marked" ten =>

squares. If you have marked ten and they all contain
bombs, then you win the game. OTHERWISE you lose!
Some features of this game are:
- Assuring randomization of random numbers using the
technique noted in last issues "Picking a Random
Winner" program.
- Displaying the objective and rules on the screen.
- Using a few screen displacement pokes to "shake"
the screen whenever you hit a bomb.
- Using the high speed poke for quicker setup of the
game.
- Utilizing ON BRK GOTO and ON ERR GOTO commands to
reset the palette and to turn off the high speed
pokes.

PRINTALL - a PMODE4 screen dump. PRINTALL was included in a picture choice program
by a group of programmers well-known in Australia:
including Johanna Vagg and Grahame Pollock. I took
the routine from their program and rewrote it as a
stand-alone program. It produces a printout much
like that in Robert Allen Turner's DMP105A/BAS in
CFDM #20, but has a few extras.
If your picture is not in memory, you can load
one. The extension /BIN is understood unless you in-
clude another extension in the filename.
You can elect for Standard, Elite or Condensed
font. On my DMP130A I can use only standard font and
I get a somewhat elongated printout. On other DMP
series printers condensed may give you a better pro-
portion.
After you select your font you can select the =>

left margin (maximum 224 on a DMP130A). Printing
then commences.
Line 90 sets the baud rate at 2400. Change this
to suit your printer.

SUPERPUT 3 Finally, the third version of the SUPERPUT
graphics package.
For those new to SP, this is a set of super-
fast, super-powerful ML routines to be used as an
alternative to BASIC's HBUFF/HGET/HPUT commands.
These routines run circles around HPUT, and offer
more practical featurs. SP3 uses an easier-to-type,
more straight-forward syntax--and operates using
BASIC keywords--no EXECs or POKEs necessary. SP also
allows you more memory for your buffers, to let you
make the most of a 512k COCO3.
For those familiar with previous versions of
SP, the program file is self-installing--just load
it up and go. You also have new commands that
simplify page and buffer setup, an improved HBUFF.
=>
____________________________________________________
The new system also offers even more speed, and
fixes to some minor bugs.
SP3 also contains a new command #13 :
PUT with variable start row -- to show a portion of
a "tall" buffer within a limited vertical space and
scroll the buffer inside that area. This is by
special request from James C. Mills (sorry it took
so long-and I hope this what you meant in your
letter, so let me know what you think about it).
Included with the SP3.BIN file is the doc file,
SP3DOC.DAT (an ASCII file that can be read with
the READDOC program); a demo, SP3DEMO.BAS (which
includes the buffer page file R.SPT); and EDTASM+
source code, for anyone curious about SP3's inner
workings (suggestions/questions welcome).
ENJOY!! MADMIKE =*

HOUSE TELEWRITER-128 The COCO-TRADER |
SILVERTON HOUSE SILVERTON is a text adventure from Rainbow's 2nd
Book of Adventures. It was not a contest winner,
but from a players point of view, this little text
adventure is a "Jewel". It has more, different kinds
of puzzles (and normal problems) than any other, of
this type, that we (Wife, Nan and I) have played.
The adventures in Rainbow's first two adventure
books were available only on tape. A few will only
play from tape, but most (like Silverton) can be
transfered to disk.
The game parser is a standard verb-noun type,
with an occassional third word required. All words
must be completely typed out, except abbreviations
for the four directional moves (N,E,S,W).
There is no save feature, and a few TRAP DOORs in
the game will cause an auto-restart. The answers ->

to all of the puzzles, and problems are always the
same, so you can quickly return to wherever you were
before a TRAP DOOR "gotcha".
There are many clues and answers hidden through-
out the game, but sometimes you just have to use
your imagination to solve some of the problems.
Your TASK: Find DURANGO DAN's money (a dollar
sign - $), and safely leave the House.
When making a map, place the start location (a
RECEPTION ROOM) just below the center of a piece of
paper. Leave enough space to the North, East, and
West for four more rooms, and two more to the South.
It will not make-up a perfect 9X7 square, but there
are 43 total rooms.
Alas, as friend John Daniels reported in CFDM #18

TELEWRITER-128 I do some serious letter writing with my CoCo and my
mainstay word processor is Telewriter-128. It is
completely reliable and extremely easy to use. I
have never encountered an instance when this program
failed to work perfectly.
There are other word processors which have more
options and more desk top publishing capabilities,
but none of these are equal to Telewriter's speed
and simplicity.
T-128 has 2 main menus: one for disk access; the
other is for printing. The text editor allows nu-
merous commands which are executed by pressing the
CTRL key and another key. For example, CTRL + H
is the command for Help (on screen instructions). =>
____________________________________________________
One of the things I really like about these commands
is that they are all easy to remember (H=Help).
To delete a text character, you use the break key.
To move around the text, use the arrow keys. To
move around faster, hold the SHIFT key when pressing
an arrow key. To insert text, simply type (the
insert mode is the default). If you want to type
over text, simply toggle Insert by pushing CTRL + I.
T-128 also allows you to use some pretty sophistoca-
ted embedded codes for sending commands to the prin-
ter and changing the configuration of the text on
the page.
A couple things that T-128 does not have is the =>
____________________________________________________
capability to print in columns nor does it have a
spelling checker. Also, Telewriter will not use any
more than 128K; 512K is useless. It is possible but
so impractical to import graphics that it is a waste
of time to try to use graphics with Telewriter-128.
Nevertheless, when it comes to reliable, fast, and
easy-to-use word processing, Telewriter-128 is tops
in my estimation. I have used it for years and I
have never had it fail me in any way. Max-10 is
fancier; Simply Better has more capabilities; Word
Power can handle more text; but Telewriter-128 is
the fastest, most reliable, and easiest to use when
it comes to basic word processing such as writing a
letter or a report. It isn't the Cadillac or the
Rolls Royce, but it's a great Jeep!

The COCO-TRADER Every one else usually uses this column to review
a new disk game or Utility, but noooooooo,,not MAC
I have to be different! Our good friend Jim Sternett
has started something new in the way of CoCo Trade,
Barter, sell, steal or flat give-it-away sheet. I
have so far recieved 2 issues and it has grown in 2
issues! So if any CoCo friend has some extras or is
searching high and low for that one thing they
can't live without, subscribe to TRADER, send Jim
a letter and ask for the skinny on the TRADER, along
with our favorite DISK magazine these will keep the
COCO community together! By the way when you drop
that line or two to Jim make sure and tell him that
The COCO PACK RAT sent you! I have no idea why he
gave me that name, maybe because I HOARD CoCo stuff!

LEFTOVER "ROM" SPACE? COOLING TIP HELP MUSIC3+ -- BOOT MUSIC3+ -- HELP!!!?? Norm Barson - thanks! RAT TO NIB WANTED WHERE IS MUSIC3+ ?? |
| Back to top |
ANYMORE LEFTOVER "ROM"
SPACE? My ML program SUPERPUT3 occupies the memory area
$FE0C - $FDFF. This area is leftover space after
the Super BASIC "ROM". Since the COCO3 is in an
"all-RAM mode" most of the time, the BASIC ROMs are
actually in RAM, and thus they, and the unused space
between them, are modifiable. These leftover spaces
are near-perfect for ML programs, because BASIC
doesn't touch it and you don't have to reserve the
space with CLEAR or anything. Using this space is
also a good idea because it would be wasted other-
wise.
So, my question is: Where is the leftover space in
the other ROMS? I have SUPER BASIC UNRAVELLED, which
told me where the empty space in the Super BASIC ROM
was, but I lack the other UNRAVELLED books, so I do
not know where the other unused areas are. =>
____________________________________________________
Those little pieces of information would help me
with development of future versions of SUPERPUT, by
allowing me to extend its features without having to
use any "normal" BASIC program space--and thus
keeping SP's presence invisible and giving its users
one less detail to worry about.
One more thing, Rick -- thanks for the LOADM/SAVEM
access routines. These are exactly what I needed,
and will allow me to create load/save commands for
graphics buffers and screens, which will be included
in SUPERPUT4 -- THANK YOU!!!!

COOLING TIP Since I have been blessed with all of the help I get from Rick and many other CFDM Friends, I would like to share one thing I found our for myself! My 512K upgrade was overheating my CoCo3, so I bought a 12 volt DC cooling fan - RADIO SHACK # 273-243B and a 12 volt AC to DC transformer. I placed the fan on top of the CoCo3 - one does not need to install it inside - it works just fine. I can now draw pictures with the COCOMAXIII and not overheat. At this time I want to especially thank Floyd J. Keirnan for all of the wonderful help he has given. GOD BLESS THIS HAPPY FAMILY. HAROLD J. HELP I need help to find a graph program, either line
or bar, but not pie, so that I can title both x & y
axis. And, of course, I need a printer dump for it.
I have not been able to find anything suitable by
searching many issues of RAINBOW.

I NEED HELP OR BETTER YET INFORMATION ABOUT THE
USE OF THE "WAVEFORM" TO DETERMINE THE "SOUND" OF

KNOW THAT MUSCI3+ ONLY ALLOWS FOUR PART HARMONY. I
HAVE MANY SONGS WITH SINGLE NOTE MELODY SHEET MUSIC
THAT PROVIDE THE "HARMONY NOTES" TO BE USED.
FROM THESE QUESTIONS YOU CAN SEE THAT I HAVE A

Norm Barson - thanks! Wow! I am plodding my way through your very com-
prehensive three articles on CoCo Max 3 color mixing
and thanks very much for the trouble you took. I am
sure that other Friends will also benefit.
As you will note from my FOOLEM (CFDM #22), I
found a lazyman's way of tackling the problem for
now, but, be assured, I will give your articles my
earnest attention.
Another puzzle point: I seem to remember learning
at school that red, yellow and blue were "primary"
colors that could be mixed to produce all other col-
ors. A blue-yellow mix produced green but now we
talk of red-green-blue.
How come?

already know that! So....does anyone else have any

WHERE IS MUSIC3+ ?? GEORGE QUELHORST has wet my appetite for more
MUSIC to play on my CoCo! Along with the NEAT MUSIC
Disks that I obtained from ROBERT ALLEN TURNER and
those found on CFDM Disks by HERB SCHULER, RAYMOND
BERNEY, and ROY ATKINS. I also enjoyed using the CD
Player by LESLIE WALTZ!!!
Up until recently, I have done most of my tran-
scribing using the LYRA Program as I usually play my
music through a MIDI connection on my CASIO MT-260
Tone-Bank Keyboard. I'm not musically inclined, but
I do enjoy listening to good MUSIC.
I guess the QUESTION IS -- How do we get a copy
of the MUSIC3+ Program??
