"ABOUT CFDM"
Rick Cooper

COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who
still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with
that format exclusively.

A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong.
By providing a unique means of communication, maybe
old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our
knowledge and experiences!

The success of this effort depends on each one who
becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/
her two cents in the form of articles, programs,
opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will
all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the
manual with your starter kit for details on how to
submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =*

HOUSE IN THE SNOW
ARTHUR WILLIAMS (by Rick Cooper)

The cover picture for this special issue of CFDM, is
the work of Arthur Williams. Arthur is one of our
more talented artists and represents Australia in
our tribute to our out-of-country Friends.

This picture fits right in with our current weather
picture in the U.S.A. I'm sure Arthur created it
during his winter season (which occurs during our
summer season).

If you would like to contact Arthur, please use this
address:

GODFREY J. MOLL

Surely one of the most "active" Friends is Godfrey
Moll! I recently received this letter from Godfrey
and just had to share it with the Friends.

FRIEND RICK:

I'm just back from a 6,985 mile trip through the
Northwest and Southwest -- visited the Grand Canyon
for our 45th Anniversary -- then attended a 305th
Bomb Group Reunion in Salt Lake City -- off to our
son Larry and Carol's house in Mukilteo, WA for a
few weeks -- then to Reno and Las Vegas -- Carlsbad
Caverns - attended the AIRSHO '93 of the Confederate
Air Force in Midland, Texas -- I'm a COLONEL!!! Then
a few days at our daughter Karen and David's house
in San Antonio. Two grandchildren there -- =>

CFDM Issue #20 was forwarded to my sons address --
enjoyed the HARDCOPY -- today I received CFDM Issue
#21. I visited Terry Laraway while in Washington
State -- he has a super CoCo3 setup with a unique
operating system! He is also the owner of more Radio
Shack Color Computer STUFF than I've ever seen
before!!! I also stopped in Deming, New Mexico and
watched Art Hallock work at his CoCo3 to IBM system
to create HARDCOPY for Issue #21 !!!

We were on the ROAD from September 3rd till
October 15th!

  I'm enclosing a check for $39 to hopefully   =>

purchase a back-up BLUE STREAK ULTIMA -- which I use
to drive my STAR NX-1000 Rainbow Printer -- with the
EXTRA $2 being in payment for the COPY of "WHO'S
WHOM IN CFDM?" that Art sent to me -- LOVE IT!!!

If you're out of the Serial to Parallel Converter,
just put the money into my Account and I'm sure I'll
be looking for something more in the future.

Haven't really had time to look at Issues #20 and
#21, but will do so shortly -- plan to stay HOME for
a few weeks. I certainly appreciate all that YOU
have done for us CoCoNuts!!!

Atlanta CocoFest
Dale Kramer;

The highlight of my involvement with Cocos was
attending my first CocoFest on Oct. 2 & 3, 1993.
I had asked Rick if I could hang around his
booth at the Fest so I could have a base from which
I could go exploring. He offered to put up with me
if I would help man the booth. The stage was set for
my adventure!
I hope that this article will encourage others
to support all events and clubs that they can. In a
nutshell, I won 11 prizes in hourly drawings ; sold
30 extra Rainbows, an Ochestra 90-CC, 1200 baud
modem, DCM-Pak, and a box of ROM-PAKs ; and bought
a 3.5 & 5.25 80-track drives for about $43, a S/S
PAK for $5, a 0k 2-Meg memory board for $80, the
Basic Uraveled set for $15, and some Fest T-shirts!
                                                 =>
____________________________________________________

Some of the people I met were R.C. Smith, John
Daniels, L. E. Padgett (Adventure Survivors), Alan
Dages (who handed out the prizes), Eugene Adams,
Tony (DISTO) DiStefano, Tony Podraza(Glenside Club),
Ken Fish & Keith Houston (Pres. & Vice-Pres. of the
Atlanta Computer Society-ACS), Boise Pitre, Frank
Swygert(Farna), and Andre Lavelle(Sbug). Whew!
The first three people above plus Rick Cooper and
myself gave CFDM a presence at the Fest where many
new members joined up. I did not get to meet all who
showed up as it was a busy time Saturday.(EGAD!)
Ricks wife and oldest daughter manned the booth
while he and the two youngest gave a seminar on Disk
Magazines. Rick annouced during the seminar that he
would be offering the SUNDOG software through Ricks
Computer Ent.!                              =>

Finally, Sunday afternoon came and people started
slowly leaving. I will return here next year. I hope
you will be there!
                     Dale Kramer

----------------------------------------------------
RICK: Thanks for the report Dale! It was GREAT to
see you and the other Friends at the Fest. Dale is
a little modest in his relationship to the RCE booth
at the Fest! I don't think we could have managed
without Dale's assistance. Thanks Dale!

CATTRAX CONTEST COMPLETE!
CFDM

The CATTRAX contest created by Friend Jim Bennett is
now complete. All we need is to decide the winner.
As I write this (October 22nd) there's still a few
weeks left for entries to arrive. We've already
received a few and they all look correct to me!

Jim and I are really looking forward to seeing who
will win the CATTRAX statue. Jim has promised to
send the statue to CFDM headquarters so that I can
get a picture of it. I'll try to get a facsimile to
all the Friends in a near future mailer. Thanks for
all your hard work Jim! A number of the entries
commented "how enjoyable this contest was"!

CFDM is very fortunate to have a talented and giving
Friend like Jim Bennett! And we're looking =>

MAX-10 BORDERS, BOXES, + + + + !
Jumpin' Jim Bennett

In the last issue of CFDM I advertised a set of 6
borders and 2 boxes that I had created for use with
Max-10. Well, I really got carried away with this
project and, as everyone who ordered the borders and
boxes knows, the disk also has 40 frames, scrolls,
ribbons, designs, etc. on the flip side!

I'm sorry I didn't think of creating these back when
Max-10 was selling like crazy! I think I could have
made myself some money! They look pretty darn good!

This collection of borders, boxes, etc. will make it
possible for you to really improve the appearance of
any document that you create with Max-10. To use
these graphics with Max-10, all you have to do is
load one or more of them onto a separate page and =>
____________________________________________________

use the 2-column mode to combine them with text. The
boxes and frames can be resized to fit around any
block of text. Titles look especially good when set
off by a box or frame.

I'm asking for $5 to cover the cost of the disk, the
8 page documentation, and mailing. If you like to
use Max-10, I know that you will be delighted to get
this collection.

THIEVERY
********
I don't know whether you realise it, but computers
are fifth on the thieves wanted list. I suppose gold
bullion, cash and jewellery are the top three. A
kind of top of the pops or the bane of the cops.
100 million worth of computer hardware stolen last
year which is hardly peanuts in anyone's language.
Is it true that thieves recently broke into a
Bournemouth office and stole all their computers;
when they looked at them in daylight they realised
they were Amstrads and took them back?

I read a report that members of the Boston
Computing Society had a smashing good time recently.
For years they had been paying storage fees for old
mainframe computers and other dinosaurs. Then some-
one had the idea (after a bad day at the office?)
that they could take out their anger and frustration
and at the same time create a fund raiser, by
staging a form of demolition derby similar to
smashing up old bangers or old upright pianos which
was the vogue a year or two back.
Participants in the event paid $5 for five minutes
to give these antiquated computers a pounding. The
crash! Bang! Wallop was evidently enjoyed by all and
the money raised went towards providing free PC
consultancy to voluntary organizations! A very
laudable effort!                              =>

There's only one thing. If I see anybody coming
round to my place flexing his muscles and with anger
and frustration in his eyes, it will be a case of

Helpdesk gives a typical example of a crisis
situation. "My computers seized up! What's wrong
with it? I tried pressing everything and it doesn't
respond at all.""Does it have anything at the bottom
of the screen?" the caller is asked. "Wait a moment
and I'll check."Then an embarassed voice comes back,
"Oh! Yes. At the bottom it says "Keyboard locked -
press F10 to release!" ...Computers should be.......

NEWS & VIEWS

I see that the Software Warehouse has opened in
Birmingham with a fresh approach to the selling of
software (what else?)
It's a 'try before you buy' outlet for major soft-
ware (by 'major' they usually mean software which
costs at least twice the price of the computer!).
They say that more than 300 products are available
for testing and customers can book a machine for a
whole day!
I've a different offer if anyone is interested,
for a tenner you can book my machine for a day and
at the end of the day I'll give you the software!

If you remember I said last month that I didn't
have a backup for my DRAGON 64 and UP-2-DATE rather
teetered on the brink for a while before the last
issue. Well, you would have remembered if you'd been
paying attention!
You'll be pleased to know that I now also possess

ABOUT THIS MONTH'S ARTICLES
RICK COOPER

Several months ago our good Friend Ray Smith of
Great Britain sent me 3 issues of his UP-2-DATE disk
magazine. Ray is the editor and publisher of this
disk magazine for the DRAGON computer. The DRAGON
was produced a number of years ago and is very much
similar to our CoCo 2. However there are some
differences that make the two machines and their
software somewhat imcompatible. Because of these
differences I really never expected to be able to
view UP-2-DATE...but........

Ray took the time to rewrite three issues so that
they could be almost entirely compatible to the
CoCo 3. When I decided to dedicate CFDM issue #22
to our out-of-country Friends, I really wanted to
offer one of the issues as a Bonus Disk. =>
____________________________________________________

However, UP-2-DATE, as provided to me, requires
512K of memory and the use of ram disks. Since some
of our Friends do not have access to these options,
I had to decide to just reprint some of the articles
and drop the idea of the Bonus Disk. By the way, I
would like to thank Ray for giving me permission to
offer this material to the Friends!

All the remainder of the entries in this section are
from UP-2-DATE. I have also included one graphic.
You'll find it in the ART GALLERY section. The
titles of all UP-2-DATE entries are enclosed with
dashes. I hope you will enjoy them!

If you have 512K and ram disks and would like to
have a copy of the three disks, send me $6 and =>
____________________________________________________

I'll be glad to make you a set. I'll also see that
Ray receives some compensation for his contribution.

Here's a sample of the graphics from issue #10 of
UP-2-DATE, the disk magazine from Great Britain for
the DRAGON computer. Actually this picture was in
the PMODE 4 format and I (Rick) used TRANSPIX, from
UNBELIEVABLE OFFER #3, to transfer it to the HSCREEN
so I could NIB it. Please RUN "GALLERY" to see this
wonderful picture!

BAYVIEW
Keiran Kenny

After an operation on my left hand, I found
typing very difficult, but I could use a mouse and
CoCo Max 3 so, during a week, I made more pictures
than I had made in several years. BAYVIEW is the
best of a bad lot.
The palmtrees in BAYVIEW were taken from the CoCo
Max 3 GLYPHIC file and the sailing boat is from the
CoCo Graphic Designer Plus library of minipix.
The scene is quite imaginary. I began by drawing
the verdant background hills. The emerald sea color
is a mix of light blue and light green obtained by
modifying a fine texture pattern.
A color mix like this will show fairly uniformly
if you mix two light colors or two dark colors, but
it will show grainy in a light-dark mix.
                                              =>

You can use the paint roller to paint over a col-
ormix area if the outline is whatever color you have
selected for an outline (the outer rectangle on the
color selection display). Otherwise it will run all
over the screen. I just love that UNDO! =*

KEIRAN KENNY (by RICK COOPER)

There's no real documentation for this picture. A
few months back, Keiran Kenny sent this picture in
it's original CM3 format. He said he could not NIB
the picture. It was too large; about 10 granules.
Well, I managed to NIB it and I hope everyone will
be able to see it with the GALLERY viewer provided.
Thanks for the wonderful picture Keiran!

FOOLEM act like an artist.
Keiran Kenny

I have never had the honor of being hung among
the Rembrandts and Rubens in Amsterdam's Municipal
Museum and I'm afraid that if they ever catch me
near the joint they may be tempted.... .
However, I hope you like this demo of how this
unartistic artist manages to get some very profess-
ional effects the easy way.
I rarely try to draw or copy an object because I
have no ability as a draftsman and my results end up
looking nothing like the original. As illustrated, I
just start off with a wriggly line and let my brush
roam free from there.
Just now and then I am pleased with a picture,
and the rest end up in the trash can. =*

COCOMAX-3, HOUSESNO and CHURCHYD are scenes from an
English magazine called "THIS ENGLAND". SNAKE, BOOT
and ANGYBOY are comic drawings I hope you can use
them.

RICK: Thanks Arthur. BOOT is in this issue. ANGYBOY
appeared last issue. HOUSESNO is our cover picture
and CHURCHYD is in the ART GALLERY. We'll try to get
the SNAKE in later.

BIOGRAPHICAL
RAY SMITH

I find it difficult to write about myself.
I don't know whether its just a trait of the English
or whether its my own inate modesty - some say I've
got a lot to be modest about!
I was a Mental Welfare Officer in the National
Health Service and when I retired in 1984, I was
still active in my professional association and
became Secretary of a local Voluntary Group, but
wanted something else to help keep the old grey
cells stimulated, so I bought a Dragon 64.
Although I didn't know it at the time, a computer
was to eventually dominate my leisure activities. It
was a pretty inauspicious start, as within weeks of
my purchase Dragon Data went into liquidation, and I
thought the Dragon scene would quickly fold its
tents and steal away. But no! =>
____________________________________________________

Here we are, nearly 10 years later, and the Dragon
is just as active as ever. Not as many members in
the National Dragon Users Group, its true (there
were over 3,000 at the peak), but still an active
number and over 60 read the disk magazine Up-2-date,
which isn't too bad.
In the meantime, I bought myself a Coco1, then a 2,
and finally a 512k Coco3, with 3 disk drives
attached, one 40/80 switchable and one 80 track 3 &
1/2 inch and all double sided, plus a Disto II
controller (I use OS9 for word processing etc) and a
Star LC10C printer which is the English version of
the NX1000C I believe. Then there are things like
the Multipack which I no longer use and light pens,
which seem to have gone out of fashion. I can't use
a TV, so use a colour monitor (Sonica). =>
____________________________________________________

Most of my computing time is spent on the disk mag,
UP-2-DATE, but I enjoy reading CFDM, as Tandy never
imported the Coco3 into the UK, all my Coco interest
is focussed Stateside, and I have subscribed to the
new Micro 6809 mag, although to date (11/Sept) I
have not yet received the August issue (if it has
ever hit the streets!).
I wish I could support Rick more, as I know from
bitter experience the amount of work involved!
On the personal level, I have a wife, Joyce who is
a professional artist and now paints purely for
pleasure (although she'll tell you she always did!),
one son and one grandson. I live in a small (by
American standards) chalet style house with distant
views of Poole Harbour at 5 GLEN ROAD, PARKSTONE,
POOLE, DORSET BH14 0HF, UK. (Phone 0202 744688) =*

COLIN NORTH
COLIN NORTH

Hi from sunny Queensland, Australia.

I was born in England just before World War II and
my family came out to live in Australia at the start
of 1952.

I lived in South Australia until I moved to Queens-
land about 20 years ago. I am a toolmaker by trade.
I have a wife, Lesley and two daughters, Kylie, 18
years old and Bree-ann, 15 years old.

I bought my first CoCo about 9 years ago and now
have a CoCo3 512K, double 40 track disk drive, CM8
monitor, and an Epson LX400 printer. I prefer to
programme in BASIC, but know a little about OS9 and
machine language.                           =>

It's the middle of winter over here at the moment

Hear is a little background information on yours
truly for inclusion in the next CFDM.

I was born when I was very young, July 29, 1934, at
the Civic Hospital in Ottawa, the capital of Canada.
Ottawa is in the province of Ontario. I am married
and have two lovely daughters and a wife who really!
understands me. (After 32 years that's not
surprising.)

In 1951, I enlisted in the CNDN, army, as a para-
trooper and served in Korea (the land that God
forgot) and was released from the army in 1954
(enlisted under age).

                                           =>
____________________________________________________

I reside in a village about 30 miles south of the
city of Ottawa.

I'm retired from government service about 35 years
service as draftsman (droughtsman).

About 5 years ago I bought my first CoCo. For
approximately 3 years I simply bought hardware/
software for the CoCo and did nothing with it (too
busy). Now that I am using it more often I really
appreciate what a great little machine it is.

Rick, thank again for all your effort in keeping the
CoCo alive and well.

MARIO LECOURS
MARIO LECOURS

Hi, my name is Mario. I am a single guy born and
raised in the small "town" of Ste-Justine here in
Quebec, Canada. (p.o.: 2000 citizens).
I am 25 years old, live with my mom (divorcee) and
my brother, Marco, 22 years old. I have been working
as a mechanic (buses) for 3 years now, and a bus
driver for 6 months now.
Before working as a mechanic, I was a programmer
for a private company in Quebec City (PROGISYS INC.)
for those of you who know what we were doing.
My favorite summer hobby is to do "Demolition
Derby" with BIG Chrysler and BIG G.M. (year '74-'78)
cars. I spend almost all my summer time preparing
those cars for Sunday's Demolition Derby. (Ordinary
we have at least one Demolition Derby every Sunday,
starting at the end of May 'til September.) =>
____________________________________________________

My favorite winter hobby is to spend my time at my
CoCo 3. I'm doing programming for myself, and
sometimes for my friends out here.
I'd like to mention that my system is a CoCo 3,
512K, 2 single-sided full height drives, a DMP 105
printer, and a multi-pak that is not connected to my
CoCo 3, 'cause it's not upgraded. I also have a CoCo
3 128K, a CoCo 2 64K ext. and a Commodore 64 with
one 1541 drive. My knowledge as a programmer is
probably 6 in a scale of 1 to 10. I think my big
problem with programming is a lack of imagination
for creating new ideas.
I was a RAINBOW subscriber since Nov. '84 and as
you could read "RAINBOW renewal" in the FORUM
section, you will see why I dropped the Marvelous
Mag. RAINBOW... At least what it was then ... =>
____________________________________________________

Now, I'm joining you "CFDM" 'cause I really like
the way it is. And I'd really like to meet all new
kinds of people. (You don't know, but out here, in
STE-JUSTINE, I'm all alone.) What I know about the
CoCo is what I learned by myself, in the RAINBOW and
with my studies. I studied to be a programmer-
analyst in high school in Levis-Lauzon, Quebec.
I'm hoping to find all great comments, articles,
programs from you. I'm actually working on a card
game right now and I'm hoping to send it to you in
the fall, if I have time to finish it.
I like it "CFDM" a lot, and I'd like to Thank Rick
for what he is doing for us. He's keeping our CoCo
alive and what a task (I know how hard it is). He
deserves all my gratitude and long live the CFDM.

I am 16 years old and have been programming the CoCo
for as long as I can remember. I started on a CoCo1
with 32K of memory and a television set with only a
tape recorder to save programs on. I then moved all
the way up to a CoCo3 with 128K (after having got a
disk drive (FD502)). I really enjoyed the advanced
graphics and wider text screens, but when I got OS-9
Level II I was disappointed that I needed 512K to do
anything interesting. I then got the Memory Upgrade
and have discovered some interesting pokes that
allow Basic to look at the extra memory since. I
would be happy to share any of my knowledge with
others.

I must just write and say what a good idea of Scott
Baldridge in Issue 16.
Those of us who live 'out country' as Rick likes to
refer to us, have no opportunity to access Delphi -
or rather the opportunity is there but the cash will
not stretch to it - it would probably require a
second mortgage!
I for one will have a dive into my archives and see
what I can come up with on the PD front - and there
have been items too numerous to mention that have
been listed in the Rainbow as being available on
Delphi - items that I could only drool over!
I hope Scott gets a good response - its a very
worth while effort he's making on our behalf! RS

RAINBOW Renewal
MARIO LECOURS

Hi there. My name is Mario Lecours from Quebec,
Canada. I'm writing to show you what I wrote to

To Whom it may concern,

HI! there, I am Mario Lecours subscriber #####.
As written on the sticker of the January '93 Rainbow
Issue I am suppose to receive my last one for the
February '93 Issue, if I do not renew my subscrip-
tion.

First I got some points to mention before I take
a decision on that.
Why should I Renew??? That's the question. =>

1.) Why I wrote letters to be published and
never got one in the magazines? (I wrote at
least 4 letters and the only response I had
is the one you sent me telling me that you
had received my letters and that it could
take 2 or 3 months for publishing). Well let
me tell you that it's been almost a year now
I sent you my last letter and ...
    2.) I'm a "RAINBOW" subscriber since NOV. '84

the 1st and 2nd Simulation and Adventure

3.) Why should I renew for a newspaper of 20
pages for $38 U.S. funds?.. When I first
subscribe to "THE RAINBOW", the one year
subscription was $38 U.S. for a well over
200 pages. That's ridiculous. That should
be in the range price of $3.80 a year as
        for the quantities given.
                      at first $38.00 = 200 pages
                         now $ 3.80 = 20 pages

programs proposed in the old issues?

RAINBOW Renewal Part 2
MARIO LECOURS

(Continued from RAINBOW Renewal)

Sorry to say all that, but it comes from deep
inside fo what I think of you for a couple of years
now and I think that your last year Rainbow was the
worst you made.
Your point of view of OSK, 68000 ... is maybe the
COCO's dead. It should not belong in your magazine.
At first, "THE RAINBOW" was for the CoCo Community,
(CoCo 1 then CoCo 2 then CoCo 3) not for those High
Class money maker... Why should any CoCo users have
to drop their CoCos just because you tell them some
good stories about those machines (OSK...)?
You know money don't grow on trees (you've seen
your Magazine 300+ pages drop to a 20 pages or so..)
So ask youself a good question about what you're =>

delivering to your subscribers. You're fooling them
100%, just like Radio Shack who can't give us any
support. They are doing the same thinkg as you. They
dropped us just like garbage. They're telling us
that we should not invest in our little marvel. They
tell us that we should get the compatible computers
and stop investing in our CoCo's.
Sorry, but enough is enough. That's why you are
going to lose another subscriber. Hope you could do
better for the next years, but I won't be there to
see... I really loved "THE RAINBOW" a lot, all that
good stuff, but by now I'd say "You lost big
believing from an avid CoCo user".
All I got to say by now is...
(Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Maxi Mea Culpa)
                                             =>

Notice anything unusual about this issue? That's
right, most of the entries on the MAGAZINE/SIDE and
all the material on the PROGRAM/SIDE came from our
out-of-country Friends!

THIS ISSUE (#22) HAS BEEN DEDICATED TO OUR GOOD AND
FAITHFUL FRIENDS FROM CANADA, AUSTRALIA, HOLLAND,
GREAT BRITAIN, MEXICO, AND ARGENTINA!

            THANKS OUT-OF-COUNTRY FRIENDS!!

This issue certainly reflects the varied interests
of these Friends!

This has been quite a month. Although this special
issue has been in the works for about three =>

months, I found myself struggling to get it all
together by my deadline. To those who don't know:
I try to finish each issue by the 25th of the
preceding month. Then off it goes to my eight editor
Friends for debugging. I really appreciate their
efforts in helping me provide you with a good issue!

Also, you'll be interested to know that the Cooper
family and CFDM headquarters have had a visit from
another CoCo Friend! This third visitor was the
MUSIC MAN, Herb Schuler, from New Jersey. Herb and
his wife were just passing thru on their way to
Tennessee for a class reunion. I'm so glad to have
had the opportunity to meet this fine gentleman and
I'm sorry our visit was so short (I was on my way
out of town)! Come again Herb. =>

Another issue is come and gone and the CoCo Friends
still have the strongest organization remaining in

GOOD FRIENDS!!!!

OUR TRIP TO THE ATLANTA FEST
RICK COOPER

For the second straight year I attended the Atlanta
Fest. I really enjoyed last year's fest and this
year was even more fun!!

This time I was accompanied by my wife, Donna, and
my three daughters, Kristin, Kasey, and Kayla. We
really enjoyed ourselves. It was kind of like a
mini-vacation...but, it was quite a bit of work too!

We left Liberty about 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1
and drove to within 20 miles of Atlanta. Early the
next day we drove to the Fest location and lounged
around the lobby while we waited to set-up our
booth. We were delighted to have Dale Kramer meet
us there and help man our booth. Dale demonstrated
the COCOPRO! software and helped Donna with =>

questions about the products when she didn't know
the answers. Thanks Dale!!

We also had the pleasure of seeing some of our good
CoCo Friends. We enjoyed seeing John Daniels again!
When we took our vacation to Florida this summer, we
stopped in Chatanooga and John gave us a tour of the
new Tennessee Aquarium. I wish we could have visited
longer in Atlanta!

I also had an opportunity to chat briefly with L.E.
Padgett, R.C. Smith, Jack Diehl, Karl Sefcik, James
Moore, Wayne Daughters, Clyde Gano, Frank Daniels,
Kraig Scott, Roy Shoaf, Terry Dodson, Andre LaVelle,
Frank Swygert, Ken Fish, Alan Dages, Tony Podraza,
and the many others who visited our booth. =>

These are truly wonderful folks!!

One highlight for me was giving a seminar (for the
first time). My subject was supposedly "Putting
together a disk magazine". It turned out to be more
of a history on how CFDM came about and how we were
having a lot of fun with it. The fifteen or so folks
who attended, treated me Great and I enjoyed it
immensely. Some came by our booth and joined up!!

At closing time, on Saturday evening, we received a
helping hand from Andre, Dale, Tony, Ken, and others
in getting our stuff back to the van. We decided to
travel up the road a few miles, get a nice dinner,
do a little more traveling, and then rest for the
night. We got home at 4 p.m. Sunday. GREAT TRIP!!=*

I recovered the hidden files on CFDM #18 but
unfortunately have not been able to load WATERFAL
and SELFPORT with NIBSHOW or any other program to
load NIB files. Still, I was impressed that you were
able to convert my 12-granule CM3 file to a NIB file
but I have not been able to repeat your performance.
That applies to FIRSTSNO/CM3 (11 granules) too.
Thanks for the packet of disks as runner-up prize
in the HRIDDLE3 competition. I am more accustomed to
coming in as an also-ran in competitions.
I can certainly recommend your ready-flipped disk
offer, especially for single-drive users like me. I
used to do my own hole-punching but I noticed that
if a disk bombed out on me it was a homemade flippy.

COCO CLIPART
RAY SMITH

Dear Rick,
Thanks for featuring the CLIPART program in issue 19
but as you know it is really Coco2 material - as it
uses the PMODE4 screen.
Dave Riley and I wrote it on the Dragon and the
PMODE4 screen was the highest definition available.
Neither of us are very au fait with the HSCREEN
functions, memory locations, etc on the Coco3, as
the only memory map we have available is based on
the Coco2.
It is a big handicap from the Coco3 point of view
not being Stateside, as we cannot get to any of the
'FESTs and chat with other users, pick up any of the
many bargains available, access Delphi etc.
Especially access Delphi, where so many queries have
been unravelled, both RSDos & OS9.           =>

I wonder whether any of your readers feel
sufficiently interested to convert the CLIPART
program to use the HSCREEN?
You have the source file for the machine code, or if
anyone cares to they can contact me for a copy.

Keiran Kenny

Since my last letter, I have had my "carpal tunnel
syndrome" attended to by a plastic surgeon: no big
deal, as I was home again in time for morning cof-
fee. But I had a week with only one hand in use.
Typing was difficult, but I found I could use a
mouse. So I spent the week experimenting with CoCo
Max 3.

I drew more pictures in a week than I would normally
draw in a year. On the disk is BAYVIEW, the best of
a bad lot in my opinion.

I am now a two-fisted typist again but my left hand
has to be rested after I have typed a few lines. In
a few months I have to go back for the same opera-
tion on my right hand. =>

ENJOYING HIS NEW STAR NX-2420!
PAUL L. WOLF

The following excerpt came from a letter I received
today from Friend Paul L. Wolf. Paul recently
purchased a Blue Streak and a Star NX-2420 from
Rick's Computer Enterprise. The letter featured
6 colors and at least 2 type-fonts.

Dear Rick,

....Rick, the NX-2420 which you sent is the greatest
thing in printers that my family ever had.

It was so easy to set up I couldn't believe it.

Within an hour after the UPS delivery man was here
it was up and running.
                                          =>

Of course there was the small matter of configuring
my current programs to run on it.

And the manual was written in such a manner that
even a person of my limited ability can understand
it.

As you can see, I am making these changes (colors)
as a demonstration, and it is really no problem.

Thanks for the speedy service and help that you
offered.

                          Sincerely,
                          Paul L. Wolf

EPROM FOR TANDY FD 502 DRIVES
COLIN NORTH

I have noted that a lot of people from the CFDM have
got the Tandy FD 502 disk drive. If these people
want to have 40trk double sided drive, I can get an
EPROM burned for them to replace the TANDY con-
troller chip. The price is $30 Australian + $2
postage. Maybe you can mention it in the next CFDM
because it's a shame to use these drives as single
sided when they have two heads.

I've been so busy that it's hard for me to just sit

of CFDM to catch up!!! I've enjoyed making funny
cartoons...It feels great to see someone smile or
laugh. I think we have so much unhappiness in this
world that it would be nice to see a smile or a

Rick, Thanks for putting so much of your time in

a lot of us out there who wouldn't give up that
easily. Hope we will all help to keep our computer

POOR PLANNING
- UNKNOWN

A ham is sitting at his desk answering a letter from
his insurance company.

Dear Sir,
I am writing in response to your request for ad-
ditional information in block number three of the
accident reporting form. I put "poor planning" as
the cause of my accident. You said in your letter
that I should explain more fully, and I trust that
the following detail will be sufficient:
I am an Amateur Radio Operator. On the day of the
accident I was working alone on the top section of
my new 80 foot tower. When I had completed my work,
I discovered that I had, over the course of several
trips, brought up about 300 pounds of tools and
spare hardware. Rather than carry the material =>
____________________________________________________

down by hand, I decided to lower the items in a
small barrel by using a pulley which was attached to
the top of the tower.
Securing the rope at ground level, I went to the
top of the tower and loaded the tools and material
into the barrel. Back on the ground level, I untied
the rope, holding tightly to insure a slow descent
of the 300 pounds of tools. You will note in block
number 11 of the accident report that I weigh 155.
Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground
so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot
to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded
at a rather rapid rate of speed up the side of the
tower. At the 40 foot level I met the barrel coming
down. This explains my fractured skull and broken
collarbone. Slowed only slightly, I continued =>
____________________________________________________

my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of
my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley
which accounts for my broken hand and fingers.
I regained my presence of mind and was able to
hold onto the rope. At the same time, however, the
barrel of tools hit the ground and the bottom of the
barrel fell out. Now devoid of the tools the barrel
weighed only 20 pounds. As you can imagine, I began
a rapid descent down. At the 40 foot level I met the
barrel coming up. This accounts for my two fractured
ankles and lacerations on my legs and body.
The encounter with the barrel slowed me enough to
lessen my injuries when I fell on the pile of tools.
Only 3 vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry to report
that as I lay there on the tools looking up at the
barrel..I again lost track and let go of the rope.=*

Assembly Save Screen (WIDTH40)
MARIO LECOURS

Hi! Suppose you are in a program and you wish to do
some kind of window environment and that you would
like to save the screen before displaying your
supposed window. I maybe got a neat routine for you.
But I'll need a little of your help cause if doesn't
appear to work with big programs. (I'd like to warn
you before you lose some interesting things.)

The programs I enclose are:
1- SSCREEN.BAS -an ASCII BASIC that shows you
the M.L. routine. (You can RUN
it to make a copy of
                                     SSCREEN.BIN.)
2- SSCREEN.BIN -the Save Screen routine.
3- DEMO.BAS -shows you how it works.
                                           =>
____________________________________________________

I'm new to assembly and I'd like to get information
that could get this neat routine to work at 100%.
I know it is an interesting routine but I don't know
where I missed something.

Just look at the program SSCREEN.BAS (you can RUN
this program that makes SSCREEN.BIN that you can use
it. If you can find the cure just send it back to
CFDM. I'm sure that someone will know how to get it
to work.

You can get it to work, (not at 100%) but you can
RUN the DEMO I included and you'll see what you can
do with this routine. I didn't get this routine from
any sources. I built it from scratch and from
sources I could find everywhere. Hope to get a =>

I have written a disassembler under BASIC and I
thought that other users may be interested in it.
I have included instructions in the file called

DISASMDT.BAS the data file generator

I welcome any feedback concerning this program.
I can be contacted at PO Box 640, Olds, Alberta,

H2RAYLIN: with NIB & CM3 saves
Keiran Kenny

H2RAYLIN is much the same as RAYLINIB that was
on CFDM Vol 1 #10 but with an extra in that when you
press CLEAR to quit the graphic screen you get a
menu choice: abort, save your picture as a NIB file
or save it as a CM3 file. See lines 750 to 780.
I have seen a lot of fine pictures done with Tom
Lehane's RAYLINE programs and have colored some of
them with CoCo Max 3.
In my own unartistic efforts I have found it best
to do interim saves in NIB format and CM3 saves only
when I was certain that my picture was finished.
Lines 2000 to 2140 are a very abbreviated extract
from Colorware's TRANSLAT. I would have liked to get
rid of a lot of the data statements in lines 2150 to
3030, but would-have-liked-to is as far as I got.
Would any Friend like to try? =>

H2RAYPIX/NIB was saved as a CM3 file and colored

PEEK(135) for movement control
Keiran Kenny

There are several ways of using keyboard input
to effect movement on a graphic screen. One of the
most familiar is the use of keyboard rollover tables
to move a cursor on the screen using a statement
like IFPEEK(341)=247THENY=Y-1.
If you hold down the UP-ARROW the horizontal cor-
dinate, Y, will diminish in value and the cursor
will move upwards on the screen. The program POINTER
takes a different route.
If you press a key while a program is running,
the ASCII value of that key will be stored in memory
position 135 and stay there until you press another
key.
POINTER presents a circle with a pointer rotating
in steps of 6 degrees. A single tap on the right
arrow will give continuous clockwise rotation. =>
____________________________________________________

A tap on the left arrow will give anti-clockwise
rotation. Toggle the arrow keys for smooth changes
of direction. Press any other key to stop the rot-
ation.
The position of the pointer will be continuously
updated in the text at top left. The pokes in line
30 enable each change in the HPRINT text to over-

FIVE ML DISK UTILITIES
Roy Atkins

FIVE ML DISK UTILITIES is a package of programs
from DANASOFT. Below is a brief description:

  BIG DISK - 360K Capacity *
  DOUBLE40 - 40 Tracks Each Side *
  CONVERT/DSK - Formats Tracks 35-79 Only *
QUIKDRIV/6MS - Sets Fast Drive Stepping Rate
QUIKDRIV/30M - Fast Drive Shut Off

      * Double-sided Drive RS-DOS 1.1 or 2.1

SET FEED - Select Printer Line Spacing

                                            =>
____________________________________________________

BIG DISK - Provides basic users with the same
             double-sided advantage enjoyed by OS-9
users. When installed it considers both
sides of a double-sided drive as 1 big
             80-track drive (158 granules).
DOUBLE40 - This program sets basic to recognize 40
tracks on each side of a double-sided
drive. Each side of the disk will have
             its own directory.
CONVERT/DSK - This program formats an existing 35
track disk that is in use from the
36th to the 80th track without
disturbing the contents of the first
              35 tracks.
                                          =>

____________________________________________________

QUIKDRIV/6MS - Some drives can run at a faster head
stepping rate. This utility sets the
6 millisecond head stepping rate in-
stead of the slower 30 ms rate.
QUIKDRIVE/30M - If you do a lot of disk swapping or
copying this utility stops the drive
in about a quarter of a second.
SET FEED - This is a utility program in basic
to set your printer for spacing and
                characters per line for directory
                printouts.
 These programs are available from:DANASOFT,P.O.BOX
124,STATION"A",MISSISSAUGA,ONT.L5A 2Z7. If no longer
available please let me know as I can send then to
you.                                      =*

SUNDOG SYSTEMS "PHOTON"
RICK COOPER

On the front cover of the documentation for PHOTON
is a little caption that states:

               "It's too Addictive"

That summarizes why I, rarely a game-player Rick, am
writing this review of PHOTON! After receiving the
SUNDOG SYSTEMS software, I felt I must at least boot
up each package to make sure it would RUN. The game
PHOTON immediately caught my attention and I spent
an overly long period of time checking it out. (I
have also returned to PHOTON on numerous occasions
since then.."just to make sure it worked properly".)

THIS IS AN ADDICTIVE PROGRAM! The startup screen
allows you to choose one or two players and also =>

a starting level of play (levels 1-15). At first I
thought there were only 15 levels. But when I did
finally manage to beat level 15, I found there were
more levels. I have been all the way to level 31. I
still don't know how many levels there are. (One
critique here is that whenever you "die" at one of
the higher levels, you will have to return to the
startup screen and work your way back up to the
higher levels again.)

Without giving you the printed description from the
documentation, let me explain in my own words what
this game is about. Each screen is different. You,
a small gray tanklike object must try to maneuver
the screen to the one exit on the screen. But to
reach that door you must move obstacles, dodge =>

colorful fast-moving balls, and avoid (that should
be AVOID) purple globs that try to eat you. On some
screens you may also experience time bombs.

To move an obstacle you use your joystick to "push"
or "pull" the object. Variously curved objects which
make the colorful balls change direction, can also
be "pushed" and "pulled" so you can control the
movement of the balls. The only defense you have
against the purple globs is to contain them with the
objects you can move and also by keeping them at bay
by keeping the colorful balls between you and them.
(The colorful balls can do damage to the purple
globs.) All the while some very nice sound effects
and music are present. If you only purchase one of
the SUNDOG packages, make sure PHOTON is the one! =*

CALLIGRAPHER
RAY SMITH

CALLIGRAPHER:
Way back in 1985 I think it was, I bought a tape
version of this program and an OS9 version around a
couple of years later.
In 1991 I bought from Sugar Software again loads of
further fonts and also some CLIPIX, which were small
clipart items which could be slotted into
Calligrapher files. I also asked for the up-to-date
version of Calligrapher which would allow me to use
the CLIPIX.
Gary Davis of Sugar Software said that version 2 of
the program was not quite ready, but he'd send it in
due course. Well, I waited and waited, but no
program was forthcoming and subsequent letters were
returned 'no longer at this address'.
Has anyone got an up-to-date version of this ===>

program 'Calligrapher' either for RSDOS or OS9,
which allows you to use these CLIPIX files, I've got
three disks (perhaps more) of these files which I've
never yet been able to use, and the fonts disks I
purchased I've only used with OS9 Level 1 - which of
course uses the PMODE4 screen and I'd dearly love to
use the program with the HSCREEN facilities. After
all the fonts and the Clipix cost me over $100.00!!

CFDM Art
Keiran Kenny

I was glad to see some black-and-white cartoons
in CFDM. I think black and white is, in some ways,
the best medium for cartoons.
I am glad to note that you have settled on Stuart
Wyss-Gallifent's NIBSHOW for showing NIB pictures.
Your GALLERY was great and, with all due modesty, my
NIBLODR+ was also not too bad. But I like being able
to choose between a continuing show or individual
pictures.
Unfortunately, the number of pictures one can get
on a disk is limited and the shows are short. I won-
der if it would be possible to transfer a large num-
ber of files to tape and let 'er roll! Any sugges-
tions?

RICK: Yes Keiran, we have indeed settled on Stuart's
NIBSHOW! But...I was planning to use your NIBLODR+
in this issue since we've dedicated this issue to
our out-of-country Friends. Then...I found NIBLODR+
would not load the 10 granule NIB picture FIRSTSNO.
This may be the answer to the problem you have been
experiencing with large NIB pictures. I haven't had
time to check it out and being in a little bit of a
hurry, I decided to use my old GALLERY viewer for
this issue. (Stuart's NIBSHOW will be back next
month.)

MULTIPACK UPGRADE
MARIO LECOURS

I have a question that bothers me since I bought
a used MULTIPACK (26-3124). I have the supposed
upgrade for using on my CoCo 3. I have never
connected it to my CoCo 3.

  I'd like to know...

    1. Is it harmful for any of my hardware not
       upgrading my MULTIPACK?

    2. If yes, will I be able to use it on my CoCo 2
       if I upgrade my MULTIPACK?

Please someone help me. I'd really wish to branch
my Speech/Sound Pak to it but I don't wish to ruin
my CoCo 3 or the MULTIPACK itself. Thanks. =*

-----
RICK: Loyal this question has been asked a number of
times; so I'll try to give an answer here. HFE is
used to create new fonts for use on the HSCREENs.
Whenever you use or write a program which uses text
on a HSCREEN you are seeing the built-in font. If
you have HFE, you can LOADM a font your have created
or one of HFE's fonts for a brand new look! =*
