"ABOUT CFDM" COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with that format exclusively. A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong. By providing a unique means of communication, maybe old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our knowledge and experiences! The success of this effort depends on each one who becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/ her two cents in the form of articles, programs, opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the manual with your starter kit for details on how to submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =* |
ABOUT COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is the creation and property of Rick Cooper. It is distributed solely by RICK'S COMPUTER ENTERPRISE. The material which makes up each issue remains the property of the author(s) or contributor(s) unless an agreement has been made otherwise. COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated exclusively to those who enjoy the COCO3 operating under RS DOS. It is hoped that this publication will encourage the continued usage of our favorite computer. Neither CFDM nor RICK'S COMPUTER ENTERPRISE will be responsible for the submission or publication of any material that does not belong to the submitter. WE DO NOT ADVOCATE OR SUPPORT PIRACY! =* |

Experiment Friends,
I thought I'd do an experimental design
for you on the CFDM cover. I was playing
with the painting colors and came up with a
design and I could come up with more if you
like these kind of designs. I enjoy working
with this type of Art Work as well. Let me
know what you think!

DISK BOUNTY WHAT'S UNUSAL CONTEST EXTENDED! WHERE IN THE WORLD IS COCO CAT? |
| Back to top |
SUBMISSION DISK BOUNTY Here's a little incentive for you to help me build
up a store of material for CFDM.
For each subscriber who sends a submission disk to
me during the months of July and August, I will put
a free flippie in your mailer when I send your next
issue of CFDM. Your submission disk must be received
during those two months.
Plan now to be ACTIVE COCO! I'd really like to have
your Family Tree (if you haven't already sent one),
a Review of a CoCo product you like, a Forum entry,
a Program you've written, an Article, a Graphic, or
anything else you'd care to submit.
PLEASE PARTICIPATE! =*

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS COCO CAT? Since RAINBOW has closed shop, the CoCo cat has no
place to call home! In fact, he has run away! He was
last seen wandering around confused and scared!!!
Join the hunt! Follow his tracks, gather the clues,
and discover where he is hiding. (Yes, it's a game!)
There are four cat tracks programs: ("CATTRAX1-4").
The first is on this disk. The other 3 will appear
in subsequent issues. Each program asks a question
about the CoCo cat. Answer correctly and you will
find clues that will enable you to locate the cat.
Answer all 4 questions, gather the clues, and find
CoCo cat's location. Then send a post card to CFDM
(CTRL2)===========>

with the four answers and the final solution. The
winner will receive an original one-of-a-kind CoCo
cat statue that I am sculpting especially for this
contest. The CoCo cat is standing proudly on top of
a wooden base which will have a brass plate with the
winner's name engraved on it. The cat stands about 6
inches tall. The CoCo cat is sculpted in color. It
will look really impressive standing next to some-
one's CoCo! Someone, PLEASE give this kitty a home!
The rules are:
1- All entrants must be subscribers to CFDM. Sub-
scribers may enter as many times as they wish.
2- The contest will end 21 days after the disk with
the 4th "CATTRAX" program has been mailed out.
(CTRL-3)===============>
____________________________________________________
3- Entries must be submitted on a post card and con-
tain the answers to the 4 questions, the final solu-
tion and the sender's name, address, and tel. no.
4- In the event that there is more than one person
who has submitted all the correct answers, a grand
prize winner will be drawn at random to receive the
statue. Every one of the winners will receive a very
impressive looking certificate suitable for framing.
5- In the event that no one has all the correct an-
wers, we will extend the deadline until someone is
a winner. (I'm sure we won't have to do that!)
JOIN THE HUNT! RUN "CATTRAX1" TO GET STARTED!
FIND THAT CAT!!!!

PRESENTING..CFDM HARDCOPY!! If you received issue #17 of CFDM, you have been
introduced to the newest product from RICK'S
COMPUTER ENTERPRISE. That's CFDM HARDCOPY, the
paper version of the magazine side of CFDM.
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! This newest
offering was produced by our good Friend, Arthur
Hallock of Deming, New Mexico. Arthur has done a
masterful job of turning the disk version into "a
disk on paper". One thing that is now clear about
CFDM, is just how much information is held on the
side we refer to as the "magazine side"!
All I can say is "way to go Arthur". Thanks for
giving us this new companion to CFDM.
=>

Here's the story on subscribing to CFDM HARDCOPY:
CFDM HARDCOPY will be offered at only one rate. That
is 12 issues for $30. Out of country Friends must

COLOR GUIDE LABELDOC/TEN Wordprocessing Versus Databasing |
| Back to top |
CM3 COLOR GUIDE View text file associated with this article Whenever I've been working with CoCo Max III I
find that I cannot really distinguish between the
various Colors offered in the COLOR Pull-down Chart
-- so I created a PRINTED CHART of the COLORS offer-
ed. I took the liberty of adapting ARTHUR HALLOCK's
PRINTME/BAS Program to PRINT out the ASCII File that
I created. This File also includes the STANDARD RGB
PALETTE, the SLOTS that correspond to the WHITE/GRAY
/BLACK used in PRINTING COLOR Pictures on Black Rib-
bon Printers, and the STANDARD CMP PALETTE. You can
also PRINT this File 'CM3PALET/TXT' with your favor-
ite Word Processor.
I had a Program by Jim Beltramo 'HGCOLOR/BAS'
that gave NAMES to all of the 64 COLORS in both RGB
and CMP format. I've been trying to use this to
assist me in converting the RASCAN colors to RGB, =>
____________________________________________________
but to-date I haven't been too successful. That's
the nice thing about working with the CoCo -- always
something more to do!
When converting COLOR Pictures to be PRINTED in
Black & White, they often look like they are much
TOO DARK to be worthwhile. If you study the CHART
for Printing you will soon see that it all depends
upon which SLOTS were used for the COLORS. A DARK
Color can PRINTOUT as LIGHT GRAY!
The 'TRANSLAT/BAS' Program has its COLORS list-
ed in LINE 100. You may want to study these and see
how they can change your PALETTE of COLORS used. I
will be returning HOME to Springfield, Missouri on
March 1st and will be able to work with my 512K CoCo
III. More importantly I will be back to my Double
Disk Drives -- lots of DISKS IN and OUT here! =>
____________________________________________________
I've been studying the Drawing Techniques of
James Gibbons, Norm Barson and Terry Simons and find
that they use excellent selection of COLORS before
they start to DRAW a Picture. From the NIB Pictures
in RICK'S GALLERY Program I have been able to put
the 'GALDATA/DAT' file into my 'WORD POWER' wordpro-
cessor and LIST out all of the 16 COLORS used. Keep
the Pictures coming -- I enjoy all of them!
I've had MORE FUN these past 12 months with the
arrival of the monthly ISSUE of CFDM!

LABELDOC/TEN Well the time has come ...... This is the last of
the articles in this series. It has been a lot of
fun, but it also took up large chunks of my spare
time. But I really did not mind. All the program
lacks now is a "operators manual". If no one writes
one, I will do so myself within the next two months.
A thanks to John Daniels for spotting the bug in the
return address routine. I had noticed and corrected
this bug earlier, but failed to incorporate it into
the program.
What am I going to do for the next issue ?? Well, I
really dont know yet. I have had some request for
articles on using a laser printer with the Coco III.
But I dont know if there would be enough interest to
warrant the space on the disk. Let me know. !!!

As always, if you want to have a left margin on the

Wordprocessing Versus Databasing View text file associated with this article The file WPVSDB.TXT is ASCII Text that can be read
on RS-DOS Word Processing software.
This file will give instructions - with demonstra-
tions - to create a flexible record structure to
list names, places, etc., on a Word Processor rather
than on Database when label or card printouts are
not needed.
The printer code commands appear on the top left.
These are embedded, non-printable codes. They will
show on the screen but not on text printouts. Do not
change the codes before running the program for the
first time. Suggest you make a hard copy of it
before attempting to edit it.

A Self Portrait
I ran out of fresh ideas for a picture to draw with
CM3, so I tried to copy a picture of myself. The
most recent picture of myself was my passport
photo. I needed more colors, but this is the best I
could do. Maybe other Friends can draw their own
self portraits and send them in.

ERIC and MIKE
If I told you that the picture ERICMIKE was my first picture ever drawn on CoCo Max III (Thanks to Kerian for the CM3 to NIB program!), I'd be lying. It's my second. Wait, my second? But...it's pretty good! I'm no artist. I have an 8x10 enlargement of a photo I took of two boys from my youth group. The photo was taken on the Appalachian Trail as the youth group made its annual one-day hike. Then, I used a ruler and copied the photo into Coco Max 3. I am pleased with the result. I think the clothing on Mike looks great, the faces, well...for the second picture ever! P.S. Use my NIBSHOW program to view it! =* |
What A Mess
My NIBSHOW program can handle animated CocoMax III files. The way NIBSHOW knows that the files requires animating is the *3 as the first two characters. The * makes NIBSHOW run the animate routine. The 3 (it could be between 0 and 9) is a delay for the cycle. *3MESS.NIB is therefore a short NIB file to be viewed with NIBSHOW. The *3 is VITAL to the correct animation of NIBSHOW. If you rename the file, make sure the first two characters are still *3. Just select *3MESS.NIB from the menu. You can view this screen with GALLERY or NIBLOADR but it won't "move". -* |

FAMILY TREE My name is George Jurecka, and I live with my wife (Nancy) and two children (Jason and Ginger) in the small Texas town of Weimar (Population 2052). I work for the United States Postal Service as a Rural Letter Carrier on a route that is over 118 miles long and serves nearly 450 boxes. Nancy teaches at the local high school. The CoCo 2 was my first computer, and it is still in use since I have collected much software for it. It is a 64K and has a multipak, disk drive, cassette, and TV monitor as its configuration. The CoCo 3 I have is a 128K with disk drive, Star NX-1001 printer and a Magnavox RGB monitor. <CTRL + 2 or 3> => ____________________________________________________ My collection of magazines, books, and programs covers the full spectrum of Color Computer operation and use. The information covers machine language, OS9 (Level 1 & 2), desktop publishing, word process- ing, peeks, pokes and other stuff. As a self-taught BASIC programmer, I enjoy writing orignal programs as well as modifying programs from CoCo magazines or BASIC computer programming books. Most enjoyable, are programs that educate or perform some task such as printing a banner, drawing a pic- ture, keeping track of something, or making music. I'm not much on games, except for "Shanghai" (to which I'm addicted). <CTRL + 1 or 3> => ____________________________________________________ My aspirations to become proficient at machine language and OS9 programming have met with little success. However, at age 45, I feel my learning will most likely be limited to the lifetime of the two CoCos. Long live the CoCos! I purchased a COCO 3, 502 disk drive, 107

cartridges, I purchased two programs: Scripsit
and Sspectaculator. The reason for a COCO was
to help with Kevin's tree spraying business.
I have NO programing knowledge!!
I subscribed to The Rainbow and ordered three
disks for the games. In February, I finally
saw Rick's ad and sent $6.00 for one issue of
CFDM. I was gambling that I would find help me

FAMILY TREE Hello from South Central Pennsylvania! My name
is Ronald, but since we are all friends please call
me Ron. I've only received CFDM two months and I'm
already hooked and sent Rick $30 for 6 more issues.
This is a great magazine!
I've lived all of my 41 years right here in PA.
My wife and I have a teenage daughter and also a
teenage son. I worked 18 years in a manufacturing co
wiring electric control panels and now for the last
5 years I'm a vending mechanic. That means when the
jukebox doesn't work or it takes your money, I'm the
one who fixes it.
I got my COCO 3 and FD-502 disk drive with an
Industrial Electronics Course I completed in 1989.
I'm not much of a programer, but enjoy using many
programs I've gotten from Rainbow for several =>

years. But since Rainbow is falling by the way, I'm
glad for Rick's CFDM. I've already received much
from my couple of CFDM's. One friend is selling me a
printer and I have ordered some software from
others. Thanks for the ads!
I'm active in my Church and help lead a boys
club on Wed. evenings. I also help with my son's
baseball team when it starts. So it is usually after
dark when I get to sit down to my COCO.

PUBLIC DOMAIN LIBRARY I'm looking forward to the creation of a PUBLIC
DOMAIN LIBRARY included in the 'ADVERTISEMENTS' por-
tion of CFDM as suggested in ISSUE #16 by SCOTT A.
BALDRIDGE. I will review my many Disks and send
programs that hopefully will be of interest to our
FRIENDS. I've enjoyed the many Disks that I have
purchased from the MI&CC Library in Des Moines, Iowa
and I'm sure that there are many programs that each
of us have in our Personal Libraries that would be
enjoyed by everyone.
SCOTT's offer is MOST GENEROUS -- I hope he has
the time, space and equipment available to prepare
the Disk requests that I am sure he will receive!?
I'm sure that he has thought about the organi-
zation of the Library as to the CoCo2 and 3, along
with OS-9. Documentation could be in Disk Files -->
____________________________________________________
that could be printed out by the purchaser -- save
on special copying and mailing. Just a syggestion.
On the SECOND PART OF THE PLAN:
DELPHI-ON DISK
I like it as I've never been successful in download-
ing a Program or Graphic! I hope that SCOTT will be
able to generate enough money from the LIBRARY to
cover his additional costs - if not, I would suggest
that he set a DOWNLOAD CHARGE for those that want a
particular item from DELPHI.
To make this SUCCESSFUL we all need to start
sending PUBLIC DOMAIN PROGRAMS to SCOTT -- be sure
that they are 100% pure!

Submissions I don't know if it is appropriate to suggest this.
Rick probably agrees. I get the impression that
CFDM is overwhelmed with original programs, artwork,
music and other stuff. Every disk has been full,
and the three bonus disks (3 FULL double sided disks
in just over one year!) indicate a quantity of
programs.
Naturally, not everyone makes it right away, due
to space. I think that space is an issue that we
can help Rick with. A granule on the disk takes up
about 2k. If your submission is 1 byte longer than
that, Diskbasic takes up another whole granule for
that extra byte! That is an extra 2k!!
WHAT CAN YOU DO ??? see next screen CTRL-2=>
____________________________________________________
Okay! You're still reading!
Every BASIC program can be made more space effecient
by removing all unnessecary spaces in program lines!
It doesn't sound like much, but my NIBSHOW program
went from 3 grans to 2 grans. If everyone could
cut a granule off their long programs, Rick would
have at least 6-10 extra granules for YOUR programs!
Lines like this:
100 IF H>5 THEN 200 ELSE IF H<4 THEN POKE 456,78:GOT
O 200
...could be shortened to...
100 IFH>5THEN200ELSEIFH<4THENPOKE456,78:GOTO200
I know it looks cramped, but it saves SO MUCH space!
more <CTRL-3> =>
____________________________________________________
I edit one line at a time, using the S command to
Search for spaces, then D to delete. It goes
pretty quick, and I was happy to see NIBSHOW go to
2 grans. I hope it has a better chance of making
it!!!! (Rick?)
------
RICK: Excellent suggestion Stuart! Thanks for your
idea on how CFDM can become bigger by becoming
smaller!

FROM THE EDITOR Wow! Another issue almost finished. What a month
this has been! One notable event was the first
visit to CFDM headquarters by a Friend from out-of-
state. I won't tell his name here, but you can see
an entry written by him in this section. Check it
out!
Another reason this has been a great month is that
a number of new Friends have enrolled and quite a
number of old Friends have returned after being
absent for some time.
Also, the first subscribers to CFDM HARDCOPY have
signed up and I'm really excited about this newest
product! Arthur Hallock has done a fantastic job in
making this a great looking companion for CFDM! =>
____________________________________________________
If you haven't signed up, I sincerely hope you plan
to! There's a number of reasons. One is that it
will be an incentive for you to resubscribe to CFDM
when your current subscription runs out! One other
apparent reason is that advertisers in the CoCo
community will probably prefer to advertise in the
traditional paper-type magazine and this will help
them and us. Please consider subscribing if you
have not already!
Next topic. Every once in a while I've reminded you
that we are in need of certain entries. You've never
let me down yet! At this time we need Family Trees,
Reviews, Forums, and Articles. If you've never made
a submission, it's really not that hard and you'll
really enjoy seeing your entry in CFDM! =>

Here's hoping that this issue finds you well and
still excited about CFDM and CoCo!!

RESTORE.BAS (ANOTHER HEAVY DISK) For those who do not have CFDM issue #11, you are
most likely unfamiliar with our "heavy disks". Due
do the large number of files we had scheduled for
that disk, we ran out of disk space. So ... with a
little coaxing I managed to hide the extra files on
the program side. By running the RESTORE.BAS program
on issue #11, the other files were uncovered. This
process required making two copies of the program
side of the disk. Please read on.
On the issue #11 disk there were a total of 88
granules of programs. On this disk, #18, there are
81 granules of programs. Follow the instructions
below exactly to uncover the hidden files.
=>
____________________________________________________
INSTRUCTIONS FOR UNCOVERING THE HIDDEN FILES:
1. Make one backup of the MAGAZINE SIDE (SIDE 1)
and label it - CFDM ISSUE #18, MAGAZINE.
2. Make TWO backups of the PROGRAM SIDE...
Label one - PROGRAM DISK #1
Label the second one - PROGRAM DISK #2
3. PUT YOUR MASTER CFDM DISK IN A SAFE PLACE!!
4. KILL the program "RESTORE.BAS" on (and ONLY on)
PROGRAM DISK #1.
5. RUN "RESTORE.BAS" on PROGRAM DISK #2.
This program ("RESTORE.BAS") will erase the
DIRECTORY, move in a new DIRECTORY, and move the
hidden programs into their correct locations on
the disk.
THE RESTORE PROCESS TAKES AWHILE. BE PATIENT! =>
____________________________________________________
After the above process, you will have two disks of
programs. All came on the PROGRAM SIDE of the CFDM
disk. You will notice that PROGRAM DISK #1 has 11
granules free (before KILLing "RESTORE.BAS"). You
will also notice that PROGRAM DISK #2 has 44 free
granules. That's a total of 81 (68-11 + 68-44)
granules of programs that were stored on this disk!

COLORWARE
QUESTION 1: do you know if COLORWARE, publishers of
CoCo Max 3 are still in business?
I sent them a program, MINILOD+, as a possible
alternative to their MINILOAD program. The package
was returned by US Post with the notation that there
was no mail receptacle for COLORWARE at the address.
MINILOD+ works much the same as NIBLODR+ that I
sent you some time ago. If Dave Stampe reads this, I
would be glad to send him a copy.
QUESTION 2: Could you please send another 25 flippy
disks? I really appreciate the convenience of having
clean, factory-punched flippies.
QUESTION 3: Recently I did a CM3 picture that, when
saved, took 12 granules on the disk. I converted it
to a NIB picture but all I got was garbage when I
tried to view it. =>
____________________________________________________
I cleared 12 graphic pages and deleted the
PCLEAR8s from NIBSAVER and NIBLOADR. I then got the
top half of the picture loaded but the bottom half
was garbage. Clearing more than 12 graphic pages
got me an OM ERROR when I ran NIBSAVER.
I have put the picture, WATRFALS/CM3 on the disk
for you to see.
Wherever possible, I like to save pictures as NIB
files because they take less disk space than CM3
files.
Any suggestions?
----------------------------------------------------
RICK: Keiran, NIB will compress most pictures, but
those that require more than 9 granules will crash
the SAVE routine in NIB. The fault is my own but you
will almost never run into that type of pix. =>
____________________________________________________
I did have a go at your WATERFAL.CM3 picture and it
did NIB (See the GALLERY on the PROGRAM SIDE). The
only answer I have for why it didn't NIB for you is
that there is a possiblity that some memory had been
changed by a previous program. This could have made
a conflict for the NIBSAVER program. It's always a
good idea to do a cold-start when changing programs!
By the way, the picture is GREAT! THANKS!

HURRAH FOR HARDCOPY !! ! RICK -- you've done it AGAIN! I don't know how
much 'AID' ARTHUR S. HALLOCK from Deming, New Mexico
gave to you in preparing CFDM in HARDCOPY, but you
BOTH are to be CONGRATULATED!!
I'm enclosing my $30 to receive the next 12
Issues of CFDM HARDCOPY -- it will save me the time
to copy including ribbons and paper! The Format and
Layout are SUPERB!! The inclusion of GRAPHICS and
various TYPE SETS make it come to life.
In ISSUE #17 I made a GROSS ERROR in switching
the HOME STATES of ARTHUR S. HALLOCK and LARRY K.
LARAWAY -- SORRY!! ART is in DEMING, NEW MEXICO and
LARRY is in BREMERTON, WASHINGTON. BOTH have been
very helpful to me in my GRAPHICS conversions from
one format to another.
THANKS for bringing so much FUN to my HOUSE! =>

RICK: Thanks Godfrey..but..about 99% of the credit
goes to Arthur! All I did (along with Donna) was to
spend about 9 hours duplicating the issue! Now that
I think about it, maybe Arthur only did 98% of the
work!

In Appreciation Dear Rick,
Just thought I'd put a few lines in to let you
know how much I appreciate CFDM and the time and
effort that you and your family are giving to keep
the interest alive in the CoCo community.
I also want the rest of the CFDM family (it
sure feels like a family to me) to know that I, for
one, really appreciate their continuing support of
CFDM, not only by their submissions (which I REALLY
appreciate), but also by just remaining interested
and staying with us!
I come into personal contact with very few CoCo
enthusiasts and I must say that CFDM has opened new
doors for me. CFDM has given me ideas that otherwise
never would have come to me, and has given me =>
____________________________________________________
much more incentive to improve on my programming, as
well as giving me many new ideas and insights into
what this little CoCo is capable of doing.
I sincerely hope that we, as a group, will be
able to keep other CoCo enthusiasts interested and
in contact. I agree also, that we should do all that
we are able to do to keep the hardware and software
available for those who need it. I extend another
thank you to those who have passed on information to
the rest of us about sources that are still willing
to support the CoCo, and to those who have rescued
some software from oblivion.
Sincerely,
Leslie Waltz

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I would like to thank you Rick for CFDM. The
format of the magazine is very user friendly. Also
I was impressed with your openness in sharing about
the sickness and passing of your Mother. My thoughts

It was also a pleasent surprise to see scripture in
your magazine from you and from others as well.
Truly I now know that I am among friends. Thanks
again! < II Chronicles 7:14 >
PS: Rick, you don't have to share this with CFDM if
you don't want to.

NO THANKS TO 40 TRACK ...I want to thank you for your choice of mailers
that you use for mailing CFDM. Issue #16 arrived at
my home looking like it went through a demolition
derby. There were both tire and foot tracks on the
mailer. When I backed up the disk, I found no
problems with any of the files.
...On CFDM changing from Tandy's standard of a 35
track disk format to a non-standard 40 track disk
format.
After reading your article (RED FLASH) in issue #16
of CFDM, I immediately wrote a 3 page letter voicing
my negative thoughts on the issue. Now that I have
calmed down. I would like to offer the following
suggestions: =>
____________________________________________________
A> Use a file compression program to increase
the space on a 35 track disk.
Or
B> Throw in a bonus disk every 6 months. (I think
you already do this one.)
As it is, my main system will read and write both
sides of a 40 track disk. My backup system though,
will only read and write a single-sided 35 track
disk. And, as far as I know, I am the only person in
my area with a Color Computer 3 disk system.
In the article, you said that it would mean more
work for you (and I assume the rest of your =>

family also.) I feel you have already done a great
job with what you have. It is time now to sit back
and relax.
As the old saying goes - "If it ain't broke, don't
fix it."
----------------------------------------------------
RICK: Thanks J.R., for your great arguments for
staying 35 track. There have been a number of other
Friends who reported they were unable to "pass" the
40 track test. So..this puts the issue to rest for
me, though it would be nice to have just a little
more space!
Per the bonus disk idea, I hope to do something at
least every 3 or 4 issues. =*

SHOWERS OF BLESSING!! Just a few issues ago, we had a request from our
Friend, Logan Bleckley. He sure would like to have
a program called "B-51 Mustang". Well, today I
received a call from Logan and he said, "Thanks to
the many responses I've received. Thanks immensely
and please let it be known that my request has been
answered many times over!"
Now to wish on a CoCo Star: Logan would like to see
a program which would display a bar graph of data
which would be entered prior to making the display.
If twelve inputs of numerical (specifically dollar
amounts) are entered, then a bar graph would be
drawn which would give a visual picture of his
monthly expenditures. If interested, contact Logan
for more details. His address is: =>

become aware. If you want to do something Friendly,
don't hesitate to contact one of the Friends when
the occasion arises. The following excerpts from a
letter from Marie Boudet, reflects our relationship
very well!
Dear Rick,
........I love to receive each disk, and feel you
really have a great product. =>

...I want to thank all the wonderful people that
are sending in programs for you to use on your disk.
Love to make puzzles out of the graphics, that will
fit this process. The explanations on how to do, I
like a lot.
I have made a folder for each issue....I use the
great program (PRT#1CFD.BAS) to save these sections
to disk. I then use RSDOS, an OS-9 program, to
transfer these files to OS-9 and use my editor VED
to adapt them to an 80 width. Then I use VPT (Bob
Van der Poel programs) to print them .....
...all the best...hope you can continue for a long
time... I want to do whatever I can to help keep our
group (family) together as long as possible. =*

WP FORMAT/80 COLUMN Hi Rick,
I think "COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE" looks GREAT.
Now don't get me wrong, but I was wondering if
"CFDM" in the future would ever go to something like
a word processor format and a choice of 80 columns
for the "COCO FRIENDS" who would want this option ?
I got this idea when I was communicating with
another "COCO FRIEND". We use what I call a "disk
letter" (TW-128 WORD PROCESSOR), the program itself
only takes up about 11 granules of space on the
disk itself and leaves plenty of room on the same
side of the disk for text files or art files.
I would like to see your thoughts on this idea.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ! =>
MICHAEL LEWIS,1311 SECOND ST.,MOUNDSVILLE,WV. 26041
____________________________________________________
RICK: Thanks Mike for your thoughts. Your idea was
a popular one when CFDM first started. But...I had
put in a lot of work on the driver and asked for
everyone to just give it a chance for awhile. Now I
very seldom hear any complaints. I hope everyone has
become accustomed to our present setup.
As one Friend recently said, "if it ain't broke,
don't fix it". We really have a good thing here
and I have a little apprehension about tinkering
with it.

I hope I'm not asking for alot, but it would
also be nice if this program could look ahead to see
when certain dates fall on. I'm sure the other "COCO

a program.
Maybe this would be a good project for the

VCR Title Generator CD - Music .BIN Loader HINT FOR ANNYIELD AND BANKRATE NIBSHOW (part 2) NIBSHOW 1.0 NIM.BAS STRINGART REVISITED |
| Back to top |
A VCR Title Generator The Color Computer is an ideal candidate for producing title screens for home videos becasue of it's output capabilities. Unlike more powerful systems, any CoCo can be connected to a VCR via the antenna terminals. The CoCo 3's video output, con- nected to a VCR's video input, makes this connection even easier. A "y" connector can be used to connect a VCR and a TV at the same time, thus enabling one to see the computer output as the title is being recorded. CoCo 3 users with a RGB monitor do not even need the "y" connector. However, the normal CoCo text is too small to be easily read on the TV when the tape is played back. What is needed, is an easy to enter, read and record title generator for the CoCo. <CTRL + 2 or 3> => ____________________________________________________ "VCRTITLE.BAS" could be the answer to the problem. It has nine lines of text that are large enough to be read when the video is viewed on a TV. Its text entry mode allows access to any line at any time. Text can be centered, left or right justified or shifted anywhere on the line. It supports upper and lowercase letters and all of the numbers and other characters (i.e. !"#$%&) on the CoCo. Titles can be saved to disk for multiple use, or use at a more convenient time. The record sequence allows a full screen display or a line-by-line display. Titles can be black characters on a white or green back- ground. A variety of title effects can be produced by starting at different points in the recording sequence. <CTRL + 1 or 3> => ____________________________________________________ "VCRTITLE" will run on any 64K CoCo2 or 128K CoCo3. Modification of line 2000 will be necessary if a RGB monitor is not being used (change RGB to CMP). The program will automatically load "TITLE.ATS"when run. This data will display the author's name and address as well as the copyright date. Any CFDM subscriber may use the program freely; however, any copy of "VCRTITLE.BAS" must be accompainied by a copy of "TITLE.ATS", as the program remains the property of the author. Any questions about the program may be directed to the author at the address contained in the "TITLE.ATS" title. Experimenting with the display produced by "TITLE. ATS" will enable original titles to be produced and recorded with ease. <CTRL + 1 or 2> -=**=- <ESC/BREAK = EXIT> |

prints the names to the screen. If you have tran-
scriptions on your disk that were made by others
than those listed, it would be appropriate to give
them credit by adding their names to those appearing
in the DATA statements. If you use more than 5 names
you must re-dimension NM$ in line 10.
Comments may be changed or added to - lines 520
and 530 contain the comments. If you end up with
more or less than 10 comments, be sure to change the
dimensioning of CM$ in line 10, change line 40 to
read the correct number of statements into the CM$
array, and change line 470 (RND(10)) to the correct
number.
CD.BIN was written exclusively for use with the
music BIN files, but it will also try to load =>

any file that has BIN as its extension. The most
likely result of this attempt is a "crash" and a
lockup of your computer. While a disk will hold more
than 34 music files, CD.BAS will only read the first
34 BIN files that it encounters in the directory.
You may want to modify it for more than 34 files,
but for me, that seemed like enough.
And finally, a request...Herb, Ray, or George..
or anyone else...I'm looking for a number called
"Teddy Bears on Parade". Does anyone have that one?

HINT FOR ANNYIELD AND BANKRATE Two programs, ANNYIELD and BANKRATE, appeared in

start them in WIDTH32.

NIBSHOW (part 2) One last minute addition to NIBSHOW, while keeping
it at 2 granules, is the ability to animate CoCoMax
III files. Once you have drawn and saved your
CM3 file (that uses animation (NOT color cycling))
turn it into a NIB file by using Kierian's
CM3>NIB conversion program (Issue #14). For a
filename, you MUST make the first two characters
an asterisk, and then a number from 0 to 9.
For example:
*4BEACH - the filename is BEACH, and the *4 in
front tells NIBSHOW that the animate speed is 4.
4 is an abitrary number. If it seems to slow or
too fast, rename the file to a higher number
e.g. RENAME"*4BEACH.NIB" TO "*2BEACH.NIB" ->
____________________________________________________
The * tells NIBSHOW to look for a number between 0
and 9 right after the *, and that number becomes the
count for the animate delay. If you have a program
named *DRIVER, you will seriously confuse NIBSHOW
as it will try to interpret the letter D as a number
If you do not want your picture animated, you can
simply rename it to something without an asterisk.
eg. RENAME"*3BEACH.NIB" TO "BEACH.NIB"
Now your BEACH file will load, but won't "move".
Asterisk files can be loaded with GALLERY or
NIBLOADR, but they won't be animated.
->
____________________________________________________
As of right now, NIBSHOW will animate the files, as
in those four palettes (11,12,13, and 14) will
rotate their colors.
CoCoMax III also supports a color-cycling in slot
10, and you can select another 8 colors to cycle
through slot 10. Because the NIB process cuts off
that kind of information, it is currently impossible
for NIBSHOW to do color-cycling as well.
KUDOS to Rick for NIB!! It works more effeciently
than the compression done by CoCoMax III! I wish I
could make CM3 use the NIB format!!!

NIBSHOW 1.0 Every month, when I receive CFDM, I look at all the
NIB files. In order to show them, Rick generally
programs the names into a GALLERY program. So
on each CFDM issue, the GALLERY program is custom
programmed for the pictures on that particular
disk. I wanted to make Rick's life, and my life,
and the lives of everyone out there who puts all the
NIB files on a special disk(s).
NIBSHOW is a viewing program for NIB files. It
requires the NIBLOADR.BIN be on the disk in drive 0.
You can put picture disks in drives 0 (after the
program is up and running) and drive 1 and 2 and 3
(if you have them (or RAM disks)).
NIBSHOW has the following commands (listed on the
screen of NIBSHOW) -CTRL-2 =>
____________________________________________________
C: change drive. Select a drive to access (0-3)
D: get the directory
arrows: move highlight around the directory on the
screen.
Space: load the highlighted file
B: select black or white border
H: switch the default hscreen (2 or 4)
L: switch between 192, 200 or 225 vertical lines
X: exit the program
S: slide show. Asks for a time delay between frames
then loads all files with a NIB extention and
displays them for the time delay.
When viewing the picture (except during Slide show)
you can press B to change the border, L to change
the number of vertical lines, or 1,2,3,4 to view
hscreen 1,2,3 or 4. Break will return to menu. ->
____________________________________________________
NIBSHOW will handle up to 26 NIB files per disk.
Don't ask why 26!
TECHNICAL STUFF:
NIB requires a lot of memory to run, so I need to
use CLEAR 1 statements to free enough memory so that
it doesn't crash. This destroys all variables!
So, all important stuff is POKEd into memory, along
with the filenames from the disk.
NIB uses a lot of the free memory, so I had to find
a safe area to keep the data. I chose the HPRINT
data memory locations. The data to HPRINT on the
screen (something I don't need) takes up about .7k.
This is plenty to store small amounts of data. And
NIB doesn't mess with that area!

NIM.BAS I suppose that this could be an entry into the
EDUCATION PROJECT. It is a thinking game called
NIM. If you don't recognize the title, you
probably know the game anyway. There are counters
on the screen. You and your oponent take turns
taking either 1, 2 or 3 counters. The person who
takes the last one loses. I submit a version of
NIM that I call FISH NIM, because the counters
are food, and the players are represented by fish.
The graphics are pretty neat, so check it out!
FISHNIM.BAS comes with two optional files. One is
called WELCOME.BIN, and the other is CONGRATS.BIT.
These are digitized voice files that say "Welcome
to NIM" and "Congratulations". If you don't have
the files, or don't want to hear it, one of the ->
____________________________________________________
lines at the beginning of FISHNIM.BAS allows you to
switch the voices off. Take a look.
(Yes, it's my voice, digitized with a 6-bit
digitizer (uses joystick port to sample sound)
The included files were NOT recorded with the
highest quality settings, because recording 6-bit
samples takes tons of memory. At the highest
quality settings, a 128k coco can store 3.5 seconds
of sound (40k of storage available on 128k machine)
So enjoy FISHNIM.BAS and my voice!

STRINGART REVISITED If you don't recall what stringart is, just refer
back to the description in Issue # 3. Here are
three more projects translated to the CoCo 3. Just
RUN each program. STRING4 and STRING5 are abstracts
titled "Pierced Planes" and "Starburst", respective-
ly. STRING6 will be easily recognized as it is
developed.
The programming involved is fairly simple, but it
requires a lot of effort keeping track of where you
are and which points are to be connnected. As before
I have shown the points ("nails") which are used to
"string" the designs. I have not used the high-speed
poke so you can better see the stringing sequence.

respectively. The final program, STRING6, appears
in this issue.

Rainbow Adventures #3 When I learned that the Rainbow was going out
of business, I called in to order some back issues
that I needed. When the order clerk told me that
everything was on sale at $2 each, I also ordered
all 4 of the adventure series tapes and disks.
I have only tried one of the disks (#3) and
can only say that I am glad I did not pay the full
price for these products. I tried the first program-
"Escape"- which was probably written for a 5 year
old. It worked up to a point, but certain parts were
incorrect. I discovered typing errors and program-
ing errors in the listing and on the disk itself.
The second program-"The Amulet"-worked pretty well
until you got into the wine cellar where it got
confused about where you were and where you could
go. I found that one of the arrays that control =>
____________________________________________________
the directions available was set up wrong. I fixed
this and finished the adventure. This one turned out
to be pretty good after that. The third program -
"Spymaster" - is set up to run from tape only. I had
to save the program to tape, remove the disk control
ler, and reload from tape. This proved to be a monu-
mental nightmare that only worked 2 out of 10 times.
When it did work, the program had several problems.
The most annoying is that when hidden exits were
found, the program saved the new exit while deleting
the old exits. I have been so frustrated that I have
not tried any more of the adventures yet.
Overall I can say that for $2, it is not too
bad a buy - just be prepared to do a lot of fixing.
If you are not used to the strange ways some people
program, this can be a real struggle. =*

ANIMATION/.NIB Is there a way to save a picture that contains
animation to the .NIB format ? I have noticed
that when I save an animated picture to the .NIB
format, the animation is lost.
I have seen pictures in "CFDM" with animation
in the .NIB format, but I figured that was something
Rick done on his end.

RICK: You were right Mike. Animation is lost when
you save to .NIB format. But...It's not too hard to
write a routine to bring it back if you know which

section of this issue for a demonstration on using
animation with NIB pictures.

Continue to enjoy the CFDM and look forward to it's
arrival each month.
I have a problem this month as the magazine side
will not RUN. I RUN "C" and get a wide green screen
and then the drive stops. I tried loading "CUTILS"
and EXEC but...the same thing. The program side
runs fine. Can you suggest a solution?
RICK: When I changed the LOGO loading routine, I
inadvertently forgot about the ADOS incompatibility.
Change line 1160 to the following:
1160 IF AD=23 THEN EXEC &HD66C ELSE EXEC &HD75F
This should work! =*

Recently, Scott Baldridge wrote to me wanting to
know how to make my FORMS program run with an IBM
compatible printer. Others have also inquired about
my Hscreen2 grey-level screen dump for IBM printers.
Because of this, I spent a few hours modifying those
programs to run on IBM compatible printers.
If you are interested in a copy of IFORMS, the FORMS

Although I do not have an IBM printer, my DMP-133
can switch to IBM mode, so I switched it.
Both programs run well on the DMP-133 in IBM mode.
DIP switches, if any, need to be set to CR=LF also
known as CR=CR+LF.
The printer must do 120 BPI bit image mode (1/2
speed) NOT NORMAL SPEED.
I think, but I don't know, that most IBM printers
can do that.

NEED HELP WITH SUPERCOMM I have bought Rainbow on Disk to get the program "Supercomm". In the docs it says that it should fit on the OS9 stock disk. My problem is that when I try to copy "Supercomm" to my OS9 disk it shows an error 211 (End of file). I have all the hardware to make it work. If anyone could help me on the "Supercomm" search, it would be appreciated a lot. Also, I have a multipak, (no. 26-3124) to sell or to exchange for a printer such as the DMP 105. 222 Lomas Sherbrooke, Quebec J1J 2R3 =* |
P-51, TW-128, and CoCo to IBM In answer to questions in CFDM #16. P51 Mustang Flight Simulator was put out by Tom Mix and was last available from T&D Subscription Software; 2490 Miles Standish Drive; Holland MI 49424. Phone (616) 399-9648, FAX (616) 396-2744. It is on disk #88 along with other games. The cost is $6.00 I have it and think it is a good game and simulator, it is best on a CoCo 3 with a composite monitor but will work on a Coco 2. An RGB monitor doesn't work well since the colors aren't right. Also a deluxe joystick makes it better to use. It is really challenging to dogfight with two computers connected by a cable in the serial ports. The old banner printer When I put in a request for a copy of the Old Banner
Printer last month, I had no idea what kind of
responce it would generate. As of this writing,
06/20/1993, I have had 11 phone calls from people
wanting to know if I received the program yet. Three
cassette tapes with the Old.... on it, and 18 disks
with the program on it.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU and THANK YOU ONCE MORE !!!!!
But please do not send any more. !!! Almost all of
you who wrote, were interested in operating a laser
printer using the Coco 3. It can be done, and I am
doing it on a daily basis. You will need a Serial to
parallel converter to make it work. The problem is
that all the programs I have written so far, =>
____________________________________________________
do not have any documentation written with it. The
way they are set up, and also due to the fact that
the Coco was never designed to operate a laser
printer, makes it rather difficult to use them
without some form of documentation.
So far I have the following programs for the Coco
that use a laser printer.
LLISTER/BAS Llist programs using flist which
makes a purty formatted llisting
DISKJACK/BAS Prints a disk jacket.
ENVELOPE/BAS Prints an envelope, using Simply.
POSTCARD/BAS Prints both sides of a postcard
LASER/BAS LABELPRC/BAS with a laser driver
SIMPLY/LAS SIMPLY BETTER with a laser driver
LTRHEAD/BAS Prints a "shaded box" letter head
using Simply Better. =>

CALENDAR/BAS Prints a desk calendar, including next
and previous months, it allows 31
entries for special days, i.e. Full
Moon, and ALL YOU input is the month
the year, and the entries. It prints
any month from 1900 to 1999.
As soon as I have written the needed documentation
for the programs mentioned I will put them on a disk
together with the docs, and send those of you who
wrote and expressed an interest in these programs, a
copy. If anyone else wants a copy, I would
appreciate a check for $5.00 to cover the cost of
the disk, the mailer and the postage. So all of you
who have asked for them, please be patient, THEY IS
COMMINK. !!!!!! George. *>

To: William Rosenfeld
<ADOS> William,
With the new "C/BAS" program you do not have to
disable ADOS to run the magazine.
But if your particular Ados is set up for 40 tracks
you must use the command BACKUP 0 TO 1,35 since CFDM
is a 35 track disk. Also and more important, ADOS
does not do a regular backup as RS-DOS does. RS-DOS
backs up the entire disk sector by sector.
ADOS does a GAT backup. Which is more like a COPY
then a BACKUP. ADOS looks in the GAT, track 17
sector 2, and COPIES each file to the new disk. The
CFDM disk contains code that is NOT listed in the
GAT. Therefore this code, will NOT be copied when
you back up the disk using ADOS. You have to use the
"ALL" command to backup the disk. =>
____________________________________________________
Thus: BACKUP 0 TO 1,A,35. I think that the programs
will work for you if you use this method.
Also remember NEVER EVER to save anything to a 40
track disk when you are using a 35 track DOS. It
will goof things up royally.
George.
