"ABOUT CFDM"
Rick Cooper

COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who
still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with
that format exclusively.

A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong.
By providing a unique means of communication, maybe
old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our
knowledge and experiences!

The success of this effort depends on each one who
becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/
her two cents in the form of articles, programs,
opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will
all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the
manual with your starter kit for details on how to
submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =*

Silvery Moon
James J. Gibbons

This is another picture that was drawn from
the state of Maine. Maine is a beautiful state,
full of rivers, lakes, mountains, and the sea. I
hope you can get a chance to see Maine in the
future. I saw this picture on our way back from
church one night and couldn't help but paint this
picture for you. As you can see, there's not a
whole lot of color, but what color was there was
good enough for the picture. I hope to do to more
pictures from other states when I find appropiate
pictures. Again, if you have sent me pictures, I
will get to them, but it might be slow as teaching
in school is a full load (at school as well as at
home).

ARTISTIC LETTERHEADS
Jim Bennett

I have created a special letterhead that I use with
my favorite word processor, Max-10. It has a digi-
tized portrait of myself on the left with my name &
address on the right. I have received many compli-
ments for the artistic design of this letterhead.

I have included a NIB file graphic titled "LETRHEAD"
which shows the kind of thing that I'm describing.

If you would like for me to create such a letter-
head for you, just drop me a note describing how you
would like it to appear. If you want a digitized
image, please include a photo. Incidentally, I can
digitize a drawing just as easily as a photo! I can
also include clip art (I have an extensive clip art
--------------CONTINUED ON PAGE 2----------------=>

file) and also just about any font that there is.

All I ask is that you send me a blank, formatted
disk, a mailer, and postage so I can send it back to
you. When I send it back, the disk will have a CLP
file which you can load right into Max-10. I will
also include the CM3 (CoCo-Max 3) files that I used
so that you can edit the image if you want.

Please, don't ask me to do any drawing or customized
art work. Don't ask me to add anything to your
photo or sketch. If you want a special design, just
send me the drawing and I'll digitize it. (I'll be
happy to eliminate the background in a photo).

----------------CONTINUED ON PAGE 3---------------=>
____________________________________________________

I don't want any pay for doing this. All I want is
to help others enjoy using their CoCo's as much as I
enjoy mine.

So, if you're interested in having me do a letter-
head for you, just drop me note and a disk with re-
turn postage.

THE COCOPRO! SOFTWARE !!!
RICK COOPER

As reported earlier, I have purchased a lease of the
software belonging to COCOPRO!. I'll try to give
you the particulars on how you can get a super deal
on these programs. There are a few things I should
tell you from the start. Please keep these in mind
before purchasing these packages.

1) The original prices of these 13 packages totaled
around $400. Last advertised sale prices totaled
nearly $300. This is quality software. ELEVEN OF
THESE PACKAGES ARE OS-9 ORIENTED AND I CANNOT BE
OF ASSISTANCE TO YOU IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT
THEIR USE. PLEASE BE ADVISED OF THIS BEFORE YOU
   ORDER THE OS-9 PACKAGES.

                                               =>
____________________________________________________

2) The documentation to each package will be in the
form of loose leaf sheets, with 4 pages to a
sheet. You may bind these into booklets if you
   wish.

3) This software was quite expensive for me to buy!
I hope you will help me recoup my outlay by
taking advantage of this special offer while
keeping in mind that I ONLY ASK YOU TO BUY WHAT
   YOU WANT AND CAN USE!
----------------------------------------------------
RED FLASH: I'm now able to send the entire COCOPRO!
collection at one time. The entire package consists
of ten flippie diskettes and about 200 loose leaf
sheets of documentation. These sheets can be stapled
to form documentation booklets.          =>
____________________________________________________

I hope many of you will want all of this software.
For those unfamiliar with OS-9, I do not advise
buying the OS-9 packages (YOU MUST HAVE OS-9 LEVEL 2
FOR THESE PACKAGES TO BE USEFUL!) I do STRONGLY
recommend V-TERM and SIMPLY BETTER! SIMPLY BETTER
is simply the best wordprocessor for the CoCo.

        (PLEASE SEE PART 2)

LABELPRC with DMP-105
John Daniels

I recently ran out of pre-printed return
address labels so I decided to try the label pro-
gram submitted by our friend George Quellhorst.
I loaded the program and put a return address on
the disk then tried to load the labels in my DMP-
107. I found out that the tractors would not go
close enough for 1-up labels. No problem, I said,
I will just get out my DMP-105 and use it. The
DMP-105 tractors would go close enough for the
labels but when I tried to print them, the format
did not work properly. After a few evenings of
study I have found out why not. The DMP-105 does
not have a NLQ or Italic font and does not accept
bold and elongation at the same time. On the next
page are the program changes needed to get the
program working with the DMP-105. =>

LABELPRC with DMP-107
John Daniels

When I tried to use my DMP-107 with the label
program submitted by friend George Quellhorst, I
found out that the tractors would not move close
enough to hold the 1-up labels. After examining
the printer, I found a plastic ridge along the back
of the cover opening that prevented the tractors
from moving closer together. I could see no real
reason for this restriction so I removed it and the
printer will now hold the labels. The following is
the procedure for this modification:

1. Unplug the printer.
2. Remove the two plastic pieces from the top.
3. Remove the paper knob.
4. Remove 3 screws at the front and 1 at the back.
                                       =>
____________________________________________________

5. Lift off the cover.
6. Grind off the ridge at the rear of the opening.
7. Smooth the edge of the opening.
8. Replace the cover.
9. Replace the knob and plastic pieces.
10. Print labels!
I used a Dremel tool with a sanding drum to
remove the ridge. The plastic will get hot and melt
a little but be patient and it will work fine.

More Disk Space
Kent Lorentzen

Do you ever need to get a little more on your
disks, well you might be able to. Most disk
drives will read and write more tracks than they
are rated at. You may get 42 or 43 tracks on a 40
track drive, 37 or 38 on a 35 track drive. I have
been using 42 tracks under OS-9 with my Toshiba
drives since I got them, I used 43 tracks with
Tandon single sided drives before getting double
sided drives. So if you have a program to change
the number of tracks on your drives play around with
the numbers and you may find you can get more on
your disks. To know how many tracks you can read
you just have to change the track numbers and try
formating a disk if you don't get head banging at
the end it works, if you do try one less track.

RAMDISK BLUES
DALE KRAMER

I have had trouble using the RAMDISK that came
with my 512K upgrade. Someone mentioned that the
RAMDISK doesn't work if the print spooler is also
used so I set about using only the COLORVENTURE
RAMDISK.
I loaded up a copy of issue #15 in the RAMDISK
and ran the PATCH program. It operates very quickly
in memory but when I ran "C.BAS" the COCO 3 locked
up (as usual) when I pressed either CTRL or ENTER.
CTRL locked it up on the initial screen and if
ENTER was pressed the COCO locked up after the
cover was displayed (little sparkles on the pic).
After making new backups from the master disks
of #15 and the RAMDISKS, I got the same results.
This disk is a backup of #8. I ran the patch on it
                                              =>
____________________________________________________

and then ran "C.BAS". No problem. So then I turned
off the COCO and powered back up. Then I ran the
ramdisk and backed this patched issue to it. Now
I'm writing this article.
It has taken me two hours to get to this point!
I even disconnedted my MPI at one time thinking it
was interfering with the ramdisk. I even ran the
MEMTEST while taking a shower to make sure the COCO
was all right. For something that's supposed to save
wear on drives I could swear my FD-501'S were
wheezing!
I wonder if this has something to do with trying
to use a later issue (with the new HSCREEN menu) as
a submission disk. It's probably just me. If I can
save this I'll try the RAMDISK again. (PAUSE)
                                             =>
____________________________________________________

(sigh) It didn't work! I can't seem to run the
PATCH program on the RAMDISK.
(Another PAUSE) I just tryed to run the PATCH
program on a copy of issue #14 and got the same
lockup I got on the RAMDISK( I just used the drives
this time). Evidently the PATCH program doesn't
work on the latest issues of CFDM.
Can someone else verify this? If I am doing
something wrong with the RAMDISK or the PATCH then
please let me know.

interesting problem.

RAMDISK BLUES PART 2
RICK COOPER

There are many many things that I do not pretend to
understand about our favorite computer. The many
different commands in the BASIC, EXTENDED BASIC,
DISK BASIC, and SUPER EXTENDED BASIC do mystical
things to the system. Sometimes programs make some
changes that affect the next program we run too!

First, PATCH will work with any issue of CFDM. But..
the recommended method for making a submission disk
is to make a backup of the SUBMISSION DISK TEMPLATE
found on the bonus disk which came with issue #8.

Here's why Dale had a problem with PATCH and the
RAMDISK. The DISKI$ command used by PATCH to clear
out specific areas of the disk, requires CLEARing
some memory for the two variable which are =>
____________________________________________________

used to transfer the new data to the disk. The CLEAR
command makes some changes in CoCo's memory which
conflicts with the "C.BAS" program. "C.BAS" first
uses PCLEAR8 which takes away alot of the RAM memory
which is used to hold programs (such as "C.BAS").
The PCLEAR command takes away memory from the bottom
of RAM. Then when PATCH uses CLEAR 1000, this takes
away some memory from the top of RAM. The remainder
of RAM is not big enough for all of "C.BAS" to fit
comfortably.

It would seem simple enough to undo the CLEAR 1000,
to give "C.BAS" the room it needs. Unfortunately,
once you use CLEAR, you can't easily get this memory
back.
                                            =>
____________________________________________________

After a little experimenting, I have found that you
can used three POKES to undo the CLEAR command.
WARNING!!..THIS FIX IS MOST LIKELY NOT COMPLETE!! I
DO NOT GUARANTEE IT!

After installing your RAMDISK, copying an issue of
CFDM to it, and RUNning PATCH.BAS, try these three
pokes:

POKE &H18,&HB:POKE &H21,&H7F:POKE &H22,&H37

I found the "C.BAS" program in the RAMDISK to work
properly. Try it out, if you wish, and see what you
think.

AHUENA HEIAU -- KONA HAWAII
GODFREY J. MOLL

Another of my Hawaiian Pictures. This time it
is of the Restored Hawaiian Temple, Ahuena Heiau,
which fronts the Beach at the King Kamehameha's Kona
Beach Hotel next to the Harbor. The Pier is to the
left, which is where the Large Fish are weighed-in
and the Tourists are loaded-out to go scuba diving,
glass-bottom boat sight-seeing, or to go on a Sunset
Dinner Cruise.
This is all at Kailua-Kona on the western shore
of the Big Island of HAWAII. This is the ancient
playground of Hawaiian Royalty -- predictably sunny
and always lots to do. The area containing the HEIAU
is located in the restored compound called KAMAKAHOU
where King Kamehameha spent his last years. This is
a National Historic Landmark.

MOORING
Keiran Kenny

I wrote a short time back that I just might sub-
mit a picture file when I graduated from the Gibbons
Academy and I would probably be wiser if I kept to
that resolve. However, impatience got the better of
me and I thought MOORING might be good enough to
qualify for inclusion in the Gallery. The original
was drawn using CoCo Max 3.
I had one great difficulty with this picture in
that I just could not get the port and starboard
sides of the ship's bows symmetrical. Everything I
tried failed. Then I got an idea. The diagram in
BUILDBOW will I hope, make it clear.
I drew the port half of the bow, lassoed it and
moved it, flipped it horizontally so that it became
the starboard bow, and moved it back to join the
port half. That worked!                         =>

MOUNTAIN REFLECTION
DOROTHY M. FUNK

Mountain scenes are one of my favorite type of
picture. I wanted to use the Brush Mirror
function of Co Co Max, so I choes a mountain
reflecting in a lake, we have so many in Oregon,
however it does not depict any specific one as I
changed it to my liking. As I like perfection this
was quite a challenge, Fir trees for instance were
quite flustering, but I finely found by going to
Zoom and using the pencil tool I could make them
look more like trees. Shadow was my biggest problen,
I could have used many more shades of the diffrent
colors, but soon learned to work with what I had
available. This picture was done with Co Co Max 3.

The subject was adapted from a mural on our living

that's one wall I haven't had to paint for over 35
years! Don't ask me what kind of tree is shown or if
it even exists. It might just be the product of a
fertile imagination of an artist.

SUN ON THE ROCKS
Norm Barson

The hardest part about this picture was choosing a
title. The sun coming through the trees, is not
only on the rocks, but also on the water and on the
trees. At least that is what I tried to represent. I
did my best to use restraint and make do with only
13 colors. So, this one should make up into a PUZZLE
with no problems.

Hi I am a 35 year old small grain and vegetable
farmer, also a part time logger. I had a couple
years of electronics in a trade school and worked
fixing radios and TVs for a few years but decided
that I like farming better.

Hard Drive, and Citizen 120D printer.
I started with a 4K CoCo in 1980 and upgraded it

had a number of drives and controllers over the
years, they are all still around here some where.

for using RS-Dos. Thanks to Mid Iowa and Country
CoCo and Ricks CFDM for such good stuff.
With Spring, Summer and Fall being busy here on
the farm, most of my spare time for using the
computer is in the winter months. My main computer
interests are practical applications for word
processing, record keeping, file maintenance,
drawing, and printing. I do enjoy a game now and
then just to unwind. I also am interested in the
hardware side and like to do my own upgrades and
make my own cables switchers and the like.

Vic Neufeldt
Victor P. Neufeldt

NAME: Vic Neufeldt (pronounced Newfelt) - some have
trouble with it. Though I'm way out of my league,
I am terribly proud to feel a part in this.
HISTORY: Always an Oregonian. Lived on a farm in
Dallas OR the first 5 yrs, and then to Portland with
new step-dad. After graduation from Benson Tech in
1937, I found work even more slack than today.
Events looked interesting overseas, so I joined the
Navy. Dec 7th found our detachment finishing patrol
and headed for "Pearl" for refueling. Served aboard
the USS Salt Lake City (a heavy cruiser), mostly as
an electrician for about 5 years. Got "Orders" to
go to Richmond Naval Yards to a new ship under con-
struction, and met my wife (to be) at the cafeteria.
We were wed in 1944 and then met only for short
periods until I was allowed to resign in Dec 1945.=>
____________________________________________________

We're still married, raised three wonderful sons,
and have lots of grandkids (5-25 yrs). 38 yrs were
spent with Portland's transit system & I've been re-
tired now almost 10 years. Seems I've had several
hobbies. Once it was electronics -- had a basement
workshop & repaired radios and TVs. When our sons
married and were on their own, we moved to a Town-
house in Beaverton. There we had no basement and my
hobbies became photography and Bonsai'. After 17
years we moved to Grants Pass (wife's sister lived
there). For awhile we enjoyed life there, and it
seemed more equidistant from our 3 sons - one in
Concord CA, one in Bend OR, and the 3rd in Tucson AZ
The swift changes from Cold winter to Hot summers
didn't suit us though, so we moved back to the
Portland area with at least four (4) seasons. =>

A Bright Future For the CoCo
Jim Bennett

As I see it, there are only three possible ways that
the CoCo community can prosper: Tandy could reverse
its decision and start selling CoCo's again, a third
party could obtain the rights to market the CoCo, or
new software could be developed which will expand
the capabilities of the CoCo beyond what they are
today. Since the first two "possibilities" are not
likely to occur, it is my conclusion that our future
lies in the realm of software development. If new,
major software products become available, the CoCo
community will have a bright future.

In terms of the capabilities of the CoCo, there is
much that can be done that has not been done yet. It
seems that the commercial market for CoCo software
dissolved long before the potential of the =>
____________________________________________________

CoCo 3 had been fully explored. I have several
ideas for software that I would like to see become
available. Here are 3 that are at the top of my
"wish list":
1 - A MAX-10 type word processor/desk top pub. sys-
tem which has true letter quality fonts. The
"LETTREX" program by Coless Computer is such a print
driver. A similar print driver could be used with a
point and click, window environment word processor.
2 - Software which works with a fax modem to make
my CoCo function as a fax machine. It's available
with other computer systems. Now it's time for the
CoCo to have such a capability!
3 - Software which operates with a window environ-
ment such as "WINDOW MASTER" by Cer-Comp. Again,
the potential is there; let's see the product! =>
____________________________________________________

These are just three software products that I would
love to have for my CoCo. I'm sure that other CoCo
friends out there have a "wish list" too. Maybe, if
we share these ideas, the programmers will see the
need and accept the challenge. If we keep having
new software being developed which continues to ex-
pand the capabilities of our CoCo's, we will have a
bright future indeed.

COCO COOLER
Victor Neufeldt

I've read so many articles about "Fried Chips" and
this COCO does seem to run warm, so I've been in the
habit of shutting it down for awhile - especially
during the summer. Recently I had a "drain line"
project, and with some 3" ABS pipe left over, I
thought to try to duplicate the action of a "cooler"
that I saw in an old Rainbow magazine. I cut a 16"
section of pipe, notched it to fit over the COCO,
plugged up one end, and added an elbow to the other.
By filing off the corners of an Archer mod # 273-242
cooling fan, I could insert it into the elbow. Then
I just filled in the spaces around the fan, added
weather-stripping tape (inside -- filled gaps and
looked better there). Seems to work well. After
running it awhile, I can slide housing back and COCO
still feels cool. I can worry less. I've read =>

COCO'S FOREVER -- MY PLAN

afford to 'BUY' up the 'SPARE' CoCo's that are being
offered by those that had not been able to get past

lasting enjoyment. I'm also fortunate that my good
Wife and Partner allows me to do it!
In September 1991 I was able to buy a Complete
CoCo3 System from a Family that never SAVE'd on a
Cassette -- never formatted a Disk -- and were sold
OS-9 Level Two by an eager Tandy Salesperson -- only
use was to play GAMES! They were trying to recover
half of what they had invested -- no buyers -- so I
was able to purchase the Hardware and Software for
about 25 cents on the dollar. These buys are in =>

IBM compatibles. I plan to take some of my duplicate
STUFF up to the Middle America CoCo Fest at the end

I have never been a member of the CoCoNut Club,
which is here in Springfield, Missouri -- I may be
missing a good opportunity to Trade and Sell right
in my own backyard!? The cost of shipping equipment

I do hate to pass up a BARGAIN when I see one - just

As to buying up the 'copyright' to Software --
there is just too much available and too many in-
dividual preferences -- note the 18 Word Processors

sion. Same goes for Color Drawing Programs. I have

COVER LOGOS?

WHEN I DESIGNED MY LOGO ENTRY AND EXCHANGED IT FOR
THE ONE ON THE STARTUP SCREEN IT GAVE ME AN IDEA.HOW
ABOUT MAKING THAT SCREEN A FULL-SIZED LOGO SCREEN?
MOST OF US KNOW WHAT OUR BAUD RATE IS ANYWAY. AFTER
THAT SCREEN WOULD COME J. G.'S COVERPAGE.

ALSO, THE "BOWL HS" PROGRAM USES A VERTICAL RE-
SOLUTION OF 255 LINES. THIS WOULD PROBABLY REQUIRE
MOVING THE SECONDARY STACK AROUND LIKE IN THE JUNE
ISSUE OF RAINBOW "EXPANDER" PROGRAM. I WOULD LIKE TO
SEE A GALLERY OF PIX USING THIS SIZE IN A FUTURE

Dear Friends,

Here's issue #17 of CFDM. I think it's one of the
best so far! The Magazine side is almost completely
full. By the time I finish this last entry, there
will be only a few sectors free. (A word of warning
to those who send submissions by copying an issue of
CFDM and then adding their entry to an almost full
disk: DON'T DO IT!!! Rather, you should make a copy
of the SUBMISSION DISK TEMPLATE on the back of the
bonus disk which came with issue #8. This allows you
room for about 16 entries and you can put your
program submissions on the same side of the disk.)

Now a word about the lateness of issue #16 and my
apologies for the tightness you may have felt =>
____________________________________________________

in your chest, neck, and/or hands when you found
your mailbox empty all those many days! On May 13th
I applied for and received a bulk mailing permit. My
stamp for applying the imprint of the bulk mailing
permit was to be available on May 14th. This would
have allowed me to mail on May 15th (the 15th of the
month has been my self-imposed deadline). But.....
the stamp did not come until May 18th and I was able
to mail on the 19th (4 days late). In addition, the
bulk mail is third class, which is not nearly as
fast as first class. So...your issue of CFDM was
most likely very late! I hope you will forgive me
for trying to save about $70 in postage, but to me
and the welfare of CFDM, this is a lot of money!!

3 STARS TO KEIRAN & RICK
GODFREY J. MOLL

CFDM is very fortunate to have many great pro-
grammers! Since I LOVE to work with GRAPHICS, I am
very grateful for the Programming done In ISSUE #14
by KEIRAN KENNY ---> CM3>NIB/BAS certainly makes it
easy for all of us to convert our CoCoMaxIII Color
Pictures to the /NIB format used by RICK in publish-
ing CFDM. And also used to create the NEAT PUZZLES
using RICK's PUZZLE MAKER Program.
     RICK's latest Picture 'CASTLE/NIB' converted
from an IBM compatible format was unique! This will
make it possible for many of us to create Pictures &
Puzzles from material on the various Bulletin Boards
devoted to all computers! Looking forward to more
GREAT GRAPHIC UTILITY Programs in future ISSUES of
OUR SUPERB --> COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE
                                          Godfrey =>
____________________________________________________

RICK: Thanks for the KUDOS Godfrey. I felt I must
comment on my transfer of IBM pics to CoCo. The
process I used is not easy, nor recommended! There
is not a "single" program which does this job. Let
me try to explain.

Using an PC program called VGACAPTURE, I can "catch"
most PC pictures in a byte-for-pixel file. It, also
creates a small file which holds the palette data.
But...the colors available for PC pictures is in the
hundreds..and this makes true transfer impossible
(since CoCo has only 16 palettes and 64 colors).

Next I use a program called COCOUTIL to transfer the
two files to CoCo format. From this point it is a
matter of finding the "best" 16 colors and =>
____________________________________________________

writing programs to "manually" change the PC data
to where it will look acceptable.

I would not dare recommend my procedure to others...
because I can barely do it myself..much less explain
it! I do not doubt that there is a better way to
transfer these pictures, but we must understand that
they will never look as they did in their original
state.

DRAGON PIC
ELAD

Rick, please note in the REVIEW SECTION of this disk
that the 'DRAGON' mentioned is included in NIB on
the backside. The 'IBM' CASTLE you offered in a
previous issue was great. I always thought that art-
work in CFDM had to be original. Please clarify this
for the members.

PS: Are MI&CC and CFDM exchanging articles? I notice
that both groups mention the other and that Terry
has personally called one of our members about an
article written in CFDM about MI&CC.

The reason I ask is that the review on this disk
is on a program from MI&CC and I wondered if MI&CC
was given permission to reprint CFDM articles in the
"UPGRADE".                                  =>
____________________________________________________

RICK: Thanks for the questions Elad, but they do put
me on somewhat of a spot...a very warm spot. When I
put the CASTLE picture in CFDM, I broke or at least
bent one of our basic rules. That is, I had asked
that all submissions be the original work and the
property of the submitter.

The CASTLE picture is not my own creation. I erred
in mindset probably because the owner of the picture
is not known (at least to me). Also, I have spent
quite a bit of time over the last two or three years
trying to do it justice on the CoCo. I hope that all
will forgive me for this error and if the author is
found, I will gladly give credit and apologies!

On to the next question. The UPGRADE and CFDM =>
____________________________________________________

are not exchanging articles although it could be
possible that Terry or I might find something that
might be appropriate for republishing in the future.
I'm assuming that he would agree that that practice
would not normally be of value to our readers since
many of the Friends subscribe to both disks.

Terry and I have a very friendly relationship and I
know if he asked to reprint, I would check with the
original author and hopefully be able to comply. The
fact that we mention each other's product often is
that we both feel this helps keep our community a
little more together. We both realize that CFDM and
the UPGRADE or not enough alike to cause us to
strive with each other for user support!

Flip Side of Disk Vol. 13
William Rosenfeld

Rick,
     I made a back-up copy on a Double-Sided disk
in my dual drive without disabling A-DOS.

Side 0 ran perfectly. Side 1 was almost perfect
except for two files. GALLERY.BAS stopped executing
with a NE ERROR IN 530. Changing earlier line 230 by
adding ":1" to "NIBLOADR" didn't help. LOGIC2.BAS"
froze with RUN command. Is it possible these files
are not compatible with A-DOS ?

This applies to SYSOPS MENU: Can I edit "COPY
FILE TO DRIVE 1" to "DRIVE 2" to make it function on
my Double-Sided Dual Drives ? Notwithstanding, your
CFDM is an admirably creative undertaking. Hats off!
                                            =>
____________________________________________________

RICK: Thanks for sharing your interesting experience
Bill! I can answer the part about changing the copy
command in the SYSOPS but I'll have to yield to our
good Friend George Q. or others about the effects of
ADOS on your copy!

The copy option in the SYSOPS MENU is a routine of
the CUTILS.BIN program you see on the MAGAZINE/SIDE
directory. CUTILS.BIN is the program manager/driver
of CFDM. I have made no changes in this program in
such a long time, I really hesitate to re-enter it.
But...I remember someone asking me the same question
early on. At the time I did find some pokes to allow
the copy to side 2. Alas, I didn't write it down.
Can anyone step forward with those pokes?

Hey, Rick: Congratulations on getting and using a

How many CoCo's do you have for your 3 daughters?
Do you need to immerse yourself in school-work or
CFDM business to get them out of your hair at times?

RICK: Thanks for noticing the labels Ray! My oldest
daughter, Kristin, has a CoCo 3, disk drive, and
CM8 monitor in her room. The two younger ones use
the three CoCo 3s and the PC in the CFDM work area.

Dear Rick, I don't know which I enjoy most -- all
of YOUR work, the music of Herb Schuler, the art of
Jim Gibbons, the comics by Chai, the programs by
Robert A. Turner, Stuart T. Wyss-Gallifent, Keiran
Kenny, Mike Brown, Godfrey Moll, etc, etc, -- could
take a page just to name you all. Through Robert
Grifford, George Quellhorst, You, and many others, I

Tandy. He has a COCO3, that "Newer Tandy", and a
Laptop that he uses while on the road ( engineer for

"Home Teaching" and his wife teaches the kids at
home. The kids love playing school, and I feel she
might just find the COCO lots of help. After they
finish with their present move, I'd like to
subscribe to the CFDM for them -- reintroduce them
to the COCO. Who knows, he was once involved with a
Rainbow Club there, so if he still has contact with
some of them, he may show it to others. His wife has
a degree in Art and an interest with music -- I feel
she might be thrilled with the Artwork and the
Music. They may not get up to our place, but through
your CFDM they can enjoy too, and if time permits,
may contribute.                              =>

Happened to hit the "Clear" key (thought I'd
lost everything), but then I read what was in that
"white space" at top -- instructions for F1, F2, etc
Then I recalled earlier instructions -- GREAT.
Pressed "Break", then went back and tried my hand at
editing another article. At first that F2 gave me
trouble. I pressed it, typed and discovered I'd
erased some -- then discovered that it was a two-
hand operation. I hit the F2 with one hand each
before adding a space or a letter with the other --
I'm not an accomplished typist. It does work good
though, and I like that red asterisk cursor.

HINT CC3FLAGS
ELAD REMARK

EGAD! I like Rick's CC3FLAGS. But I like to speed
things up a little( I am an impatient imperialist).
If, at the end of your turn, you have conquered a
continent (or more), the program serenades you for
each continent you control. The program also beeps
during the attack phase.
To speed things up I negated the trumpets of con-
quest by loading CC3FLAGS and typing the following:

    2860 <ENTER>
    3265 GOSUB 1170

This is most effective when large armies are
attacking and when a player has many continents.

HRIDDLE

The answer to HRIDDLE 2 is the name, Rick Cooper!
The clues were: a quaker who is also called a
"friend" (Rick, of course, is our #1 CoCo friend) -
the quaker is saying "Principally (Rick is a school
principal), I see one who makes barrels (which is a
cooper) or I see Kay!" (R-I-C-K!) There is also a
can of RC cola (Rick's initials), a Liberty magazine
(Rick lives in Liberty, KY), and a bag of Nibbles
potato chips (Rick wrote the NIB compressor). I hope
you liked this HRIDDLE. Now that you get the idea
of how the HRIDDLE works, see if you can solve the
new one. By George, I think it's a good one!
                   ----------
Solutions to this HRIDDLE must be received at CFDM

THE JERSEY BOUNCE
Herb Schuler

Can you believe this is number 12? A whole year of
music for our CFDM Friends. I hope you have gotten
as much enjoyment out of these as I have doing them.
And I invoke Author's privilege in honoring my home
state with its song. Probably not the official State
Song as is 'MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME', just the only one
I know that comes close. 'THE JERSEY BOUNCE' was
written by Bobby Plater, Tiny Bradshaw and Edward
Johnson in 1941. It serves as one of the reminders
of my high school Junior and Senior years spent at
Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tenn.
Other reminders would be 'CHATTANOOGA CHOO-CHOO',
'ILL BE AROUND' and 'A STRING OF PEARLS'. Good music
to have around in your formative years. RUN 'JERSEY'
and reminisce. Don't forget my personal offer in
Issue #16...it still stands, even in the face =>

of my new musical effort. Ever since I played the
clarinet in the high-school band I've wanted to play
the saxophone. Now I'm studying with a local Band
Master to do just that. And, I'm having a great time
with it. Only trouble in waiting so long to do it is
the noticeable lack of wind power necessary for this
instrument. And the use of the facial muscles in
entrapping the embouchure....major pain that doesn't
go away over night anymore. It's in the cards...we
artists must suffer!

So, my music SERIES for CFDM is now history. But,
you haven't heard the last of me! You know, before
'THE RAINBOW' announced its demise I was considering
marketing my musical efforts. Now you can get some
of them free with my offer in Issue #16. And some =>

or all of the others will be forthcoming in one form
or another in future issues, although not with the
same regularity.

I still had not found 'CHARIOTS OF FIRE' when a CFDM
Friend wrote saying he could submit his version of
the song if I was not going to. I urged him to go
ahead with it and I understand it is in the hands of
the Editor. We should see (hear) it before too long.

To Betty McCormick of Las Vegas: I received your
kind note from Rick and express my appreciation for
your generous offer. I may need your resources for
fulfilling the personal offer in Issue #16. Speaking
of which; my address:809 Locksley Lane, Woodbury, NJ

WORD1 TO 15
Colin North

A series of 15 WORD education programmes that were
inspired by Charles Gibson's article on LPOKE.

All information comes from the Readers Digest and
the month and year are recorded at the start of the
DATA statements.

You can insert your own data in lines 1000- and if
you delete -990 and then save the DATA in ASCII
format, you can put it into a word processor and
this makes the job of changing the DATA very easy.

You can then MERGE the DATA back into the original
programme and save as a new file.

ANNYIELD.BAS will record reinvested dividends of an
*individual* security or mutual fund stock and will
compute annualized yields.
LIST after loading file and read lines 110-119 for
repetition of these instructions. One file per fund.
This will require editing Title Names for each fund.
It offers options to either view results on your
screen or on your printer. Before loading,Poke in yo
ur printer baud rate or edit it in an initital line.
Start off by inputting the data asked by the prompts
of Menu items 3, 4 and 5. Then Save the data thru
Menu 2. When next used, Menu 1 will load the saved
data which will be the basis for future calculation.
Menu 1 will not load unless previous data has been
previously saved. Menu 5 will not display unless
Menu 1 was loaded,or Menu 3 & 4 just entered  =>
____________________________________________________

A WORD OF CAUTION - When you create multiple
files for separate stocks or funds, remember to SAVE
each file as you edit the title names. That will
then give you separate files to input its respective
data, such as purchase price, dividend share amounts,
dividend value at time of issue, current market
value, etc.

Program will then automatically give you a report
of the total dividends and the yield for that par
ticular stock or fund.

Since the yield is computed on an annual basis,it
is necessary to enter the value of dividends of
previous tax years to only consider current year
dividends.                                   =>
____________________________________________________

The object is to invest in high paying yields
of stocks or funds whose share market prices will
increase and not decrease. This will only work with
investments in solid companies or funds that are not
"get rich quick " speculative deals.

B1-C BOMBER
Stuart Wyss-Gallifent

The year is 1993 in the politically correct text/
real time game in which President Bush orders you
to strike targets in Iraq. You fly a new B1-C
bomber...

About the game:
There are NO graphics. It is strictly text-based.
However, it uses the TIMER function so that missiles
get closer and you fly around even if you aren't
entering commands. (Hence, the real-time idea).
Your mission is to hit a primary target in Iraq or
Iran, but you can destroy other things on the way.
You have missiles, and a bomb to do the dirty work.
Fly back to the USS Kitty Hawk when done your
mission.
            Commands: see page 2 (ctrl-2)      =>
____________________________________________________

A=autopilot-gets you places faster, press A to
  deactivate if switched on.
B=bomb-enter the target to hit. You need the fail-
safe code from the opening screen of the game.
C=change course-enter the new heading
E=ecm-electronic counter measure to try and make the
enemy missiles lose their target locks.
I=inventory-status of your plane
L=locate-enter place names to discover their heading
  and range.
P=phoenix missile-enter target to shoot a missile at
Your plane can only track 2 phoenix missiles at a
  time.
S=search-computer tells of targets within 40 km
V=evasive action-you are tossed around and put off
course, and all enemy missiles lose their locks.->
____________________________________________________

That's it. The commands are printed on screen
during the game. You have three text windows where
different info will show up. A tactical window, a
communications window, and an input window.

One last thing, when told to input a target, you
can, if you want, type in just enough letters to
correctly match the target name. IE. when trying
to locate BAGHDAD, you can type in BAG. If you type
BA, the computer will locate BAKOL,BAGHDAD and BASRA
. This is vital during Phoenix missile firing, and
dropping your bomb. If you don't type in enough
letters to match just the one target you want to
hit, the computer will not fire the missile.EG. you
want to hit BAGHDAD, you type in BA, the computer
says:BAKOL is not in range. -enjoy! =*

This program gives you a choice of two options

Either, a printout of instructions to use a
hand calculator with an exponential function to find
equal loan payments inclusive of interest -

Or, a computer run version of the same plus a
a menu choice of determining earned Comp'nd Interest

CHURCH IN THE MOONLIGHT
DOROTHY M. FUNK

I have always been very interested in all types
of Arts & Crafts and did very well with most any I
tried. While we were living in Japan I had the
opportunity to attend an Art class taught by a
Japanese artist who taught Oil Painting, I realy
enjoyed this.
I got my first computer, a Co Co 2, to help pass
the time while recuperating from back surgary.
My first drawing was done with basic, I call it
"Church In The Moonlight". It was a lot of fun, but
took a lot of time. I then got Desk Mate and drew
several pictures with the paint program, but the
resolution was so poor, if you used more than two
colors, that I ended up doing every thing in black
& white.
                                                 =>

I now have a Co Co 3, with Color Max, and Co Co

have done with these programs in the near future.

Dorothy's program "CHURCH.BAS" is located on the
bonus disk.

DISKCOPY
Kent Lorentzen

Do you ever have a disk with a few bad sectors on
it that you need to backup? It has happened to me
so I wrote DISKCOPY to make a sector by sector copy
from one disk to another. This program will copy
all the readable sectors from a bad disk to another
disk.
The program requires 2 drives. DSKINI a disk
before running the program, then answer the prompts.
If you have your drives set to 40 tracks edit
line 200, changing 35 to 40.

/MUS File Player:"PLAY-MUS.ADD"
[[[[[ Robert Allen Turner ]]]]]

After receiving several disks of Public Domain /MUS
files (Thanks J.M.!), I was dismayed that I had no
way to listen to them. I came across a public domain
program that would add a Mono Player to the files
("ADDPLAY.BAS"), but I still was not satisfied. The
MUSICA system was designed to play these files in
true Stereo, via the Speech Systems Stereo Pack. I
do not own this pack and do not know if it's still
available. I do, however, own an Orchestra 90-CC
stereo music pak. Therefore, I set out to design a
player that would play /MUS files via the ORCH 90-CC
pak. The result is "PLAY-MUS", which not only allows
the files to be played in stereo via the ORCH 90-CC,
but also via the Speech Systems pack, as well as in
Mono, via the TV/Monitor speaker. The program is on
the flip side of this disk as: "PLAY-MUS.ADD". =>
____________________________________________________

To use the program, simply LOADM"PLAY-MUS.ADD":EXEC
and press [ENTER]. Then, insert a diskette contain-
ing /MUS files and follow the prompts. The /MUS
files will have the PLAY-MUS player added to them &
they will be converted to stand alone /BIN files.
They may then be LOADMed and EXECed.
It should be noted that there must be 1 free gran
on the disk for each /MUS file on the disk, in order
for the "PLAY-MUS.ADD" to function. That is, if you
have 15 /MUS files on the disk, there should be at
least 15 FREE granules. This is because some of the
files will be increased in length by 1 granule, due
to the addition of the player routine.
I have included the assembly listing (DISK EDTASM
format) for those wishing to examine it. It is on
the disk as "PLAY-MUS.ASM". I will not try to =>
____________________________________________________

explain it's operation here. It is provided for your
information. Now, the "PLAY-MUS.ADD" warrants some
discussion, due to the way it is saved. It is a
BASIC program, with the PLAY-MUS /BIN file appended
to it. I then saved the BASIC program as a /BIN pro-
gram, so it could be LOADM:EXECed. I did it this way
because if you save the BASIC program in the ASCII
format, the M/L will be dropped, and the program
will be useless. You can still save "PLAY-MUS.ADD"
as a BASIC program by: LOADM"PLAY-MUS.ADD":EXEC and
press [ENTER]. Then press [BREAK] and type: SAVE
"PLAY-MUS.BAS" [ENTER]. The program will function
the same, unless you save it in the ASCII format. It
includes a test, which will warn that it has been
saved in ASCII format & that it is now useless.

"PLAY-MUS.ADD" [P A R T 2 .]
]]]]] Robert Allen Turner [[[[[

I had hoped that I could squeeze all of the info on
PLAY-MUS.ADD into one entry, but, alas, I could not.
I wrote the program with the intention of giving it
as shareware to the public, so feel free to give a
copy to all your CoCoFriends, upload it to BBS', or
whatever! Just leave it unchanged.
If anyone has any /MUS files other than those in
the T & D collection of public domain, I would like
to hear from you. Also, does anyone know where any
Speech Systems products might still be obtained? I
am specifically interested in MUSICA and the EARS
voice recognition system. Any assistance will be
greatly appreciated.
Now, back to PLAY-MUS.ADD; Once you have executed
the program on a disk of /MUS files, they are con-
verted to /BIN files. You may then LOADM them and =>
____________________________________________________

EXEC them. You will then be presented with the title
screen of the PLAY-MUS.BIN player routine, as well
as a menu with the options: E, M, S, O. Pressing E
will return to BASIC, M will play the file in mono
through the TV/Monitor speaker, S will play the file
in stereo through the Speech Systems stereo pack and
O will play the file in stereo through the Orchestra
90-CC stereo pak. If you choose one of the stereo
options, you must have the proper stereo pack in one
of the slots of a Multi-Pak (or replacement bus ex-
pander such as SLOTPAK III, XPORT or CC-BUS). The
disk drive controller should, out of convention, be
plugged into slot 4 (or the equivalent of slot 4 if
you are using some other bus expander). The stereo
pak can be in any slot. The /MUS files sound good in
mono, but they are GREAT in stereo! If your stereo=>
____________________________________________________

pack supports it, the sound is also channelled from
the cartridge port to the TV/Monitor speaker. This
is done by pointing the CoCo's sound multiplexer
(MUX) to the cartridge port. The Orchestra 90 pack
mixes the left & right channels, and then feeds the
mixed signal back to the cartridge port. I don't
know if the Speech Systems pack does this. Anyway,
even though this signal is mono, when fed to the
cartridge port, it sounds better than the mono
option, since the CoCo's built in sound hardware
can't accurately reproduce the BASS notes. It will
sound even better if played through a good stereo
system, since a monitor or TV speaker does not have
a good BASS response either. ENJOY! Any questions or
comments welcomed: ROBERT A. TURNER, BINARY SYSTEMS,

SUPER COMICS+
Jim Bennett

Anyone who enjoys cartoons will find that SUPER
COMICS+ is a whole lot of fun and extremely easy to
use - even if you don't have much of an artistic
flair!

I originally sold this program through E.Z.Friendly
Software, but now in the interest of promoting the
merits of the CoCo, I am releasing this program into
public domain. Honestly, I think that this is one
of the most fun programs ever written for the CoCo.

With this program, you will be able to create comic
strips from 1 to 9 panels in length. It has drivers
for Tandy DMP printers and IBM mode printers. Al-
though, the program will run on a CoCo 2, it really
"shows its stuff" on a 512K CoCo 3 with RAM disk. =>
____________________________________________________

A spring-centered joystick is required. Unfortunate-
ly, a mouse or joystick which is not self-centering
will not work satisfactorily.

Documentation accompanies the program. Simply RUN
"SC+DOCS", select (S)creen display or (P)rinter hard
copy. To pause the display or printing, press any
key. If printing, make certain that your baud rate
is set and the top of the paper is positioned even
with the print head. The printed documentation is
8 pages in length and provides detailed instructions
on every aspect of SUPER COMICS+.

To use SUPER COMICS+, RUN"C+". If it is the first
time it has been run, you will be asked to give data
for configuration. When the work screen appears, =>
____________________________________________________

you will see a series of 15 icons at the top. Under
the icons is the comic strip panel. You can click
on an icon and draw, paint, erase, make lines, cir-
cles, boxes, magnify, move, load, save, and print.
In addition, there is a clip art option which pro-
vides face shapes, eyes, noses, mouths, ears, hair,
and hands. The RAINBOW review of the program, said
that you can use the clip art just like Mr. Potato
Head.

I am proud to present this program to the CoCo
Friends and hope that it gives you and your family
members many hours of enjoyment!

SUPER COMICS+ (cont'd)
Jim Bennett

If you do not have a self-centering joystick but you
do have one of the inexpensive, black joysticks, I
can suggest a simple remedy - a 2 inch rubber band!
Put one end over the lever, wrap the rubber band
around so that it passes underneath the joystick
and comes up the other side where you loop that end
over the lever also. With a little adjustment of the
tension on the rubber band, you can create a make-
shift self-centering joystick which will perform
fairly well with SUPER COMICS+. Remember, when the
joystick lever is in the center the cursor on the
work screen will remain in one place; movement of
the lever in any direction will cause the cursor to
move and to continue the movement until the lever is
in the center again.
                                              =>
____________________________________________________

The documentation which you can display on your
monitor or print on your printer, is the complete
text of the original instruction manual. For obvious
reasons, the illustrations are absent. However,
if you would like a copy of the original 24-page
manual, I will be happy to send you a copy for the
nominal cost of $5 to cover printing and mailing.

The program is very user-friendly. Anyone who has
computer experience should be able to use the major
features without even reading the documentation.
However, there are some features which are not very
obvious. Also, you will want to read the documenta-
tion in order to learn the procedure for printing a
comic strip.
                                         =>

I know that some people may be disappointed to see
that this program uses PMODE 4 graphics instead of
HSCREEN graphics. Nevertheless, I would argue that
PMODE 4 is more appropriate for black and white car-
toon art, that saving and loading graphics is faster
and takes less disk space, and that there is a lot
more clip art available.

If you want to contact me with comments, questions,
or you would like a copy of the original manual, you
can write to me at the following address:

disk. THANKS Jim, for this GREAT TREAT! =*

THE MINI-CHESS TEST
RICK COOPER

CHESTEST.BAS is a program that let's you practice
checkmating with 1) king and queen, 2) king and pawn
3) king and rook, and 4) king, knight, and bishop.
It's a mini-chess game in that the board is only 4
squares by 4 squares.

THE OBJECTIVE IS TO CHECKMATE THE KING IN EACH OF
THE FOUR SITUATIONS IN AS FEW MOVES AS POSSIBLE. All
four positions are winnable and you'll get a judge-
ment statement at the end of the exercise to tell
you how you did. Remember, the fewest possible moves
is your aim. It's possible to use as few as 13 total
moves! CAN YOU DO IT?

Here's some instructions. Upon RUNning CHESTEST,
you'll soon see the display screen. On the left =>
____________________________________________________

are three boxes. One displays the current board
(1-4), the number of moves you've made, and displays
CHECK, CHECKMATE, or STALEMATE when those situations
occur. The second box will display ILLEGAL if you
try to make an illegal move and also the result of
the round. The third box keeps track of wins and
draws (you can't lose). On the right side of the
screen is help for how to move the pieces.

Each board starts with the two kings in their start
positions (for CHESTEST). White (that's you) moves
first. When the cursor is flashing on one of your
pieces, press ENTER to pick it up. Then use the
arrow keys and ENTER to set it down at your desired
destination. You may add your additional piece(s) by
pressing the first letter of it's name when it's =>
____________________________________________________

your move. Then move the cursor to the desired
destination square and press ENTER. Here's a hint
for the second board. On this board the only piece
you may add is a pawn. You must promote the pawn to
win that position. When the round is over you'll
be prompted to press a key to continue.

The second round is king & pawn vs king. Please note
that white is moving up the board. You can finish
the black king in 4 moves. Round 3 is king & rook vs
king. You can do this in 3 moves. The last round is
king, bishop, & knight vs king. This is the hardest
and is POSSIBLE in four moves. GOOD LUCK!

CHESTEST.BAS has been pretty well documented for
those who like to see what makes a program tick! =*

"WRITER"
Jim Bennett

"WRITER" is a program which makes letter writing
simple, quick, and easy. The program has 2 parts:
"WRITE.BAS" and "WRITE.BIN", both of which must be
on the disk that you are using.

To use the program, first set your printer's BAUD
rate with the correct POKE, make sure that your
printer is on line, the paper is positioned correct-
ly, and then RUN "WRITE". The rest will be pretty
much self-explanatory.

The first prompt will ask if you want your address
at the top of the page and, if you do, how many
lines. Make certain to count the date as a line.

                                           =>
____________________________________________________

Next, the program will ask if you want to use an
inside address (the address of the person you are
writing to) and, if so, how many lines.

Then you will be asked to enter the greeting or the
salutation (Dear Joe, Hello Jane! etc.). Make sure
that you add the appropriate punctuation mark when
you enter the greeting.

Now, you are ready to type the body of your letter.
This part of the program is basically a line editor.
You will notice that you can backspace. When the
line is long enough, it will be printed. However,
words will not "wrap around". If you are a fast
typist, you will have to be careful that the first
                                            =>
____________________________________________________

word of the line is typed correctly. At the point
where the computer sends the line to the printer, it
is possible to type ahead of the editor.

Press ENTER once to begin a new paragraph. Press
the down arrow to go to the closing of the letter.

I hope that this little program is helpful to you in
using your CoCo. It doesn't have any fancy frills,
but it's simple and easy to use. If you have any
questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

THE DUNGEON DEPTHS
ELAD REMARK

    This graphics game requires a 512K COCO3,monitor
and joystick. It is available as orphanware from the
MI&CC DISK LIBRARY.
The goal of the game is simple enough. Just make
it through the ten levels and gain the 'POWER ORB'.
There's plenty of monsters to shoot at in this one,
but there is also a time limit to complete a level.
If you fail a level you have 10 seconds to
decide on restarting at that level. The 512K COCO is
needed becuase of the sound disk that comes with the
game (28 grans). A hardcopy of the instructions is
obtainable on the game disk(or to screen).
This program features an opening soundtrak that
was produced with 'STUDIO WORKS' from OBLIQUE TRIAD
and a picture of a red dragon that was down-loaded
from a BBS. The author (Floyd Resler) states =>
____________________________________________________

that the artist of the dragon is unknown, but upon
running the program someone's name is clearly shown
on the far right side (K. Miller).
While not an arcade quality game the program is a
great example of how versatile home programmers can
be. It is worth more that the $3 MI&CC members are
charged for it.

Tandy's Little Wonder, The Book
Raymond Berney

I first saw an ad for "Tandy's Little Wonder, The
Color Computer 1980-1991" in Mid Iowa & Country CoCo
Upgrade #18. I thought it was a great idea, but I
remembered a 1985-86 plan to publish a CoCo history
book (which fell through). Then I saw a second ad
for the book in the May 1993 RAINBOW. Then I knew
that this offer was valid! So I rushed off an order
for a copy. Both ads forecast a release date of May
10, 1993. This proved false, as I got my copy at the
end of April. And I was very thrilled. Not only did
I get a well-constructed 8.5" x 11" paperback book
with bright yellow covers, I got a preview copy of
"the world of 68' micros" magazine. Well, at least a
4 page version. (Shades of 1st RAINBOW) The layout &
categories were discussed in clear and concise
detail, so I could understand what I can expect =>

OS-9 to RS-Dos Transfers
Kent Lorentzen

I have used three different programs to move files
to and from OS-9. The one I use most now is from
Burke & Burke. This is actually a group of OS-9
Commands and a RS-Dos program to make RS-Dos disks
readable under OS-9. These come with The Burke &
Burke R.S.B.* Disk. You may get them form Burke &
Burke; P.O. Box 733 Maple Valley, WA 98038.
Telephone (800) 237-2407. The price in their last
ad is $39.95 plus $4.00 shipping.

I also have and use RsDos which came with the OS-9
software for the Disto Super Controller II. This
command works under OS-9 also and was written by Bob
Santy. I don't know if it is still available. Also
this requires the Disto L-II version of CC3Disk.
                                            =>
____________________________________________________

The other transfer program I have used is also a
group of commands under OS-9. These came with
O-Pak from Frank Hogg Laboratory; 770 James Street
Syracuse NY 13203. Telephone (315) 474-7856
These commands are very simular to Burke & Burkes,
however they only worked with Level I OS-9.

All three methods have worked well for me with both
the Burke & Burke and Disto programs still in use.
The only problem I have with any of these programs
is that they will only access the front side of my
double sided drives. But they work great on 35
track single sided RS-Dos disks.

OS-9,MS-DOS,FLEX,RS-DOS XFERS.
Robert Allen Turner

In issue #13 of CFDM, Jim Bennett mentioned the
Granite Computer Systems File Transfer Utility as a
possible solution to the OS-9 to RS-DOS file trans-
fer dilemma. However, it was not mentioned that this
set of utilities can also transfer files back and
forth between: Disk BASIC, OS-9, FLEX (anyone remem-
ber that one?), and MS-DOS. There are restrictions
on just what can be transferred between each and
this varies with each OS. The GCS File Transfer
Utilities for COCO is available in two versions:
Multi-View version $54.95
Standard version $44.95
Note that you will need SDISK (CoCo 1/2) or SDISK3

PRINTING RICKETT'S PICS
Norm Barson

Orval Carden asked about printing Rickett's HSCREEN4
pictures on the NX-1000 printer. Yes, it can be done
-- and also on the NX-1020! If you purchased your
printer from Dayton Associates, you received a Soft-
ware Support Disk. (If you bought it elsewhere, I'm
sure Dayton will sell you a copy.)

I borrowed the NX-1000 Software disk from Dick Potts
and followed the onscreen procedure with my NX-1020.
Once your picture is on the screen (in B&W), press
RESET. Insert the Software disk, and RUN"START". At
the first menu, select (7) Color Super Gemprint; at
the next menu, select (3) Hi Res Color SGP; when
asked, enter 4 for your HSCREEN #.

Now, comes the difficult part. When your picture =>
____________________________________________________

is redisplayed it will be in weird colors. Based on
your recollection of the B&W picture, decide which
areas will be Black, White, and Grey -- HSCREEN4 has
only four colors. Redefine the slot colors using
White (0000), Grey (1000), and Black (2000). For the
fourth slot, you'll have to decide which of these
three to duplicate.

You must sit patiently while the printer goes thru
the four-color print cycle, even though it only
prints the last -- black. With proper selection of
the slot colors, your printed picture will look
quite good.

I have not tried using the colored versions of
Steve's Pics. But, the procedure would be the =>

same except you now use shades of red and black.

The NX-1020 Software uses the same procedure with a
minor difference. At the first menu, select (3)
Graphics Utilities. From this point on, everthing
is the same.

Although there are differences in the two printers,
printing in graphics mode is apparently identical. I
have noted, however, that, in printing HSCREEN2
pictures with the NX-1020 Software there is a bug
in the programming which offsets the yellow color
pass by about 1/16". (With the NX-1000 Software, the
yellow is properly aligned!) Fortunately, yellow
being so light, it is not too noticeable. Perhaps,
later versions have corrected this. =*

RESPONSE TO GIFTOCM3
GODFREY J. MOLL

CFDM has again demonstrated that it brings the
COCO Family together! I received Programs to con-
vert /GIF Pictures to /CM3 Pictures and much more
from CoCo Friends ARTHUR S. HALLOCK from Bremerton,
Washington and LARRY K. LARAWAY from Deming, New
Mexico. Larry also provided a /NIB to /CM3 conver-
sion Program -- I'll be busy for MONTHS!
My earlier question about converting ROMPAKS to
DISK was very quickly answered with SOFTWARE provid-
ed by NORMAN BARSON from East Brunswick, New Jersey
and DANN McCONNELL from Kellog, Idaho. My only WISH
now is that there were more hours in the day to be
at the keyboard of my COCO!
MANY THANKS to my NEW COCO FRINDS!

USE OF COCOUTIL IBM>COCO
GODFREY J. MOLL

RICK:
In your work to convert an IBM compatible pic-
ture file to CoCo you used the 'COCOUTIL' Program by
MARK DATA PRODUCTS -- sold by MicroCom Software. My
friend in New Orleans has been attempting to use the
'COCOUTIL' to convert Pictures for me, but has not
been successful in using the CoCo FORMAT Command --
we have only been successful if I send an already
formatted CoCo Disk.
Do you have any suggestions for my Friend?
Have you used the FORMAT command and checked it
on a CoCo3?
Are you going to sell the Translat Program that
limits the SLOT file to 16 colors?
     Another breakthrough by RICK!
                        Thanks, Godfrey        =>

RICK: Please see my response in LETTERS TO THE
EDITOR concerning transfer of PC pics to CoCo. (I do
not consider myself an expert on this subject.) The
copy of COCOUTIL which I have, requires a compatible
with two 5 1/4" disk drives. The only one I have
access to (with that configuration) is at school and
is not, otherwise, in use. (I have to get it from
storage and set it up whenever I want to use it.)

I have not tried to FORMAT with COCOUTIL, so I can't
answer that question.

As to whether I'll make "the TRANSLAT program"
available, I must say "no" at present because there
really is no such program (just a number of little
procedures and "awful little programs"). But.. =>

if I ever do perfect a technique, I'll certainly
make it available to the Friends!

VIP WAS UPGRADED TO COCO 3.
ROBERT ALLEN TURNER

In issue #13 of CFDM, Rick Cooper (our mentor and
true CoCoFriend!!) presented a question from Richard
Eickholtz. Was the VIP series of software ever upgr-
aded to the CoCo 3. The answer is, yes, but I'm not
sure if it's still available. All VIP programs were
upgraded for the CoCo 3, and low-cost upgrades were
offered for owners of earlier versions. You might
try calling SD Enterprises at: (805) 566-1317. If
the owner is still there, you might be able to find
the software. The address was: SD Enterprises, PO
Box 621, Carpinteria, CA 93013. Since this was a PO
Box address, if the company is no longer around, you
probably won't succeed in contacting them via the
mail. The phone call might prove more fruitious.
