"ABOUT CFDM"
Rick Cooper

COCO FRIENDS DISK MAGAZINE is dedicated to those who
still enjoy running under RS DOS. It will deal with
that format exclusively.

A primary goal is to keep the COCO community strong.
By providing a unique means of communication, maybe
old fires will be rekindled as you and I share our
knowledge and experiences!

The success of this effort depends on each one who
becomes a subscriber. Everyone must contribute his/
her two cents in the form of articles, programs,
opinions, experiences, etc. If this happens we will
all look forward to the next issue. (Check out the
manual with your starter kit for details on how to
submit material.) Now let's have some fun!!! =*

CFDM HAS A NEW LOGO!!
RICK COOPER

Yes! CFDM has a new logo. In a very, very, closely
contested vote, the entry of Jim Bennett eeked out
the victory! Jim's logo will now become our official
logo and will grace the startup screen of each CFDM
issue. THANKS Jim for our new logo and congrats for
having the winning entry! (Jim will receive a small
but useful prize.)

And to all the other entrants we say THANKS for
participating. Without your interest the contest
would not have been so enjoyable. We truly saw many
logos which would have done us proud! I hope we can
have another contest which will generate as much
interest and as much hard work as this one did! And
THANKS to all those who participated by voting! Your
input was greatly appreciated!! =*

Hang Glider
James J. Gibbons

In Pennsylvania, Hang gliding is a very active
sport. Near Renovo, in central Pennsylvania, people
come from nearby states to get their chance to jump
off the steep cliffs above the Susquehanna River to
hang glide their way to the bottom. This is a
different picture for me as you can see, but a
challenge is a challenge. I had this picture and
someone had to ask me if I would try this on my
computer. Here is my attempt at this. I am not good
at portraits and so on, but when incorporated into
silhouettes I can handle it. I am going to try my
hand at more of this come summer!

PUBLIC DOMAIN LIBRARY (PT1)
SCOTT A BALDRIDGE

In vol. 11 of "CFDM" Ray Peterson had brought to our
attention a super point. Wouldn't it be nice to
have many of the files that are available on DELPHI
also available to the CFDM members that are unable
to access DELPHI?

My thoughts involve a two part plan.

                     PART ONE

Start a public domain library of about 100 disks of
top notch software. (By top notch I am referring to
the quality programs with docs.)

A listing of the software would be available =>>>
____________________________________________________

each month in the POTPOURRI section of CFDM.

Pricing for the software would be as follows:
            1-6 diskettes $3.00 each
            6 and up $2.50 each
This pricing reflects enough to cover the cost of
disks, postage, and mailers with a little extra to
be put into a "DELPHI-ON-DISK" fund.

I do have some P.D. software in which to start a
library, but much would need to be purchased. It is
for this reason that the library would have to start
out small and continuously grow each month.

CFDM members could help build the library:
                                             =>>>
____________________________________________________

If you have any quality P.D. software with docs
that you would like to contribute I will keep
record of that contribution. If in turn you need
any P.D. software that is in the library it will
be sent to you free of charge.

               SECOND PART OF PLAN:
                  DELPHI-ON-DISK

If all goes well and there is good response to the
P.D. software there will be money generating in my
"DELPHI-ON-DISK" account. This money would then be
used to help defray the cost of a DELPHI membership,
and monthly charges for online time.
                                     SEE PART 2 =*

PUBLIC DOMAIN LIBRARY (PT.2)
SCOTT A. BALDRIDGE

If you have any files that you would like from
DELPHI drop me a line via mail, phone, or CFDM, I
will download the suggested file(s) and make it
available on disk for the above proces.

There is one point that I would like to stress here:

This is not a money making opportunity for myself.
I am offering my time and money in order to help
keep the CoCo community together.

All files in the library would have to be 100%
PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE ( NO ORPHANWARE) =>>>

If there is enough response to this offer, I will
undertake this project and do it to the best of my
ability.

Please send your thoughts and ideas (good or bad) to
Rick or myself.

THAEDIAK, The project continues!
RICK COOPER

I recently received a copy of James C. Mills fiction
project, Thaediak of Ishdor. You probably recall it
being reported in this section some months ago. In
that entry, James had asked for assistance from any
Friend that would care to lend their expertise.

Well, now it's several months later and the project
is REALLY shaping up well! At least two Friends have
added their expertise by working directly with James
and one other has contributed by making some of his
programs available thru CFDM.

Although not complete, Thaediak is coming along very
nicely. The story was written by James Mills. Walter
Bayer has written a professional-looking display and
Stuart Wyss-Gallifent has provided the scroll =>

routine. SUPERPUT, a ML program by Mad Mike Hoke,
is being used to display graphics in an upper window
of the screen. (You'll recall that SUPERPUT was in
a early issue of CFDM and just last month the latest
version was included. Thanks Mike!)

I predict a very impressive and enjoyable product
will be coming our way in the near future.

Congratulations to all the Friends who have taken
part in this project!

LEONARDO'S PAINTBOX
Jim Bennett

This program was my all-time best-seller when I was
actively running E.Z.Friendly Software. I consider
it to be the best program I ever wrote for the CoCo
3. It sold for $26.95 plus $2 s/h, but I am pre-
pared to offer it to the CcoCo Friends for just
$12 which includes shipping!!!

"Leonardo's Paintbox" is a graphics utility which
enables you to draw, paint, and add single pixel de-
tails using a joystick. The utility will then write
a BASIC program which will recreate your graphic
just exactly the way you drew it (only much faster!)

I have included a demo program which was created en-
tirely with "Leonardo's Paintbox". RUN the program
                     (cont'd on PAGE 2)      =>
____________________________________________________

and see for yourself what "Leonardo's Paintbox" can
do. Then LIST or LLIST the program and see what
kind of program the utility is capable of creating
for you.

You can use this program to create illustrations,
titles, charts, graphs, game graphics, and just
about any kind of graphic that you desire.

"Leonardo's Paintbox" was reviewed in the March 1989
issue of RAINBOW. It requires a CoCo 3, disk drive,
and self-centering (deluxe type) joystick.

The demonstration program is titled "LP-DEMO.BAS".
It also has a data file "LP-DEMO.DAT" which goes
with it.             (Cont'd on PAGE 3)     =>
____________________________________________________

If you would like a copy of "Leonardo's Paintbox",
just send me a check or money order for $12 and I'll
send the program right out to you! If you enjoy
graphics, I know that you will have a lot of fun
using this prgram!

THE COCOPRO! SOFTWARE !!!
RICK COOPER

As reported earlier, I have purchased a lease of the
software belonging to COCOPRO!. I'll try to give
you the particulars on how you can get a super deal
on these programs. There are a few things I should
tell you from the start. Please keep these in mind
before purchasing these packages.

1) The original prices of these 13 packages totaled
around $400. Last advertised sale prices totaled
nearly $300. This is quality software. ELEVEN OF
THESE PACKAGES ARE OS-9 ORIENTED AND I CANNOT BE
OF ASSISTANCE TO YOU IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT
THEIR USE. PLEASE BE ADVISED OF THIS BEFORE YOU
   ORDER THE OS-9 PACKAGES.

                                               =>
____________________________________________________

2) The documentation to each package will be in the
form of loose leaf sheets, with 4 pages to a
sheet. You may bind these into booklets if you
   wish.

3) This software was quite expensive for me to buy!
I hope you will help me recoup my outlay by
taking advantage of this special offer while
keeping in mind that I ONLY ASK YOU TO BUY WHAT
   YOU WANT AND CAN USE!
----------------------------------------------------
At this time I can offer you the first special set
of packages. Those are SIMPLY BETTER and V-TERM.
Over the next few months I will be preparing the
documentation to more of the packages. (Please read
about the SUBSCRIPTION OFFER.)           =>
____________________________________________________

Here's the deal: You may purchase any or all of the
packages listed in Part 2 of this article. The best
deal is the SUBSCRIPTION PURCHASE. This means you
will recieve SIMPLY BETTER and V-TERM immediately
and each month, for 4 months, you will receive the
next package in the series. Each package contains
2 to 3 of the software packages (see Part 2 for a
list of the packages).

I hope many of you will want all of this software.
For those unfamiliar with OS-9, I do not advise
buying the OS-9 packages (YOU MUST HAVE OS-9 LEVEL 2
FOR THESE PACKAGES!). I do STRONGLY recommend V-TERM
and SIMPLY BETTER! SIMPLY BETTER is simply the best
word-processor for the CoCo.
  (PLEASE SEE PART 2) =*

TYPALINE 80
DAVE OTIS

Starting in 1986 I wrote a word processor for
my own use in writing and printing short text files
more conveniently, I thought, than my favorite
professionally written word processor,TELEWRITER 64
and TELEWRITER 128. The latter, especially, is a
great word processor. However, what I had in mind
would permit easier and more direct control over the
printer, its fonts and margins, etc. Also, it would
be entirely menu-driven so I wouldn't have to remem-
ber a lot of commands. The result of my long and
continuing efforts was TYPALINE 80, in versions for
each of my printers: the Okidata 92 and the Citizen
GSX-140 (the latter is identical to the Tandy DMP-
240). It has its drawbacks, largely because it is
written in BASIC: a limit of 120 lines of text and
it  is  a little slow - - - a fast typist can out =>
____________________________________________________

run it. I'm not a fast typist, so it doesn't bother
me. TYPALINE 80 does have some good features, some
of which I'll mention here. First, it is completely
menu-driven and second, it allows direct control
over font, CPI, margins, tabs, underlines, italics,
emphasis, enhanced (if the printer is so equipped),
line centering, line rubout, wordwrap, justify and
output to memory or direct to the printer, all from
the keyboard. It functions, therefor, either as an
electronic typewriter emulator or a word processor.
From the View Page screen, it also has a line editor
that offers additional functions: block move, copy,
delete and print, sorting, a WYSIWYG display that
shows italics, emphasized & enhanced in contrasting
colors, on-screen underlining and margins as set and
as they will be printed. It also has a global =>

search & replace or delete feature. The program runs
in high speed mode except for disk I/O operations. I
have also written a version for the Tandy DMP130 but
I haven't used it much (it's for my daughter's sys-
tem. She says it works fine).

So, if you have one of those printers (or even
if you don't) and would like to try TYPALINE 80, I'd
be glad to send you a copy for $5 to cover the disk
& postage. The disk will include all 3 versions plus
a number of mergeable modules for multicolumn format
and print, address label print, external editors and
data files with more detailed explanations, etc.

Does anyone know where I can get the "CRC 1-MEG

the memory board while the CoCo was open.

1-800-BBS?
EGAD! IT'S ELAD!

IN A PREVIOUS ISSUE SOMEONE ASKED IF CFDM SHOULD
START A BBS SERVICE. IN THAT ARTICLE AN "800" NUMBER
WAS CONSIDERED NECCESSARY TO SAVE USERS MONEY. EGAD,
I THOUGHT, WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!
NOT!!! SOMEONE HAS TO PAY THE COST OF USING THE
PHONE - BE IT THE USER OR THE SYSOP. I USE AT&T ON
MY LONG DISTANCE CALLS SO I DECIDED TO ASK THEM
ABOUT AN "800" RESIDENTIAL NUMBER. OUCH!!!
   A ONE-TIME SET-UP FEE OF $10.00 AND A MONTHLY FEE
OF $5.50 DOESN'T SOUND BAD. BUT A 27.5 CENT/MINUTE
CHARGE DURING REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS (20 CENT AFTER
HOURS) IS HIGH. EVEN IF YOU COULD ONLY CALL BETWEEN
5 PM & 8 PM THE COST TO THE SYSOP FOR THAT 3-HOUR
PERIOD WOULD BE $24.00. IF THE BBS IS OPEN FOR THOSE
HOURS 5 DAYS A WEEK THE COST WOULD BE $120.00/WEEK!!

DCM-PAK MOD
DALE KRAMER

I was here reading the manual on "V-TERM" when I
remembered that Marty Goodman wrote an article on
changing the DCM-Pak (#26-2228) for use with a disk
based terminal program. I looked up the June 1991
issue of RAINBOW to peruse the article.
Marty stated that pulling up pin # 20 and tying
it to pin # 28 would disable the DCM-PAK ROM and
permit using alternative software. Instead of cut-
ting pin # 20 as suggested, I desoldered it and
carefully pulled it up through the circuit board.
I then soldered a short wire from pin #20 to pin
# 28 and re-assembled the DCM-PAK.
The DCM-PAK was loaded into slot #3 of my MPI
(#3124) and then I turned my system on. After load-
ing "V-TERM" I became familiar with it by setting
various parameters. With some confidence ( => )

built up I hooked up the phone line. But who am I
gonna call? Why, DELPHI of course! They have a toll-
free # to use for new subscribers.
I dialed the number, got a carrier tone, pressed
the 'CONNECT' button on the DCM-PAK, and hung up the
phone. Press RETURN a couple of times and up comes
DELPHI! The DCM-PAK and V-TERM were performing as
promised.
I almost signed on but decided against it because
I didn't know how costly it might be. Besides, a
300 baud modem is slow by today's standards. With a
little more information and a better modem I might
jump on line. Still, the experience was thrilling!
In an earlier issue I suggested that people with
modems and hard-drives submit an article about their

hope that others get something from this. A hard-

To use your printer as a line typewriter, turn on
your printer. Type on the screen the baud rate you
want to use (I.E. POKE150,N) and ENTER. Type:
   10 CLS:LINEINPUT;A$:PRINT#-2,A$:GOTO10
You are allowed to type up to 255 characters per
line, however, pressing the ENTER key will dump the
line to the printer. Before dumping to the printer,
LEFT ARROW lets you backspace, SHIFT LEFT ARROW
clears the line, SPACEBAR for blank or forward
spacing. To play with some different sounds, type:
         10 O=&HFF20:POKE&HFF23,63:N=200:FORX=4 TO N
         STEP8:POKEO,X:POKEO,N:NEXT
         20 EXEC&HADFB:GOTO10
By changing the N value (max 255), X value and/or
step rate value, you can get different sounds. Then
try the high speed.                         =>

If you want a different key click in your programs,
try this:
POKE&HFF21,&H3C:POKE&HFF21,&H34
What it does is turning the cassette relay on and
off. Remember the CLICKER for the MAX-10 word-
processor from Colorware?

If you have a problem with Home Publisher, try
CIII PagesE v. 2.5 from Coless Computer Design.

At this time I like to thank Mike (MadMike) Hoke for

to program in HSCREEN2. If I only knew what to do

CHINA SEA
Norm Barson

On the far wall of the room in which I have my
computer there is a framed Chinese silk screen we
have had for some time. I did my best to reproduce
it with CoCoMax 3. Since the original is 45" wide by
15" high, I had to compress it horizontally, but I
managed to squeeze in most of the significant
elements. Except for filling some areas with solid
background color, most of the work was done at the
pixel level in the Zoom mode. For this picture, I
did not find it necessary to make use of the
"patterns" at the bottom of the CoCoMax screen.

I must apologize to George Corbin, who, in Issue 8,
made the plea that pictures use only 13 colors in
the palette so that he could make a jigsaw puzzle
of them. I am also a fan of Rick's =>

PUZZLES, so I have diligently tried to restrict
myself to 13 colors. Unfortunately, I have not been
successful. I usually end up filling the palette
with 16 colors and wishing I had a few more. I
promise to keep trying, though.

HAWAIIAN CANOE RACE
GODFREY J. MOLL

On September 5,1992 Muriel and I were able to
see the start of the Queen Lililuokalani Long Dist-
ance Canoe Races at Kailua-Kona Hawaii -- just a few
days before Hurricane INIKI! The race begins with a
Hawaiian Ceremonial Blessing at the Dockside Beach.
The 87 Men's Outrigger Canoes (15 of KOA Wood and 72
of Fiberglass) stretched out 3/4 of a mile into the
sea to begin the 18 mile "sprint" from Kailua Bay to
Keone'ele Cove at Puuhonua O Honaunau.
To prevent a creeping 'start' they require pad-
dlers 2 through 5 to be IN the water 10 seconds be-
fore the actual start. At the drop of the flag pad-
dlers hefted themselves into the canoes and dug in.
A virtual maelstrom erupts as untold amounts of en-
ergy are applied to 522 paddles - this in disturb-
ingly close quarters.                            =>
____________________________________________________

IRONMAN crews are of six paddlers that go the
full distance -- most crews have eight members and
are able to switch two at a time from the sea with-
out missing a stroke! This is accomplished with Es-
cort Boats that lace the ocean with their wakes as
they seek out their canoes to position for the first
change after 15 to 20 minutes. Canoes are buffeted
by boat wakes and frequently take on water. Steers-
men have all they can handle to keep a decent course
The winning crew moved their 400 pound canoe each
mile at a tick over 6 minutes for an overall Time of
1:48.45!
The Women's Race begins in reverse, after the
men beach their canoes. There were 57 canoes in this
race. Each year they switch the starting places. I
did not get their finishing times, but we did see =

them come into the beach at Kailua-Kona.
The Picture "CANOERAC/NIB" was created using a
RASCAN Digitizer to pick up the Queen and Canoes and
then CoCoMaxIII to reduce them to proper size and
duplicate the canoes. I also use these pictures to
illustrate my letters using MAX-10 to print them on
the DMP-105 Printer that I have with me in Florida.
At HOME I have a STAR NX1000 Rainbow to do COLOR
prints.
If anyone has questions about HAWAII, I'd be
glad to answer them as Muriel and I love to spend
time on the Islands. Till February 28,1993: =*

Hi fellow CoCo users, my name is Michael Lewis
and I live in Moundsville, WV.
I've been using a CoCo 3 for about 2 years now.
Before Rick's "CFDM" came along I came very close to
boxing it up and going the "PC" route. Now with new
programs coming in every month I find new ways to
get more use out of this machine.
     My system consists of a CoCo 3 (512K), CM-8
monitor, FD-502 disk drive (Single side) and a
DMP 105 printer.
Mostly I use the CoCo for writing letters,
drawing, and to run a data base program.
Some of my software includes "Max-10", "TW-128"
"CoCo Max 3", "Data Form III", "Home Publisher",
"Multi-Vu", "OS-9 Level 2", "DeskMate" and a ton =>

My other hobby is playing "Sega Genesis" video

I am a Southern Baptist Pastor. I have been us-
ing a CoCo since 1986 (2, then 3). My church is on
the CoCoIII as well. I have made many modifications
of the POST program from the Rainbow to keep up with
our maillist of several hundred entries. The other
main program we use is Simply Better word processor.
We use it for many, many church files. Our CoCo
does everything we need, except I would prefer a
better spread sheet program than what is offered by
Deskmate. I do plan to write a BASIC program for
treasurer's report.
I do enjoy writing BASIC text related programs.
I have used OS9 to some degree, but I do not care
to wait around on my disk drive so much. Between
"Simply Better" and my own programs, I can do just
about anything I need my computer to do. =>

SOUND OFF ABOUT RAINBOW
RICK COOPER

Do you have a favorite story about THE RAINBOW? Can
you recall a particular program or article that you
really enjoyed? How about a visit to a RAINBOW FEST?
Are your considerable programming skills due to your
typing in and studying programs in THE RAINBOW?

Now's your chance to tell us about it! I'd really
love to hear your story and see it in this section.

Let me reminisce...

When I first started with CoCo, in 1981, there was a
period of about a year before I heard about RAINBOW.
I did subscribe to HOT COCO and COLOR COMPUTER NEWS.
Unfortunately these fine publications didn't last
very long.                                   =>
____________________________________________________

Once I did see THE RAINBOW, I did subscribe and have
up until it's final issue.

I remember how delighted I was to have two of my
programs appear in the EDUCATION issue, September,
1988. BAD WOLF is a program for primary students
(and younger) to practice their ABC's while trying
to avoid the BAD WOLF. STATES is a drill program
for learning your states and capitals. (USSTATES, a
program in UNBELIEVABLE #3, is an improved version
of that program.) RAINBOW'S resident artist had even
drawn a picture of the BAD WOLF. An interesting note
here is that one of RAINBOW'S requirements was that
you write up an article to go with your program.
They would always change the article to fit the
alloted space and also make grammar editions. =>
____________________________________________________

My articles always had plenty of grammar editions!

I made two visits to RAINBOW's offices in Prospect,
KY. It was a thrill to meet Cray Augsburg, Greg
Law, Ira Barsky, Kim Lewis, and many of the other
RAINBOW staff members. The reason for the first
visit was to talk about the COCO GALLERY ON DISK,
which I did for RAINBOW. I'll never forget being
introduced to Lonnie Falk and his complimentary
remarks about that program!

Both of my visits to RAINBOW headquarters were most
enjoyable! And the folks there sure treated me with
gracious hospitality. Thanks Lonnie, Cray, and the
gang for all the enjoyment you've sent our way!

THE LAST RAINBOW
RICK COOPER

Yesterday, April 16th, I received my last issue of
THE RAINBOW. "The time had come" to say goodbye to
the magazine that made the CoCo so popular and so
enjoyable to thousands of us for so many years!

Maybe it's for the best...no longer was THE RAINBOW
a source of hope for brighter days. Watching it
shrink from a few hundred pages to just a few had
been like watching a good friend slowly waste away.

Many of the "stars" of the CoCo community have also
vanished in the last few months. Big name companies
and big name programmers have suddenly disappeared.
The fact that the CoCo is no longer manufactured and
no plans for a new version, has adversely effected
the staying power of CoCo! =>
____________________________________________________

As for the last issue, I enjoyed reading the letters
from those who summarized their relationship with
THE RAINBOW and the CoCo. Please note that a few
stated that they were still available for support!

As for me, I am most interested in how many will
continue their involvement in organized CoCoing. It
seems that less than 4000 were on THE RAINBOW's
subscription roll at the end. It seems realistic to
expect that a portion of those will try CFDM.

The best scenario is for our membership to increase
dramatically, giving us a real chance at enduring
for a few years in the future. The next couple of
months will be a most crucial time for the CoCo
community and for CFDM!                   =>
____________________________________________________

After this crucial period, our enrollment will never
again be larger. It will always be smaller. So we
really need to get a large number of new Friends,
keep our disk magazine fun, and nuture the continued
participation of all our Friends.

You can help by making sure your subscription does
not lapse. I will try to help by placing an order
form in your mailer with your last issue. Please
keep us strong by promptly resubscribing.

The only guarantee I can offer is my word that when
CFDM is finished, any remaining issues on your
subscription will be fully refunded. I promise not
to mention this subject again!

I NEED YOUR INPUT! Since the early issues of CFDM,
many have asked "why don't you go to a 40 track
format?" The answer was and is, "because some
Friends may have drives that will not support 40
tracks." But...the facts are 1) we really don't know
how many, if any, of our Friends have drives that
won't support 40 tracks and 2) we would like to be
able to share more of the many contributions that
are coming our way! LET ME ASSURE YOU THAT IT IS
NOT MY INTENTION THAT ANY SHOULD BE LEFT BEHIND! If
we do go 40 track, it will mean more work for me.
More items to choose, more duplication time, and
probably more room for errors! I am willing and will
do that work if it can be satisfactorily arranged.
So...
                                           =>
____________________________________________________

On the PROGRAM/SIDE of this issue, #16, you will
find a program called GO40TRAK.BIN. From a cold
start, LOADM "GO40TRAK":EXEC. This will put you in
the 40 track mode. Nothing really happens except
your computer will now allow access to five more
tracks on your diskettes.

To check and see if you truly have 40 track ability,
PLACE A NEW DISK OR AN OLD USED ONE THAT YOU DON'T
MIND ERASING in drive 0. (Please don't use your
master copy of a CFDM disk for this experiment!)
Next, type DSKINI0 and press ENTER. If you get an
IO message, this may mean your drive can't handle
the extra tracks. Just to be sure, please try a
different diskette.
                                          =>
____________________________________________________

If the OK sign is displayed, type PRINT FREE(0). If
the message returns 78, then your drive will support
40 tracks and all is well.

If not...please send me a postcard stating this. I
REALLY DO NEED TO KNOW! Remember, if no IO's and a
return of 78 when doing a FREE(0) then you can go
40 tracks. Otherwise, please send that postcard!

Another month is gone and much of what we consider
the CoCo World has passed with it! COCOPRO!, T&D
Software, and THE RAINBOW are now just history and
fond memories! But we go merrily along and hope to
continue for a long time to come. I hope you'll
help keep us marching by staying faithful with your
support. Sometimes it seems that our world is so
small and maybe even about to end. Then we quickly
remember those we've recently chatted with or the
enthusiastic letters that came in the mail. We must
continue and keep the spirit of companionship and
Friendship alive! And we will...

likely going to have a Bonus Disk!)

Continuity and Thanks
Kent Lorentzen

Rick,
I voted for one logo since in my opinion a logo
is supposed to be something that when you see it
you recognize the company or product as being the
same and hopefully standing for quality. And my
experience so far with CFDM has been that of a
quality production.
Many of the runners up I am sure are too good to
be lost or forgotten so how about having a place of
honor or some other place inside the magazine for
them or have them appear on a startup program on the
back side of the disk.
Thanks to you for a great Disk magazine and
getting so many CoCoists involved. I am looking
forward to the coming issues.

Please EXTEND and........
Victor Neufeldt

Dear Rick, Because I'm enjoying this all so very
much I'd like to extend my subscription for another
six months and also order your Unbelievable Offer #3
It's only recently that I've started to recognize
some of names of these "TALENTED" contributors in
CFDM. You mentioned it once but it didn't "click"
for awhile. To name just a few, I've played with
your CHESSIQ Rainbow Oct '90 pg 92, played with all
5 modes of George Quellhorst's COCO-Q or PEG ME in
Rainbow Dec '89 pg 26, and Used BOOKLET in Rainbow
Jan '89 pg 24 & May '90 pg 40 by Keiran Kenny. I
said these are just a few. Now I'm thinking I might
list each one's programs, LLIST each and check for
patterns. Think I might learn something? Think
there might be TIME enough?
I like chess. Once had (still have) a set =>

that I could put the lid down on, stuff it into my
waistband and carry it around without the pieces
moving out of place. Another sailor and I played
every chance we had. Worked our circuits, answered
drills or whatever, and still usually got in a
couple of games each day.
That "BOOKLET" -- surprising how long a story one
can write in six pages. The grandkids write me, but
at the time I was sending those, they weren't
writing as much as today -- maybe I should try it
again (maybe test their memories?).
Nope, the days just aren't long enough. I have
yardwork, and painting (when the Rain lets up), but
it's always a pleasure to come back to this.
THANK YOU -- COCO's forever -- YOU Make MY Day.

SEND BACK ISSUES OF CFDM!
PAUL B. O'LEARY

Dear Rick,

I enjoyed the CFDM very much, so much in fact that I
don't want to miss any issue. Enclosed you'll find a
money order in the amount of $50. Please send me
issues #1, #3-#11. These are the 10 issues I need to
complete my collection.

I wish to thank you for all your hard work, and
coming up with such a great idea. I hope all your
subscribers understand that you need their support,
both with article submissions and financial support
by ordering all back issues of CFDM and keep their
subscription going. Again, Rick, Thanks!!
                                     - Paul O'Leary
                                            =>
____________________________________________________

RICK: And double thanks to you Paul! I've often
thought "CFDM cannot be fully appreciated unless you
saw how we got started and how far we've come!" The
first issue didn't have the repeating keys, key-
click, section entry numbers, graphics in the
magazine, ADOS modification (thanks to George Q.),
and a number of other features. We even changed one
section (from ADDRESS CORRECTION to ACTIVE COCO).
After about 5 issues the format became pretty stable
and we began to receive enough submissions to even
have choices about what went in the current issue.

I can't say enough about the wonderful contributors
we have! And I'm sure everyone has enjoyed seeing
their contribution in CFDM!
                                       =>
____________________________________________________

I'm often asked "are the back issues available?"
Yes they are. Early on I had a shelf built with 36
postbox cubby-holes. Some are devoted to software
offerings such as the UNBELIEVABLE OFFERS, some are
filled with ads, applications, and documentation.
The others hold diskette boxes with submission disks
which we've already used, CFDM master disks, and
copies of each issue (ready to hit the post office
when someone requests back issues).

I hope your collection of CFDM isn't missing any
issue. Each is an important part of the whole! Did
you realize that if your collection is complete,
you've received 18 disks (36 disk sides) for about
$75. That's about $2 per side! What a collection of
goodies our Friends have provided!! =*

THE MYSTERIOUS RED BORDER HANGUP
JOHN L DANIELS

Just a quick note to let you know of a possible fix
for the infamous red border hangup. I had this
problem occur with the last issue on about 6-7 of
the articles. I ran one of my disk analyzers and
found quite a few IO errors all over the disk. I
reformated the disk and re-copied the data and
everthing went OK. What I think might be causing
this is when I format a blank disk, I format both
sides first and then copy the original to each side.
I remember reading somewhere that disk basic has a
problem when formatting one disk after another -
something to do with the write pre-compensation
being left on. Perhaps we need to do a cold start or
the CTRL/ALT/reset trick to get the system back
where it belongs between formats.

RICK: Thanks for another entry in the "why do we
have trouble loading various files?" contest. In
the time I have spent programming CoCo I have been
confronted with numberous "bugs". I have found that
there is an answer to everything. Sometimes it just
takes longer to find the answer. I hope before CFDM
becomes history (around the year 2010) that someone
will be able to tell us why and have a very simple
antidote.

Who knows, maybe John has found the answer. I hope
so! Thanks for the note John!

VIDEO
ELAD REMARK

Just wanted to thank Ray Peterson for the neat
white on blue 32-column display in "VIDEO.BAS". In
case others are interested line 100 contains two
POKES that gives the above screen.
POKE 65469,9:POKE 65468,63. (Type RGB for normal).

I ran the program through some of the fonts and
noticed that FONT #4 gets squeezed on the right side
of the screen. I'm not a T.V. or video nut so I
don't know if it is normal. I just thought I'd
mention it.

WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF MATERIAL...
GEORGE JURECKA

.......I am more certain than ever that your product
will continue to be a success since THE RAINBOW is
folding up. If you run out of material for CFDM, may
I suggest that you explain the POKES you use in your
programs, how you get the fonts for the magazine,
"NIB" the pictures, and cram three disks worth of
data onto one disk... just unbelievable!

----------------------------------------------------
RICK: Thanks for your confidence in CFDM and for the
ideas! Hopefully we'll never run out of material!
Some time ago I mentioned making a VCR tape by
hooking my CoCo to a recorder and tape a session at
the keyboard. A few have asked when I'm going to do
that. Well..I really have good intentions on doing
that this summer. Now don't get me wrong... =>

this won't be the quality of tape that you'd rent at
your local video store. But, it should be a lot of
fun and maybe even a little informative. My idea is
to write a couple of small utilites and explain the
how and what of it. Anything useful you see on the
screen will be saved to disk and offered with the
tape. I'd also like to show you how I do the KUDOs
inside the magazine (that's the graphics). Maybe
we'll add some other things that you recommend. How
about it. Can the Friends send me some ideas of what
you'd like to see? I'd be interested in hearing your

To start this off, I would like to thank a very
close CoCo Friend, Bob Brutko of Rochester NY for

my stupid answering machine, my wife was leading
me on a force-march, which is Doctor directed. But
I ask you all, have you ever tried to walk 15

Emergency Room, and a even better Life Bird ride to
Spokane Washington's Deaconess Hospital, here I is!
The man upstairs was definitely with me that night!
I have lost 13 pounds, went from 1 pack of Ciggys a
day to virtually as few as I can get by with, and so
on to stop!!! I also miss my GOOD food, chuckle, but
for now, Lo-salt, Lo-everything is the game! And
believe me fellow COCO'ists it is sheer murder to
have COCO sitting in my room and I couldn't even use
it! But now I'm a little better, and with the aid of
some pillows and a straight back chair, I'm back at
it again! <Ctrl3>

SCRIPT FONT FOR STAR PRINTERS
Norm Barson

My first printer was a Star Micronics Delta-10. It
was before NLQ was available. The manual had in-
instructions on how to create your own font. I
thought it would be nice to be able to print script,
so I designed all the letters, numbers, etc., and
coded them so they could be "downloaded" to the
printer. A neighbor, Richard Potts, had a Star NX-10
printer. While not exactly the same, it was close
enough that he could recode my characters for that
printer.

So here is a free offer. These two programs can be
used ONLY with these two specific printers. They do
not work with earlier or later Star printers, and do
not work with any other make. So, it would be a
waste of space to submit them to CFCM. =>
____________________________________________________

But, if any Friend has either of these two printers,
drop me a line and I will send you the program for
that printer, gratis. PLEASE, PLEASE, don't ask for
the programs unless you have either the Delta or the
NX-10 printer. Otherwise, you will be disappointed
when it doesn't work.

Since my entry in the Family Tree did not include my
address, I am showing it here. (Actually, if anyone
had looked at the first few lines of each of my
programs, it appeared there.) I'll be happy to
correspond with any Friend on any subject related to
the CoCo -- whether I'm knowledgable or not!

THE 'DUKE'
Herb Schuler

We have arrived at number 11 in my promised series
of 12 music submissions. And, I've finally gotten
back to 1942 with a great Duke Ellington piece you
all know. 'DON'T GET AROUND MUCH ANYMORE' has been
recorded by a lot of stars. One often remembered...
and played often on the 40's music stations even
these days...is by Nat 'King' Cole. Today the very
best arrangement is in the 'UNFORGETTABLE' album by,
of course, Natalie Cole!! I fell in love with this
album when I first got it...and still play it often.
Natalie is an outstanding vocalist and an excellent
song-stylist. Her song interpretations are truly
UNFORGETTABLE! Contrary to my usual suggestion.....
keep your eyes open on this one. RUN "DONTGET" and
enjoy. Then listen to Natalie's album!! =>

____________________________________________________

Although we are coming to the end of the series, I
will probably submit some selections from time-to-
time as Rick can use them. Maybe you have a favorite
number you would like to hear transcribed for play
on our favorite computer. I'll probably regret that
I made this offer, but here goes: Send me the name
of your song you would like to have transcribed and
send me a copy of the sheet music (preferably piano
arrangement) if you have it. As they come in, on a
first-in, first-out basis (and if you send the music
or I have it already) I'll transcribe your song to a
disk, also place on the disk the 12 songs in the
series, and maybe even a couple extras to boot. I'll
send you that disk and maybe even submit your song
to CFDM. All this at NO COST to you. Just send the
song name and the sheet music if you have it, =>
____________________________________________________

and you'll get my offer free...not by return mail...
but as soon as time permits.

Why am I doing this? There are lots of good reasons,
but the most important is that we have a lot at
stake here with CFDM. It's our only hope now that
"THE RAINBOW" has ceased publication. We must assure
the continued interest of all of us in the success
of CFDM. We must back RICK to the limit! For certain
should CFDM fail now.......! Well you know the rest
of that line.

So if my offer stimulates a little more interest in
our COCO, then my time will have been well spent. So
start those cards and letters coming. I'll tell you
when I've had enough! Long live COCO & CFDM Herb =*

BEASTLY MIXUPS
Keiran Kenny

Many more years ago than I care to count, we kids
at home had a set of picture blocks. They were sup-
posed to have some educational value: if you could
put the blocks with the dog's head, body and legs in
the correct order that was an achievement. But we
found the game much more hilarions and interesting
if we could put the dog's head on the donkey's body
and so on.
BEASTMIX draws twelve minipictures in a frame 32
by 32: four heads, bodies and sets of legs. Drawing
takes place within a rectangle at screen center.
This was for my own convenience as I wanted to make
sure that the pictures fitted within the 32 by 32
area. As each picture is finished it is assembled on
the screen in the correct position until all four
rare and wonderful critters are on show. =>
____________________________________________________

The figures are displayed once more correctly
assembled and then displayed with their parts chosen
at random. I hope that some young child out there
will find in this random display as much reason for
laughter as we kids did.
If you want to try substituting your own pictures
for mine, make sure that there is a clearly visible
margin of at least one pixel between your picture
and all sides of the rectangle (whose dimensions are
36 by 36).
The 32 by 32 frames are stored by HGET statements
labelled 1 to 12 and putting the figures together,
correctlty or incorrectly, is achieved by HPUT ent-
ries.                                            =*

CHOLESTEROL
JOHN C. PENDLETON

RICK:

I submit the program "CHOLSTRL" only as an amateur
to fulfill my membership obligation to participate.

With so many accomplished programmers using their
fine abilities to enhance CFDM, I know myself to be
lacking (but here goes anyway).

A few years ago, I became aware that my cholesterol
was quite high. Regular blood checks were necessary
and I was placed on the blue pill. Also, about this
time "MODERN MATURITY", THE AARP MAGAZINE, published
an article about the good, moderate risk, high risk,
and very high risk according to sex and age of those
with cholesterol.                     =>
____________________________________________________

I tried to convert their figures as best I could to
print out some form that would make it easy to
monitor my results after each exam. (I was able to
drop 166 points under doctor supervision.) The
program "CHOLSTRL" was the one I used. It consists
only of various printouts.

The program, as I said, is written in a very
amateurish fashion. If any members should explore
the LLIST and have any hints or suggestions to
improve and make it more concise, I would very much
appreciate hearing from them by mail.

Thanks to all.

I hope my lady mail carrier can carry the load! =*

FRACTALS with NIB
Stuart T. Wyss-Gallifent

View text file associated with this article

I have since improved my FRACTALS program by adding
the NIB compression system to aid the loading and
saving of the fractals. Fractals tend to compress
very neatly from the typical uncompressed size of
16 granules, down to about 4 or 5 with NIB.

The program still works the same as before, with
the exception that the external save/load program
doesn't exist anymore. When saving a fractal,
the program will compress it, save it, reload it,
and decompress it, restoring the screen to what it
contained before saving. This is necessary for the
program to function correctly.

There is a FRACTAL.DOC file floating around some
where with Rick. Rick? I know its long... =*

HSCREEN 2 TO PMODE 4 "HS2TOPM4".
>>>>>[TURNER, ROBERT ALLEN]<<<<<

In issue #13 of CFDM, Jim Bennett provided a small
BASIC program that would convert an HSCREEN 2 pic-
ture to a PMODE 4 picture. Since PMODE 4 is black &
white only, Palettes 0-14 were converted to white &
Palette 15 was converted to black. This program, as
J.B. pointed out, is quite slow. Also, I tried it on
many of the pictures from CFDM, and I could not get
a creditable image, due to the conversion technique
used. I decided to develop an algorithm that might
provide better results. What I initially did was
convert even Palettes to white and odd Palettes to
black. This worked good in most cases. I wrote the
conversion program in Assembly Language for speed.
It automatically TABs 32 pixels over on the HSCREEN
2 when it does the conversion, thus converting the
center 256 pixels of the HSCREEN 2 to a PMODE 4   =>
____________________________________________________

image. This was done since the PMODE 4 screen is
only 256 pixels wide. There are two programs that
relate to this article. They are "HS2TOPM4.ASM" and
"HS2TOPM4.BIN". The /BIN file is not the result of
assembling the /ASM file. I'll explain momentarily.
I am not going to try to explain how the Assembly
program functions, as that would require quite a bit
of space. Instead, I have provided the Assembly
Source code (Disk Edtasm+ format) for your perusal.
The file "HS2TOPM4.BIN" is a BASIC program, but it
is RUN via LOADM:EXEC. I'll explain why. I assembled
the /ASM file into a /BIN file and then appended it
to the end of a BASIC program via end packing (the
same technique as used in BOOT/BAS, see G. Quell-
horsts article: "The mystery of BOOT/BAS revealed"
from a previous CFDM for info on this technique). =>
____________________________________________________

When you have a machine language file appended to a
BASIC program in this fashion, the program must NOT
be saved in ASCII format, or the M/L portion will be
destroyed. That is because an ASCII save only uses 7
bits for its data CHR$ 0-127. On characters of 128 -
255, bit 7 (the 8th bit) is dropped in an ASCII save
so these characters become 0-127. That is why the
M/L will be rendered useless in an ASCII save. In an
attempt to prevent the program from accidentally be-
ing saved in the ASCII format, I have converted the
BASIC program to a /BIN program that is RUN by LOADM
"HS2TOPM4/BIN":EXEC [ENTER]. You can save the prog-
ram as a /BAS program by LOADM:EXECing it and then
pressing [BREAK], followed by: SAVE"HS2TOPM4/BAS"
[ENTER]. The /BAS program will function the same, as
long as it is not saved in ASCII. See PART 2. => =*

"HS2TOPM4.BIN" Part 2.
((((((Turner, Robert Allen))))))

The program contains a test to see if it has been
saved in the ASCII format, and it will inform you if
this has happened. To use the program, load an
HSCREEN 2 picture into memory and then insert the
disk containing "HS2TOPM4" and type LOADM"HS2TOPM4":
EXEC [ENTER]. Answer the 'is your picture in memory'
prompt with Y (answering N exits the program). You
will then be presented with a menu that offers a
choice of converting even palettes to on, odd palet-
tes to off; even palettes to off, odd palettes to on
or custom palette conversion table. The first two
selections are pretty much self-explanatory. The 3rd
selection allows you to decide what palettes are
converted to off and on. Enter a 0 for off and a 1
for on. After you have made one of the above three
selections, you are then instructed to press the =>
____________________________________________________

[ENTER] key. At this point you can watch as in mere
seconds, the conversion is performed. When done vie-
wing the PMODE 4 image, press any key. You are then
asked if you want to save the picture. If you answer
yes, then you must enter a file-name, followed by a
Tape or Disk specification, and the PMODE 4 picture
will be saved. If you answer no, then you are retur-
ned to the conversion menu for another try at it.
When you are satisfied with the results, you can
save the picture. After the picture is saved, the
program restarts. Just answer no to the 'is your
picture in memory' prompt to exit the program (or
press [BREAK]). I hope this program is of use to the
CoCoFriends. It was a real challenge to write and I
learned a lot about the organization of the HSCREEN
in the process! I already have ideas about some =>
____________________________________________________

more HSCREEN utilities that I'd like to write. One
idea that I have is to create a PMODE 4 to HSCREEN 2
or 4 image, with a user selected Palette for the b &
w data. I don't know when I'll get around to it tho-
ugh. If any of you friends need such a routine, let
me know and I'll rush the process of creating it up
a bit. Any questions, comments, suggestions, praise

PS - Printer Styler - RUN"PS".
This small utility allows you to set up your printer
to the various print styles by toggling the proper
letter codes. After having done so, you may exit the
program and you are ready to use your printer with
the new setup. The program also features a Line Type
-writer option. As is, the utility was written for

     RD2 - RAM DISK2 - 512K only - RUN"RD2".
If you have a 512K CoCo3, this is a quick way to

a little cardboard box just a little over 5 x 1-1/2

Since cartridges for my DMP 107 were out of
stock in the nearest Radio Shack store, the salesman
suggested that, "If I didn't mind trying it, I could
refill my old cartridge with a ribbon refill kit. A
package of three ribbons for a little over the price
of one new ribbon cartridge." I didn't know this kit
even existed until then, but I had a couple of spent
cartridges at home (My wife calls me a packrat), so
it was an easy sale. =>
____________________________________________________

The "kit" consists of a box containing a pair of
disposable plastic gloves and three individual poly-
wrapped boxes of the size mentioned above, each box
containing one ribbon. Instructions are printed in
one paragraph on the back of the kit's box.
Following the instructions, I carefully pried
open the ribbon cartridge and immediately heard the
clatter of a small part falling into the clutter on
my workbench!....Then, after "noting carefully the
ribbon path"....I laid out a clean sheet of paper,
got out another old ribbon cartridge, and started
from the beginning! This time I knew what to watch
out for! Once it was opened, I set THIS cartridge
aside to use for a REFERENCE, retrieved the missing
part for the first cartridge from its hiding place,
and soon had the ribbon replaced. =>
____________________________________________________

I merely closed the second cartridge without
replacing the ribbon at that time. The new ribbons
will stay fresher longer in their sealed packages.
With a price of $14.95 for the kit you can save
almost half the price of a new cartridge with each
ribbon you replace. The replacement procedure is not
difficult, however it would have been much easier if
the instructions had been illustrated, or, at least,
more detailed. They do not even mention the twist in
the ribbon, or how that twist should be situated in
the cartridge. Having a second cartridge for a
visual aid proved to be a MUST for ME!
For me, this was a very worthwhile purchase. Its
use does require patience, good manual dexterity, and
critical observation. I was warned that there could
be a mess, I had no problems in that respect. =*

HFE
ELAD REMARK

MANY OF YOU HAVE RECEIVED "HPRINT FONT EDITOR" BY
J.R. STRONG FROM RICK. I HAD THE CHANCE TO SIT DOWN
AND LOOK THIS PROGRAM OVER THE OTHER DAY. SINCE ALL
HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS FINE PROGRAM I WILL TALK
ABOUT THE UTILITIES THAT CAME WITH IT.
THE PROGRAM "SAMPLER" PROVIDES A HARDCOPY OF ALL
18 FONTS ON THE HFE DISK. IF YOUR PRINTER DOESN'T
USE TANDY CODES THEN EDIT LINE 50 &60 BEFORE RUNNING
THE PROGRAM. THIS IS A HANDY PRINTOUT OF THE FONTS
PROVIDED. I PLAN TO USE IT TO PRINT OUT OTHER FONTS
AS WELL.
THE "CONVERT" UTILITIES PROVIDE ASSEMBLER SOURCE
CODE FOR EDTASM & OTHERS. "CONVERTB" PROVIDES DATA
STATEMENTS OF THE FONTS FOR USE IN BASIC PROGRAMS. I
NOTICED A MINOR BUG IN THESE UTILITIES. IN LINE 70
AN EXTENTION OF ".HFE" IS USED INSTEAD OF ".FNT". =>
____________________________________________________

THIS IS A SIMPLE OVERSIGHT. SINCE I HAVE TWO DRIVES
I ALSO CHANGED THE NEXT LINE TO "OPEN" A FILE TO
DRIVE 1 BY ADDING [:1] TO THE END. AS A SIDE NOTE I
LLISTED "CONVERT" AND WAS GREETED BY A HARDCOPY OF
THE PROGRAM IN THE "OUTLINE" FONT! EGAD,ELAD - READ
THE MANUAL! TURNING THE COCO OFF RESTORES THE COCO
FONT.
THE OTHER PROGRAM ,"BANNER",IS A CUTE PROGRAM THAT
USES *****'S TO PRINT OUT BANNERS. THE MANUAL WASN'T
NUMBERED SO I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY PAGES WERE MISSING
IN MY COPY (IF ANY). THE DESCRIPTION OF THE "STORE
CHARACTER" COMMAND WAS CUT SHORT.
THIS WAS A GREAT BONUS DISK FROM RICK.

                          EGAD! I'M GLAD!
                                            =>

RICK: Thanks for the helpful review Elad! Let me say
just a word about the documentation..After spending
some time typing up the docs, (and proofreading them
too!) I printed out a copy and it looked grand. But
I went back and changed just one or two little bitty
things and did not notice the new printout had
dropped a line or two from a couple of pages. I took
this copy to my local printer and sent some of these
out to the Friends before the error was finally
caught. There was no problem with pages missing,
just a couple of lines were dropped from a couple of
pages. If your doc had no mention (or description)
of BANNER on the last page, please let me know and
I'll send you a new copy.

All Drives are not created equal
Dann McConnell

I recently ran into a problem I wanted to share
with everyone ,and possibly get a answer to
what went wrong! In December I learned that any
5 1/4 360K drive can be used as Drive #2 in my
FD-502, so Mac went to work finding a good used
drive at a decent price. I finally found one for
$30 and then had to track down a power cable,
PROBLEM #1: All the cables I ordered were wrong!
When I finally got the idea from Bob Brutko to just
solder the wires together and circumvent the RS
connector in the FD-502, he found me a standard
Drive power cable end, (Thanks again Bob), I went
to work installing my Drive #2, when completed the
task, I went to work testing it!

                                =>2
____________________________________________________

The first test, I placed a good disk in Drive #0
and Drive #1 , and tried DIR, the Drive #0 executed
the DIR function, but the Drive #1 gave me a IO
error on 4 attempts! Then I inserted a blank disk
in Drive #1 and tried a DSKINI1, again a IO error
occured, after 3 or 4 tries, I was a little bit
baffled because I no longer got a IO error, this
time a neat little "Format Incorrect" came up on the
screen, I have never seen this on my COCO3, and also
I was in the 32 screen mode, and these characters
were in maybe a 40 screen size! I am presuming the
size, as they were smaller than the normal letter
size on the 32 screen. Shortly after this occurence
I smelled something getting HOT, so I powered off
and dis-assembled the used drive.
                                    =>3

The drive I bought had a power type transformer
on it and also a long circuit board on the top
layer, these are the only 2 differences I could
note! The person I bought it off of said that
it was a standard IBM 5 1/4 360K drive, and he
thought it had came out of a local Bank system
when they upgraded to 3 1/2 drives. Does anyone
know of such a problem? I'm getting my money back
for the drive, but I sure hate to pay RS $137 for
a Drive #2 Kit! FRUSTRATION! RS Style!!

CHETUTOR???
Victor Neufeldt

I know this is way back and perhaps some felt it
not for them, but I'm wondering if anyone in this
group copied and got working that program CHETUTOR
in Feb '91 Rainbow Pg 66. I once did well with chem-
istry (good grades) and this looked interesting, but
I didn't get it to work correctly -- even sent for
the disk. After a backup copy and loading it from
the disk, I still found the same problem. You are
given the choice of formatting your own test, how
many questions, test on chemical names, equations,
or how they combine, do you want print-out of errors
etc. I select number of questions and get one more
than I selected. The print-out lists errors but the
answer to the first isn't given. Instead it gives
the answer to the second as the answer to the first
etc, etc. I seemed to get the idea that =>
____________________________________________________

the problem was simple -- maybe it is, but I've not
yet found it. Plan to re-LLIST it and try again --
maybe if I study the Print-out or Error routines
long enough and am REAL lucky I might stumble upon
the right thing to try. Just thought I'd ask.

File Transfers
STEVE FELKER

I would like to receive information on where I
can get a program to transfer CoCo text files to an
IMB compatible and vice versa. I know I can do this
through a modem, but I would prefer a disk based
program. Eventually I will upgrade to an IBM, and I
want to go ahead a get such a program while I can.
I have hundreds of text files that will need to be
transfered.

12 pages long !! If anyone out there has this puppy
on disk I would appreciate a copy.

Also I am looking for a HP LASER printer compatible
screen dump for COCOMAX III and MAX 10.
Last but not least, I have all sorts of basic prgms
to run a laser printer with the COCO 3. and a driver
for Simply Better. You want a copy ?? or help with
setting up a laser printer with the COCO ??? =>

LETTERS/NAMES
JOHN C. PENDLETON

There are programs that convert phone numbers to
letters (names).

Wonder if anyone has written one for CFDM that
takes a name and converts these same letters to
other combinations of letters (names)?

Or both ways in one program?

Need a Patch Cable!
Dann McConnell

I'm in need of a little fix, I have a FD-502 and
just installed a Drive 1 in the case, the ribbon
cable was A-OK 2-2 etc, butttt the power splitter
cable I've found out is impossible to find! The
first cable I recieved from MICROCOM was a regular
plug (4 pin) to fit most drives and the other was
a mini plug like the one in my FD-502, I even
ordered one from RS (#278-765) but the same problem
occured, the mini end of the plug is a female type
same as what I have in the FD-502, I looked at it
to see if I could solder them together, butttt I'm
afraid I'll wire it wrong, as the color of the
wires are different! Does anyone know where I can
get a correct cable, Standard 4 pin on one end and
mini style (RS) onthe other end? <CTRL-2>"

PRINTING RICKETT'S REVISITED....
.....ROBERT ALLEN TURNER.....

In issue #14 of CFDM, Orval Carden asked about an
HSCREEN 4 Screen Dump for the Star NX1000 Rainbow
Printer. Once upon a time, there were a couple of
programs available from SuperSoft, Inc., that supp-
orted this printer. They were RAS*MAX and STAR*MAX.
I do not know where or if these programs may still
be obtained. SuperSoft's address was once upon a
long time ago: SuperSoft, Inc., 363 Oakwood Ave.,
Jackson, MI 49203. Phone: (517) 787-3610. Since
this is not a PO Box, chances are, the owner of
SuperSoft is still there. Wouldn't hurt to try!
If all else fails, I volunteer to write a screen
dump for you. If you can photo-stat the pages from
your manual relevant to sending graphics, etc., or
perhaps, loan me the manual, I'll get to work on
the program. I believe that I should be able to =>

write such a program. My address is:

TRANSLAT PATCH Doesn't Work!
Dave Otis

I used Colin North's TRANSLAT.PAT patch with my
CocoMax III TRANSLAT.BAS program as described in the
CFDM Issue #4, but it didn't work. Fortunately, I
had a second copy of TRANSLAT.BAS so I can continue
to use it in its unmodified form, without the patch.
However, Colin's idea was great and it would really
be useful to be able to convert PMODE4 pictures into
Cocomax III, as he intended. After merging the patch
I kept getting OD errors. On examining the merged
program and comparing it to the unmodified program,
it appeared that the added lines were replacing some
lines of DATA. Perhaps something was wrong with the
numbering. Has anybody succeeded in making it work
the way it was supposed to? -Dave Otis

Question about TW128

Does anyone out there know if TW-128 could be

Why Doesn't Somebody---
Dave Otis

OFFER A PICTURE SERVICE?

Why doesn't somebody who owns a video camera
or camcorder and a digitizer (RASCAN or DIGISECTOR,
etc.) offer a picture service? That is, if you sent
in your photographs or line drawings, he or she
would digitize them and save them to a disk for you.
You could then use your own graphics program (Coco-
max 3, etc.) and use the photos or drawings for a
letterhead or use them with Max-10 or other desktop
publisher program. I should think it might be
possible for somebody to offer to digitize a group
of five or six photos for something like $25 or so.
Maybe it has been tried and there wasn't enough of a
market or something. Anyway, I think such a service
would be feasible, useful and great fun to use. =*
